I had this idea of going gray that I did not see in your video. I would like your thoughts on it. I have colored my hair for almost 30 years. My gray hair does grow fast. I was thinking of continuing coloring it with a semi permanent color that washes out. I was thinking to do that, until my demarcation line reached my chin, and then washing the semi permanent out to see what my actual hair looks like. Supposedly, semi permanent hair color washes out in "28 washing's". For me, it washes out much faster. But I haven't used it for quite a few years. Could you tell me your thoughts on this method? I will be using natural instincts hair color by Clairol, I believe
@@bres143 I'm afraid that doesn't work very well - unfortunately, any dye that has the word "permanent" in it will permanently stain your hair and you will have to grow it out (it won't wash out, no matter what they say). I used semi-permanent dye on my hair when I was dyeing, and believe me, that didn't make my transition any easier - still took me a long time to grow out. Instead, if you don't want to deal with a skunk stripe, watch this video for some alternative solutions - hope that helps! ruclips.net/video/xwQ7cNPVQ-8/видео.html
I'm finally fully grown out. I left it long, so. 3 years to grow it out. Now I'm about 3 inches below my collar bone....all natural and I love it ..thanks…
I stripped my colored hair at home and dyed it lightest blonde. I cut my hair as short as I could stand it, just touching my shoulder. My hair is light grey with salt and pepper low lights. The lightest blonde mixed in with the grey very well during the year it took to grow out.
@@linda2073my friend was blond and let her white hair grow in. She is now a beautiful white. She looks amazing. I am dark with years of box dye. It's much easier and less dramatic having light hair to grow grey into light hair. People also don't suddenly perceive you as much older. My friend still has light hair like she always had. I have to go from very dark to very light.
Its so strange to me now I am a year in to growing out from blonde to grey,if you're an older male going grey you're George Cluney,if you are female you are letting yourself go. This attitude needs to be challenged. Why so much pressure to dye our hair? Noone has said anything but no doubt my grey hair with blonde streaks is getting tongues wagging. Which sais more about them than it does about me. I have discovered my eyes look bluer with grey hair, and I can wear stronger lipstick colours,so I am enjoying trying out new things.
I'm going cold turkey. It's kinda fun, actually. Very calico. Cold turkey shows that you don't care what others think, and you could possibly give others inspiration to do the same. Just be stylish about it. If you curl your hair or do beachy waves, the demarcation doesn't show up as much. 😊
Yes! One of my favorite things about going gray cold turkey was the freedom to show everybody that I didn’t care what they thought - that’s a great point ❤️
@@KatieGoesPlatinum yes! "The problem is not the problem. The problem is your attitude about the problem" I think that's a johnny depp quote, but I live by those words. Haha. I just own it. Put some twists in my hair, wear some old rock tees, hold my head up and smile. Don't hide it. It could help give others the courage. 🖤
A friend of mine went to hairdresser and did a few gray highlights to blend with some of her grays. The result was stunning! Then she used purple shampoo and mask 3 times a month. She uses coconut oil every weekend to keep it soft.
I’m glad your friend had a good experience with highlights (not everybody does)! Re: coconut oil, here’s a great article you might want to share with her (gives some tips on how to safely use coconut oil on gray hair): quicksilverhair.com/reconsider-using-coconut-oil-on-your-hair/
Very informative video. A lot of information I could have used during my transition. I was a dark brunette. I transitioned back in 2020 and I just decided to go cold turkey, with the whole demarcation line and all. But a quarter of the way I discovered a color depositing conditioner that was a game changer for me (Overtone). I used the Extreme Silver color and the new growth turned a beautiful dark silver and I also noticed that the brassiness on my old, faded hair was dramatically toned down. Although the demarcation line was still there, it appeared to blend in better. As the hair grew I just continued cutting the tips and my hair has never felt healthier. The color is temporary and does fade away. That's was how I managed to go through my awkward stage. I still use the product and I bounced back from Extreme Silver to vibrant silver just to give highlights to my white hair. I hope this tip can help someone out there.
Hi what great channel you have. I am natural dark brunette and mixed race so darker skin. Ive decided to grow my dyed hair out and I am about 4 months in. Worried about the thinning I’m experiencing and would rather focus on the health of my hair, than looking younger and conforming to the norms society forces upon us at times. Thank you, for sharing your knowledge 😊❤
You're welcome! I'm so glad you enjoy my videos. I hope your hair thinning goes away once you are fully gray - mine did! It was such a relief to get thicker hair again.
I'm will be 50 in june. I decided to go cold turkey 3 months ago...I have such mixed emotions at this point. But, I'm going for it! Thank you so much for this video ❤
You’re welcome! I LOVED the cold turkey method - if it’s bothering you, try to wait to make any decisions until your gray hair is down past your eyebrows. A lot of women seem to find it easier to keep going once they reach that point and can see the beautiful new growth.
So glad I found you! I’m 59 and currently rockin 1/3 brown, 1/3 auburn and 1/3 silver with two obvious, white “horns”. I feel so dumpy right now and it takes real resolve to pass the hair color aisle at the grocery store. I have about 2” of virgin hair which is salt/pepper. I’d love to visit a salon and do a pixie, but I’m too chicken… but I’m leaning in that direction. Saving this video
@@Cat_festation do it when you are ready. It has to happen on your own terms. Maybe research pictures of short pixie cuts that you like. Take them with you to the salon.
I quit coloring my hair with henna about four years ago, because while my hair was about 20% gray, the roots were showing so fast that I couldn’t keep up with them. My husband trims my elbow length hair, and he applied the henna for me, it was messy and time consuming. He was telling me that I should just go silver and embrace the color. Of course he was already fully silver, and he looks great with it. So I did not have to deal with being told I needed to keep coloring my hair. So I would definitely recommend that when the silver strands come in, but to not fight it with putting toxic chemicals on your head. And honestly most of the hair color looks unnatural and monotone, like cheap plastic wig hair. So I think going silver early is the best option so you are not dealing with such a drastic change.
Using the L’Oréal spray in the part. Working out pretty good. I have curly wavy hair. I am not bothered by what others think and say. I am doing this for me.
I have very long hair and dark brunette. I am also in the public eye. So I let my roots grow out a couple inches, then I took demi perm (brunette) color and painted it in small streaks at the roots, leaving most of the siliver, I then had extensions made for me in a combo of brunette and silver hair. That way instead of looking like I was letting myself go, it looked intentional and I can't say how many compliments I have received. I now only have about 3 inches left of the dark box color left. Almost there.
I totally buzzed my head. My husband was not to thrilled because this is the third time ive done this. Lol. Ive finally made up my mind to stay white, I believe. Im in the ugly grow out stage, but im wanting to have longer hair. Wish me luck.
I went the cold turkey route. I got more compliments seeing my gray coming through. It took a few years but I wouldn't go back for anything. I just got tired of dying my hair. Thank you for putting this together. Nana in Peeples Valley Arizona
I’m using the grey blending method with silver highlights & monthly toner. I was also using semipermanent color for the last year before I made the decision to embrace my silver. I’m so lucky to have an amazing stylist who is totally onboard with my transition! Love your blog & RUclips!
I am growing tired of chasing the bottle, but not quite ready yet to natural. Right now I'm in a stage where I am coloring the white parts with lighter brown hair dye, so it gives a highlighted sort of effect. Coloring my hair today I parted it an noticed quite a bit of silvery threads so I'm not going to be able to hide it much longer. I paused the video and think the easiest way to go gray is to buy gray hair color and color it all over. I'm just lightening my hair in stages at this point. One day I will be brave and kick the color habit. Thanks for your video, it helped me realize that one way or another, the day will come.❤
I have been separating my white hair out (crown -- front and back and around my face) and dyed the rest for almost a decade. I love the combinations of white, brown and my favourite black cherry!
The last technique that you showed on this video was a revelation! THANK YOU!!! Stripping the color off of my hair just did not sit well with me, and now I've found the solution that I was seeking! I so appreciate you!
A big life change inspired me to stop the dye in 2018, and I'm soooooo happy I did! My hair was dry and drab for years and I got so tired of the chemicals and mess and feeling "not put together" when my hair started to sparkle. Where did that idea even come from?! The stripe was not my favorite for the first two months, but after that it got better and better and I never looked back. I had fun twisting it back and with braids, headbands, and ponytails. I did some blonde highlights and cut it to my chin, and then grew it back long. It makes wearing eyeliner more fun, and even the colors you opt for evolve (I used to wear mostly gray!). Mostly I felt more ME, and it was a really cool science experiment. Katie was a HUGE inspiration through the whole process, and for better or worse, it IS easier and more fun challenging a norm if you have support and encouragement!
Thanks for this video! I am going to try to have more positive about the transition! i am almost 70 and have been coloring my hair for many years! it has been a relief but doing it the transitional way.
I am 58 and 6 weeks in going cold turkey. Thanks for the inspiration to go for it. I have watched several of your videos and am posting a short one myself (more or less to be accountable for my decision) and maybe encourage someone else. 😬👍
Whoever calls you stupid is someone going gray that’s not ready to face the facts. I’m 35 and am seeing the firsts grays in my dyed red hair and I appreciate the work you put in to bring this info to me ❤️
I’m 76 y/o and starting to go gray. I’m trying to decide if I should go fully gray at the salon or just let it grow out. Right now I only have 2 small gray sections on my dark hair and I don’t like salt and pepper! …need to make a decision. Thank you for this video. 🤗
Dark brunette and went cold turkey. Had Calico and skunk. Felt it made me look terrible. But I put so much time into it that I decided to ride it out. Glad that's over!
Oh wow that was an awesome video. I did my growth out a bit different but I was super grey, I’m 65 and started greying at 16. I kept my hair toned to almost platinum, at home i used a 10/0 for about 20 years. Then I just stopped. There was only a very slight demarcation, just slightly warmer than my grow out. I use a purple shampoo and that is about it. Your hair is gorgeous
I'm growing mine out, it's bra length, will take forever. I cover the brassy part with mofojang silver hair mud. I mix it with conditioner and silicone to make it less stiff. As I Am also has a great silver color that is less stiff. Also there are silver hair sprays. I use these things because I've had NO luck with blue shampoo or toners.
I did the big chop. I had dyed light brown caramel hair. It was time. Its growing out. A lot of my girlfriends loved it, but an old boyfriend thought I looked "old". I left him behind. Im a widow, he was an old boyfriend who is 73. Im 65. WTHeck was he thinking was going to happen at our ages? I must admit it made me sad for awhile, but now Ive dug in my heels and Im not dealing with people that cant accept me for who i am.
Wonderful video - inspirationally presented! I have natural dark brown hair, gone gray with a one-inch white area from ear to ear, so I dyed it light golden blonde for several years. Decided to go gray a few months ago and was doing it cold turkey. The golden blonde was quite brassy so the salt and pepper gray looked dramatically different from the brassy blonde. I decided to continue with the process of cold turkey but first I dyed it one last time using Nice 'n Easy Soft Silver to lessen the dramatic difference between the gray and the blonde. It did the trick!
This video was so helpful! Ive been doing the dye strip method so far and i have about 6 inches of growth underneath. The other day at work I wore my hair halfway pulled up and showed all my grey and so many people told me it looked beautiful. Makes me not be so nervous about what i will look like when fully grey. Thank you for all the info for us women. I intend to fully embrace my grey hair but this helps with the transition for sure!
I got a “color gloss” in April and I’m loving the results of this method! Almost a year later, the light brown dye is naturally washing out and it’s gradually getting more white. A gloss is acidic (and not permanent), so no damage. The white “highlights” 😂 also blend nicely. When I’m totally ready to go gray, I’ll just let the gloss wash out gradually, like it is now 😊
I'm so glad it worked out well for you! Some of the women in my Facebook group have had issues with glosses staining their gray hair so I'm glad that didn't happen to you! ♥
That’s the method I’m using! I love how my gray/white hair looks with just a slight brown tinge of color over it. If I apply it to dry hair and leave on under a cap for 1/2 hour before rinsing it really lasts. Demarcation line not bad at all with this method. When I’m ready, I’ll stop glossing and it will be a fresh head of gray, undamaged hair. It’s been fun so far:)
I love your video!. I am starting to let my gray hair grow out. I decided to use brunette and grey extensions. We'll see how it turns out. I'm waiting for the grey hair to come in.
I died my hair purple in 2016 or 17 till July 2020 after being called my hubbys mother 3 times in 6 months. My natural brunette hair was going grey at that time and was around the 20% ish point. It was the point where the greying makes us look old. Then, in Jamuary 2021, I was just done with dying, and my roots were showing closer to the 40% to 50% grey. That, to me, is the beautiful phase. I got some purple shampoo, which dulled the red in the purple dye and brought out the greys and whites. Also it dulled or blended the demarcation line enough to make is less shocking and more intentional. Now, one thing i had to consider is that I have waist length hair that hubby adored, thus limiting the greying options to only the grow out method. I'm now about to turn 54 in 18 days or so, and this next haircut will remove the last 3 inches of the purple, leaving my length mid back around bra strap long. My hair is now close to 60% grey and beautiful. I'm in love with jt because i now have highlights and lowlights in what to me was just boring brown. It might have taken 3.5 years to grow out, but it has been fun. One thing that was weird is that the texture changed. I now have some waves and curlishes when before greying, it was all line straight. The best advice i can tell others is to just take the plunge. My cousin, who is 10 years older than me, loved my hair and wishes she'd done it earlier with hers.
I did it cold turkey and kept reminding myself what a hassle it was having to color it. Calico was find and I LOVE my long silver/gray hair ! Wheee!! Subscribed.
Yay! That’s a good point. It’s so important to remember why you’re going gray to help you get through the long process of doing it. So glad you’re happy and thanks for subscribing!
Thank you for all of the great information. I feel I must go cold turkey now because I started having reactions to hair color. The positive attitude in your video is encouraging!
I’m really grateful for your extremely well researched and edited video. I’m just starting my journey at 39yrs old & really appreciate all your valuable information. Also, your hair looks beautiful. I’m inspired.
You’re welcome! I’m so happy to hear this ❤️! You’ll find a lot more on my website too if you are just starting your journey. Just go to the start here page at katiegoesplatinum.com. And thanks for the sweet compliments on my hair! I’m very happy with it and wish I’d done this sooner
I'm doing it the cheap, natural way, as the dyes really bother my scalp! have blond highlights, with medium golden brown dye for rest of head, except for the 4 months of grey I now have so it is quite the 'calico' cat look. Luckily, my hair is still thick at 67:) It will definitely be a process & hoping will have a good amount of grey to get cut into medium length style for class reunion next summer! Wish me luck!!
I am currently going grey. The journey began...cold turkey. I didn't like the grey/brunette line, so visited the salon for a dramatic colour removal and tone. I now am managing my colour using purple shampoos and conditioner. I will continue...cold Turkey for as long as possible. I tie my hair up in a ponytail. My hair grows slowly 🐌. I like your suggestions of bright coloured ends, I might give it a try.🎉
I am in the process of brunette color removal after 38 yrs of coloring my hair. First attempt left my hair (which is mostly white with gray) a light blond at the demarcation line and below. I’m going to have the rest lifted in a few days. I was wondering if your experience was the same and if it lifted all the color? My hairdresser didn’t exactly listen to my wanting the hair above and below the line to match and kept saying “blonde”. I have never been blonde and didn’t want that. She was impressed that it lifted 3-4 levels on the first go. I also wanted to know about your toner because the one she used made my white hair look lilac color which I hated.
I’m just glad going grey became a thing just as I was starting to see streaks. I did a few rounds of semipermanent color to ease into it. I recently gave that up am about 50% grey and completely natural. 53 years old and embracing my age.
I have been dying my grays since I was 24 🙄 so done with it! I’m a brunette with long hair 56. A year ago I started just depositing color, blue! No black just the blue! It looks like blue highlights Billy Eilish style 😆 It’s not really permanent so I plan on when it’s completely grown out just stop adding the blue 🤷🏻♀️ should eventually then wash out with regular shampooing 🤞
I tried the cold turkey let it just grow out during covid lockdown year…my gray hairs were so course and frizzy no matter what I used I ended up feeling old drab and depressed. I went back to dying it and I immediately felt 10 yrs younger. That was in 2021. Now Im sick of the hair dying expense and time and considering trying again. This video helped reinforce and give options. Thank you.
This is so informative and an excellent video, Katie! Btw you look great in hot pink. I love how you broke down each method and provided examples. Thanks for including my picture 😊
Hi Katie! I'm going to stopl my box blonde. Been using same color & brand for 10 yrs. I'm definitely not going to be able to grow it off slow due to my job. I'm praying for healthy long hair. Thanks for sharing this!
I am literally starting in Feb 2024. Going Salon method beginning with highlights to remove much of the color. I have very long hair and am not interested in waiting long periods. I do plan to cut some.
This is the best video I’ve seen. I got tired of the calico look, due to being allergic to dies. I finally cut off 2-3 inches off into a very short Pixie. I loved it 😊 - unfortunately going to a family reunion, the young people categorized me with my aunts and not my cousins. 😢
I’m so glad to hear you loved the video! That’s frustrating with what happened at your family reunion. I hope that attitudes change as more of us embrace our gray hair at all ages.
This video was great Katie! Well done!! My white streak was the most fun. I enjoyed rocking it for a while. It does require protecting that white hair from the dye also, that can be a little frustrating. Thanks for including me. 🌟 Shine on, friend! 🌟
Yours are the best videos I’ve found. Thank you! I’m heading home after being overseas for the summer and my beloved stylist isn’t available to start me on the journey. I’m having to dig deep and trust a stranger to start!!! Signed, Dyed Brunette Seeking Faith 🎀

I really love the silver/white color. I have never thought of gray hair as being a bad thing. I’m a natural strawberry blonde, but I’ve had it several different colors depending on the photo shoot and company. Since I’m in a business where my hair is professionally colored, I will probably let my hair grow out gray or have it stripped and colored gray. I That’s usually harsh on your hair, but my hair is just above my bum and I really don’t want to cut it because I really like being able to braid my hair or pulling it up in a pony tail. Low maintenance is definitely important. Good luck and Happy Gray!
If you are on the fence about going grey, I highly recommend starting with a grey/silver wig. I bought one (under $100), a few months before I decided it was time. Most of the time I wore it at home, and I got used to how I would look, what makeup adjustments to make, etc. I went the full silver with lowlights salon method, my new silver growth blended perfectly. Finding the right colorist is a must, as mentioned in the video. Also, make sure they use Olaplex with the bleach products if you go this route. I first went for a cut and color consult. I felt so comfortable on that appt., I scheduled the big one. I didn’t have to return for multiple color treatments, but I continued to go for occasional cuts.
I am going grey by only retouching the strip at the top of my head and around my face. I was originally a golden copper red when I first started going grey. This allows me to cling to the colour of my youth also the silver looks great peeping through.
Im sooooo ready to let go of the dye.I think Ill puchase the book and think about it a bit longer. Im platinum blonde now & at 57 Im so tired of dying it. I LOVE gray hair on women. They all lool so beautiful!💞❤💞
I transitioned via the highlight/lowlights/foil method. It was expensive, and there was a brief period-like maybe a couple of weeks between my first and second treatments-where things didn’t look that great. After my second treatment, however, I was delighted with how I looked and how easy the rest of the process went. I used a platinum toner for a while, and when I decided to drop the toning and just let the gray take over, I barely noticed a change. That said, I think the buzz cut or cold turkey methods are the best, but I knew I’d never be able to look at myself in the mirror for all the months it would take to reach my length h and color objectives..
I'm so glad the highlights/lowlights method worked well for you. My feeling is, whatever works for YOU, is the best way to go gray. For me , it was cold turkey - for my Mom, it was a salon transition - and for my sister, it was the dye strip technique. :-)
I have been coloring my hair for more than 30 years. Basically since college. My natural color is a dark ash and I have been dying it red. I have thought about going gray. My Mom had the most beautiful silver hair when she was older. I am reluctant right now to let my hair go natural b/c I don't have that much gray in my hair yet. So far it is just a little bit mixed in my hair. (I can see it when my roots get too long) When I do go gray I will probably have my hair colored a lighter tone of my natural dark ash blond or maybe do a fun quirky color.
As a longtime hairdresser this is a great video explaining all the options and downsides to those options. Thank you for helping educate people it helps my job become easier. I will be sharing this video with my silver ladies! Much Aloha 🌺🙏😎
Thank you so much! That's so nice to hear. I tried really hard to describe all the pros & cons of each method so I'm so glad you (with your expertise) enjoyed it! Thanks for sharing!
I originally started with the strip method, but it was tricky doing it myself so after one time,I just went cold turkey. I have wide white stripes on each side and had to color every 2 weeks. It was very empowering to just grow it out in front of the world.💪
Yes! Empowering is the perfect word for it. The night that I decided to go to gray cold turkey, I feel empowered, liberated, rebellious, and relieved -like a huge weight has been taken off my shoulders! ♥️
@@KatieGoesPlatinum Yes, rebellious! No longer buying in to the lie we are unattractive unless we cover our gray! Another gal in a different department at work did it at the same time, but went the salon route. She always smiled and nodded when she saw me lol. A few others where I work followed suit and said we were their inspiration. It was great!
I am cold turkey going from brunette that was dyed blonde, 10 months. It's mostly been easy but when my hair is needing washed the line is much more obvious. I've had two hairdressers offer to match my grey roots. No, sorry that's the last thing I want. I find it funny that most people don't get what I'm doing. I've only used ash blonde Shrine to help with brassiness. Thanks for the videos 🦋
I’m going cold turkey. I bought 3 different shades of grey wigs until my hair turns the color I like. The wigs are bobs & look nice. I can condition my hair wear wigs out. The wigs are breathable. I also have short wigs in grey as well as other colors for variety. I’m retired so this method works great for me. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Hello! Today is 9/30/24 and this video is great!! I’m 67 and am ready to go natural. Not to mention, I just found out my hair dresser passed away. Mercy, he was 57 years old. Anyway, I think I will be going cold turkey. I almost was there in 2020 since I couldn’t see my hairdresser, but I broke and foiled my own hair. I have shoulder length hair and want to keep it that way. My hair is also thinning and I wonder how that will be. Anyway, any helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I love your video!!
I'm so glad you enjoyed the video, but so sorry to hear about your hairdresser (so young)! I loved oging gray cold turkey and I hope you enjoy it, too. My website has a lot of information on how to go gray cold turkey but in the meantime, here's a free download that will get you started on your way to a gorgeous transition to naturally silver hair: www.katiegoesplatinumlead.com/10-easy-steps-landing-page
I went cold turkey and cut off 8 inches to shoulder length and I am just going to continue cut ends til color is out. I also started a fun wig journey and love trying different colors, lengths and styles. I am now thinking of buzzing my hair.
I went bold, I let my roots grow out and then I shaved my hair. It's more than liberating, I miss it even. My curl all came back and I am growing it out, bangs and all. I leave it super curly most days and just pull the bangs over with a Bobby pin, it's cute, fun and I get compliments all the time. I have several shades of gray/ silver in my hair and I love it!!!! No more hair dye, my hair is the healthiest it has ever been!!!!
I grew mine out naturally. Went from about 10" 's long to a long bob, which removed almost all the old dye. I was a dark brunette with about 90% gray/silver roots. My second cut (about 6 to 8 weeks later) removed the rest of the color. With using silver shampoo (amazon) and purple conditioner, I now have a light violet hue to my silver.
🤩Great tips!! I just stopped highlighting my hair I have very long hair it looks like platinum’s blond now I only use purple shampoo. I can’t believe it my hair looks silver without going through stages!! I think I had enough gray I just stopped highlighting and coloring but needed to use purple shampoo.
I am just at the beginning of embracing my gray after dyeing my hair for 40+ years. I've gone nearly a year without the dye and I love the look of the gray in the front but not so sure about the back. It seems darker gray, but still kind of pretty. I think the only thing I'm concerned about is that my hair seems thinner than when it was a light/med brunette. I notice my scalp more. Might be just me. Right now I'm doing the cold turkey but my daughter is getting married in about 6 months and I want to look my best. Definitely planning a trip to my hair dresser soon.
Hi, Kathy! If it makes you feel better, a lot of us experience what i call the "baldness" illusion when we first go gray - where we notice our scalp more. I think it's an optical illusion as it seems to go away once the last of the dye is cut off. Here's a product i just discovered that can help fix that issue - it blends your hair with your scalp. The white version is best if your roots are white, but they also have a salt & pepper version: shrsl.com/4m13m Congratulations on your daughter's upcoming wedding! A lot of women who are transitioning cold turkey but have a big event will use root spray, wigs, or gray toppers to disguise their roots. Hope that helps!
I bleached my previously short hair, then applied a gray color, and it looked great. Since then, I've let it grow out, and now I have white to silver natural hair. I'm happy not to dye it anymore. I use blue shampoo, conditioner/mask, and a product against yellowing. I'm growing it out and aiming for a bob haircut.
I did the salon method. I'm not sure what they did. I think they stripped the color out and then toned it. Took about 3 hours and cost about $300 (this was back in 2015. probably more now.) I walked into the salon a brunette and walked out with grey hair. I was very happy with this method because I knew I didn't have the patience to wait 2 years for it all to grow out. My hair wasn't damaged at all by this process, and I'm really happy with my choice.
I’m watching to find a method. I had to have a buzz cut. It took 6 years to grow my hair back out long. My mother was upset that her daughter had grey hair when she still has very little and paid for me to have my color done. Having a buzz and pixie and growing it out is not something I want to do again, so the dye strip sounds the best if I can do it.
Hey Lady, Cold Turkey all the way for me. I'm kinda of an all-or-nothing type. And that's the same way I gave up cigarettes. A little, or some doesn't work for me. All the methods you explained and displayed here are cool though. I didn't know there were so many options. Sharing this w/my Sister as she’s pondering the dye-ditch. Ty this is very interesting and helpful, to say the least.👍🏾😉💙
I did the just stop dying my hair method..lol. It was hard. I'm a natural redhead but everyone loved how it looked. My hair was almost to my waste but one day I had it cut up ti my shoulders. It's now the calico look but I like it.
Wonderful! Have you taken many photos of your transition? If you have and are willing to share them on my blog (with your story), I'd love it! I haven't had much luck getting interviews with natural redheads going gray and I have readers who would be interested. (No pressure, of course)
I’ve stopped dying my hair and have an inch of regrowth, basically because I have found little white wings which I like but I’m hoping my hair grows out grey and not just mousey. It’s pretty short so not too bothered about the skunk stripe.
I cannot do the buzz or pixie cut, as i have long hair, and dont like short hair for me. Im going cold turkey, but have light blonde hair, so its actually looking not too bad.
Hi! Yes - it’s a LOT healthier: Thicker, smoother, shinier, and a lot less frizz. And re: colors - i went back to wearing the cool colors i used to wear with my natural dark hair. It turned out the colors i wore with dyed hair were too warm.
I went fully gray, then decided to dye my hair using all-natural henna. I've been doing that for about a year. I've now decided that I'm going to try to remove as much of the henna as I can, then I will use demi-permanent hair color, until it grows out.
im 30 yo Woman hair dye and trends obsessed ..thinking bout stop to dye my hair longe time ago..but its really hard for me then i just dye it again ...i dont have lot grey hair i think cause it wasnt cleary visible to me because im always dying it for so long ... but my eyebrows turn soo light in a week i have to dye them weekly once or twice ... its not healthy so iwant to stop with that too ....its really hard or me 😂😂😂 my 18 yo sister has already grey hair she herself thought bout letting it grow out grey it will be so pretty *-* thanks for your video it was rly helpful with alll the methods and you look stunning ❤❤❤
I quit dyeing my hair about 5 months ago. Since menopause my hair has become extremely fine and thin, so I was already wearing hats and wigs. I'm just starting to enjoy my Cruella white streaked hair and seeing what my hair really looks like.
It’s fun isn’t it? I hope that you have the same result I did - my hair loss stopped in and my hair grew thicker. It’s thicker now than it has been in 30 years!
I'm blonde, and 50, and It took 2 years to grow out the bleached, previously dyed section. In the mean time I searched for a dye to colour the ends with to match my roots, to varying degrees of success. In the end, the ends were bleached bright blonde, and my regrowth was dirty blonde with grey streaks, and I impatiently cut off the last two chunks giving myself a choppy shag type of haircut where every strand was a foot long from scalp to end. It felt good. But I didn't like my colour, so I bought an ash blonde, but I didn't like that either so I bought a medium silver and that didn't work...
My hair is normally auburn but I started dyeing it bright red in my late 20's. Am 63 now and the bright red look was getting a bit old tbh. My hair is quite long, takes ages to grow so I didn't want to cut it off so I used a colour lifter. I knew it might make things worse and I ummed and arred over it for days but it worked for me. I now have my normal copper back with greys in it. I changed my hair parting and got a huge surprise as that side of my head is grey but the other isn't yet. Am now wearing it that way as I like it. Now am back to normal colour I'll just go cold turkey. No more dye.
I’m so glad that worked out for you! What color lifter did you use? I’ve heard so many bad things and seen so many bad results in my Facebook group - so I really love it that this worked out well for you!
That’s so true - you can check out my Gray Friendly Salon Directory but not all of them do professional salon transitions (call to check): directory.katiegoesplatinum.com
Katie, I have been going cold turkey for 10 months and decided that the brown demarcation line had to go. I decided to go to the salon and do a color lift. It has lifted 3 shades but I’m going again for the final lift of the rest of the residual yellow that the lift leaves. I wish I knew what this would do to my hair. I feel like the stylist didn’t prepare me for the result which was a pale yellow. Believe me, I didn’t want yellow hair. The toner didn’t work the first go and left my beautiful white/slightly silver hair a shade of lilac. I’m hoping like heck that my next color lift will work and I didn’t spend the money on “you may just have to let it grow” speech. Moral of the story here is if you want to do a color lift, ask lots of questions and do your research on not only the process but also the products!
Hi, I'm so sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, a lot of women have this experience (especially if they have darker hair). I hope the rest of your transition goes well.
@@KatieGoesPlatinum thank you but it didn’t. I feel like the stylist kinda promised me the moon just to get me back in her chair. I am still left with yellow and streaks of orangey yellow which makes me cry when I look in the mirror. Research research research before you go to the salon! Understand that if you are lifting your hair you will most likely be left with a shade of yellow and if you can’t live with that, then there should be a plan B. The toner she used didn’t even touch the yellow color and am now researching what product to put in my hair to tone it down. If you have any suggestions I’d appreciate it! And to add insult to injury, she overcharged me and acted like I was insulting her for questioning her math. Ugh. I won’t be going back there again.
I stripped out my dyed color and used a demipermanent purple color. I kept it purple until my hair grew out enough that I could have it cut and then allowed the purple to fade.
I did the cold turkey method 2 years into now. I thought I would have a hard time with it but to my surprise I didn't. I say one more year and it'll be all salt and pepper without having to cut it shorter than I'm willing to go. It was waist length this past week had it cut to bra length.

I’m 7 months in and so
sick of the tri-color. I also don’t look good in short hair.
@@JennyOSunshine I'm so sorry. How are you doing now? (I just saw this)
You grew it out
I'm finally fully grown out. I left it long, so. 3 years to grow it out. Now I'm about 3 inches below my collar bone....all natural and I love it ..thanks…
You’re welcome! I’m so glad that you’re happy with your hair ♥️❤️
I stripped my colored hair at home and dyed it lightest blonde. I cut my hair as short as I could stand it, just touching my shoulder. My hair is light grey with salt and pepper low lights. The lightest blonde mixed in with the grey very well during the year it took to grow out.
sounds lovely!
This sounds like a good plan toe!💞
Im light blonde and am thinking of getting gray highlights
@@linda2073 Gray is the new Blonde.😉
That is such a sad but true statement!
Male bias since beginning of time.
It's up to women to teach their children that aging women are beautiful, valuable, and powerful.
Let myself go? I got up and went years ago!😂
I did have any demarcation because it was a demi color
A friend of mine went to hairdresser and did a few gray highlights to blend with some of her grays. The result was stunning! Then she used purple shampoo and mask 3 times a month. She uses coconut oil every weekend to keep it soft.
I’m glad your friend had a good experience with highlights (not everybody does)! Re: coconut oil, here’s a great article you might want to share with her (gives some tips on how to safely use coconut oil on gray hair): quicksilverhair.com/reconsider-using-coconut-oil-on-your-hair/
Thank you for sharing
I think I might try this. Thank you.
That’s good to know, I started Biotin supplements today as I have read that helps with hair shedding and nail strength. So 🤞😊.
I went gray and yesterday did the big chop. I love it! My hair is salt and pepper. I feel free today.
Wonderful! Congratulations!
@@sabrinamerrick1271 thanks, I’m def going shorter soon.
@ I’m finally there and LOVING IT! I’d post a photo if I could
I quit coloring my hair with henna about four years ago, because while my hair was about 20% gray, the roots were showing so fast that I couldn’t keep up with them.
That’s great! You’ll have such a better transition if you don’t get bothered by outside opinions.
Sounds like a great solution!
I used semi permanent occasionally then let it wash out until permanent dye was cut off
I totally buzzed my head. My husband was not to thrilled because this is the third time ive done this. Lol. Ive finally made up my mind to stay white, I believe. Im in the ugly grow out stage, but im wanting to have longer hair. Wish me luck.
Impossible that it's ugly; I bet it looks amazing and dramatic!
Thank You!😊
I think you were brave. How's it going? After watching Katie's video I'm thinking to do a buzz cut too.
I went the cold turkey route. I got more compliments seeing my gray coming through. It took a few years but I wouldn't go back for anything. I just got tired of dying my hair. Thank you for putting this together. Nana in Peeples Valley Arizona
You’re welcome! So glad you liked it :-)
I’m using the grey blending method with silver highlights & monthly toner. I was also using semipermanent color for the last year before I made the decision to embrace my silver. I’m so lucky to have an amazing stylist who is totally onboard with my transition! Love your blog & RUclips!
Thank you! I'm so glad you have a supportive stylist - it makes such a difference!
Can you give me tips to achieve this at home? I wanna do this for my mom
You're welcome! I'm so glad it helped you!
This was so great to read, Leah! I’m so happy that I helped you on your journey. ❤️❤️
i went cold turkey and sported the skunk look lol im 6 months in and glad i stuck with it 😀wearing hats is always a good option too
Thanks for this video! I am going to try to have more positive about the transition! i am almost 70 and have been coloring my hair for many years! it has been a relief but doing it the transitional way.
I'm so glad you are feeling more positive - going gray is surprisingly fun!
I am 58 and 6 weeks in going cold turkey. Thanks for the inspiration to go for it. I have watched several of your videos and am posting a short one myself (more or less to be accountable for my decision) and maybe encourage someone else. 😬👍
That is awesome! I'm so glad you will be out there encouraging other women - it really helps!
Whoever calls you stupid is someone going gray that’s not ready to face the facts. I’m 35 and am seeing the firsts grays in my dyed red hair and I appreciate the work you put in to bring this info to me ❤️
Thanks! I’m so glad you enjoyed it! ❤️
I’m 76 y/o and starting to go gray. I’m trying to decide if I should go fully gray at the salon or just let it grow out. Right now I only have 2 small gray sections on my dark hair and I don’t like salt and pepper! …need to make a decision. Thank you for this video. 🤗
You're welcome!
Dark brunette and went cold turkey. Had Calico and skunk. Felt it made me look terrible. But I put so much time into it that I decided to ride it out. Glad that's over!
I am currently 10 months in and HATE the brassy calico look. I love the idea of dying my ends dark! I am making an appointment after this video
I'm so happy you liked that tip! I definitely would've done that myself if it had occurred to me at the time. Love the look!
That sounds like a great way to go gray! I’m so glad it worked out well for you. And thanks ❤️
Thanks for the tip!
I’m so glad you didn’t put up with that. Geez, I hate that people feel free to comment on our appearance and our choices - ugh!
O
I'm so glad to hear that worked well for you! I'm glad you liked the video, too 🙂
This video was so helpful!
I'm so glad to hear this. Thanks for letting me know, Kristin! It's fun to be gray!
That's a great way to go gray!
I'm so happy it worked out so well for you! Your hair sounds gorgeous.
I did it cold turkey and kept reminding myself what a hassle it was having to color it. Calico was find and I LOVE my long silver/gray hair ! Wheee!!

Best of luck to you! I'm sure you'll love the results!
If you do, let me know how it goes! Sounds like fun
It looks like blue highlights Billy Eilish style 😆
It’s not really permanent so I plan on when it’s completely grown out just stop adding the blue 🤷🏻♀️ should eventually then wash out with regular shampooing 🤞
How cool! What are you using to get the blue?
Mine has finally grown out and it was so over processed that my hair was falling out.. now I have new hair.. it’s so cool. I kept mine pulled back😊
Wonderful!
Excellent! Now quit pulling it back. It stresses and causes hair loss also.
Thank you.
I’m so glad. I hope you have a better experience this time around. ❤️
This is so informative and an excellent video, Katie! Btw you look great in hot pink. I love how you broke down each method and provided examples. Thanks for including my picture 😊
Thanks, Carmen! I’m so glad you liked it ❤️. I smiled the whole time I was editing it! Thank YOU for the great photo!
Hi Katie! I'm going to stopl my box blonde. Been using same color & brand for 10 yrs. I'm definitely not going to be able to grow it off slow due to my job. I'm praying for healthy long hair. Thanks for sharing this!
you're welcome! Best of luck wtih your transition to gray!
Thanks, Joli! I love the streak look -wish I’d tried it too ❤️

That sounds like a great plan!
Im sooooo ready to let go of the dye.I think Ill puchase the book and think about it a bit longer. Im platinum blonde now & at 57 Im so tired of dying it. I LOVE gray hair on women. They all lool so beautiful!💞❤💞
I think you’re right to wait until you’re completely ready - that will make the whole process so much easier and more fun! ♥️
@@KatieGoesPlatinum
Yes, rebellious!
You’re welcome! And thanks for sharing - so glad the Shrine is working for you!
That sounds like a great plan!
Sounds like you’re having fun with your transition - that’s awesome!
I have colored my hair x 30 yrs. I am brunette-so skunk stripe is a concern. Will probably do pixie using toot cover up til right length.
If the skunk stripe is a concern, here are some other methods, too - hope this helps! ruclips.net/video/xwQ7cNPVQ-8/видео.htmlsi=KEGll2gqXT-R9mkV
That's great to hear! Your hair sounds awesome!
@@KatieGoesPlatinum thank you, I am enjoying the journey
I grew mine out naturally. Went from about 10" 's long to a long bob, which removed almost all the old dye. I was a dark brunette with about 90% gray/silver roots. My second cut (about 6 to 8 weeks later) removed the rest of the color. With using silver shampoo (amazon) and purple conditioner, I now have a light violet hue to my silver.
Sounds super pretty!
I’m so glad you’re enjoying your natural hair!
The white version is best if your roots are white, but they also have a salt & pepper version: shrsl.com/4m13m
Congratulations on your daughter's upcoming wedding!
Thanks for sharing!! Sounds wonderful ❤️
What product do you use to prevent yellowing?
I did the salon method. I'm not sure what they did. I think they stripped the color out and then toned it. Took about 3 hours and cost about $300 (this was back in 2015. probably more now.) I walked into the salon a brunette and walked out with grey hair. I was very happy with this method because I knew I didn't have the patience to wait 2 years for it all to grow out. My hair wasn't damaged at all by this process, and I'm really happy with my choice.
I'm so glad it worked out well for you! Sounds like you found an experienced stylist, which is so important!
The dye strip is a great method ♥️ - it helps you avoid so many transition issues.
We sound similar - all or nothing is how i am, too! I love that description. I’m so glad you liked the video - hope it helps your sister! ♥️
All or NOTHING.
Either you Love me or you Hate me. There is no in- between . ✌️♥️
I had the highlights and lowlights added and the transition was seamless and my hair turned out beautiful.
I'm so glad you had a great experience!
I’ve stopped dying my hair and have an inch of regrowth, basically because I have found little white wings which I like but I’m hoping my hair grows out grey and not just mousey. It’s pretty short so not too bothered about the skunk stripe.
That’s nice - if it’s short, you should have a pretty easy transition!
I cannot do the buzz or pixie cut, as i have long hair, and dont like short hair for me. Im going cold turkey, but have light blonde hair, so its actually looking not too bad.
Blondes definitely have an easier time going gray cold turkey, for sure!
Hi Katie! Does your gray hair feel healthier than when it was dyed? Also, did you start wearing different colors when you transitioned to gray?
Hi! Yes - it’s a LOT healthier: Thicker, smoother, shinier, and a lot less frizz. And re: colors - i went back to wearing the cool colors i used to wear with my natural dark hair. It turned out the colors i wore with dyed hair were too warm.
Thank you Katie! You're hair looks so pretty....you've inspired me to stop dying mine and embrace my gray!
I’m so glad to hear that!
I’m so glad you found the video helpful ♥️. Thanks!
Great share Katie! Thank you for the mention! I love helping people transition into their natural grey hair 🌬️🤍
You’re welcome! And thank YOU!
Thank you for your great advice!! 💐
you're welcome!
I love grey ombres. I am 41 and I am already going grey.
I have very dark, almost black hair. I do lowlights at the salon --- it is working great for me.
I'm so glad that's working so well for you!
So fun and informative!!
Thanks! I’m so glad you liked it ❤️❤️
I am getting grey blending done at the salon next and I cannot wait! I am done dying my roots!
I hope you have a wonderful experience!
That is what I did, and I like it. I am going to blend it one r
More time and then just let it grow natural 😊😊😊
I'm 4 months in cold turkey and am loving the process.
Wonderful! I loved going cold turkey too!
I have watched a lot of grey blending videos but it’s hard to find someone that knows what they doing.
That’s so true - you can check out my Gray Friendly Salon Directory but not all of them do professional salon transitions (call to check): directory.katiegoesplatinum.com
Beautiful! Im actually excited to get grey hair when i get older, its soo gorgeous!
That’s so refreshing to hear! I’m Gen X and didn’t grow up seeing examples of lovely gray hair. I’m happy to help change perceptions!
I loved the cold turkey method, too. So glad you’ve had a good experience!
re-dye only the roots on top and/or moneypiece would be an option for me. Greetings from Vienna/Austria🎉
Those are both great options! Greetings to you from Los Angeles, USA 🇺🇸! I’ve always wanted to visit Vienna ♥️
I'm watching this as I'm dyeing my roots yet again. I have to do it every 3 weeks and that's pushing it. Can't stand it anymore!
I think I like the last option and will look into that more!
Wonderful! So glad it helped ❤️
For a change one year, I blonde highlighted my grown out gray. I liked it but did not stay the coarse. Thinking about it again.
Brilliant video, thank you so much for explaining all these ideas.
You’re welcome!
Thinking about cutting into a short bob, let the sliver begin🎉🎉🎉
Wonderful! I hope you have a blast!
