Tom started in Blink with a Strat that he modified over the years, around '97 Gibson gave him 2 Les Pauls wich he again modified to a point where he only had the bridge humbucker with a volume control. In '99 he started playing prototype versions of what became the signature Strat. During a break from touring with Blink, Tom started doing Boxcarracer and he picked up an ES335 to get different sounds and to ease his backpain. Over time he started modifying that too and by the time his Fender deal was over, he approached Gibson to make him some custom versions of the ES model he'd been playing, for him to use live with Blink. He never meant it to turn it into a signature model of any kind.
The Strat is the classic Blink tone, but I really like the Starcaster too. I wonder if Tom ever tried dropping an Invader into his semi hollow guitars, but maybe it was feeding back in a Semi-Hollow. Still, it’s a more mature, less in your face sounding version of his Strat. I am more of a two pickup, lots of options player, but I can see why people might want a no-frills, one-trick pony. These are both great guitars. Dagan always does the best demos - I haven’t seen a side by side like this done yet. Thanks, Dagan!
I have both and I will always prefer the Strat over the Starcaster. It just feels more comfortable to me. However the Starcaster gets some really great tones, cleans up better and way more versatile than the Strat.
He switched to the bigger guitars because he started having back problems cause he had his guitar strap so low so he starting playing the bigger guitars to help with that
I remember Tom being interviewed about the Starcaster, he said one reason he went to the hollow body is it felt like a more mature guitar.

I preferred the strat sound
In an interview Tom, being a taller guy, compared the strat to playing a violin on stage

My Hello Kitty guitar has the same neck and parts as a Tom DeLong guitar 😅
I know there’s Gator cases and others that fit, but wish those Starcasters came either a hard case.
Sick. Too good.

The Starcaster just sounds so good.
I remember when Fender released those guitars and was blown away. I’m not a huge Blink-182 fan, but they are a great band
Maybe he switched to give it “The best, the best, the best , The best of YOUuu”
This gent naturally makes a connection. The key to making a sell.
I got that strat with the invader pup, it has won my heart
