I met Gene at the 76 Truckstop in Effingham when 14 carat mind was #1. I was working the fuel and was tipped off he was coming in that night so I put his song on the jukebox before I waited on him and his Lincoln Town Car. I got to see him swell as he walked in through the glass. I was only 17 years old.
I owned a car wash in Paris Texas in the early 2000s. Gene would come by and get his truck cleaned every few months or so. He gave my Dad his greatest hits cd on one trip. On another visit I had Love in the Hot Afternoon playing and asked if the story had any truth. He just laughed and said "Those were some crazy times".
I remember his first visit. My Dad recognized him immediately. He went up and asked "You ever sing a song?". Lol, the look Gene gave him. They became friends quickly.

I took my then fiancee, in 1976 to a supper club in Vancouver B.C. and saw Gene along with another great country singer, Kenny Stockton. What a great evening and have been a loyal fan ever since. Thanks guys for all of the great music. Gene you are without a boubt "the best"!

@MarcosBryant-gk1jv Gene used to come to Hoopeston, to the sweetcorn festival. We would be at Jack and Barb Simpson's and Gene would come there and hang out. We would play and sing, times so long ago now past. They have all gone to their Heavenly peace. God be with Gene. So great he made the HOF.
