  • Have you ever seen an original factory limousine? Throdle app member, Norman, from Missouri invites Nadine into his custom garage with 9000 car memorabilia to check out his 8 passenger 1977 Cadillac Fleetwood Factory Limousine named "Emily."
    Norman shows off some old Cadillac Dealer Books - upholstery, exterior and merchandising guide for you to choose your options. 'Emily' is painted in Jennifer Blue on the exterior, and Florentine Blue on the interior. We also get to see the actual advertisements run for the limousine back in the day.
    The fins at the back where the tail lights are to pay homage to the fins on the Cadillacs of the 60s.
    Under the hood, it's got a 185 HP, 7 L engine with a single four-barrel carburetor. This limousine model did not have a divider window between the Chauffeur and the passengers unlike Cadillac's Formal Limousine.
    The car is also long, being 244 inches long with a 144 inch wheel base to seat eight people. The limo was originally used for by a law firm in Minnesota to take attorneys to and from airports. And with just about any other limo from its time, most other parts are standard, including automatic climate and level control, a dual accessory control panel, power antenna and remote control mirrors.

    When I was in high school (I graduated in '68) our family car was a '60 Cadillac limousine. There were eight of us, so it fit. It was very comfortable. We got used to it. It had originally been owned by a mortuary, so it was in very good, low miles, condition. I loved that car. My current car is an '85 Eldorado Biarritz. I've had it fifteen years, and plan to keep it. You keep on enjoying yours.

      I used to know a lady whose father bought Chrysler 7 passenger sedans back in the 40s and 50s as they had a large family, too. It sounds a lot nicer than the SUVs of today.

    • @williamschoemann4209

      @@1940limited You're right. Back in the sixties SUVs hadn't been invented. The Chevy Suburban was still a work truck. The alternative for a large family was a nine passenger station wagon. The limousine was more attractive and comfortable. Factory limousines are very rare. The rented monstrosities of the past few decades are sedans, which have been stretched in the midde. A limousine has a rectangular window in the door, and a smaller window behind it. The proportions are much nicer.

    This model Cadillac was the first limousine I was ever a passenger in. My parents rented a silver version for my date and I for the junior-senior prom, in Ferndale MI. it was held at the Pine Knob Mansion in Clarkston, MI. We also went to downtown Detroit and visited the lounge in the Renaissance Center hotel called The Summit. At that time the lounge revolved with beautiful views of Canada and metro Detroit. It was my first visit to The Summit, years later it became a favorite place to go for drinks, especially when a snowstorm was brewing. It was so relaxing to have few cocktails, sit back, and watch the snow fly outside. It felt like you were inside a huge snow globe. I visited the hotel a few other times in Cadillac and Lincoln limousines, it was always a treat to pull up to the entrance and have the doorman swing into action opening the rear door, and help you out of those beautiful limousines.

    There was never another car manufactured that has been so collectable and cherished in the American psyche than Cadillac. The family of my best friend when I was growing up bought a 1977 Sedan de Ville brand new. I'll never forget how special that car was. Lincoln and Chrysler did their best to top Cadillac, and present their products to the public at a cheaper price, but nothing could top a Cadillac. Absolutely wonderful video.

    • @Throdle
      @Throdle  2 года назад

      Thank you so much and for sharing your memories with us. We love hearing about how special these cars were to folks. Interesting to see the evolution of Cadillac now… if you say today’s Chrysler versus Cadillac would Cadillac still come out on top?

    • @TVHouseHistorian
      @TVHouseHistorian 2 года назад +1

      @@Throdle You’re very welcome. Wow, that is such a good question! I think Cadillac’s value in the US is truly psychological. Otherwise, Cadillacs of the 1970’s are virtually no different than any other luxury car offered in those days. Each brand has its own pluses and minuses. As for how Cadillacs of today compare with other domestic luxury brands, that one’s a question that requires some good thought in order to come up with an appropriate answer. Offhand, I bias toward Cadillac, if for no other reason but the fact that it remains a very special brand of luxury that sticks in my psyche. It’s value is probably purely sentimental for me. Do I think Cadillacs of today will be regarded as classics like the 1977’s? I really doubt it. With the increasing globalization of concepts and ideas happening right now, there is nothing being produced anymore that authentically says “AMERICA.” It seems like the American identity is steadily being absorbed into the global conglomerate to such an extent that nothing is special or sacred anymore. For me, today’s Cadillac remains special, so I go for Cadillac. But that doesn’t mean Lincoln or Chrysler aren’t turning out some nice things as well. All that being said, it’s difficult to distinguish between domestic and imported cars these days, and that really grieves me.

The ride quality is so smooth, you'd barely feel like you were moving. They've got computer controlled ride control nowadays but this was just a well engineered union of spring rate and shock absorbers. And of course mile deep upholstery didn't hurt either.

    Owned a 1978 Fleetwood limousine like this one - without partition - for a number of years and drove over 60K miles in it. It was black with a black vinyl top and grey velour interior. Completely stock. No boomerang antenna, which I don't like. We only added telephones front and rear with a public and private number to switch between. This is a downsize limousine. But regardless it being a pre- or post-downsize model, the limousines without partition are always more comfortable for the driver, unless the driver is short. I myself am 1,85 meter, and I am too tall for a partition limousine for a long drive.
    I can drive very comfortably in this non-partition limousine for hours on end.
    I used it for my livery business driving airline crews to and from the airport. Also did a lot of weddings and a number of proms. If we had to go to social events ourselves, we hired a chauffeur and sat in the back ourselves. When I sold it, it had driven over 200K miles and was still running strong. It was a VERY strong and reliable car. I am looking for a similar limousine again, as we want one for when we
    retire.

    • @Throdle
      @Throdle  3 года назад

    Hi from the surfer paradise coat of California, from someone who has combined cars and surfing since 1966 until this very day. Now I have a 1990 jeeplike toyota landcruiser, because I go offroad alot to uncrowded surf spots, when I began I choose between a '62 xk-e jaguar, a'49 chevy sedan delivery wagon, a morris minor woodie, and a chevy corvair van. Jags being complicated to maintain, I didn't choose this black hardtop roadster. Had many vans since then, enjoying stylin' them out, as a lifestyle and small business. One day in about 1995 a journey up the west coast from the mexican border to up in vancouver, with surfboards and my wife, was envisioned..... and we did it across a whole year. All in our Velvet Blue Interior exact same '77 fleetwood factory limo, silver in color, the ultimate cruiser camper!!!

    • @brucejoslen2021
      @brucejoslen2021 3 года назад +1

      @@Throdle It was not too expensive to get NZ approval.
      We have to have a left hand drive permit and the actual
      compliance to NZ 'standards' is sometimes arduous.
      For example, all the brakes had to be replaced. Which
      was silly, because they were already new. I had to
      purchase parts from a recognised NZ supplier.
      So the new parts we fitted, were exactly the same brand
      originated from the US, and now the 'approved' local.

    Hey man... I love your '77. Only year for those tail lamps!!! I love the '80 to '84 body styles and would be pleased to own one. I personally own a 2000 Deville 6 door 24 hour limo built by Federal Coach. I use it every Sunday to pick up elderly that no longer drive and run a church shuttle service with this car. I'm from Indiana but found the 6 door in Millville, New Jersey. I flew to Philly from South Bend and then an Uber to the limo's location in New Jersey. I bought it and drove it home. It had it's shares of flaws and dings. I sanded the car down and repainted it Texudo Black Metallic, a Ford Motor Company color, taking it from it's original GM black, which was WA8555. I refinished the wide "B" pillar that graces 4 opera lamps, in 8555 to mainstream the solid gloss black look that is on the rest of the door pillars alongside the car, but the rest is Ford's color. I was proud of its outcome. I chose a 6 door specifically for the practical needs of the seniors I provide service to. I enjoy providing the service weekly, no charge of course, as it's for the church. Many people truly have been blessed by its use. I never imagined I'd touch so many lives, but these seniors think it's fantastic. They tell their children families of the service provided and I've attended a few funerals and viewings as some of my guests have passed on. When their families ask of who I am or how I knew their deceased loved one, I tell them I was their driver from church and that we attended church together. It has been at those moments of conversation... I realized how much what I do meant to them and their family. I seriously have been so incredibly blessed to be able to do this service or "ministry" as some refer it as. Who would have thought I would be able to bless lives with a 26 foot 22 year old limousine. It's not worth a ton, no, but it is extremely beautiful. It's definitely a head turner and a service that is enjoyed by myself and my recipients. Blessings dude. Message me at darrengriffith12141980@gmail.com I would love go know you and your limousine. I am a land yacht lover of 1980s automobiles and don't think I didn't notice your bustle back Seville. I want one terribly. I would love to have a 1985 Commemorative Edition in Cotillion White with the two tone leather interior. 😍

I miss these cars so much. I also wanna rebuy this same limo for me and my dad but this time get the brougham edtion at least or brougham delagance if im lucky. With the old school aerial on the stock lol love it. The second last of the big Cadillacs with fins.

    I had a '78 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham with the D'Elegance interior. Loved it. Such a classy, comfortable machine. It wasn't without its flaws, which showed up as it got older (Late 70s Delco electronics....might as well have been made by Lucas of England.) but there wasn't a nicer way to have a comfortable long road trip. I'd love to get another one and modernize certain aspects of it while keeping the original appearance inside and out.

    In the early/mid '80's, I worked for a guy who had 3 limos along with some shuttle vans/cars for airport work. We were based in Orange, Calif so went all over SoCal. His other 2 limos were early '80's stretched Lincoln's. But he also had a Formal Caddy. As a driver, my personal preference regarding ride was for the Lincoln's. But I learned to drive in Cadillac's so I guess you could say, they were my first love! Unfortunately, the Formal did, indeed have a divider behind the front seat, and it was like having a board to lean back against. Very uncomfortable. Whenever I took that car anywhere, you really knew your place as just a driver, vs pampered client! On the other hand, the Caddy never left me stranded on the side of a freezing cold two lane in the dark half way between Victoville and Tahoe!! Lol!

    • @Throdle

      I worked for wages & tips. I didn't own the cars. I actually became a truck driver later on. As for comfort, that divider really took the fun out of it for me, the hired hand. Maybe not as bad as being in a very much older limousine with an open cab to the elements, and with passengers enclosed, since you were also enclosed. But it certainly reminded you, that you were the hired help! I actually did not know that the factory made any other sort of limo other than the Formal. This was very interesting to learn about. Thank you!

When the series was downsized GM made changes to their manufacturing for the 75 Series. it came back in 1985 to 1987 as a front wheel drive version in formal and sedan models.

    Would make a nice weekend toy if you can find one. They're rare these days and usually found in barns all beat up and stripped out or all rusted out in the back of funeral homes. Hollywood wrecked a lot of them in movie stunts and some people freaked them all out with crazy paint and nasty ugly custom interior jobs because they didn't realize how rare these cars were. GM only produced around 2000 of these per year and 1984 was the last year for this body style with 1987 being the series finale. The 425 V8 used in this car is a smooth and strong performer that hauls ass oh so gracefully.
