Had a friend in middle school whose dad was a mortician. He sometimes dropped her off at school in a 75...he was the last guy in town to let people down.
I had a ‘73 60 Special as well. It was a fantastic car!! But that ‘72 has no pollution controls at all and has 10.9/1 Compression ratio!! That baby will tool down the road at 100+ mph even at it's 6,000# wt. Most of these “Personal Limousines” were ordered w/o any Driver Comfort features in mind and that's a sad state of affairs. Tilt & Telescopic steering wheel are features that would make an amazing difference for the Driver. Especially since it has shortened leg room. And why, for God’s sake, not give the poor driver Cruise Control and a Right Hand Mirror? Cadillac Engineers could have worked out a way to give that front seat a 60/40 split and 6 way power seat AND still have the leather upholstery attach to the compartment divider. This shows how they had become complacent in their design. And the laziness of installing the rear reading light right in the middle of the AC diffuser - unimaginable!! How hard would it have been to install it at the end? Why wasn't it left in the read quarter panel above shoulder height as it had been for more than a decade prior? The final analysis has to be that it still was a Kingpin for the ONLY manufacturer in the WORLD who continued to build a “Factory” Limousine. In my opinion all those folks who stretch Sedans are missing the boat. Buy the Factory 75 Series Sedans or Limos and stretch them if you really want something even longer. There were a few done but they are incredibly hard to find today!!
I too like the signals between the headlights. 71 the front signal was in the bumper, 72 each headlamp and signal light has its own chromed plastic trim bezel; 73, it appears as if all one piece bezel. Another fun feature about this car is the fiber optic light pipes on the top of the hood so you can see whether the lights are actually functional from the driver's seat.
@@procatiu I know Cadillacs had those at least until the 90's. I had an 86 Fleetwood in the 90's , but don't remember if I had them or not. I loved that car and I had a few fast ones too. My girlfriend at the time had an 86 Camaro so I had the choice of luxury or sport. Miss those days.
I get the impression this is a refurbished barn find that was done on a budget... a very tight budget for a quick flip at high profit - specifically - look at the loosely fitting and wrinkled after-market rear seat covers at 4:37, the marred upper front edges of the jump seats at 3:35, divider operation no one bothered to fix correctly at 3:50, the scratched and dimpled rear window switch plate at 4:24, the three inch torn off triangle of carpet at the door sill that the jump seat hides-follow that forward a few inches and note about 8 inches of the carpet is separated from the door sill behind the front seat at 4:52. I wouldn't buy it worrying about what I CAN'T see
Maybe its in original condition with onl a few stone chips on it along with a nice patina. That the sort of cat you want at you know it won't have been bodged up to sell it
I agree, the rear seat upholstery is not original (jumpseat upholstery is original) and was done crappy, also the newer carpet in 1/2 of the back seat area is also crap. I believe this was a disaster and they tried to cover the junk with material. As the old saying goes "You can put lipstick on a Pig in but it's still a Pig"

You would most probably re-upholster it anyway. The budget for that won't kill you. The trunk is surprisingly nice and intact. You don't see that too often. The devider should only be operable from the rear seat. These cars are really nice old school classics. I used to chauffeur a 1971, owned a 1978 for a number of years. We enjoyed it a lot. It was completely stock and unmolested. There is a 1972 for sale about an hour from here. It has been for sale for about 20 years!!! Could be because somebody took the vinyl roof off and painted it white. My heart goes out to a 1973. I drove a 1973 Coupé de Ville for many years. I really like that year, in particular the Fleetwood 75. But they are rare.
A nice rare ride. Love it! It's actually great to see one that is running and in fairly decent conditon for soon to be 50. It has the excepted patina for its age and not a trailer queen. It's unbelievable some of the unnessary assumptions and comments made tearing it apart for no apparent reason. Ridiculous and mostly likely jealousy.
Thanks for the kind words, when I find these cars in serviceable condition I don't attempt to cure the sins of their past, rather maintain and them as best I can for as long as I can.
Most same with tilt and telescope, but the driver's compartment is so tight, you feel forced into good posture and like a toy soldier. It improves visibility and tilt of the wheel would be of little use, it's a job to drive the car and a pleasure to ride in the back.
@@procatiuthe ones with the partition were not very driver friendly. Front bench only went front and back and they were all pressed up against the partition as much as possible unless you were under 5’ tall. The steering had no tilt/telescopic. The ones without the partition had a full control bench seat, tilt/telescopic steering.
About 5 years ago I cleaned all the door window tracks in grease motors and they all work much better, the partition mechanisms need to be accessed from the front requiring the front seat removal and I have not done that.
These make a great family and fun hobby car. I had a 1975, bought it in running, driving condition with weathered vinyl top and paint at a auction for 400 dollars in 1993 lol.

Asking is 9500 on the car, however it is difficult to determine fair pricing as few Series 75 were made and even fewer remain today. I suspect the car will winter in the hanger, but will consider offers. I would think it would be best suited for someone who wanted to enjoy the car as is, or for someone who wish to do a complete restoration as it is mostly original and most hard to get castings parts are present and in good condition.

Its a rare person that enjoys the cars of the American elites of the 70's, my understanding this one was an army Colonel's car. But have seen footage a 1972 Cadillac Fleetwood Series 75, visiting the White House during the height of Watergate. Owners of 1972 Cadillac Fleetwood Series 75 include Chiang Kai-shek and Elvis (sedan version). It's a mobile sitting room in the rear and throw back experience to take a sightseeing day trip.
Maybe I'm missing something, but what is the purpose of jump seats when they take away room from the back seat? How do four+ people sit in the back with the jump seats down?
It's considered a 9 passenger vehicle, 3 across the front and six in the rear. No would would plan a road trip with it fully loaded, however, if there was an unexpected associate(s) you'd have room for a short trip to lunch or what not. For some executives, I assume the jump seats were used for their children when going to church or a walk in the park. The seats provided options, but these cars were designed for two. The driver and the proprietor.

As shown here, it's seems adults sit either in a jump seat or the regular seat but not both. Maybe this car was designed for the executive's secretary to sit in a jump seat and executive to sit opposite side.

The Lincoln's (and RR's) of the time had rear facing jump seats where passenger legs would share leg space which could create awkward situations as well. I don't think people looked at the "jump seats" and thought comfort, cause they are not the definition of comfort on limousines, nor aircraft. The axillary seats provide options that those with a sedan simply do not. A unique feature out of the financial reach of most. GM charged $12,080 base for the limousine vs $5,938 for the Calais Sedan. For twice the price a buyer got an extra 20 inches in wheel base, rear independent automatic climate control, two inch ceiling lift, jump seats and an auto leveling air rear suspension to handle a fully loaded vehicle. (As well as additional fabric choices) If one needed a people hauler, they purchased the Chevy Suburban for $3,610 MSRP and would save over 8k. (Inflation adjusted [1972 to 2021] 24k suburban vs 79k Cadillac Limousine)

Digital watches just became available for purchase. 1970, the average price of a home was 23k. Average income 9.4k. Gas $0.36 a gallon, the car gets 6.5 mpg around town and 9.5 mpg at highway speeds. These are the things I'm generally thinking about while enjoying the car, it reminds me how different America was 50 years ago.
Certainly one wouldn't plan a road trip with all nine seats filled. These were often used in conjunction with a hearse and would carry the six pallbearers. Other times these cars were used by executives but then on Sundays they would load up their kids in the back to go to church. GM made the same nine passenger long wheel base in a sedan and limousine configuration, the difference being if there was a divider window installed. The nine passenger sedans were nearly twice the price of a regular DeVille, so perhaps the custom fold-down seats seats was something to help justify that price tag.

@@rscamarolover the 74 is the last year of the straight pipe. No catalytic converter. It’s the only year of the round headlights together. The “seventy-five” model looks really sharp up to 1977. Cadillac really went cheap 1977, 78 and 79-micro thin headliner that drooped. Plastic on the front. Smaller engines. Narrow bodies and the taxi 🚕 cab sliding glass partition. Up to 1976, that electric partition glass was like a bullet proof bank teller glass 😂😂. Now, if the car has the partition, the driver gets screwed-bench seat only goes front and back. Not a lot of room in the front. No tilt/telescopic steering wheel. The caddies without the partition have a full control driver bench seat.

Although I've changed the taillights on the 3 '77 fleetwoods that I've had to resemble the 78 and 9. My dad had caddies of every year and body style and a collection of them at all times . He even had a 69 fleetwood which 69 and 70 I'd never want do to the fugly front end but I agree 💯 that in 77 when they downsized they started getting cheaper but up to the real RWD caddies (fleetwoods) not hideous chopped eyesore it mobiles that even the 92 Fleetwood (rwd only) are beautiful cars

I didn't have the limo version but when it was five years old someone gave it to me! It drove excellent but when the front end went out it was going to cost me 1000 dollars to fix! I sold as is for 1000 dollars!

I redid the entire front suspension on a 74 coupe. My neighbor said I better take it to get an alignment before I chew up my tires. Took it to great bear (remember great bear 😂). The guy came out and asked me what I brought the car in for. I said wheel alignment-I just redid the front end and I only did the caster, camber by eye. He said “well, you were 2 degrees off!”
These were beautiful in styling but were horribly constructed. I owned a white `72 Coupe DeVille with Wedgewood Blue leather interior. Unfortunately, the drive shaft, A/C compressor, and alternator all failed. The ring gear on the flex plate broke 3 times and it starting rusting from inside the trunk lid. The car was only 4 years old.
I had a Camaro from that era, when GM was starting its decline. Our house was GM loyal and we just put up with system failures for a while because we were all loyal Americans & Chevrolet/Pontiac owners.

As we were driving a few blocks from our home, we saw a jeep Cherokee with flames pouring from under the hood. There’s still marks on the street today! 😂. Engine temperature? The car has an engine over heated (too late) light in the dash. No gauge. The automatic climate control has a temperature wheel where the driver can set the temperature it's located to the left of the steering wheel. There are also independent climate controls in the rear compartment in the passenger side slider compartment.
@@whammond511 The rear radio controls were an option. Cars used for hire or funeral homes generally didn't have this option, private cars typically would have. This car I believe was a private car based on the stories, but does not have the rear radio controls nor the power door lock. (Nor cruise control or automatic lights or automatic high beam dimming)
@@procatiu My ‘63 Limo had both the rear radio controls and the Rear Heater & AC controls. The radio controls were on the armrest and had a Sliding Tambour door. The HVAC Controls were in the sliding door compartment.
Good point, these had rear independent climate control. So the equipment for that is were the spare tire was stored on other models. I suspect that if these were used for hire, the spare tire was removed and the organization operating the service had a support vehicle with spare tires and other commonly needed items. That said, the trunk is rather deep. A suitcase can be placed on top of the spare and the truck still easily closed so you can double stack. For scale, the spare tire is the size of a common SUV/truck tire. (Same as the Ford Rangers of 2000's)

A vehicle this old has most likely undergone some repairs in its like and not everyone is a purists. Still a nice car to enjoy I give credit to anyone trying to preserve these cars.
Understandable, while I've owned the vehicle I've attempted to simply maintain the condition that I received her in. And get non-working systems working. Most notably the front and rear automatic climate controls including AC.
As the owner of a 72 60S, these are very hard to get as quiet as original due the difficulty of sourcing the original double walled pipes. This one sounds just like mine, louder than it should, which has a comp,etc new exhaust system.
Agreed, rear upholstery is due for restoration. SMS Auto Fabrics in Portland Oregon has the looms to reproduce the original baroque design fabric. ($100 a yard, requires approximately 10 yards to restore the rear and jump seat upholstery) Behind the seat covering is the upper original seat, the lower was missing when I acquired and has been replaced with a white leather seat from a 71 coupe.
@@dcan911 A lot of times the rear seats of a coupe didn't have much wear on them so can be a good replacement if found. However the fabric patterns on the coops were all different than what was made available for the fleetwoods unless you special ordered one of the basic fabrics.

I've never seen a Cadillac without a tilt wheel

The partition mechanism may need the assist spring to be replaced or refitted.

Maybe I'm missing something, but what is the purpose of jump seats when they take away room from the back seat? How do four+ people sit in the back with the jump seats down?
It's considered a 9 passenger vehicle, 3 across the front and six in the rear. No would would plan a road trip with it fully loaded, however, if there was an unexpected associate(s) you'd have room for a short trip to lunch or what not.
For some executives, I assume the jump seats were used for their children when going to church or a walk in the park.
The seats provided options, but these cars were designed for two. The driver and the proprietor.
@@procatiu I get all that but other designs of this nature let adults sit comfortably with jump seats down. As shown here, it's seems adults sit either in a jump seat or the regular seat but not both. Maybe this car was designed for the executive's secretary to sit in a jump seat and executive to sit opposite side.
@@LearnAboutFlow The passengers in the rear load first, then the jump seats fold over the rear passenger legs and the next row loads. The Lincoln's (and RR's) of the time had rear facing jump seats where passenger legs would share leg space which could create awkward situations as well.
I don't think people looked at the "jump seats" and thought comfort, cause they are not the definition of comfort on limousines, nor aircraft. The axillary seats provide options that those with a sedan simply do not. A unique feature out of the financial reach of most.
GM charged $12,080 base for the limousine vs $5,938 for the Calais Sedan. For twice the price a buyer got an extra 20 inches in wheel base, rear independent automatic climate control, two inch ceiling lift, jump seats and an auto leveling air rear suspension to handle a fully loaded vehicle. (As well as additional fabric choices)
If one needed a people hauler, they purchased the Chevy Suburban for $3,610 MSRP and would save over 8k. (Inflation adjusted [1972 to 2021] 24k suburban vs 79k Cadillac Limousine)

1970, the average price of a home was 23k. Average income 9.4k. Gas $0.36 a gallon, the car gets 6.5 mpg around town and 9.5 mpg at highway speeds.
These are the things I'm generally thinking about while enjoying the car, it reminds me how different America was 50 years ago.

Whats the purpose of the jump seats?when you pull them out the people in the rear seat literally have no leg room.
Certainly one wouldn't plan a road trip with all nine seats filled. These were often used in conjunction with a hearse and would carry the six pallbearers. Other times these cars were used by executives but then on Sundays they would load up their kids in the back to go to church. GM made the same nine passenger long wheel base in a sedan and limousine configuration, the difference being if there was a divider window installed. The nine passenger sedans were nearly twice the price of a regular DeVille, so perhaps the custom fold-down seats seats was something to help justify that price tag.

@@rscamarolover the 74 is the last year of the straight pipe. No catalytic converter. It’s the only year of the round headlights together. The “seventy-five” model looks really sharp up to 1977. Cadillac really went cheap 1977, 78 and 79-micro thin headliner that drooped. Plastic on the front. Smaller engines. Narrow bodies and the taxi 🚕 cab sliding glass partition. Up to 1976, that electric partition glass was like a bullet proof bank teller glass 😂😂. Now, if the car has the partition, the driver gets screwed-bench seat only goes front and back. Not a lot of room in the front. No tilt/telescopic steering wheel. The caddies without the partition have a full control driver bench seat.
@@grazz7865 The fact that 74 is the last year with round headlights to me is what makes her better looking than their 75 and 6 siblings. Although I've changed the taillights on the 3 '77 fleetwoods that I've had to resemble the 78 and 9. My dad had caddies of every year and body style and a collection of them at all times . He even had a 69 fleetwood which 69 and 70 I'd never want do to the fugly front end but I agree 💯 that in 77 when they downsized they started getting cheaper but up to the real RWD caddies (fleetwoods) not hideous chopped eyesore it mobiles that even the 92 Fleetwood (rwd only) are beautiful cars
@@rscamarolover 1980-1990 they actually went back to the wide body. Luxurious interiors. But that HT4100 motor was a disaster. The 4-6-8 wasn’t much better. I believe there was an option for a chevy 350 at the time?

I didn't have the limo version but when it was five years old someone gave it to me! It drove excellent but when the front end went out it was going to cost me 1000 dollars to fix! I sold as is for 1000 dollars!

I redid the entire front suspension on a 74 coupe. My neighbor said I better take it to get an alignment before I chew up my tires. Took it to great bear (remember great bear 😂). The guy came out and asked me what I brought the car in for. I said wheel alignment-I just redid the front end and I only did the caster, camber by eye. He said “well, you were 2 degrees off!”

These were beautiful in styling but were horribly constructed. I owned a white `72 Coupe DeVille with Wedgewood Blue leather interior. Unfortunately, the drive shaft, A/C compressor, and alternator all failed. The ring gear on the flex plate broke 3 times and it starting rusting from inside the trunk lid. The car was only 4 years old.
I had a Camaro from that era, when GM was starting its decline. Our house was GM loyal and we just put up with system failures for a while because we were all loyal Americans & Chevrolet/Pontiac owners.

As we were driving a few blocks from our home, we saw a jeep Cherokee with flames pouring from under the hood. There’s still marks on the street today! 😂. Engine temperature? The car has an engine over heated (too late) light in the dash. No gauge. The automatic climate control has a temperature wheel where the driver can set the temperature it's located to the left of the steering wheel. There are also independent climate controls in the rear compartment in the passenger side slider compartment.
@@procatiu In that compartment where the Rear Climate Controls are used to be rear radio controls.
@@whammond511 The rear radio controls were an option. Cars used for hire or funeral homes generally didn't have this option, private cars typically would have. This car I believe was a private car based on the stories, but does not have the rear radio controls nor the power door lock. (Nor cruise control or automatic lights or automatic high beam dimming)
@@procatiu My ‘63 Limo had both the rear radio controls and the Rear Heater & AC controls. The radio controls were on the armrest and had a Sliding Tambour door. The HVAC Controls were in the sliding door compartment.

For a limo the trunk is not much bigger than a sports car. If taking folks to an airport where did they stash all the suitcases?
Good point, these had rear independent climate control. So the equipment for that is were the spare tire was stored on other models. I suspect that if these were used for hire, the spare tire was removed and the organization operating the service had a support vehicle with spare tires and other commonly needed items.
That said, the trunk is rather deep. A suitcase can be placed on top of the spare and the truck still easily closed so you can double stack.
For scale, the spare tire is the size of a common SUV/truck tire. (Same as the Ford Rangers of 2000's)

Sounds like an incorrect exhaust. Originally would have been much quieter . But still a nice survivor.
Probably not wrong, considering the age. I didn't have the exhaust done during my ownership of the car.
@@procatiu i had a 1974 and friend had 1972 as you know I'm not there to personally inspect but it does sound incorrect. A vehicle this old has most likely undergone some repairs in its like and not everyone is a purists. Still a nice car to enjoy I give credit to anyone trying to preserve these cars.
Understandable, while I've owned the vehicle I've attempted to simply maintain the condition that I received her in. And get non-working systems working. Most notably the front and rear automatic climate controls including AC.
As the owner of a 72 60S, these are very hard to get as quiet as original due the difficulty of sourcing the original double walled pipes. This one sounds just like mine, louder than it should, which has a comp,etc new exhaust system.

She car is black and no signs of blue under. Some areas (half of hood) have been resprayed, but original paint appears to have been black.

Agreed, rear upholstery is due for restoration. SMS Auto Fabrics in Portland Oregon has the looms to reproduce the original baroque design fabric. ($100 a yard, requires approximately 10 yards to restore the rear and jump seat upholstery)
Behind the seat covering is the upper original seat, the lower was missing when I acquired and has been replaced with a white leather seat from a 71 coupe.

@@dcan911 A lot of times the rear seats of a coupe didn't have much wear on them so can be a good replacement if found. However the fabric patterns on the coops were all different than what was made available for the fleetwoods unless you special ordered one of the basic fabrics.
