- lyrics here....
When I take you out, tonight, with me,
Honey, here's the way it's goin' to be:
You will set behind a team of snow white horses,
In the slickest gig you ever see!
Chicks and ducks and geese better scurry
When I take you out in the surrey,
When I take you out in the surrey with the fringe on top!
Watch that fringe and see how it flutters
When I drive them high steppin' strutters.
Nosey pokes'll peek thru' their shutters and their eyes will pop!
The wheels are yeller, the upholstery's brown,
The dashboard's genuine leather,
With isinglass curtains y' can roll right down,
In case there's a change in the weather.
Two bright sidelight's winkin' and blinkin',
Ain't no finer rig I'm a-thinkin'
You c'n keep your rig if you're thinkin' 'at I'd keer to swap
Fer that shiny, little surrey with the fringe on the top!
Aunt Eller: Would y' say the fringe was made a' silk?
Curly: Wouldn't have n' other kind but silk.
Laurey: Has it really got a team of snow white horses?
Curly: One's like snow, the others more like milk.
All the world'll fly in a flurry, When I take you out in the surrey,
When I take you out in the surrey with the fringe on top!
When we hit that road, hell fer leather,
Cats and dogs'll dance in the heather,
Birds and frogs'll sing all together and the toads will hop!
The wind'll whistle as we rattle along,
The cows'll moo in the clover,
The river will ripple out a whispered song,
And whisper it over and over:
Don't you wisht y'd go on forever?
Don't you wisht y'd go on forever?
Don't you wisht y'd go on forever and ud never stop
In that shiny, little surrey with the fringe on the top!
I can see the stars gettin' blurry,
When we ride back home in the surrey,
Ridin' slowly home in the surrey with the fringe on top!
I can feel the day gettin' older,
Feel a sleepy head near my shoulder,
Noddin', droopin' close to my shoulder, till it falls kerplop!
The sun is swimmin' on the rim of a hill;
The moon is takin' a header,
And jist as I'm thinkin' all the earth is still,
A lark'll wake up in the medder.
Hush, you bird, my baby's a-sleepin'!
Maybe got a dream worth a-keepin'
Whoa! you team, and jist keep a-creepin' at a slow clip clop.
Don't you hurry with the surrey with the fringe on the top!
Shirley Jones & Gordon MacRae
Oklahoma (1995)
Richard Rodgers Composer
Oscar Hammerstein II Lyricist - Видеоклипы
My Dad would wake us kids up to Oh What A Beautiful Morning. He passed in 1984. It is now 2024. 40 years ago. I still tear up when I think of it.
Rogers & Hammerstein were complete musical geniuses. Their musicals appeal to the heart and so continue to have timeless appeal.
Gordon and Shirley are absolutely perfect. Listen to his phrasing. His soft singing. I am happy to be alive to hear him.
They were the perfect duo for R&H musicals. No one today can top them.
I LOVE the way he sings this to her and I LOVE her reaction; it is wonderful. I fell madly in love with him at the age of 10 when I saw this movie. It was an era and the one movie that was made for him.
I was about that age in Australia . Still know nearly all the words to all the songs. Dreamed of singing like Gordon McRae, and fell in love with guess who.
His voice is so powerful and he can just fall into such a sweet, gentle part that just makes me melt.
An incredible voice - MacRae’s voice is one of the best I have ever heard
If you like this one. Check out Gordon McRae singing of “it’s magic“.
What am absolutely golden voice he has. And so handsome! Shirley is just as talented & as good-looking! Wonderful team.
So true!
Shirley Jones very, very under-rated.
Exquisite beauty, with a fantastic voice. I think she was all of eighteen when she did this. Stunning.
Out of all his songs, this is the one that always brought tears to Mr. Hammerstein's eyes.
Oh thank you for this! I have always had the same reaction, for decades. How validating to hear Mr Hammerstein particularly loved it. He wrote so many marvelous, enchanting and moving songs. This one is the one that always kills me. And I haven't heard anyone do it better than Mr MacRae.

@@annettespencer8154 You too?
Such a great song. I think this is R & H's best musical, even though the Sound of Music is good too. This one is pure gold.
I just love these 2 stars singing together! She is beautiful, and he was so handsome. So sorry that he passed away as young as he did! Love, Liz
OKLAHOMA! Gordon McRae and Shirley Jones! Gordon has a fabulous voice and Shirley also has a fabulous voice and is totally beautiful! This video is a piece of American history! I think it is a masterpiece. A great performance!!
I just love this song
Show me one person who can resist that voice, and I'll show you a tin ear at best, at worst, a stone heart.
God, I am SO glad I'm not the only one who noticed!
Rebecca Bass
Oh honey you are not the only one. If someone who looked like him with that voice hit on me, he could pick me up in a power wheels car and still get laid.
+Jason Durham i love the truthhes very good
Laurie resisted it! She's so silly at the beginning.
I was raised on this movie. I still get goosebumps listening to these songs
My honestly favorite musical duet ever. I grew up on this movie. I can honestly say this is my favorite rodgers and Hammerstein film. Gordon and Shirley have such lovely voices.
Same.
Hugh Jackman's version was nice, but Gordon Macrae IS Curly. I have never heard a better version than this.
so true
Only one Curly. Thank you 😊
My dad loved this song, and it's even better when you can see how he melts her with it. The ending of the scene is just hysterical!
I love these old movies.
They don't make movies like this anymore because there aren't any actors that can pull it off. These people could sing, dance, act and look great doing it.
So you think that in the past 55 years humans have changed so drastically that we could no longer pull this off?
@@FTLNewsFeed No, I saw the stage version with Hugh Jackman, and it was excellent. But those kind of talents are usually on the stage, not making films.
Seth McFarland probably could pull it off.. it might not be as classy, but sure would be entertaining.. lol
@martel - You got that right!!!!
This is my favourite musical of all-time. My mom took the me to see this film when I was 7, and I loved it so much, that we stayed in the cinema to watch it again!
God.. what a beautiful singer. I know now why my mum had tons of his stuff :)
Oh I miss that great decades of musical I grew up with.
I watched this movie sooo many times! My grandfather gave me the cd when i was younger and i always replayed this song over and over again :)
Still my favorite standard from the American songbook..
MY Grandmother and Great Aunt took myself and my cousin JAnet to see this move.....60 years ago....Ive loved musicals since then and I'm not Gay.....Talent!!!!!!
wow what chemistry between then!
Remember how the movie ended with Curly and his bride driving off in a Model T with a fringe on the top? I liked that!
John Shaw into the sky!
@Philkid3 YES! I was in Oklahoma in my community theater and the summer after the show my family went to Disneyland and it was the first time I had noticed they played a bunch of songs from Oklahoma on Main Street. I'm glad somebody else is observant too :)
This song is so damn catchy and the acting is so dang entertaining.. I've gotta watch this movie now
One of my dad’s favourite songs miss you and will always love you ❤
I think Oklahoma had more single hits than most any other Broadway play, saw this so many times when it came out, the Broadway show came out about 1945,same time State Fair, Finnians Rainbow, and, Brigadoon, + others, much as I love themall, OKLAHOMA is amazing .
If everything was done like this song was there wouldn't be any problems! Magnificent.
amen brother too much hate in this old world
My very thought. What have we become?
Thanks for the thought.
Amen!
Actually he did. He tells Aunt Eller he has hired the rig- he said he'd made it up because Laurey was being so mean to him.
Great clip. I haven't seen this in a long time. Gordon MacRae is so great and I fell in love with Shirley Jones many years ago. Thanks.
This is such a beautiful musical, always super to hear and see these two talented stars.
This is so clear, sharp, and colorful. Many of the videos I watch are grainy, blurred, dark, or all three. Excellent! Thanks, BravoDivine!
Thank you Stephen Colbert and Jon Batiste... my ears have been opened!
I love this scene! It amazes me how wonderful the backdrop looks. Could the camera crew ask for a more beautiful day? They were lucky! Wonderful song coupled with blue skies and sunshine ... makes this one of the best scenes in cinematic history!
Gordon McRae is probably the best male singer i have heard
Try Robert Goulet =)
I love his voice so much
Howard Keel?
I like how they rhymed "silk" with "silk."
lol
Paul Ski they rhymed "silk" with "siiiiiillllk" so I think it's okay 😂😂
They say the other is more like Milk
Ingenious! Slik!
yeah, they definitely rhymed "silk" with "milk"
The river will ripple out a whispered song
And whisper it over and over
Pure genius imagery
The sun is swimmin' on the rim of the hill
The moon is takin' a header
Wow!
Absolutely wonderful. This song, one of my favourites from a long list of musical genius melodies from Richard Rogers, twined with Oscar Hammersteins beautiful and often very witty lyrics, with two perfect singers. Shirley Jones sings also the haunting 'Out of my dreams' song from this show, surely a melody up there with 'Some enchanted Evening' from south Pacific. How have we got to here now in 2023 with so much bile everywhere, and talentless individuals hailed as stars?
If you add the very clever lyrics from Oscar Hammerstein to the clip clop rhythm of Richard Roger's music you have something of a little masterpiece. Perfectly performed by Gordon.
His voice ❤️😍
I am happy to report that India's forthcoming version of Oklahoma will feature "The Sari With the Fringe on Top."
love shirley jones im gonna go to another playlist your very welcome
Ricko s That's funny, and my mom is Indian so I'm a little Indian and Sari is like this thing Indian girls wear I believe
Dinolicious Heart I think that's the point!
Samir, you are wrecking thee sari!
My, Shirley sure does look radiant. I'd marry her too, after this number! lol.
She has the face and voice of an angel, there's no doubt about that. I'd say watching her, and listening to her sing was the only thing in this movie I enjoyed, except I couldn't stand her character.
That's real Female power and Ya gotta love it!
Dave Bass .. Shirley? I thought her name was Laurie
Dave Bass oh I'm sorry, I thought you were referring to the characters. Ignore what I said - Shirley and Gordon did amazing in this movie!
The man had a great voice!!!
Gordon MacRae
Born: March 12, 1921, East Orange, New Jersey, United States
Died: January 24, 1986,
What a great song. Tru craftsmanship. Add in a wonderful performance and you got perfection!
Definitely one of my favorites!
1:48 .... that laugh though
Geatle Ikr haha
Thank you so much for uploading it here and for giving the lyrics as well!!
His voice can take me any time he wants
Genuinely good people , with all their “fallies” only could be written by genuinely good authors. Wander if they ever look down on us from far above and what are they thinking.
remember watchin this with my grand ma when i was a kid and just couldnt get it.now that im grown i can really apprieciate it, this is classic (great)
I LOVEDTHIS MOVIE SO MUCH WHEN I WAS YOUNGER! Oh my gosh memories...
Always wondered what an isinglass curtain was... I was only 4 when the movie came out... probably saw it on a black and white tv a couple years later. I've loved it ever since.
A great song! Funny and enchanting!
Steven Torrey
Today's dialogue:
"Why don't you just grab her and kiss her when she acts that, Curley!"
"Because I don't want to be arrested for assault and thrown in jail, Etta!"
Reminds me of my youthful dating experience:
"She likes you...quite a lot."
"If she liked me any more she would sick the dogs on me!"
Love it. Great movie clip. Thanks for posting this.
who the hell is Etta? her name is Aunt Eller!
Gordon, great voice, easy on the eyes.
This makes me feel good..
Gordon's voice = VOICEGASM!
Local High School put this on and I took my kids to see it. Was good!
"Watch that fringe and see how it flutters, when I drive them high steppin' strutters." Heh heh. Ain't no finer rig is right, Oscar.
Love this movie, it's a favourite in my family. Always found it wonderful in all musicals how they would just burst out into song and dance. BANG. Everyone knows the words and are right in step. XD
But yes, this song, like all of them in this superb musical, are quite nifty.
Shirley... soooo beautiful!
Great Broadway Musicals stand up forever...like ‘Oklahoma’ has.
i like this movie soooo much !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Best voice evvvvvahhhhh.......!
i used to love this when i was a child and my gran had the oklahoma LP lol
Can’t help but whistle this as I walk down Main Street!
This is a sweet song.
definatly one of my favorite songs from a musical ♥
Incredible retrospective of an era of legendary stars, equally superb movie-making that is
anachronistic types of which never to be seen again in newly released form that is gone with the wind.
This is mine and my daddy’s song. It makes me tear up every time.
I mich prefer Gordan MacRae and Shirley Jones together in this, then in Carousel.
fantastic(L)
Sheer musical magic!
Golden years of televisions
saw this with my cousin Janet and my Grandmother and hers..1954 we were 7 years old but I remember..I love those musicals..
This brings tears to my eyes every time I watch it. Pretty heavy stuff once you really get it.
man i took a long while finding this song...it jus gots sumtin spunky bout it ....thanks...cheers...rjmendera...
I love the lighting on Judd as he enters. The dark cloud rolls in.
Love that last line.. "If she liked me any more she'd sic the dogs onto me."
Great song! Gets stuck in my head but I don't mind!
Thanks for posting!!! I love this song!!!
I love this song
Absolute LOVERS!!!! 🙌🏼
G major -to- E major -to- C# major -to- Bb major, back to G major. Richard Rodgers, you were incredible. Cascading major chords a minor-3rd down each time. Absolute genius!
Nobody can write songs like this anymore, no matter what assoles think. It's bloody clever and talented!!!!!🙄
When I first heard this song, I thought he was saying "when I take you out in Missouri" - I thought, wait, isn't this play set in Oklahoma?? lol
He was plenty of handsome
That beautiful lyric baritone of Gordon Macrae: ❤️
Gordon MacRae has one of the most beautiful voices of all time!
I play clips like this and wonder just whatever happened to romance, here we have two beautiful people (Without the aid of botox and fillers), teasing each other about going to a dance, and who was going with who? Maybe it is because I am an 85 year old man that I feel this way, but even at my advanced age I can still recall the excitement and thrill of taking a beautiful young lady to a dance, and I thank God that I have memories like this to look back on.
Ultimate casting. They were perfect together.
Amazing thing - HER first movie, no big experience at all but they took a chance and found a huge star!!!
He is so great singer ... and cute
I love this song:]]
so cute!
Great song
Where the two of them go into a whisper is pure genius .
Rod Steiger is brilliant as the villain! Perfect musical.
