  • So how exactly do we access the HDD in our Super Slim PS3's? It's actually so easy that this video is rendered useless. But thanks for watching anyway!
    If you own a 12GB PS3 and would like to know where to get a Mounting Bracket/Caddy for an HDD you're putting in, you can buy one here:

    I just bought the super slim, and I was so afraid of breaking the case too. This is definitely helpful to those of us upgrading from an old model plagued by the YLOD. Thank you!

    Hi, I'm glad you like the video!
    1. By bracket, I'm assuming you're talking about the metal holster for the HDD. The Super Slim model does need a specific holster which you can find online to buy.
    2. When you upgrade the HDD of a PS3, you do want to back up your data. When a new HDD is put into a PS3, the PS3 will reformat the HDD. So you want to get your data off your old one. Then you can restore the data safely on the new one.

  • @ElectricalSynapse
    @ElectricalSynapse 12 лет назад +6

    Yes, you can. I just (literally 5 minutes ago) upgraded my 12gb PS3 with a 320gb hard drive I had lying around. Super easy, took me only a a few minutes. Make sure you get the mounting bracket as indicated in the video's description. I bought the exact same one and it works perfectly.

    I'm thinking of getting a super slim PS3 with the smallest memory, then buy a 1TB hard drive to stick in it and pay the same as what you would get for a 500GB PS3.

  • @MysticRyan
    @MysticRyan  12 лет назад +2

    Well, a PS3 using SSD actually doesn't add that much speed/performance. The SSD is definitely faster, but I mean, really you are not going to notice much of a difference when using the traditional HDD. Certain games that have to always read the Blu-ray will load environments quicker, but even then, other games don't have to read the Blu-ray all the time, thus no matter what you're using, it's the same. So I wouldn't worry too much about speed. Glad my video helped!

  • @MysticRyan
    @MysticRyan  12 лет назад +5

    You can absolutely do that, just make sure that you back up your data to an external hard drive BEFORE taking your HDD out. When you put the HDD in your new PS3, the new PS3 won't let you use it until you format the HDD. So that way when you format it, you can restore all your data from that external hard drive.

    Just like to point out, if you had trouble opening the slot as i did i used the non knife side of a butter knife against the end closest to the power button and pushed like that came of with a bit of force, nothing to excessive though.

    The side panel that you should remove is on the disc reading side. I wish he would have mentioned that as I almost broke my case trying to pry the case off on the wrong side. Though i am grateful nonetheless that he uploaded a video showing how to change the hdd.

    Yes they do. I've been using 7200 rpm HDD's in my PS3's for years. They even save a few seconds in certain games when loading.

  • @MysticRyan
    @MysticRyan  12 лет назад +1

    ALL PS3's use a 2.5 inch Hard Drive. That has NEVER changed, however, the caddy's, (The metal holder for the HDD) is different depending on the PS3's. If you search the comments below, I tell others that you can just put the HDD in the Super Slim without the holder, it just wouldn't be stuck in place. Which is easily fixable by using non-static carboard to fill in the open areas.

  • @blemishednicely8402
    @blemishednicely8402 11 лет назад

    1) 500GB is largest recommended, TB's seem unstable (some do/most don't)
    2) Yes, as long as you only store content that is not "locked" (DLC, etc.)
    3) Can't say for sure as haven't played/tried, but am assuming the 2 networks have no way to "link" to each other (haven't heard of a single instance yet, at least).
    Hope that's a good set of answers for you/sorry if not.

  • @MysticRyan
    @MysticRyan  12 лет назад

    Yes it does. As I say in the video, consider backing up your data because any HDD being put into a PS3 needs to be formatted.

  • @MysticRyan
    @MysticRyan  12 лет назад

    You can, the problem with that though is that whenever a PS3 gets a new HDD put in it, the PS3 cannot use the HDD until it is formatted. So if you want to use your old HDD, you definitely could, you just need to back up your data so you can restore it once it's back in the new PS3.

  • @MysticRyan
    @MysticRyan  12 лет назад +1

    I mention this right at the end of this video! Don't worry. You can still use your HDD. Just grab Sony's firmware from their website, and put it on a USB Drive or whatever you may have and follow the instructions your PS3 gives you. You can still use your HDD.

  • @MysticRyan
    @MysticRyan  12 лет назад

    You could just pop in an HDD. The only problem is you don't have that mount/holder for the HDD. I know that some people have just been putting the HDD in, and then filling in the extra space with non-static cardboard and it seems to do the trick. That way the HDD is secure and not flailing around in there.

  • @MysticRyan
    @MysticRyan  11 лет назад

    While doing it that way would be possible, I wouldn't recommend it. You'd have to change your old HDD to an external one, pull all your files off, and then copy them over manually, which sometimes won't work because certain PS3 files need to be transfered via Sony's built in methods. You'd save more time backing up. It's only a few hours. Plus it depends how much data you're really transferring.

  • @MysticRyan
    @MysticRyan  12 лет назад

    Pretty much. I'm sure there's some random ass HDD that is perhaps by a different brand that might not work. But if you're going with trustable brands, they'll basically all work.

  • @blemishednicely8402
    @blemishednicely8402 11 лет назад

    No, it should prompt you to format it once it's in/system's 1st turned on. If you format it beforehand, it may still give this prompt (as only the original HDD provided w system doesn't/ie, another PS3 drive already formatted can't just be "slipped in" & have onboard data/saves be used-it'll give you the prompt even if it's fresh out of a working system).

  • @MysticRyan
    @MysticRyan  12 лет назад

    The size is 2.5 inch just like all other PS3's. Have you tried looking on Ebay for the right holders? I wouldn't even bother looking for one, you really don't need it. As you can just put non-static cardboard in there to keep the HDD from flailing around.

  • @GreenGoody
    @GreenGoody 12 лет назад

    Thanks a bunch for the video! I was getting upset because the only videos I can find are ones that show you how to install the HDD, but not formatting the system once it is turned on. I am used to updating pcs/laptops and I know once you insert a new HDD there is a whole other process to go through haha. Infinite thank yous.

  • @blemishednicely8402
    @blemishednicely8402 11 лет назад

    Yes-this is actually the largest recommended drive to use. Anything larger than that starts to get very dicey/hit & miss.

  • @blemishednicely8402
    @blemishednicely8402 11 лет назад

    The 80GB "locked" data (DLC, etc.) is gone if the system's dead, but other data will still be there. If you want the 80GB data to your slim you can find USB-SATA "slave" rigs to put all the remaining data in the slim. If you are talking about getting a new one, then you can do the data transfer utility.

  • @MysticRyan
    @MysticRyan  12 лет назад

    Trust me it's left. Apply pressure with your thumbs and slide the panel left. It will snap out, and you can lift it up to.

  • @blemishednicely8402
    @blemishednicely8402 11 лет назад

    Pretty sure it's a 2.5. TB HD's are apparently hit & miss, with some saying it works/others saying it doesn't. The largest "safe" size SONY rep's will advise is 500GB. (Apparently it needs to use something called a "500 Kb-block system" {can't re exact wording} in the HD, which may be the cause of some of the TB failures). Hope that helps!
    (you can also try an external USB for save data, etc as long as is not "locked" content but again some ext drives have power/operating issues so not all work)

  • @Thegtalordful
    @Thegtalordful 11 лет назад

    actually, if you are positioning your PS3 vertically, There's no need of mounting bracket. You simply put something slim (kartong, wood etc.) between HDD and ps3 and it will run good. :)

  • @blemishednicely8402
    @blemishednicely8402 11 лет назад

    THAT is really very interesting...to be honest I didn't look extremely deep into 1TB workarounds (seems to get sketchy/complicated in that pond). Very useful info-I'll have to check that out (what type of HDD did you use? Replication goes best following exact success). I've heard SSD's help cut load time/FPS rate (esp'ly on Skyrim/other such "laggy" games). Thank you very much for sharing that (any noticeable performance/load time boost at all? Just curious...)

  • @blemishednicely8402
    @blemishednicely8402 11 лет назад

    You can find USB-SATA rigs to turn a drive into a "slave" drive (usually does SATA-IDE, as well). DL the FAT 32 prog/install, plug said rig into USB/hook up to removed SATA drive to the fitting & it should go. "Locked" content won't go, though.

  • @Paladin0228

    You do know that YLOD was happening to people who were using normal Sony-provided HDDs right? In a well ventillated, cool area the supposed overheating issue you are bringing up does not exist. My Ps3 is about 4 feet from the vent and my g/f always runs the AC so that area of the room hovers around 60 degrees Farenheit and plenty of airflow. At any rate I decided not to put the 7200 in because I did not feel like re-downloading a bunch of games I got digitally.

    Just about any USB storage device will work, but hard drives need to be formatted FAT32 instead of NTFS (which is the default format for most USB HDDs unless they are specifically made for Macs, which use HFS/HFS Plus). However, on Windows XP and higher, the built-in formatter only supports formatting FAT32 partitions up to 32GB. If you need a larger FAT32 partition, you need a third party formatting utility or, oddly enough, a Mac (the "MS-DOS' option in Disk Utiltiy on Mac is FAT32)..

  • @MysticRyan
    @MysticRyan  12 лет назад

    Yes, you can definitely use that HDD. However, whenever a new HDD is put into a PS3, the PS3 requires you to format the HDD in order for it to work. So I'm assuming you wanted to keep your data, since it wouldn't make sense for you to downgrade the HDD that already comes in the Super Slim. Sad to here about your Yellow lighted PS3 man. Best of luck to you.

    You are being told it's 500GB because the manufacturer counts 1kB as 1000B, while it's actually 1024B, so you lose 24B at every promised kB therefore making it as follows: 500 GB = ~466 GB.

    Tough call. The 12 gig doesn't come with a caddy for the HDD, so you gotta get your own metal bracket, and they're crap (it's a downgrade to cut production costs while they wait to churn out the PS4). Do you know the owner/system history or is it just from some guy/site/store? If not sure bout the shape maybe do the 12G-but GET the $60 2yr extended warranty with it A.S.A.P (or at least BEFORE your 1-year stock is up). Bought my 250G March 20 2013 & malfunctioning already, overheat/shutdown etc.

    With the 12g you need to buy Sony PlayStation 3 Replacement Hard Disk Drive (HDD) Mounting Bracket,which I just got form HMV for £8 then you need a 2.5 Hard drive.

    Sorry, but did you say the PS3 does the format for you?
    My last PS3 (old fat one) didn't, so I never got the chance to do this, but I have the super slim 12gb one & I want to put a 1tb one in now. Will I have to use my laptop or will the PS3 format it for me?

    Hey Ryan, thanks for the video .. one question though .. When I insert the HDD, the ps3 recognizes it and says do you want to use it as the primary drive and to transfer any data from my 12gb memory space .. all this is cool, however doesnt this mean that the system will run slower to load games ? i.e. we are now setting the primary drive to a mechanical HDD over the flash based 12gb stock RAM (SSD) ?

    The PS3 will format for you when you first boot up with the new HDD :)

    Load times & FPS are the same, obviously if a game is on the HDD, it loads faster, For example, I played GT5 off the disk, took ages to load anything, loaded it onto the HDD & it was a lot faster.

    I got a 1tb, it didn't work & I tried a number of things, like putting an update on a USB stick, that didn't work either. In the end, I had to put it in safe mode, it worked then & recognised the 1TB HDD. Benn working fine, put loads of stuff on without a problem.

    I just got a used PS3 Super Slim. While it only has 12GB of flash storage, I heard Super Slims always use SATA III (not SATA II). Without searching online, what's the largest hard drive size this console recognizes? I've heard 1.5TB, but has anyone successfully used a bigger one? I can't find a clear answer anywhere. I'm looking for someone who has tried a really big drive.

    Hi! been watching some of your videos and maybe you could give me your opinion. I have 2 possibilities for buying a ps3 for the first time. One is a ps3 slim 120gb, used, no warranty, with a video showing internet connection ( not banned), meeting the seller in person, for 100€ with 2 games. The other would be buying a new ultra slim 12gb model, 2 years warranty for 199€. I have already a 320gb HDD so I can change when receiving one or the other. What would you do? Thanks
