I respect Kirk Hammett for taking on the ownership of this iconic guitar. Yes, he paid a fortune for the original and I guess he can do what he pleases with it, but he's chosen to become it's custodian and consult with Gibson .... This core model - without the ageing to mimic the original guitar - is probably more what I'd want anyway. Good on you for getting one!

I watched an interview with Kirk and while he didn't say the exact price he paid, he really was adamant it was not as expensive as everyone thinks. He said something to the effect that it was kind of a unique opportunity and he only acquired it because it was not that much money. Now, that's all relevant. To the normal person a $100k is a friggin' house. To him, it's a days pay. So you can read that as you wish. If I can find the interview, I will come back and link it. I believe it was the Gibson Icons series.

@@aileaiho768 Kinda hard to distinguish whether you mean Kirk or this creator on YT?
Kirk believes he did not pay THAT much for the OG Greeny LP & it is a valuable historical instrument. What's not expensive to Kirk probably IS for us mere mortals.
I like the idea that you can get a basic unadorned 'Greeny' model now from Gibson. That is more a good purchase than the $50k replica.

Well... Kirk Hammett isn't a great guitarist. What he does with Metallica, he does it good. And that's what makes him great. If we're going to compare him to other guitarists, we would need to put forth specific criteria to objectively measure the greatness of guitarists. He's no Vai, EVH, Orianthy, Yvette Young, etc. There are MANY much better guitarists out there who are even just hobbyists that would win against Kirk in a guitar battle. HOWEVER, Kirk doesn't need to be a virtuoso. Most of us aren't, and it's a big world our there. Regardless, Kirk has found his style, he plays in the biggest metal band ever. He doesn't have to be a "great guitarist". We can be truthful and say "yeah, that guitarist isn't great, but they're a perfect fit for their band".
He's a great custodian of the guitar, even though he might not be a virtuoso. That's usually not how we measure greatness. It's mostly about the song, I'd say.

The only lead guitarist for The Beatles was George Harrison, the only one for The Kinks was Dave Davies, the only one for The Doors was Robbie Krieger, The Who's Pete Townsend etc etc etc...............Kirk Hammett is a perfect fit. No one ever mentions Marc Bolan and his ridiculous solo in "Get it on" but...who else would have, could have done it? But there's always Jan Akkerman................EVH...............Al DiMeola...................

firstly let me thank/congratulate you on being the first reviewer I've seen so far who has actually managed/been bothered to get those authentic Greeny tones out of one of these guitars, and played in a style that quite clearly nods heavily towards both Gary's and Peter's styles. A really great demo of what most Greeny fans will want to know...can it sound like the real thing? I think you nailed it. But most other reviews don't have a clue. Well done, cos it's not that easy, but there is a knack to it if you experiment a bit.
As for the guitar itself.... form a fan perspective (have to say I like both players, but favour Peter Green) i would have loved to see a version which more closely approximated the condition of the guitar when Peter sold it, (maybe a future model for Gibson) although that finish is beautiful. BUT... WTF have they put chrome hardware on it for? Let's have some nickel and let it age with the instrument, cos chrome looks hideous.

If you saw Kirk on Howard Stern, you could hear how much he reveres that guitar. I get why some people might wince at Kirk’s name being on it but I guarantee they’ll sell a lot more with it on there.

I saw Peter Green in 2010 and I'm sure he wasn't playing a les paul, it was a semi hollow if I remember correctly. The sound was spot on though, I assumed the out of phase mod had been made to whatever it was he was playing.

As far as polishing the satin finish out..........its your guitar, make it yours.
Congrats on the new Les Paul. I've an old 1986 Les Paul Custom that I installed un-potted Burstbuckers, I wired the pickups out of phase, it has a similar effect of the magnetic phase shift.
Either way, cool guitar, love the top and color.

Lovely guitar, beautiful flame, and it sounds great. I'd say it's well worth investing the money to get a proper nitro finish done by someone who knows what they are doing. Replace the chrome parts for aged nickel and you'll have a fabulous Greeny for a fraction of the 20-50 thousand ones!

I don’t have a Les Paul. I guess my ideal has always been an ebony 50’s with P90’s. Gold tops and Juniors also compel me. It’s that P90’s thing . But I must say, I really dig the reverse pickup, that’s my favorite humbucker sound now. (PS: maybe it’s a generational thing but give Kirk some credit. In the violin world instruments are known by their current owners as well, even if Paganini played it whenever ago.)

Yep. I've got the Les Paul Tribute in Tobacco Burst and it's glorious to me. I also love the literal "feel" of it as well. There are pics of it on my channel if you want to see it. I actually didn't know they made an SG like that and was actually telling someone not too long ago that I think they should do a Tribute line of ALL their guitars with the satin finish and an SG was one of the ones I was thinking about. A Firebird would also be incredible!

Beautiful guitar but still out of my price range. Best I could do was about 10 years ago I bought a Chibson aged version (with a blank headstock), ripped everything metal off it and redid the frets & tuners. Dropped P90's in, a new harness and slapped a Bigsby on. I was going for a Greeny meets Neil Young vibe. Works a treat and sounds huge. Great playing as usual, mate.

It will always be Gary Moore's Greeny Les Paul, to me. But, "METALLICA" moves product. Pete and Gary wrote some iconic songs/licks/riff on it. It's not like Kirk wrote; Enter Sandman, Master Of Puppets, Fade To Black...etc. That's fine with me. I've got a 2013 Gary Moore LP. I love it

Good idea to polish this instrument. I did this to my Epiphone Lazarus - wich, of course, has a poly finish - and it is now quite glossy just like the original. The maple veneer even now has got a nice 3D effect to it - just a bit but it's there. I used the MusicNomad Guitar Polish that even smells like banana 😋.
Who knows, maybe one day I will screw the pickguard off and put in some Greenie style PUs and change two knobs...
    Thank you for this video!

  • @socialmeaslesinpartnership1252

I don't think you can go wrong with the finish on that guitar, it so obviously suits you and floats your boat. You can scuff that up any old way and put stickers of places you've played on it...whatever. I think it looks great "as is"............... but I know what you mean about a real nitro job.
With that in mind..................you could take it a decent guitar shop and get that done. If you want a nitro gloss, get one. T Cut or 3M on a satin finish won't get you there (I know this!), pay the bucks as a "one time only", any experienced sprayer can do it, they do it all the time. It'll look great from day one and will age....just the way they do and you can't hurry that. That's a really fine maple top. Is it worth a couple of hundred bucks?
If you're pushed for the money just wait a bit.............so what? I'd have it "as is", I have a satin Gold Top 'Paul Tribute and I can't leave that anywhere, everyone wants to steal it and it's aging wonderfully but...strokes for folks. If I wanted it nitro gloss, I'd get it done that way.
Then...............don't do what they all do................sell it and kick themselves forever. So many guys flip guitars! That one has deffo got your number - keep it.
Do that, get it re-finished just the exact way you see it, play it, keep it for your very classy blues playing, when you marry make your wife lick it, when you're old hang it on the wall and when you're gone, have it pushed out to sea and burnt if all your kids are too tone-deaf to play it. Tone to die for and great chops and licks!
Nice video, thank you. Get a re-finish if that's what you want.
