Listen to Pete Best's drumming in isolation, you'll hear why he was sacked. And he never got any better. Listen to some later recordings. He was bitter, even his mum chimed in, but he was only ever a temporary and only got the job because he had a drum kit and they had no other drummer. He thought he owned a place. Even when The Beatles toured Australia and Ringo was sick with tonsillitis, they bought in someone else rather than consider Pete Best. Stu Sutcliffe was more a member of the band than he was....and he was dead.

      Pete Best.

Please look up Mona Pete’s mother as she was the owner of the best music club at the time. She owned the Casbah Coffee Club in Liverpool and it will help you understand the relationship she had with the bands during that time and how they all depended on her for gigs.

    • @gregoryeatroff8608
      @gregoryeatroff8608 3 месяца назад

The Beatles helped her build the club. Literally -- they did a lot of the painting. Got the gig as the house band because of that, and because the group that was originally supposed to be the house band broke up just before the Casbah opened, and the Beatles were available. That was months before Pete joined.

I saw a youtube video in which one drummer challenged another drummer to play some Ringo Star drumming. The 2nd guy imagined it would be easy as it sounds so simple but discovered that Ringo is like a frickin metronome and the not-so-easy beats were deceptively difficult. I used play in local bands when i was younger. It ain't easy with a drunk bass player and a drummer on amphetamines.

If the Quarrymen drummer had stayed with them we could have had John, Paul, George and Colin. He left after an argument with the band in 1959 (Colin Hanton).

Because of a contract issue, Pete couldn't be fired. Brian was called in to talk him into just leaving, quitting. Brian told him the others wanted him out and Pete was pissed, and in emotion, he quit.

In the US through most of their run, especially in the beginning, Ringo was the fan favorite. He got a lot more fan mail than the others. Although John, Paul, and George were all proficient at their instruments, and played at an intermediate level, Ringo was better at the drums than they on their strings. The other 3 had a leg up on writing songs, but all 4 were the frontman for the group. All 4 were lead singers.

Tne Beatles wanted Bobby Graham to replace Pete Best, but he turned them down. Then they went for Ringo. Graham was probably a better drummer than Ringo but preferred the quieter life as a session man. Check out the wiki page for him to see the more than 100 Top 5 tracks he drummen on. My favourite is I know a place by Petula Clark, his drumming is awesome.

Callous dismissals from a musical group - Pete Best is not alone, he could host a grievance committee with several King Crimsonites, any early-gen Mothers Of Invention who are still alive and not in jail, all the Deep Purple bassists, Matthew Hartley, Michael Dempsey, and...Will Heggie (according to a 1989 article in Sounds).

  • @gregoryeatroff8608

They were right to fire him -- he couldn't handle the challenge of studio recording. George Martin wasn't the first record producer to say so, the Decca staff also said he wasn't up to snuff (though they rejected the whole band), and when they recorded for Bert Kampfert in Germany he stripped down Best's drum kit to the bare minimum.
However they were wrong in the way they went about it, making Brian Epstein do the dirty work while they stayed away. This had been a pattern going back to the Quarrymen days, where John Lennon would get the manager to fire an inadequate member of the band or engineer a fight hoping the other guy would quit in disgust.
And while George was the nicest about the reason for firing Pete in the clips here, he was the most enthusiastic about getting rid of him back in 1962, the first to call for dumping him and bringing in Ringo (though John and Paul didn't take much convincing).
There was a non-musical reason for the Beatles to fire Pete, but it wasn't jealousy. John, Paul, and George (and Stu, when he was their bassist) were extremely close off-stage as well as on, but Pete would only be there for shows, rehearsals, and record-browsing sessions where they looked for new songs to cover. He was just a co-worker and they wanted, NEEDED, a friend. Ringo was that friend. They got to know Ringo in Hamburg in 1960 when they shared the bill at the Kaiserkeller with Rory Storm and the Hurricanes. Even though he was in another band, a RIVAL band, Ringo was much more likely than Pete to hang out with the Beatles, drink with them, joke with them... they liked Ringo from the start, and with Pete it was more that... well... they didn't DISlike him...
Oh, and the band Pete was in before the Beatles was defunct. He was basically sitting around doing nothing when they offered him the drumming gig for the Hamburg trip.

I'm surprised you haven't read "Tune In" by Mark Lewisohn. Or maybe you have and forgotten as the Pete Best "problem" becomes very evident very quickly. He was a shy guy and rarely interacted with them on stage and off. After gigs he would go off on his own while the other 3 (4 when Stu was still there) would stay and hang out. John said that they had wanted to get rid of him sooner but were cowards and waited until they had someone to do it for them.

Not true about Paul wanting him out because he was handsome. That was an invention of author Philip Norman in his book Shout! and it's been rubbished by many people connected with The Beatles, including Paul himself. But it's clear in reading Shout! that Mr Norman clearly dislikes Paul and yet was totally uncritical of John. Not difficult to know who his fave and least fave Beatles were.

The fact of the matter is that Pete Best was an ok drummer but Ringo Starr was better it's just a fact you know at the end of day everyone seems to be forgetting that George Martin who got the Beatles in for the first audition basically turned round to Brian Epstein and said you can do what you want with him on stage x Pete Best but in terms of recording we will have someone else in it's just a fact is this a factor Pete Best was an ok drummer he just wasn't a great drummer that's why George Martin got Andy White in a professional drama and then when Ringo starter and I've not even Ringo Starr got to play on the first takes of Love Me Do because no one told George Martin

I know this is the trendy opinion to have nowadays, but it's hardly groundbreaking since he admits to promoting peace because he knows the other side of it.
He had his issues with fatherhood, but he seemed to be loved by the majority of people who met him. World-renowned producers and musicians say he was one of the most professional and easiest people to work with. So make of that what you will.
