Hi Mom. Your son created one of, if not the best video game channel on youtube. It has touched so many of us and is a wonderful revisiting of many of our fond childhood memories. You should be very proud of him.
For myself it was Super Mario World that holds this nostalgia for me. It's been my happy place since I got the SNES for Christmas at 5. I played more NES because we were poor and $1 games at the flea market were our preoccupation. Great video, I know that it was way more enjoyable to open and play with, surely no regrets.
The love for your family and especially your dad and amount of nintendo entertainment value in your videos and retro life far exceeds any material worth today and we lucky people all get a free share of it every time you upload. Nintendo would probably be in awe if they saw this channel. You are the luckiest little boy from the nintendo era and your dad was just awesome
Love your channel man. Thaks a lot. It makes me feel grateful for the childhood and pre-teen years I had, even with the bad moments. Meant a lot to me owning and playing these games. It really helped me to keep the innocence and joy I still have now at my 40´s. Hugs from Ecuador.
I remember my dad somehow found a copy and gave it to me for my 10th birthday. I was the only kid in my neighborhood that had it and had a sleepover and we played it all night! The hype for this game was immense, especially after The Wizard movie!
You know, I’ve mastered Mario 3. Now, 31 years later, I think I’ve forgotten most of the game having NOT played it in three decades. Like Punch Out, I used to play that from start to finish without being hit. When I played in on the Switch, my game was nowhere near flawless. Maybe if I spend more time playing it I’ll be good again.
Whatever the subject is, I’ll never get tired of watching authentic footage from that era. From the homes to the video stores to whatever. The excitement and feeling of surprise when you got a new game or console from your parents. Thanks for another fun and endearing video!
I would have told myself to go to GameStop and buy that brand new copy of Shante that I was contemplating buying at that time, and I am still kicking myself to this day of not buying that game
Yes! Man every time I see this video I always think about how you had this gold in your hand and had no clue! You must have been such an early adopter of the game!
Your aunt Michelle is the best! she understood what gaming meant to the family, The smile she puts out you can really tell she was happy and genuine . Reminds me of when my great grandma would buy me sega or gameboy games for Christmas.
I remember my brother gave me the money to buy SMB3 and we couldn't find it anywhere. I bought Super C instead. Then a couple weeks later he told me to get him something from his jacket and there it was. I don't know where he was able to find it. That had to be my favorite NES game ever. So many hours spent on it. Big shout out to my big bro, whose name is coincidentally also Mario btw.
That's a good uncle. I sometimes get nostalgic and sad when I play old 8 bit retro games because it reminds me of a simpler time of my youth. The older people I remember at time have passed on, grandparents, uncles.
To this day; I still wonder how they made that Super Mario Bros 3 commercial with the hundreds of people in different colored shirts; panning out to reveal a Mario Picture on the face of the planet. I know it involves editing, but I would love to see how!
I worked at Kay-Bee in 1990. I remember when that cartridge came out how impossible it was to keep in stock. We kept an actual waiting list, on paper and everything, with names and phone numbers. However, being an employee had its advantages and I wound up snagging one of the first copies. I couldn't say whether it was the error version, but chances are it was, just by the time frame. It may still be at my mom's house. I'll have to look for that one next time I visit.
I’m assuming this changed into KB toys which went out of business in early 2000? Never knew that was the original name. Love hearing stories like this.
I love your perspective about opening that game and being glad it was opened. Art is created to enjoy. That game has infinite value opened being played rather than sealed.

I love your video & the reminiscing, but the WATA/Heritage Auctions artificial pricing is nowhere near what a normal person could actually expect to get for the game. There's a reason they're in the middle of a class action lawsuit right now.
great video as always Tyler 👍 Well, I don't think grading is good in general, it's my opinion what others do is not my business, but these prices that are later told are destroying the retro games market. Soon you won't be able to afford any games at all because the prices are so high
Great story! I remember my mom trying to surprise me with a trip to the mall to purchase Super Mario 3. It was no where to be found! I was bummed and we were about to leave when my mom suggested checking out JC Penny. I was like...mom no way that store will have that. Sure enough as we walked into the store, in the clear glass display case was a copy of Super Mario 3. Good times back then!!
When i was growing up it used to take an ACT OF GOD to even get a game. As I recall, it was a full year after acquiring the NES before my parents even bought a f'n game. Even then it was on sale due to it being a returned opened game, SMB 2. And yes, I did get SMB 3 strangely and for no reason, ie-Birthday, Christmas.
The game was never worth $150k. It was manipulated to make the general population think it was. Sales were padded, and the buyer was never disclosed because it was a fictional inside sale.
Your Aunt is awesome for going above and beyond to get that copy. Reminds me of when I had my mom drive us around for miles, literally 30+ mile radius in hopes of getting a fat ps3 at launch. Those things were incredibly hard to obtain at launch. Sadly I had to settle for a 360 but would later get my ps3. Loved mom for putting up with me haha

Such an awesome story Tyler. Awesome Aunt. I remember having every kid in the neighborhood in my living room when SMB3 came out cause I have an awesome mother & I was 1 of few to be lucky enough to get a copy when it came out. I used to have several sealed video games in my collection but have since sold them off. I bet those memories are worth way more than a $150,000. Shout out to dad to though because my step father was obsessed with the cam corder back then & i think every home video i have now the whole family tells him to shut it off stop recording and as an adult now Im just so thankful to have them home videos. So props to dad for capturing it all 30+yrs ago 👍
I am 39 years old from Singapore and I played Super Mario 3 back in the day as well. The 90s life was so much more laidback and simpler back then. The older games had so much appeal and replayability unlike most modern games today. I miss the good old times...thanks for taking me a trip back to memory lane.
Even more so than opening that copy. If she would have bought 10 copies of the 30 that were at that store.. She'd have over 1 million right there! I ALWAYS think about.. Crap, I should have bought a bunch of this/that and stored them. Only IF! But again.. Growing up as a kid in the 80s/90s.. You really didn't know the future value of these things!
I am so glad that I'm a 90s kid... I mostly grew up around Super Mario World because my older brother and sister would play that game for hours we would have had neighborhood kids come over to my house and play video games long before Wi-Fi existed. You know what's crazy that I have an aunt name Michelle and his son (my cousin)is video game major even though he's a 2000s kid
I wonder how many people have a personal video of this game sealed in there home video collection. Your videos take me back an open up so many great memories in my mind what an amazing thing to have your collection of memories is so special its great that you share them with the world 😊
What an awesome and unique way of sharing your experiences with the authentic footage, top storytelling my man. As a big fan of watching old videos from my own childhood, seeing everyone in a different era, this hit close to home. Thanks for making it, enjoyed following your story!
I have a copy of super Mario bros 3 same era on it but I through all boxes away I remember ripping it open to play it ! I still have the game it's to much of my child hood
It’s amazing you still have that family footage. We hardly have any footage of our family those years in the 80s and 90s. There’s so many things we wish we kept sealed. My whole WWF hasbro wrestling collecting being one of them
The inflated video game prices are all a scam. The people who started it owned the auction house and appraisers. Millions of copies were sold, bizarre to think that it would be rare.
3:47 long island expressway in suffolk county 5:43 commack cinemas saw every movie as a kid in the 80s there its a lowes home improvement store and a king kullen now
I still have a left bros. Not sealed or anything and never for sale. The era the nastalgia the memories... those are priceless. I love seeing these videos man. I wish my family had done something like documenting so much.
Just because some idiot pays 150k at auction doesn't mean it's worth that amount of money, look at the idiot that bought the rare super Mario bros game for 1.5 million, now it's worth 15k because no one is paying more then that for that copy, it's one thing to be valued and another inflating the price on a single item
Honestly it doesn't get better than this, thanks for sharing your memories and videos with us. It's a treat to see this footage and to watch everything you've shown us so far. Great work mate
What a magic little video. Made the nostalgia really hit, with an awesome fact from SMB3 misprint. Im surprised how much this video made myself reminisce the 90s as a little kid. Funny capturing that holy grail on video, pure evidence and a fun trip down memory lane.
Just tried playing SM3 on my switch cant believe how rusty I am. Even being a Dark Souls veteran. Also man there are so many times I wished I held on to older stuff being blown away how much things are worth these days.
The 150 is so overblown and all done with shady tactics. Heritage auctions and WATA are in hot water right now for inflating these prices to make the grading company and auction house look good. You never would of got anywhere near 150k for your copy.
Dude the one time my parents took my nes away and Mario 3 , they hid it in the closet on the top shelf , I don’t even remember what I did but I remember it hurt bad 😢😂
I want to point out that this game is not worth 156k. That's coming from Heritage auctions, which have been caught colluding and artificially raising prices on sealed games. Do not be fooled by the value of this game. It's not worth that much.
That cookie dunk is OP i smiled dude you have my full attention I grew up in a poor family i got a video game system in 95 in which my mum got a creditcard to pay for good bless her soul still kick'en strong love ya mum
I see my kids get up early and go straight to the playstation and my mom gets mad at me for letting them.. but i remember how happy i was to wake up early and play my mario games.. i actually get happy seeing them play so early and i see myself... i let them enjoy childhood.
I loved this game as a kid too. Sundays used to go to the pastor's house and play this game with his kids until my parents came to pick me up after they finished work. Played this for hours and hours.
The most amazing gift your Dad gave you is these recordings and amazing video game related relationships. I was 1 in a house of 5 that cared anything for video games.
I got my copy of Super Mario 3 for Easter Sunday in 1990 when I was 10. My little brother got TMNT. Still have both in my collection today. Like you I have the original variant and its priceless to me as it was the game that launched me into wanting to become a game developer...and I made video games for 20 years before switching to medical software.
I don't have anything that is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, but I did have games that are worth quite a bit now such as the SNES Final Fantasy 3, Mega Man 7, and Chrono Trigger that today are worth quite a bit. I still have the original cartridges so if I wanted to, I could sell them for a decent chunk of change. And had i never opened them, I'd easily have a couple grand for them now. But even if I could go back to the time when I was a young girl and tell myself not to open them, I don't think I would. I loved these games as a young girl, and replayed them dozens of times. I wouldn't want to take those experiences away from myself. Although perhaps telling myself to try and buy a 2nd copy would not be a bad idea. Mega Man 7 especially, it wasn't really in stores very much. It didn't click to me that it was a rare release. I found it in a more or less "Mom and pop" store, and that was the only time I ever saw it sitting on a store shelf. Being the big Megaman fan that I was, I didn't want to let the opportunity pass so I picked it while I could. I fortunately had enough money saved away to get it. Definitely don't feel bad about opening up Mario 3. There's no possible way you or your family could have known it was going to be worth so much 30-40 years later. Nobody was thinking about stuff like that back at the time. Nobody was lookig at cover labels and inspecting them for minor variations.
Thanks for sharing! This was just one of those moments where you had to be there...and our parents pulled off minor miracles to get us these things. My mom took me after school to a shop downtown where we waited for two hours for UPS to deliver their shipment...and we got it! 🤗
You were one lucky kid in early 1990. Mario 3 and a Ninja Turtles toy are the best gifts you could receive during that period. GGs to your Aunt for being able to find it.
1989-1990 WAS The era of Mario 3 and Turtle Mania! I have Fond memories being a 7 year old riding on both of them! Especially going to go see TMNT ‘90 during Spring break!
What an absolutely amazing video. Im so happy I found your channel. Im 8 years younger than you but I remember when I was the same age as you in this video, experiencing Super mario bros 3 over and over again. What an amazing time it was to be alive then.
Ahhhh... Good old Super Mario 3. I remember when a guy from school borrowed his copy to me. I didn't even sleep that night. All i could think off was playing the game. I dind't even like the dude, he was a friend of a friend of mine, but somehow he got me games... But thanks to him i got to play Super Mario 3 and one of my favourite off all time, Gargoyle's Quest II. One of the few i managed to complete on the NES aslong as Metroid... Amazing memories right there...
Bro, I’m 39 and you have no idea! I remember getting Mega Man x 3 on SNES brand new and sealed on my birthday and just ripping that plastic wrap and box up like it was nothing in a matter of seconds, same goes for countless other super high value games, a link to the past, Donkey Kong country etc if only I knew. 😭
Really Loved the nostalgia feels in this video!!! Crazy story with the Mario Bros 3 variant being worth so much $$$, Mario 3 is also the top pick game from my childhood growing up!!! And What’s even better about the video is that I’m from Long Island and as soon as I saw the shots Walt Whitman mall and commack cinemas and I knew instantly- I used to go to the lake grove toys r us all the time growing up
Awesome memories! I think that $150k sale was approaching peak covid collecting craziness of 2020/21. Another sealed left-bros. in even higher grade sold last summer for $60k.
Some things can't be bought...in your case, it was and the memories should be priceless. Funny thing, that was a moment that I didn't know about as I didn't follow up on home consoles at the time. I had no idea the craze that went on regarding Mario Bros 3 and to be honest, it's probably one of the Mario games I have only played very little of lol.
Wow! Such a fun and nostalgic watch! Also, apparently, I have the mistake version of the game! Of course, I don’t have the box anymore, but still cool to see the error on the game pak.
Of all games of our past this one stands out above all! Love, mom

Much love my guy and i am really hurting with my dad who recently departed, however, where i failed in life with money and career, other than a very good strong 20 year+ marriage, i will now be set up for life thanks to his hard work and career success....
Dad never ever let me down and went far beyond his call of duty....
I hope dad, that i handle everything you left to me correctly and not fail you like i did in my adolescents....
Life hurts sometimes but games really are my closest link to my dad...
I wish I could go back in time and tell my young self to not sell my original Super Nintendo and games to a pawn shop.
This video made me go check out my original copy of Super Mario Bros. 3 and I don't have the rare version...bummer.
Oh man, seeing footage of Walt Whitman mall in its heyday is CRAZY. It’s still around believe it or not!
It seems the concept "Stock One, Rock One" did not really come in the minds in the late 80's/early 90's.
Love this story. Nintendo was such a big part of peoples childhood. Aunt Michelle is awesome.
1) your aunt Michelle is gorgeous
2) does she know about this? What did she say !?
Commack, NY. Grew up 30 minutes west of there, now I live 30 minutes east. My aunt also got my Mario 3 in 1990.
Well???? What happened to the game??
What a magic little video. Made the nostalgia really hit, with an awesome fact from SMB3 misprint. Im surprised how much this video made myself reminisce the 90s as a little kid. Funny capturing that holy grail on video, pure evidence and a fun trip down memory lane.
i was just thinking to myself how much i loved mario bros 3 growing up. Imo its the best mario game next to super mario world. great video tyler.
Just tried playing SM3 on my switch cant believe how rusty I am. Even being a Dark Souls veteran. Also man there are so many times I wished I held on to older stuff being blown away how much things are worth these days.
It is strange how Mario 3 hit differently to all the previous games with Mario in them, it just felt extra special for some reason.
The 150 is so overblown and all done with shady tactics. Heritage auctions and WATA are in hot water right now for inflating these prices to make the grading company and auction house look good. You never would of got anywhere near 150k for your copy.
Right? On PriceCharting a brand new "left bros" SMB3 is like 700 bucks.
Dude the one time my parents took my nes away and Mario 3 , they hid it in the closet on the top shelf , I don’t even remember what I did but I remember it hurt bad 😢😂
Man that’s a story I’m sure many can relate to
I want to point out that this game is not worth 156k. That's coming from Heritage auctions, which have been caught colluding and artificially raising prices on sealed games. Do not be fooled by the value of this game. It's not worth that much.
Great to point this out. It would be excellent to see some auctions of a sealed copy in 2024.
This is awesome!! And aunt Michelle was a fox!!
You never owned a $150,000.00 Mario 3. You opened it before it got that valuable.
I see aunt Michelle, I click, and I watch it buddy
I'm a simple man: I see something from My Retro Life and/or Cinemassacre, I watch it.
I Am SO HAPPY this channel is back up! i was so depressed when it was taken down before.
Tyler even the manual have the left bros !!!
That cookie dunk is OP i smiled dude you have my full attention
I grew up in a poor family i got a video game system in 95 in which my mum got a creditcard to pay for good bless her soul still kick'en strong love ya mum
The amount of screaming and pulling out my hair i did when i saw your copy ⛄️😭😭😭
Are you still in contact with Many?
Would love to see you two do a video together.
Yes! All the time. We have done a few videos together on the channel. Look up “Beating TMNT in 1990”
@@MyRetroLife Thanks!
I will check them out right away!
I first played SMB 3 in December of 1989.
13:29 I still call her Toadstool :P
I could never play platformers with the nes advantage. That’s peak gamer skill in the 90’s
There’s a reason why Manny was “The King of Games”
@@MyRetroLife Ty for responding! My father passed away early 2023. Your videos hit home with me
Bro got the Donkey Kong hair??? 😮
Thanks for sharing! This was just one of those moments where you had to be there...and our parents pulled off minor miracles to get us these things. My mom took me after school to a shop downtown where we waited for two hours for UPS to deliver their shipment...and we got it! 🤗
Very cool, man
Your story
Felt like a time machines for us that had similar experience
Awesome vid man! Hitting all the nostalgic buttons, big-time! Masterfully made.
Amazing channel. Were the same generation so this is blast of nostalgia from my childhood
