Same episode that The Supremes did their final performance with Diana Ross. That twice that Petula Clark and the Supremes were on the same episode of Ed Sullivan as they were both performers on the October 10, 1965 episode. Additionally, the Supremes sang with Clark on the Rogers and Hart special from 1967 (not Ed Sullivan). They crossed paths several times during the 1960's.
The way I'd heard it, she'd been in Québec, Canada, but had to go back to France for a charity show and then fly straight back to New York for this show. She must have been exhausted... and the band played Downtown at the wrong tempo!
She was a child star in England, working on stage, she did 500 live BBC radio shows during the war, she toured England with Julie Andrews as children, she had multiple film roles, stage musicals and she sang across Europe in 5 languages. She’d been a recording artist for 16 years before she unexpectedly broke America. She was no doubt used to just having to get out there and do it!
The Ed Sullivan Show had a full rehearsal on Sunday afternoon at 1 PM. Petula arrived just in time for the Full Rehearsal without having time to rehearse on her own. Listen to the time frame Ed gives at the beginning.
USMC 64--68. Well, I hate to admit it. But this is one of many that I did not get to see. And because I was somewhere in the Jungle in that place (a living Hell on Earth) called Vietnam. Came Home in early March of 66. But I do have many precious memories.
@@resurrectionsunday In 1964 before Downtown Petula was busy with her pop career in France and Italy .and French Canada the only time in the 1960’s Petula was an opening act was her debut at Caesars Palace Las Vegas when she was special guest star to Woody Allen in 1966 after which she headlined there and in concert all over the world throughout the 60’s and 70’s
@@mikeyenfield - I was just making a point to the original poster that there was absolutely no irony in Petula performing a song about England, regardless of who wrote it (in this case, Roger Miller - not "Rodger")
Petula has plenty of soul if you listen to her covers of Every little bit hurts and Tears of a clown ,Petula can and has sung all genres of music in a near 80 year career and was still doing one woman concerts as late as 2019.Pure class .
Dusty was certainly more soulful. However, Petula had such versatility she was able to move on from 60s pop to Vegas headliner, tv specials, movies, Broadway and the West End.
There is NOTHING wrong what so ever with squeaky clean. Squeaky clean is BRILLIANT. And so is Petula Clark. Petula Clark .... she is a Super Star in the music world .... Talent and class
Petula Clark is THE GREATEST FEMALE VOCALIST OF ALL TIME.
Kathy Kirby, my secret loves no secret anymore
I love that song DOWNTOWN
Wow!!! Petula looks absolutely beautiful! And she's still a real English rose.
Petula Clark is ABSOLUTELY STUNNINGLY BEAUTIFUL BEYOND BELIEF.
Happy 90th Birthday Petula!
Brilliant find.
He was way before my time, but my parents always said that Ed Sullivan was an absolute, total gentleman. Seems like we lost our way somewhere.
Also the first and probably only host at the time to insist on having black artists on his shows when the networks didn't really want to.
Incredibly talented and beautiful !!!
Respect,Petula 🎶🎶🎶♥️
This song brings me happy memories as a child.

I never knew she had come straight from the airport and sang on the show with no rehearsal.
~ Show business actually had _talent_ back in those days ... 🎶👌

Gorgeous and elegant blonde but especially an espressive and good pop singer
This tune has a great groove!

Jackie De Shannon opened for the Beatles.

This is a good song for Portland Oregon...
Of course!
He calls her 'Pet'. Very American. We always shorten names.
She was known as 'Pet' way back in her child-star days in England.
@Barry W, she is called Pet in England too.
This interview was not in 1965. Early 70s
1969 TV soecial
This clip does not have the feel of a regular Ed Sullivan Show. Perhaps it was an anniversary program or special.
It was a Sullivan tv special celebration of the 1960s recorded in December 1969

How ironic, that she ends up singing a song by the American Rodger Miller 😀
An American TV show discussing England and she performs a song about what they are discussing. I must have missed the irony.
