One thing I've found that gets me around my local newspaper's pay wall (which looks a lot like the KC Star's page) is to set my VPN to a foreign location (like Hong Kong). They don't seem to mind if foreigners read the paper for free.
😂👍
Actually Hong Kong may be special as it's the freest "part of China" (even though I still see it somewhat independent per five-decade agreement since '97). Maybe you're 'exploiting' some goodwill there.
Or it could just be they assume Hong Kongers don't understand English somehow.
@@whohan779 I just tried it with the VPN set to London and it still worked.
@@Zundfolge Weird. Seems like the reverse of what I'm experiencing due to GDPR, but I'm also on very cheaply acquired NordVPN which doesn't have many locations, but those it does.
Yeah. Those same pubs (mostly) allow you to get in the 'back door' by entering the article title into Google.
I love the pay walls where you can click inspect on the elements blocking your view, delete them from the page HTML, and continue reading what was behind the element uninhibited.
I've had mixed success with that, and it gobbles a lot of resources to do it.
@@stephensaines7100 g... goebbels.. Joseph.... goebbels?!!!!
What they do now is only show you 1/10th of the article and not load in the rest, and put a paywall sticker.
Also news articles put behind paywalls put at risk the ability to investigate the source and if the article is geniuine.
@@dra6o0n adblockers, removing pay Walls. How do you think will they be able to work in future? Are they supposed to work for free, from underneath a bridge? Why is everyone allowed to make a living, but Websites get their income taken away and its totally accepted? I had a Website running with several thousand users daily. I developed several calculators. When I realised that over 85% had adblockers and I made arround 80.- minus 30.- for the Server monthly and 30.- Domain costs per year (48.- profit per month). Wo 48.- for 50'000 people using my tools? Bye bye. They can look for another idi*t that develops free stuf.
I learned alot and always worked fulltime as developer making a very good salary. Now my hourly pay is 200 Euros. Of course I only get a fraction of that, but 1.2h of work now equals to about a month income for providing 50k people service.
And I didnt placce hundreds of ads on the page. One on the right side and one between the calculators. Not inside the calculator on the "calculate" Button, nor these annoying anchor ads thst move with the scrolling.
If I run into a paywall when I follow a link from Google, I use an extension called uBlacklist. I click on the link in Google, and from then on, Google doesn't show me links with that paywall. Better than getting partway into an article only to be blocked...
You are my go-to guy for quailty technical content Chris. Another well delivered video.
I'm 61 years old, can't work due to disability and funds are tight. I'm upgrading from an ancient 32 bit Dell GX520
(with LMDE 5 installed with your help) to a 64 bit Dell 3620 WS to at least have something more modern and your videos are the best for helping me learn and keep up with so much computer related tech. You taking the time to explain and to show the steps and procedures necessary to become more proficient in all things computer related is truly helpful. Thank you so much for sharing your expertise and knowledge.
ok
I miss the olden days when you could view contents without being asked to accept cookies, without hitting paywalls, without endless ads popping up... I get that people want to be paid for their content, but... it seems to me they've gone too far in that direction...
You’re right. Can’t take a dump without using money. 😂 adds and payments everywhere
Capitalism
uBlock helps with a lot of this.
As a person with a disability who's on a limited income, I appreciate these suggestions.
In case you don't want to install an Add-on: The easiest way to bypass cookie-based paywalls is to just block cookies from the website you want to look at. Every big browser can do that. Note: Sometimes you need to delete all cookies off the site after you started blocking them. This is only necessary onse.
Best video I've seen all day. You're pretty much my go to tech guy, Chris. Some incredible information again, with great presentation as usual. Keep it up!
Every other channel: Try to avoid browser add-ons when possible.
Chris: Got any problem whatsoever? There's probably an add-on that can fix that.
😂
I have a better solution that takes no time at all... Realizing that absolutely NONE of these paywall sites really have any "news" that you want to read so badly, you are willing to allow them to inconvenience you. The best revenge is for them to know they have caused you to completely lose interest.
What’s annoying is that I still pay for subs to certain agencies (WaPo, NYT and The Mercury in San Jose) and The Mercury was *so bad* even after paying, I just cancelled. Their site was still super unusable, especially on iPad. Even sometimes NYT/WaPo have annoying banners that overlay the content when you’ve paid. 🙄 Stuff like this is still useful in these situations (especially uBlock when you can pick/elide certain annoying elements).
Thanks for posting this, Patrick. Democracy dies in darkness and if journalist can't earn a living, I worry what will come of the pursuit of truth.

Thank you chris for all your contributions to the community. You make the web a safer place to dive on.
Back in the day I've used to do this manually. When I've opened a page or article that had a paywall pop-up, immediately after loading the page I pressed the "X" to stop loading the page and it stopped the popup.
i love that the remove paywall extension has dutch news sites/newspapers
Good luck getting it to work. Does not work.
this is something i usually achieved with pressing F11 when they put a popup over things, since i have "no money", a paywall is just a waste of bandwidth on their part.
i don't use an ad blocker, i just have "noscript" and a list of "blacklisted sites" and keep the browser on "do not track" so normal sites can have ads but sources that are not trusted and the external sites they communicate to are blocked. (seeing an ad from a trusted source is fine but random ones are to be assumed virus laced.)
Well, it's nice to see you try this on the exact local paper I planned to use it on lol. KC gang rise up??
I love the clickbait removal SO much. I really hope there's more stuff out there like this, that tones down the psychological warfare for my attention span online. I've been looking for stuff to make the whole web browsing experience more....normal, or something like that, but it's hard to pin down what I'm even looking for and much harder finding it. Great vid!
Most of time, mainly in the smartphone but also on pc, I just use the read mode... it works most of cases. Only problem when the pictures or videos don't load.
And, there are a lot of Brazilian online newspapers too... I liked =D
Nice tip.
Thank you Chris !!! Outstanding extensions to add to my browsing experience!
I consider Paywalls to be an indication that a site isn't worth reading.
That's a great videop Chris, thanks for that! What it could be also helpful is something related to how to keep your browser fresh when you search for fly tickets. This could help a lot!
Good tip
I love this channel for these random things. I normally just inspect element to bypass paywalls or disable scripts etc but it breaks alot of things. This will help out a ton
Hey Chris,
8 hours and your video is still up. You fooled the algorithm. Maybe…LOL. Nice video. Take care and MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!! It’s the season despite the commercialism.
you always help to make my life better and better on the internet, it started from the debloat windows video and now you are here making my internet experience better as well, thank you so much
I have two browsers in two VMs. #1 has everything locked down (including everything off by default in noscript) and I allow extra permissions on selected websites. #2 has everything wide open, I block permissions on selected websites, and everything is cleared with bleachbit when I am done. #1 is for the sites I use all the time. #2 is used when searching for info or looking at anything that might trigger ads ("I see you just purchased a new lawn mower. Here are 10,000 lawn mower ads." "I see you are getting thousands of lawn mover ads. Here are 100,000 ads for other lawn care products.") Works great.
I do similar, not least because some extensions work far better on, say, FF, and others not so well on, say, Chrome. I still run the basics on Chrome, (Ad Blocker, etc) but run the more nefarious ones on FF. URLs and more can be shuttled back and forth between the two open browsers.
I love your video's man, keep it up! Very instructive
Another thing that can work is to use the Brave browser and in Settings, under Shields, turn on Block Scripts. Then when your regular browser runs into a paywall, copy the URL into Brave and read on. Doesn't work with everything but can get by a number of paywalls.
Nice one Chris, I've used so much of your contents tip and tricks that my windows 10 is now fully customized bloat free so much better in performance and responsiveness.😁
I like the JustRead extension. It eliminates overlays, page styling, ads, popups, and comments, allowing users to focus solely on the content.
Rofl, the fun you have breaking their code is contagious 😁🤣
I use Ublock filters to remove clickbait from youtube. I made my own custom filter
It works in Firefox, even for the NY Times! Hope this video is not taken down...useful advice.
perfect ! Since Adblocker etc is just not working anymore .....
I'm glad this video checks the one website I'd actually use the paywall bypass most often on lol
EFF Privacy Badger is one of my essentials
I've been using the Firefox version of that plugin for years. Would highly recommend. 10/10
Yes we need something like this, I usually stay away from such "gotta join the club" websites.
Evil laughter! Thanks Chris.
Awesome, got it to work on Android, both bypass and clickbait remover 👍
I use "Reader View" especially to copy and paste to sent to others. It's not 'naughty' like the better known extensions you feature, but once you're in the pilot's seat, unfettered, you often come across some great articles, but some, like one famous 'pink' business daily of exceptional quality, render without format, and it becomes almost illegible. "Reader View'" cleans that all up, and makes it look like a report, w/o anything else (even some pics, which can be copy and pasted back in if need be) to send off to others.
Brillant video, Chris. Works brillantly too, Can you do a video on RUclips improver - maybe upload it to your website? Been loving it, amazing YT tool.
That laughter at 4:41 :'D
Facebook blocks me otherwise it work on most online newspapers. Thanks a bunch Chris until it doesn't work. Strangely enough it only worked the first time.
Facebook is wortless, delete it.
@@Bullminator Thanks
Thanks Chris - A must have extension for avid readers. Using Brave.
Brave promises a lot, but only delivers a part of what's promised, and then does nefarious things with your ID.
uBlock Origin element picker blocks the paywall for Scranton Times paper.
I would like a remove all shorts in youtube.
The bypass-paywalls-clean addon is very useful here in Germany, because their paywalls are not cookie-based and/or metered, but script based. So the mentioned add-on works here for me better than the in the video mentioned methods.
Are you using this on a Windows machine? Or some Linux? Because I can't figure out how to get this to work on my Windows 11 machine with Brave browser. How sad
@@elcolin_ I use Windows and Linux and FYI I use the Firefox web browser.
I love this video Chris. Nice work 👍👍👍😅
A legal workaround for this would be to ask your employer to pay for that subscription if that content is relevant for your job (or just to have something to read at all), then silently have that account shared to all employees. It's no different than having a newspaper in a coffee break room.
Thanks for letting us know of this extension.
Sometimes blocking the specific elements doesn't work on all sites, it only loads part of the content so I cant see much more even with the paywall removed. Disabling javascript or using reader mode usually works the best for me
You have also an extension called "Behind the Overlay"
I've been using HTML viewers to bypass paywalls for years. Some sites don't work so I cut the javascript out from the html and the article is visible. Getting extensions could be a security concern and it makes it easy for them to track you. Also some sites can detect these extensions and therefore are capable of making you disable these extensions. Either way most of these sites have nothing but a bunch of propaganda and the sites that I like usually give free content so I normally avoid the trouble of getting these extensions. To each their own however.
If you go to brave's settings, then go to "privacy and security" and then go to cookies, there you can choose to clear all cookies and site data after closing all tabs. If you use brave, there is no need for a "self distruct cookies" add on
Most browsers can be set to remove all cookies but that clears all cookies which includes sites like banks and other sites you don't want to have to relog into every time.. My answer is to have to use one browser for my critical sites like banking and such while having another browser for general browsing that I simply flush out every time it's closed.
@@kstaxman2 If you use a browser like Brave, you can create multiple "profiles" for stuff like banking. Having multiple "profiles" is basically just creating a second instance of your browser you can switch to without having to use a different browser altogether
Usually I skip these webpages, and when I really want to read it I just disable java script, and once the page has loaded, I enable it again.
another must-have extension thank you, Chris
You can only bypass websites that actually "kind of" allow it to do. Most paywalls dont even load the content without being logged in. So there is nothing to bypass. And the interent was free back then, because the content wasnt even that good nor really available. And the internet was always ridden with advertisement.
This is big brain AF. I love this! Shout out from KC!
byppassing paywalls? WIN! I'm from the Boston area and there are times when I see articles on the Boston Globe that I want to read. And it irritates me that their site would block me from reading it behind a friggin' paywall. Now to sync this across to my phone so I can use it there too.
It really works! Thank you. Excellent tool.
Also recommend: 12ft ladder, it will serve a Google cached article without a paywall for some websites.
Thanks for the tip! I rarely go to any of these news sites anymore because of these paywalls.
Bypass paywalls is a lot easier to install in Firefox. You don't have to enable developer mode and or download a zip file.
@Chris Titus Tech Thanks a Bunch!!! You're the "Bro's Bro" of Computer Gurus!!!
Forget All the Variables and make it CLEAR & CONCISE
"Bypass Paywalls Clean" is a must have on Firefox.
The evil launch got me cracking 😂😂
A Kansas native nice. We love Kansas
Hey Chris, thank you so much for sharing "Bypass paywalls" video. With your help, I am able to view and read HBR (Harvard Business Review) articles in my laptop! I appreciate the time you've taken to prepare this video. And guess what? You've earned yourself a like and subscription!
To everyone else: I'm excited to know whether this video helped you, and what publications (and why) do you read from. Thanks!
Now we are talking !
Pretty cool, did not work on a local news site, added the site to options, now it is working. Nice.
Yup, that's why I use an adblocker on RUclips. Watching 2 minuts of content, then 1 minut of ads, 2 minuts of content, and so on. That's just not for me.
why isn't this working on my brave browser following your instructions :(
I use bypass paywalls clean, which is a fork of the bypass paywalls extension mentioned in the video.
I use Enhancer for RUclips (Firefox of course), it is great! Use it! I don't even bother with paywalls/login-walls, there are plenty of websites which you can find the information on without such a wall and it is a nice filter to know which websites to avoid. I try to stay away from mainstream media anyway. :)
A must-use add-on is NoScript (Firefox, less good on Chromium), SponsorBlock is a great addon (sometimes a little bit buggy) and of course you should use that one add-on which I can't even mention in this comment for an obvious reason because the big G dislikes it so much.
What does noscript do if you don't mind?
@@fifin119 It lets you pick and choose what JavaScript code is allowed to run on a webpage IIRC.
@@fifin119 Filters out JavaScript - you have to be careful though as 90%+ of websites use it so you can run into issues blocking it too aggressively...
@@Journoid thanks
@@fifin119 Just FYI, uBlock Origin can do that and more if you want it to.
Thanks! It worked I am now able to access the billboard charts without paying for Billboard Pro crap.
I'll, try to find an alternative website when faced with a paywall. Might as well deny them my time.
The simple tab groups add on paired with the container tab groups add on is so useful, it is the reason I use Firefox.
If you’re more technically minded, for ad-blocking, look at pi-hole. Helps on mobile devices as well, including ads in apps. Like all blockers, doesn’t catch them all, but the fact it works network-wide is a huge plus.
Yes, but it doesn't bypass paywalls.
Another tip in this category:
On a mobile phone without adblocker?
Disconnect from the internet as soon as the content of the page is loaded. Ads won't load, neither will they take up space.
Sadly the bypass paywall works for almost zero Norwegian sites, they seemed to have buffed their paywall system so this plugin won't work or flat out block you from their site.
your camera work looks great and i like the new lighting.
Didn't you forget to disable the developer mode afterwards? Thank you
Still works! Awesome. And for Firefox, it's as easy as downloading the extension.
Love this video is basically a giant middle finger to paywalls.
wow really nice, awesome vid, thankyou!
i don't think i have ever seen anyone use chrome and a linux distro at the same time before
chrome and linux user just seem mutually exclusive 💀
Brilliant video, thanks for this information.
Hi Chris, informative video. Bypassing the German newspaper Zeit does work but unfortunately not the second one on the list of the addon. By the way. What OS are you using in that video? Looks nice.
Dang...Looks like Github took it down (blocked access) - Repository unavailable due to DMCA takedown.
This repository is currently disabled due to a DMCA takedown notice. We have disabled public access to the repository. The notice has been publicly posted.
yeah me too
Another extension I like is Consent-o-matic, which automatically fills in all those pop-up cookie forms to reject all cookie tracking.
It's not a perfect solution, because lots of those forms won't let you uncheck the ones it deems "essential". In reality, you can browse just fine without cookies, which you can verify by disabling them in your browser. I want an addon that can blanket block all cookies on a per site basis.
using the brave browser for everyday surfing with no addons and some security changes is another option. and if you value privacy away from google
glad you understand that normal people (people that dont live in tech) dont use rss.
Loving the clickbait removal extension.
For most news papers all I do is click reader mode (firefox) and boom the full article with all the junk removed.
Santa beard is coming along nicely 😁
Hi, thanks for the suggestion. Do you have any recommendations of how to do something like this using either an advanced firewall or proxy server? That way for devices that wouldn't support this method you could still benefit the add blocking. Would be awesome if pi-hole would add this functionally.
the thing with paywalls is, if they REALLY wanted to be paid. They should use a login server like every NORMAL paid-for service does! If you bypass a paywall ad, its on them.
This is cool man, thanks for sharing
Although, I haven't tried - this is a very unique method. Will try soon, Thank you
Chris, why Chrome? Firefox much better, get it
Exactly what I was thinking.
