In studying for a major exam, I had to learn the word ersatz, which caused me to pause and think, that looks German. In German it means a substitute or replacement while in English it means artificial or an inferior substitute.

I learned the word Ersatz in a whole different way. I used to play war thunder in which there was an American tank named M10. And there was another German tank named Ersatz M10. Historically speaking the Germans did capture the American M10 and fitted it with their own KwK 42 cannon. It was done so to throw the American forces off guard and disguise as an American tank. It’s near impossible for me to forget the meaning of this word.
