It also was fun for us as teachers to teach in this way! I know that I would never be able to teach in a traditional setting because I would be bored before of the end of day one. It took a great deal of research and prep to successfully teach this way but it was well worth the effort!
I'm jealous of these kids, I guess they call that progress! It takes a talented teacher to expand on a child's idea and incorporate so many disciplines into a single subject. What I would like to know is how can this type of learning operate within a strict curriculum? What measures are taken to ensure that the children are receiving a rounded education and are prepared for the next level?
This is SO awesome...I'm currently going to school to be a teacher, and this is exactly the way I plan on running my classroom in the future!! I'm all about project-based, child-centered curriculum...the children learn SO much more that way!!
I am also going to teach in class and I will show this video so my students would be inspired and encouraged after viewing this video. Even if we can't do any thing to this boy but our prays go to this boy!!!!!
This is the method of learning that will work. It's all based on using the entire brain and interrelating to what people, children understand in their model of reality. Relating to reality has been a sore point for a number of years in American schools. Not so in other schools around the world. In many ways America is just catching up to schools in counties like Norway and Sweden. Computerization seems to be driving it. This is fantastic and long over due.

This video is amazing! I am taking classes in Early Childhood Education so I dedcided to see what schools are like these days. I admire the teachers for teaching kids about real life events like how to board on an airplane and how to travel to countries.

Good on you! When you think about it it's no wonder many kids go off the rails when there's no logical link between one subject and the next.
Love every bit of this - it's about LEARNING, not teaching! One question - I want to know from whence came the topics of Brazil and Africa? How was it relevant to the children? My ECE students will want to know. Thanks!

Reading some og the passages I realized that i have been teaching on many different types of methodology depending on the duration of the topic of the day or event that is scheduled.
It looks wonderful, but do you think you could do this with 28 students in class? Do you have a pacing guide so that you are on the same page with the other kindergarten classes in the district? Just trying to figure out how it would work within my reality.

Still doesn't address class size. I see all these great videos with 5-10 kids in them. That just not realistic with 28 students in a class

In the inner city, you have kids who can't write, cut, glue, fold paper, etc... who do not know what an airport, airplane is... who can't write their name and do not know the alphabet or sounds... There is a certain level of knowledge and skills to start PBL and majority of public school kids in big cities do not have it, SO this is not a right fit for those kids.
