I remember hearing Oscar Peterson when I was maybe 10 or 11 and just being amazed. I used to stop and play and rewind a million times to figure out what the hell he was doing! I probably spent days locked in my bedroom haha only coming out for chips and cookies and soda.
Apart from the breathtaking performance in general, three things stand out: his recognisable classical training (including tedious scale exercises), his wonderful phrasing (in melody and harmony), and his sound on this marvellous Bösendorfer grand piano. Bless you, O.P. (thank you for sharing).
Apart from the breathtaking performance in general, three things stand out: Martin Drew at drums - Niels Pedersen at the bass - last but first Oscar Peterson at the piano!
If I had a music background, I know I would agree with everything you said. I also would like to say the same about Neils Pedersen. Fingers of both his hands fly around the stand-up bass.
I love, and have always loved Oscar, a wonderful musician and such a graceful human being. Beautiful, along with Niels, a genius brother for Oscar P. Hearts of gold!💛
The first CD we had at home when we bought a CD player in 1990ish was Tristeza, by Oscar Peterson. l was about 9 years old and had no idea about music, jazz or anything, but l was so attracted to his piano playing. It brought me lots of joy and l had no idea who he was.. Thanks Oscar!
His dad tried to discourage him from going the piano route. But told him if you do it, you have to "be the best jazz piano player in the world". I think something like that would humble you because you don't really ever get there, until "the world" tells you you have arrived.
What a charmingly intelligent, and articulate man. It is so much more pleasurable feeling awe for talent of this level, when the human underneath it comes across as so deserving of the admiration.
Agreed. And I think Niels Pedersen was one of the very few players who could not only keep up with Oscar...but give him a run for his money. Yea, they were just total monsters.
Pay tribute to Nat Cole, but especially, to Oscar Peterson, an extraordinary and complex performer, now living in these fine recording ! Thanks for these remembrances of the sound of Oscar's voice and his magnanamous stylings and compositions !
Wow. I never heard those arrangements of Satin Doll & Take The A-Train before, and the transition from Lush Life to Caravan is INSANE. Excellent concert! Thanks so much for posting this marvel.
Oscar was the guvner niels great but also people forget Martin drew a good friend a great drummer I had the pleasure of working with Martin runny Scott Andy on bass a real pleasure in 93 in dubai what a roast up
What a wonderful trio. I'm lucky to have seen Oscar on 4 occasions, the first time was in Belfast in 1963. The last time was at the Barbican Center. What a joy to hear. Need I say any more.
Kind of stumbled upon this. What a delicious package of supreme talent! A beautiful way to celebrate Christmas Eve!!! The gifts this amazing trio gives is priceless and will live for ever.
It’s amazing to see musicians who, despite being able to show off the entire gig for validation brownie points, can see almost all the beauty in music is always only a few steps away from first premises, imo all the momentum of truly memorable beauty & deeper felt meaningfulness in music is found in/catalyzed through the realm of true melodic simplicity. The rhythm is what wraps it together, given it has a directional foundation underneath.
This man played with the best- Lester Young, Teddy Wilson, Duke Ellington, et. al. He was in the Norman Granz shows; it followed that he approached his art with a degree of intensity.
The combination of Oscar Pederson , playing a music called jazz, a title like most that makes it only accessible to “jazz” fans limits its broad scope to the world because its music for the masses; coupled with a true phenomenon, Niels Pedersen , the likes that my never be seen again in not only his technical prowess but sense of time and then there his inner feeling for pure music; makes these two people to be never be forgotten butto be remembered for their love making music. A recording of Caravan is out of this world .....
PETERSON, EST LE MEILLEUR EXEMPLE, DANS LE MONDE MUSICALE, OÙ L'INSPIRATION DIVINE ET LA TRANSPIRATION, VONT DE PAIR...!!! VIVE LUI!!! Directement de Salvador/Brasil.
I was just going to comment on the fabulous talent of NHOP, and who do I see I the comments? The great Ron Carter. No-one else spotted you hiding in the comments, Mr Carter. Respect!!
My youngest brother loves Jazz and he once asked how can can one get a very good jazz pianist and I said I do not know. His answer was take Monk. Powell and Oscar and throw in a test tube and mix them and I looked at him and just kept quiet. I asked him and Art Art Tatum and he said Oscar already is Art. And that is when I stopped discussing jazz with him
excellent concert, special mention for love ballad which is (for me) one of the best version Oscar has played live! but it seems to me that some titles are missing from this concert! like soft wind .. in any case, thank you for sharing, it's been a long time since I wanted to review this concert that I had seen on television .
29:55 'Carnival' Didn't know this song although it sounds familiar. Then at 31:57 ... love the 'schwung' that is given to the theme, pretty amazing, that rythm.

Ya know, I love Oscar Peterson, and all his works. But what he does on piano with his left hand always leaves me in meltdown. This intro to Caravan (and the rest of the song of course) is a prime example of that amazing left hand of his. Bet the piano needed a cigarette afterwards. Also, that was a stunningly beautiful solo by NHOP. Left me breathless!

I love the moment about 53:08 when NHOP touches his bow tie, thinking, "ok, here we go!"
I love when Martin and Niels look at each other before the trio kicks into high gear 53:47

i so love it when Oscar does the Shout on the piano, here(in the finale), and elsewhere, in his career. Hallelujah!! Praise the Lord, Jesus!!!

I've watched this video 4 times in less than a week and I still can't believe how talented Oscar and Niels were
Dont forget Martin. THE best!😊

The other mind-boggling thing is that Oscar suffered from arthritis most of his life. =OO

While there's no doubt about Mr. Petersons fingers on what is probably a Bosendorfer piano. Can we all give it up for that bass player and the drummer
Neils Pedersen's quote of "Things Ain't the Way they Used to Be" on Satin Doll is priceless.
