I do currency arbitrage/digital nomad in reverse. I rent a cheap apartment over a store year-round in Chicago and travel abroad for months. The neighborhood is not great (2 shooting deaths this month) but it’s fully equipped and close to public transit. I have a place to keep my stuff while I run my online business and never need to deal with residency visas, taxes, etc…but I've never been a typical American. I'm 63 and don't need the big house or luxury car anymore, and I've been to 40 countries since 1990.

You are right about the lifestyle i think. as an american even though I live in an extremely walkable neighborhood i often am driving or ordering delivery instead of walking to get things myself.
JFD THANK YOU for another winner.. Just an enjoyable time getting to know you, such as it is. I know you already know we go there about every 6 months to volunteer and see my wife's family. Liek you my dream is to live in Ukraine, maybe an apartment to ABnB out in Kyiv, but live in maybe Zhashkiv or outside Odessa, maybe winter in Armenia and the rest of the year in Ukraine. Obviously the retirement dollars go A LOT further - but its just the quality of life to experience there. Good food, great culture, awesome people, and gorgeous country. Whats not to love?? I'm still a couple years out, but hunting pretty deep on real estate. Watching you as an ExPat, and of course speaking with my wife's family helps a lot. But honestly, your perspective as an ExPat is HUGELY helpful. You speak my language -if that makes sense. Thank you again for your investment of time and energy.
Hey Johnny, it’s me again, the algorithm queen! I liked, commented and watched til the end. Very informative and interesting Q & A. Stay safe out there! ❤️
I love your coverage. I started following you when the war started. I wanted to find someone that was boots on the ground, so to speak. I live in Tennessee. My grandma was born and raised in Ukraine. ❤ I know you didn't mean it the way it sounded, but when asked why all your female friends are so gorgeous your answer automatically went to their bodies and being fit and thin. Women who have some meat can still be gorgeous... Just like men. Lol Just be careful not to send the wrong message. 😊
Super kind of you to help that guy out with his business. I hope you were able to negotiate significant stake in the company or a high share of profit!
I hope your dreams of a wife and a family come true for you, Johnny. You have done so much for others and you are kind and gentle. I would love to see your happiness there in Ukraine grow that way.
Guessing the taste of others is difficult, as RUclips reveals. I think all your travels and activities are interesting. The Singapore Airport was fascinating, a complete surprise for me, for example. As you learn, so do I. I enjoy and profit from you revealing your thought processes.
@JohnnyFD Puerto Escondido I think is what you mentioned wanting to check out! Moving there was my late husband and my retirement plan! I'm only 41, so I still may end up there for retirement.

Johnny, I started watching your channel because you're in Ukraine, and I feel many others started viewing channel because you're in Ukraine. Making up for any losses in subscribers because you moved to Ukraine.
Sensible move to block the negativity criticisers, I reckon! Why do they think they can tell others what they should or shouldn't be doing! They never walked in another person's shoes... I like the way you chat and ask what people think sometimes, because that's wat anyone does when weighing stuff up in their minds. It used to be called conversation, not taking dictation on what your life-path *has* to be:) Your plan sounds fair enough to me. We all have hopes and dreams in our own lives. That's the rich tapestry of life (well, in most countries except ussr and nk, etc., !!! Aww, a doggy and children sounds like a lovely plan, Johnny. I wish you so much joy if you get to where you're heading in that. Time to relax and do whatever makes you happy. That's what good friends and worthwhile people should be wanting for you. The rest who try to dissuade you will not be having your best interests at heart, I reckon. Your family are lovely, by the way. Also, I love that you're now saying Kyiv in more of a Ukrainian sounding way, not ki-ev. And thank you too. I know how much focus it takes when replacing russian words because I had to learn a few basics in russian in the days when my letters wouldn't get through to my family in Ukraine unless I wrote in russian... Ukrainian written ones would *never* arrive there... It took so many years for that to change, and thank God it did, and thankfully the internet meant we could converse in writing in Ukrainian. IT's my late Father's native tongue, Ukrainian. And even he was forced to speak russian in his youth:( RUclips may have linked algorithms to the word Ukraine in your pre-travel videos and stopped when you went travelling, do you think? I checked a few times after I noticed no notifications coming up for me, but I have always focused my viewing on Ukraine in RUclips, and music/nature/environment vids. I did see the you visiting your beautiful parents one, and revisiting your old stomping grounds, also a one where you visited that wonderfully ornate building (my memory fails me where you were then), but for me, as I have family and friends in Ukraine, my free time was me keeping more of a closer eye on Ukraine, obviously. Especially with the shortages of supplies coinciding with your travels, so don't take that personally)) Thank you, Johnny, it could be useful to some people to get to know more about living in Ukraine; either renting or buying a property. I agree with you, more countries ought to make it easier for those who are contented with just having an affordable roof over their heads. Here in the UK, they used to have local authority housing (council houses), until the system changed and the government let those who'd been long-term residents have the 'Right to Buy' their council houses at a reduced price. The original idea was good, as local councils were intending to reinvest the profits into building new housing - but that never happened the way it was first intended. So now, apparently they have what they call 'social housing' or something(?) Housing associations and suchlike. But the main principles of those original council houses, was that when peoples' families grew up, left home, the council house tenants could just downsize by applying for a council-owned bungalow or apartment, ergo leaving their house for another new family to live in. Or they could do house exchanges if one grownup child left home & fewer bedrooms were needed by the remaining family. Such a shame as the UK now has a massive shortage of housing and a housing crisis. Many private rentals hike the rents up sky high, and local authorities (councils) pay out huge amounts in rent rebates, reducing the rent to an affordable level for tenants. Which I'm convinced just encourages buy-to-let property owners to raise rents up 'cos they know the local authorities will foot a large part of the bill. I'm currently a home owner, selling up, but I hate the idea that someone could buy it just to take advantage of desperate young families; starting out in life. It'd be interesting to hear more about how the system works in Ukraine for home buyers from abroad. I've seen a few videos from other countries, from people who've sold up and emigrated, bought abroad, but not in depth about the legal obligations, and the pros/cons of doing so, for places like Ukraine, Poland, and other similar nations.
@Serge-ft5et Thank you for that info, Serge. I have family in Ukraine, and before the pandemic it was planned for us to meet for the first time ever; in Ukraine. Then war happened and they have said not to come yet. But I had wanted to see where my late Father grew up and lived, and who knows, maybe even look around while there, to see if I might be able to buy a house in lesser urban Ukraine. I expect many Ukrainian people will feel more able to return home once their territory has been cleared of invaders. I pray for this every day. Yes, I hear so many people online saying they want to come and help Ukraine to get back on her feet properly, and some wish to live in Ukraine. I look forward to the day when I can come and meet Ukraine!
@Serge-ft5et Щиро дякую. Я прийму до уваги все, що ви скажете. Yes, it is a matter of honour. I like the way you say, everyone should feel their roots... I agree! My late Father was a Veteran of WW2, and I have so much more to learn about my native land, all of it! Мій тато провів багато років у лікарні (психічне здоров’я/PTSD was not known about in those early years), тому він не зміг навчити мене всьому, що я хотів знати. Because of soviets he could never come home ( Оригінальних паперів більше не існувало) so we could not bring him home... War steals so much. It will be my dream come true to learn to converse in Ukrainian actually *in* Ukraine, with family around me. There is so much cultural history I wish to see with my own eyes. But yes, a good base to do everything from is important. Currently, I live in a rural area here in the UK. We shall see what the future has in store for me, eh! :)
I've spent a few months there, it's okay, but it was never for me. I wrote about it here: www.johnnyfd.com/2016/07/johnnys-guide-to-poland-warsaw-vs.html
Go to Toluca, Mexico it’s nice and cool temperature wise in the summer and while there go to a small town near by called Almoloya de Juarez where there’s something strange happening there in simplest terms , there’s a line on top of a smalll stream of water it’s like a thick spider web fell on top of the water, you can shake the water and it will form back the stream ends close to the cathedral church is we’re the line in the water is.
Thanks, it's actually on purpose. The RUclips audience values just quick thoughts and funny adventures more than a serious business orientated mind. I've left all that behind when I sold my company and "retired."
Many thanks for your job, Johnny. I came across you by pure accident through one of Bald's videos, the one about KhTZ, and have been your fan ever since. If only you knew how much it meant to me when, after the war broke out and you and Bald left (understandably), you came back and made that hugely emotional video. I mean, man, the things you're doing here, in Ukraine, by merely filming the life and talking to people, are a lot more than many of us, locals, do. My respect to you, sir. I personally appreciate it very much. P.S.: I'd never know what an urban heat island is if not for you :)
I care about you and have watched over 90% of your videos since 22. Loved the Asian trip videos. Often too tired to leave a comment because I have dozens of Ukrainian channels to watch and there are only 24h a day.
When I was in a position I can effort to borrow money I feel I made it, I could do it. I feel happy even I know I will never will see it again. I could do it for my friend which means word to me. checked !
Thank you for answering all of these, this was very informative. You honestly are living my dream life and I'm trying to live a similar life. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like Johnny's making around $4k a month, and has a retirement plan set up on top of that. That's helpful information. Johnny, do you think your current life is more expensive or less expensive than a nomad lifestyle living out of a suitcase?
I'm spending more now as when you live out of a duffle bag, you don't buy much, here I spend on clothes, electronics, home goods, art, etc. Also the car and gas is a big expensive I normally don't have. In Thailand I was spending $1,000 a month on average.
I watched till the end I like your adventures I sometimes comment on Twitter but always positively. If I don't like someone I don't comment badly I just stop watching them.
Thank you Johnny for this very personal video through your answers to your subscribers' questions. I wish you happiness in Ukraine and being able to start your family... Take care of you 😊
Johnny 'Yes, I am concerned thst Russians might coming looking for me' Also Johnny 'So yeah, I live on the 9th floor of my building (just in case you're looking) 😂
In war there are many front lines, and many enemies. Just like you are using anonymous troll accounts to try and hurt Ukraine and those who support their freedom, I'm using my much larger platform to raise money and attention to help Ukraine.
Babushkas always seem to be on guard in front of Stalinka, Khrushchyovka & Brezhnevka apartment buildings. Maybe to a degree this is based on them wanting proper security of the buildings, just being yentas, and or spying on people rooted from the Soviet era?
I think you have very valuable affiliations and contacts with whom I would remain visibly active, under these circumstances. That in itself is dissuasive.
Luckily, Mykolayiv ain't destroyed as much as other cities closer to the frontline, most of the damage is being repaired or conserved for later. You are welcome to come here and check it for yourself, i'll be glad to help! And, of course, thanks a ton for your videos and positive vibes!
Believe me from experience…. Once your you move back to your own apt you will never rent it out again. Putting yourself through all this for some money that won’t make you poor by any means
I don't think Russia has time to deal with people whos against War in Ukraine, because let's be honest, 8/10 are against war. So Russia would not chase any of them as its just too many to chase. Just because you put videos on youtube, doesnt make you any bigger target( unless you tell everyday as solo topic how bad russia is, which is not the case as you mainly cover your life as topic ). I'm personally not on either side, but im realistic and know that Ukraine stands no chance ( if we look even on Russia impact on WW2 ) , Ofcourse its bad to see any country being at war, but if we look globally, Russia / Ukraine conflict is not only one thats active now, there are over 10 conflicts , just no one talks about other countries. Also its always very important to watch story from both sides. I watch Ukraines opinions and videos and i watch Russians, and i can clearly see so much BS going on on both sides.
It can not be clearer who is wrong and who is right in this war. If you say you're "not on either side", it only tells what kind of person you are. Those of us living next to russia know it very well and nothing justifies russia's aggression
@@ginniemess i didnt say it does justify its aggression. I dont understand how people would want to take weapons in their hands ( no matter offensive or deffensive side) and fight just cause someone said so. No doubt Putin is brutal man, but same we can say about USA presidents who killed loads of people in iraq, afghanistan and so on. World we live in is terrible and sad that 1 person can be responsible for millions of people lives and just because he wants people have to and will take weapons in their hands and fight for some religion or territory. Im person who would just abandon territory and move to live somewhere quiet as i value my life way higher than some sort of ''passport'' or ''nationality''
@@SkintTVman, as a Ukrainian i could not simply agree more with you. I'd rather be a refugee anywhere in the world, than being kept in Ukraine during war, country that wants me to die on frontlines just because they think I owe it to defend it. Heck, I don't even wanna have anything in common with the country, not to mention fighting for it, but it's a pure slavery for men here, so nothing can be done, unfortunately. In Ukraine democracy and freedom left the chat since the war started And as for Johnny's safety here, well he is even safer here than in some rich ass neighborhoods in the US. Nobody is going to do anything to him, just because he hates russia, cuz everybody does, and he is not that popular too, russia doesn't care about people like him
You are so refreshing . You tell like it is. We don't comment that much, but we are long time subscribers who watch every single video. And we say for those who are critical in what you. We suggest that you look at yourself in the mirror. All the best .👍👍 Johnny FD from Jim and Harriet Richmond, Virginia

Talking about Mexico not being safe at 42:00 as literally police sirens blaring in the background 😂 🚨
Interesting life Johnny. I lived and worked in Warsaw for two years. Poland is a great place to live, safe too. You may want to consider Poland…
I've spent a few months there, it's okay, but it was never for me. I wrote about it here: www.johnnyfd.com/2016/07/johnnys-guide-to-poland-warsaw-vs.html
Go to Toluca, Mexico it’s nice and cool temperature wise in the summer and while there go to a small town near by called Almoloya de Juarez where there’s something strange happening there in simplest terms , there’s a line on top of a smalll stream of water it’s like a thick spider web fell on top of the water, you can shake the water and it will form back the stream ends close to the cathedral church is we’re the line in the water is.
hi here is a like and a comment i recommend this channel thanks
When you do your jovial vlogs you can't figure out that behind that hides such a business orientated mind. Very inspiring. 💪🏼🫶🏼
Thanks, it's actually on purpose. The RUclips audience values just quick thoughts and funny adventures more than a serious business orientated mind. I've left all that behind when I sold my company and "retired."
Great video, I enjoy watching whatever you do, thanks Johnny and be well.
Greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪☘🇮🇪
Love your shirt, Johnny 😊
Thank you for speaking the truth and understanding world events and consequences. Trolls are disgusting but generate income for you. 💙💛💙💛
Thank you for sharing so much of your life with everbody
where can I get that shirt from?
I bought it at some random shop in Lviv.
Thank you for the kind comment. I'm glad I came back.
Same here. It was Bald who shared his videos partnering with Johnny FD and I've been a fan ever since.
Jonny you`re the good friend of Ukraine with really big heart! Thank you for all you do! God bless you!
I care about you and have watched over 90% of your videos since 22. Loved the Asian trip videos. Often too tired to leave a comment because I have dozens of Ukrainian channels to watch and there are only 24h a day.
Thanks for the support and for leaving a comment today!
Is youtube against your channel? Subscriber numbers are stuck at 248k for years. You actually have excellent content.
Could be, but I have to be honest, I LIKE his content BUT I dont love it, and I think thats what it comes down too personally.
I watched till the end I like your adventures I sometimes comment on Twitter but always positively. If I don't like someone I don't comment badly I just stop watching them.
0:30 i thought you weren't supposed to say 'the' ukraine
Hi Johnny, which provider are you using for fast internet in Kyiv?
Lanet. They are fantastic.
Thank you Johnny for this very personal video through your answers to your subscribers' questions. I wish you happiness in Ukraine and being able to start your family... Take care of you 😊
Puerto Escondido…it’s like the Thailand of Mexico! I’ve got a video from my time there! It’s great!
Awesome content as always Johnny
Дякую!❤
Great Q&A, Johnny, great explanation regarding the questions that were made. Love to listen to all your videos,
Johnny 'Yes, I am concerned thst Russians might coming looking for me'
Also Johnny 'So yeah, I live on the 9th floor of my building (just in case you're looking) 😂
Maybe it's psyop and i'm actually on the 10th floor waiting. 😂
When can we see you at the front line?
In war there are many front lines, and many enemies. Just like you are using anonymous troll accounts to try and hurt Ukraine and those who support their freedom, I'm using my much larger platform to raise money and attention to help Ukraine.
Nothing better to do with your life than typing silly comments on youtube? What a 🤡
Too late for question now, but i wonder wgat you think of the Palestine situation.
It's complicated, and non-comparable to the situation in Ukraine.
@@JohnnyFD No, it's not compareable, that's for sure. 😊
Why are you living there and not your apartment?
He rented his apartment out to a good tenant who is a diplomat for a good price. He is saving money renting a much cheaper place.

Johnny you are our Hero and Mentor. From the San Francisco Bay Area, Slava Ukraini !
Think Ukraine is planting a garden at her dacha and needs help. Also, she and one of her sons make drones in their apartment.
Babushkas guarding the door -- funny.
I first watched you on Bald and Bankrupt Johnny. It was good to see you bring Brandon in . Is Igor in Russia a suspicious character on RUclips?
Believe me from experience…. Once your you move back to your own apt you will never rent it out again. Putting yourself through all this for some money that won’t make you poor by any means
Thanks Johnny, now to the Taiwan shows.
I hope you enjoy the Taiwan series! Here's the series: ruclips.net/video/HABMiIr-cbs/видео.html
I love the t shirt!
Great video Johnny. I'm not leaving Ukraine either. This is now my home.
Loving the content
Thanks for being a subscriber and watching!
И что же побудило Россию начать бомбардировки городов ? При оккупации убивать и насиловать гражданских мирных жителей?
In Ukraine democracy and freedom left the chat since the war started
And as for Johnny's safety here, well he is even safer here than in some rich ass neighborhoods in the US. Nobody is going to do anything to him, just because he hates russia, cuz everybody does, and he is not that popular too, russia doesn't care about people like him
Man, Im concerned for your heart. Your labored breathing and the stress of living where you do.... Bro, just make your checkups.
