Hermes Pan walked away in mid shoot when Coppola botched the filming of his choreography by ignoring the Astaire-Pan golden rule of framing the dancers' full figures and keeping camera trickery unobtrusive. Young Master Francis admitted later that he should have listened to the old masters.
Nevertheless until later in this sequence the camera behaves itself, and we have an ingenious potted history of dancing's evolution in movies. The opening reminds us, in Fred's pastiche of Irish jig, that modern American tap had a white ancestry as well as a black one. Then Fred and Pet do an affectionate partnered piece (cf Adele and Fred on Broadway) before performing in front of a chorus in a jazzy way, evoking the Hollywood musical of the 1930s and 1940s.
Given this evolution, it is appropriate that after years of screen segregation black and white (and not only pre-pubertal kids) are seen mingling freely. Pet Clark had caused a stir on TV by- in the eyes of some Deep South station owners- acting too pally with Harry Belafonte in her variety show. Fred had always helped black hoofers get ahead and learned from them. 'Finian's Rainbow' was on the cusp of racial integration in 'family-friendly' mainstream entertainment.

One of my favorite movies as a kid, even if it stereotyped us Irish...::G:: But nobody I know remembers it. Everyone thinks Darby 'O Gill...LOL Just loved this music. Loved "Og", the leprechaun. :) And love Petula Clark's music to this day.

Fred Still had it. I think he was like 66 when they filmed that! And correct me if I am wrong didn't Francis Ford Coppola direct this movie? Fred was a class act in every way.
I owned a hand written letter that Fred wrote to an old Broadway producer friend of his, ever so graciously turning down an offer to use Fred's name to sell some kind of record in the 60's, he really was a nice guy. I have scans if anyone would like to read it. Thanks for posting the clip.

Well, I sadly disagree with most of the raves here. I do love this musical. I love Fred Astaire. But Pet, as good as her voice was, was a HORRIBLE actress as were most of this cast. I've seen it on stage and enjoyed it, the music is wonderful, but this movie is so sadly unwatchable.
