New subscriber from Australia and I will call myself a Mormon. We are a peculiar people. Glad I found you, Kish. I'll drink coffee on your behalf.

I grew up Mormon, we called ourselves Mormon, and we liked it. The rule for the press was to use the full name of the church at least once, and that's how they did it in the Meet the Mormons movie too.
Mormon is so much easier to say than the full name, so of course that would be used more often.
When Nelson gave the talk about Jesus being offended by the name Mormon, and it being a victory for Satan.. that didn't make any sense to me. That goes against points made in several previous conference talks and the whole Meet the Mormons campaign I was happy to participate in.
I went along with Nelson, and used the full name of the church all the time after that, but I didn't correct other people. It's a commandment for me to follow, not a rule to enforce with others.
I think it's respectful to refer to the church by the full name, since at least the leader wants that. I feel the same way about trans people or any people that change their name. If you can, use the name they want.
If you have lost your faith in the church, then it is just a corporation, nothing spiritual or divine about it. I understand faithful members don't see it that way, but I think using that name just emphasizes the point that maybe everything you think you're giving to God is really just going to some powerful men.
Some have found that those men are lying, manipulating, and coercing people into giving the church money, and then they're not using the money to do the good they could do, and even doing some harm. People are getting hurt, so anger and disrespectful language is an understandable reaction, from that perspective. Faithful members don't have that perspective, so it makes sense that using the corporation name can be offensive to them, and that's something to consider.

Thank you for those thoughtful and insightful comments! I agree that it is respectful to call the LDS Church by its full name in certain contexts.

My experience listening to John D.'s Broadcasts is that he has more times than not gone out of his way to level the playing field in conversations with guests and not go out of his way to show bias against the church. A few times he caught himself in mid-speak and corrected and apologized for his words. I don't know if you have listened to a lot of his broadcasts or just a few but it seems a bit of cherry picking considering his complete oeuvre of broadcasts. I think that your example from a broadcast may perhaps be the exception to the rule instead of the rule but if you have listened to a lot of broadcasts, more than my experience, you may have a point. I did listen to your other broadcast on a critique of John D. But I still stand by my conclusion regarding your assessment of him.

I think he tries harder than a lot of others to be fair to the LDS Church. I don't disagree with you on that, and I like the fact that he tries. That said, I think his bias against it regularly shows, and I am not surprised by that either. The question, in my mind, is what kind of posture is appropriate for him to take, and people will differ on that. Certainly, most active, faithful LDS people will probably not agree that he strives to be fair. Often, I see LDS people laugh at the suggestion that he strives for that. I don't agree with them, but I do think he sticks his toe over the line of fairness in some respects.

    In general no matter what

    But that is truth
Why would we water down what the truth actually is ???
And we do need to be sensitive to those who choose that
I think speaking the truth matters more than anything else , evil should not be defended in anyway shape or form
We have to decide where we stand .
Living in the hard truth or living in the comfortable lie .
I think we need to think about that .
We don’t have to tare down the church to stand for the truth , we can do it in a loving kind manner .
So there comes a point that we have to decide where we stand because in the end our integrity is all that Matters . ❤

Spiritual truth is somewhat subjective. Different people find spiritual nourishment in different places.

    The word Mormon is fine
I see nothing wrong with calling it the Mormon church it’s been the Mormon church for decades , that’s what makes it unique😊

I've heard that changing the name of the Church and all the various entities (Mormon Tabernacle Choir, etc.) cost well over 50 million dollars. I have a hard time thinking Jesus would be pleased with this business decision.

@@TheBigCheese-x7m 50 million is pennies when the church has 200 billion.
Actually, pennies is overstating it. They have 4,000 x 50 million dollars.
They could change the name 4,000 times before running out of money.
Then, imagine how many people that could feed, house, and heal. Yet? We get name changes, revelation directly from Jesus, according to Nelson.
