Truck steel beds are vented so they can drain water from them. My GMC has the vents along the front of the bed. The tail gate also doesn't seal out dust. The tail gate is where most of the dust comes from. While moving, the rear of your truck creates a vacuum that draws dirt onto the rear of your truck. I have a fiberglass shell on my truck. The company that sold me the shell offers a peel and stick rubber gasket for the tailgate. The front of my bed I just uses a peel and stick rubberized gasket they use to set window frames in RVs. You can buy it by the roll. You can have a friend use a flash light at night on the outside of your truck while your in the bed and spot all the unsealed areas that are letting in the dust. Thanks for a very informative video. Good luck :)
Watching this for the 4th time, now taking notes. This is likely my final choice based on this video's review, measurements, no stress price point, and utility. Salamat po!
I have a 1/2 ton RAM with a 8 foot bed. I bought my Project M because it was light enough for a 1/2. I think Mule, who was my dealer, hadn't installed a Full Size on a 1/2 ton very often. They had done Medium size on a Tacoma. Believe me the Full Size on the 8 foot bed is the cat's meow.
I have a bed rug in my Tundra with an ARE cap. I’ve had it since I bought the truck. I love it. I haul bags of chip, chain saws, gas cans, dogs, tools everything then just take it to the car wash to vacuum. If it gets really dirty I just pressure wash it out at the car wash with a wand and some soap, rinse then just park it on a hill in my yard, block it and let it drain. You would LOVE a bed rug in there. It will give your camper a whole new look and feel. Awesome upgrade.
I have a bed rug with a ARE on my tacoma and i like the use those small dividers with velcro on the bottom. Sticks good and holds my laundry basket in place for grocery bags
That's what I like about this setup. You can use your truck as a truck most days of the year and go camping when you want. And I was thinking something like a foam rubber strip running around the top of the bed before the install would have made a good air seal. It may have prevented some of that dust.
We have a bed cover on an F150. It seals with rubber. The seal does a great job however the tailgate has air gaps all the way around and lets lots if dust in as well as the ability for bugs to come and go. I assume his issues with dust are similar to ours. Terry
70 bucks you can get the for dampener easy install just remove your rear brake light assembly bolt in the short gas strut. Then your tailgate won't open smoothly
I’m definitely going to get one. But house maintenance first. And recuperating from spinal problems. Late 2023, I’m ordering. Maybe early 2024. (At least before I’m 80 years old!)
I am close to your age. My thought was how hard is it to get into the camper over a tail gate then how do you get into the bed? In my younger days I had a six pack overhead camper and it was a bit dangerous on my rickity ladder to get up in that bed and a pain if you had to get up in the middle of the night. And if you are going to get one, order it now because it takes forever to get one. I am getting a high shell and making my bed on the floor to access easily.. I dont need to stand up.
About the tailgate drop…the Lariats and above come with a “special” hinge and gas shock that’s installed behind the passenger taillight. If you drive a XL or XLT, based on the vin, dealer will claim unavailable, I gave them a lariat vin from their own lot and ta-da, available. Took all of 10 min to install all under 70$ ( hinge and strut) . Do it- you’ll love it.
Nice camper shell...you could have a slide out drawer kitchen system...on one side shelves above.l....fridge slide on other.....in bed transfer tank/ toolbox across front , with 20ovah battery for your 400 watts of solar with all your controllers inside , control panel mounted ....cassette toilet , shower off rear hatch...add a 270 awning....I want it...what's the weight rating for roof,...can it carry my fishing kayak....good review...!
You are absolutely right. Almost everything is an option that adds up to the base price considerably. Also, you have to wait a lot of time if you order one.
Great review & walkthrough. Very thorough. I think this is what I am looking for. I see they make them in an 8' bed size, yeah! I am selling my pull behind camper & a slide in camper, too much fuss factor with water lines & such. I find myself using water out of a can & sleeping bag, so why have all this extra stuff? I want to set up my camper for my needs & make it more modular. Take the things I need for a given trip & leave home things not needed. My friends think I'm nuts, but minimal is the way to go.
After seven years with a campervan, I totally agree with you. I built it myself and changed the interior design EVERY year trying to make it perfect for lots of different uses. Now I have made it " modular" I can empty the entire floor area in less than 10 minutes. Or just have a few things, depending on needs. It's the future. You are on the right track, not nuts at all. ( as a bonus, if the van breaks or gets trashed, I can transfer my modules to another van in no time at all.)
Hello great vid. Do you have plans or measurements on how to make the end brace locking mechanism? The bit that lifts but locks in place. Just trying to figure out how to make mine. Cheers.
Really liked how you took out the tape measure. I'm 6'3" and I see all kinds of reviews where people say they have plenty of room and I'm left not knowing if I would have enough room.
Gas struts my friend. Hydraulic struts usually have a separate hydraulically fed system which needs to be serviced from time to time and is generally used for heavier applications because they are air over hydraulic.
Great review. I am building my own camper along the same lines (Extended top only) and this has given me ideas on what to do, and what NOT to do. I appreciate what you've shown us.
I would be interested in watching your construction as it develops, but I can certainly understand why you wouldn't much want to bother with the filming process either.
Damn I like the idea of these! This is made for camping and working with a truck. Mountains, desert, everything in between! Gotta get one for a F150 Lightning! I've been happy with my ARE topper, but this would be so much nicer. And with a Lightning and Jackery or 2, would not need the AGM battery sticking up and costing a lot. Also great to hear no leaks in Tetons storm.
I have two question dose it come with Jackets, so when you want to remove the camper Project M can you jacket it up to remove . So you can store it on your property ? and how hard is it to put back on your truck when you want it back on ? by the way you did a great job tell us how to use the camper .
Best review ever!!! The details along with the measurements were very much appreciated!! You actually did a review of the topper instead of just talking about how you would use it. Thank you.
Wow. Me being disabled be more tuff climbing in but thats nice I just got me toy hauler cause I could afford it. But need ramp to load stuff my grill its not small lol. But wheel chair and electric scooter. But I wish ide seen something like this few years back. I could have used for fishing nights or weekends. Scared to no how much it cost. Lol. But wow. I live in Canada, and I contemplated buying one of these along with a scout Olympic, I'm wondering what's the condensation like when it gets quite cold? Will you also be able to stay warm at night when it gets below freezing if you have an external heating system. Like a Mr Buddy heater or an Olympian Wave 3?
How much is the power system? Also, can you use your own mattress?…if so, what size…queen or full size? Did you do any dust intrusion modifications?…I’ve heard dust is bad in the Project M. Sealant or rubber? Can you sit on the shelf or does it require reinforcement? Is the track mount outside standard…like where you showed your shovel and Jerry cans? Is there the same track mounting on the inside, also? Do you know of a good heating system….electric or propane? Sorry for all the questions! Excited about getting a Project M!

I'm just not one for truck campers except the Scout Kenai. Which I saw your video for and thank you for that! I just took a gamble watching this but this Project M looks very promising. There are so many ways to work with all that space. Glad you you made it through those storms! Your alterations are DEFINITELY something they should consider! Thank you KIMO365!!

Price is stupid IMHO. I guess I am too old to overpay for things like this. Thats a $3500-$5000 topper max imho. Its slighty better than a tent or rooftop tent.

8:49 😂 my man has moves. Thanks for the great review. Definitely made me want to run out and grab one. Did almost everything you showed come with it? For example, the four L.E.D strips on the inside roof. And maybe I missed it, but I don't think you mentioned the price. Once again, thanks for the info...

Thanks
That Sunseeker is a Class C. Class B’s are more like the Sprinter vans and are usually smaller. I had a Class C that was 28 feet long on a 70/80’s Van chassis.
nice review and not a bad all in one toper/camper but for my ideas and plans i'd need to make to many modifications to suit me and my truck for it's price point. but going to save to video for future reference and consideration if things change for me.
Good video. Direct and to the point.. Its just a idea, but what if they made the bed slide to the rear with a option of two separate sleeping areas and standing room in the middle?
I want a topper like this for the 2022 Ford maverick! With I hybrid truck it come with a large quite generator, a slide rear window could provide heat or air conditioning to the topper.
I emailed them asking about the possibilities of attaching the Project M to the Maverick (as I was considering the hybrid Maverick as well), and they responded on June 3rd "Early indications are the bed rails may not be robust enough for us to attach", but said that they were still open to looking into it and to check back in October 2022.
Excellent video. Everything is detailed to the ”T”. I’m going to order one of these, then have it set up with all the toys!!!!!🤙🏼 Thanx for the info!!!!

a snug top fiberglass camper shell over 3k . I wouldn’t pay that either especially when ther isn’t any space or features.

How do you secure yourself at night?
I’ve got a 06 Chevy avalanche with a 5.5’ bed … any option?
Great job showing it. What is your height to top of bed rails. Or alternatively how much does camper adds to height of the truck.
When talking about storage and a sub floor, a decked system would work great for you.
You’re better off building your own or finding someone who can build a drawer system
That’s what I want for guns.

That Sunseeker is a Class C. Class B’s are more like the Sprinter vans and are usually smaller. I had a Class C that was 28 feet long on a 70/80’s Van chassis.

April will be a new adventure!
nice review and not a bad all in one toper/camper but for my ideas and plans i'd need to make to many modifications to suit me and my truck for it's price point. but going to save to video for future reference and consideration if things change for me.
I wish i could see how these fit on a srw service body. Cant imagine a better camping rig.
Thanks for your information. 💪👍🙂
Good video. Direct and to the point.. Its just a idea, but what if they made the bed slide to the rear with a option of two separate sleeping areas and standing room in the middle?

Do you get any dust going into the inside? Thanks
