Small correction: The Vision Pro doesn't use facial scanning tech to log users in. It uses Optic Id, which is their new iris scanning tech to log users in.
yep, face just use to make face model when we need video meeting, log in use optic

Great video, did not think of Tim cook that way till watching your video. I know he didn't single handedly built the headset, but he's in leadership position that brought the tech that allowed all that was required to assemble into one.
This is just the start of something much bigger.
Can't wait to see how it unfolds 5-10 years down the line.
please wait 5 years patiently!
Pretty sure the design aesthetic is that of Jon Ive so wouldn't be surprise to know he had this concepted for a long time, but they needed more time to build the software.
How is this tim product when he just showed how jobs had been researching with including prototypes back then? Is it not just him improving Steve's project just like they do to the iphone? I dont have any issues with tim I think he is a brilliant ceo ,just wondering how this could be his legacy product as suggested by the video
It was about time . Until now he mainly shoveled money while playing it safe. Make the phone bigger, make it smaller.
..... design and usability v supply chain guy.
@@davadh What about the external battery with the ugly cable out of the headset
You’re not going to kill Quest when the vision pro requires average joe to take a mortgage to afford one
FOR SURE
JUST PUTS COOK IN THE SAME WACKO GROUP AS ZUCK
I don't think it's fair to say that Apple has killed Meta Quest. Fundamentally, they are two very distinct visions. While the Quest platform definitely has some barriers to entry, the userbase is mostly focused on gaming, while Apple still needs developers to create apps for them.
Isnt even out yet it will kill nothing
I totally agree. I don’t believe the Apple vision pro will at all kill the quest/meta headset. They both focus on the areas they wish to do. I mean, Apple has gaming apps but it isn’t trying to replace what PS and Xbox do. They will both have their areas of focus even if they can do a little bit of both and it makes sense that Apple tech isn’t devoted entirely to immersive high-end gaming. Not to mention the price after all, even if Apple VR/AR headsets do go down in price. I for one absolute love my quest 2 headset and I can definitely picture myself buying quest three over the vision pro right now.
The Quest Pro was discontinued lol
I think the visions actually are very similar, its their strategy of getting there that is different. Both Zuck and Cook just want a sleek spatial computer that can do everything, but apple is going for the absolute premium experience that doesnt compromise on user experience and is willing to sacrifice affordability and time to reach that, while Zuckerberg seems to believe that his best shot is to gradually develop the product together with the users while keeping it affordable to get it in as many hands and as early as possible. Interesting to see how it will play out. I think its reasonable to expect that at least for the short term they are either BOTH successful with it or are both unlucky
No, it's fair. No one gives a fuck about meta quest.
lol Tim Cook is hugely empathetic… That’s why he ordered those Chinese factories to put up suicide nets, catch those workers and get them back to work!😂
Bro didn't answer when confronted by the press
true, he's thinking of the clean up crew
Foxconn and other manufacturers did that not Apple
@@Matt-pi2vc apple is the customer of Foxconn. Everything they do is directed by apple.
It's crucial that they get the marketing on this right 👍🏻🎉
I think Apple has enough brand power that they really need to just focus on the product and word of mouth will suffice.
@@slouischarlesYT their product is pretty good but what they dont is people who spread bad info about their product so they announce this in a way that will twist anything wrong with their product into something that sounds good. for example for people who use regular iphone the a15 chip was more than enough power so even if it had a next gen chip it wouldnt bring more people to buy it so they kept that old chip but eh way they worded it made it sound like its powerful enough and anyone who didnt watch a critic vid about iphone would think its fine
Incredible video, my man. Appreciate the hard work and research you do. Do not stop.
your videos are amazing sometimes i watch more than once, great story telling 👏
Great video. The other key thing that I give Tim Cook credit for is focusing on data security and user privacy. He’s fought against government back doors into data and made brave decisions to give the users a choice if the apps track them across platforms. Instead of trying to monetize user data collection he understands that it’s more important to have user trust if you’re gathering sensitive user information (i.e. health data). This will be critical for the success of the Vision Pro and they noted it in the announcement. They explicitly mentioned that they aren’t collecting data about where the user is looking but only the functional events (button clicks). If they’re doing retinal scans, I expect that they’ll be able to gather a lot more health data than the Apple Watch. Meta can’t gain that trust just by changing their name.
Even if there is an unspoken use of your data for Apple ecosystem promotion, they at least keep it in the ecosystem and contained to your person.
Or at least that’s what I hope
@@bobcake8904 people are really naïve thinking that is the reason, is Just PR.

John you make the best deep dive videos of any creator on youtube. Keep up the good work! 👍🏻 I also enjoyed the sci-fi references at 23:06. I’m familiar with all except Pygmalion’s Spectacles. I look forward to reading it! 📖
Coincidentally, I just watched the Black Mirror episode “The Entire History of You” last night. I’m optimistic about the future, but that dystopian depiction certainly gave me pause! 😅
Tim ain't no engineer. He was a logistics guy/ operations guy. This project I believe was in response to Meta's billion dollar investment in VR after the Occulus Quest acquisition. If you see what Palmer Lackey is working on, after leaving Occulus, you realize that was on to something big. Apple just closed the gap of VR headset to AR which they championed for years....People kept missing the point that Vision Pro device is a full computer inside. A Mac M2 laptop inside the headset. Not a dinky Qualcomm SoC.....
Least the Quest 3 will be affordable, as well you can buy quest 3 for roughly $500 and then spend $3000 on a monster pc build. Equivalent cost to just 1 Apple VR headset.
Google "industrial engineering"
The iPhone 15 Pro records 3D video just as you said which fixes the issue. It makes so much sense to film 3D videos on your camera removing the awkwardness, and only using the Vision Pro to watch these videos in your own time to relive those memories. That is AWESOME in my opinion.
Fabulous analysis and opinion piece. Thanks. My take is that we are witnessing the dawn of spatial computing, of which the Vision Pro is but a part!
Tim Cook has always been a fitness focused person, and it's really the way that Apple Watch eventually went. I love my watch, but fitness and the ability to measure my certain vitals is really why I own an Apple Watch - especially after it became evident during the pandemic that Covid presented a strange anomaly that people would have blood oxygen levels of below 90% and still be consciousness. When Apple introduced an blood oxygen sensor on Series 6, it made my Apple Watch even more important to me and that sensor is extremely accurate. As someone living with Type 2 diabetes, it would also be interesting to me to see where Apple goes with a blood sugar measurement sensor when the technology is there and Apple doesn't have to go through FDA (or any other country's equivalent of the FDA) for regulatory approval. To be honest, I find Apple Watch to be Apple's most "ethical" device, because it is so personal and the reason why my more expensive analagoue watches have been gathering dust since I got my first Apple Watch. Use case is important, because Apple wasn't sure which way Apple Watch was going to go, too, until customers determinded this. I think the same thing will happen with Vision Pro, even though it's expensive and (once again) Apple had to patent the heck out of it, it has amazing hardware, but software in the form of visionOS has to be integrated tightly with VisionOS's hardware. Apple has disrupted, (re)invented or reimagined many industries since the iPod and iTunes and the ability to purchase music, basically disrupting the music distribution industry. Steve Jobs wasn't really in favour of an AppStore but was eventually convinced of the importance of an AppStore in terms of bringing more software innovation to iPhone and iPad. Intel couldn't really innovate anymore because they were so stubborn in not wanting to outsource manufacturing to third party foundries. Mac innovation floundered for years but secretly Apple was working towards introducing RISC computing to a PC, which they eventually did in the form of Apple Silicon. What I do think is that Apple is going to disrupt the battery manufacturing industry next. Appel has such a relentless focus on battery optimization for all of their devices and getting two hours of use from the Vision Pro's battery is a joke, and Apple already knows this. Sure, the upcoming 3nm M3 and A17 SOCs (finally) will bring power saving and battery savings returns for Apple devices, but the world is still using battery tech from the 1990s, based on battery chemistry that was first developed more than 100 years ago - where to from lithium ion? Apple has its vast cash reserves to tap into to change the world forever in a world that has increasingly gone mobile, the computing power is there, but ability to power that computing power is not.
Great comment thank you. Super cool to see how the community gets involved to help build the base of understanding and develop the ideas for what can be possible with these great tools
But why don't they make their watches like Fitbit, now owned by Google - the battery lasts a full week on those devices. My daughter has an Apple watch that she used for a couple of weeks but just got bored having to charge it all the time, while my wife and I have both Fitbit devices and use them daily and even at night to log sleep patterns. My daughter used to complain that her Apple Watch didnt have enough power to last through a full day and the night even. You see with the new Vision Pro, Apple is doing the same mistake by having a separate battery pack on a wire that only lasts 2 hours while Quest devices last for longer even with the built in battery pack in the front of the device, with the extra battery pack on the back it lasts for double that time. Furthermore it's not locked to Meta hardware as you can use any 3. party device for this some that even allow hot swapping of battery packs, something I doubt Apple will allow with their Vision Pro.
Apple has already revolutionized the battery industry in the past. It was for the MBP. True it’s not chemically speaking, but how to optimized space and use case…

Thanks, John! I've been waiting for your take on this. Always insightful
First Next Big Thing the CEO wouldn't use. No pics of him wearing the headset. He thought it would make him look stupid. They were tempted to scrap it just va few months ago.
Anyways, since they rebranded Metaverse as Spatial computing and making people want it but can't afford it. Suddenly the price of Quest 3 looks like a bargain at $500. Since it does most of what Vision can do (though public were not aware until now) plus play games and come out this year. The Quest 3 was expected to sell only 2 million during Christmas time but now it looks like it will match if not exceed the much lower priced Quest 2 sales. That had 4 million sold in the first few months and over 10 million in one year.
Meta says, "Thanks Apple"
What login is he taking about? Even payment doesn't need a code. When did this guy last use the Quest?
Pricing for Vision makes sense when comparing it to a big screen tv that no one sitting next to you can watch. Is this guy getting paid by Apple?
Anyways, this was very funny to watch.
Maybe he is
Man I love being right
After watching this video I've realized that Tim Cook is a genius 🎉❤
And also gay
I learn a lot from every single video of yours. Thank you so much!!
This is an amazing video thanks for making it. I'm really interested in seeing the thing that you can only do on VPro.
This is fantastic content. I honestly never knew much about Cook. I never fully realized his full value and influence. I always kinda looked at him as just a figurehead and I mean no offense by that. And neither here nor there but, I didn’t even know he was gay. Lots of very cool information in this video and I’ve gained a whole new respect for the man. Thanks for making this for us.
Apple didn't kill the Meta Quest, but that's how it boosted Quest sales!
Apple is bringing VR/AR to the world, and it will be a desire for many, but when facing the price point, which headset do you think the majority of non-Apple users will buy?
I don't think they'll ever take off for the masses. People don't want to wear headsets for hours on end. People didn't even like wearing 3D glasses. It will have a market of course, but I can't see it replacing the conventional computer or smartphone. The humble computer mouse has been around since 1973, and it is still with us, because it is still the best way to navigate a computer. (Even with touchscreens).
@@Jaden378 And yet people are still buying chunky desktops at exorbitant prices.
Don't get me wrong the vision pro is spiffy as hell but at the end of the day a phone with a couple of shitty plastic lenses and a cardboard box does the job VR/AR is going to remain an expensive entertainment gimmick because at the end of the day that's what it is...
@@moomin7461It shows your incompetence to compare a simple accessory device to a computer that attaches to your head, with Apple’s trajectory of improving the technology over the years the vision will get smaller and smaller becoming eventually more comfortable than a smartphone, it’s natural tech evolution we’ve seen this before with the iPhone multi touch system.
I don't think price will be an issue. Most people buy stuff on credit (at least in the West). I also don't think Apple cares if non-apple fans will buy . Lol at the sales of the iPhone in a world where Android dominates the market in numbers. Also, with the pro moniker, they clearly are not targeting the average consumer. It's the experience that'll make or break it. It's the innovative apps that will be built for it that'll define whether it's a flop or a viable way of computing.
None. Like most apple products, they will wait until used Vision pros hit the marketplace. And most would be fine to wait until then.
Great in-depth insightts into Tim Cook and Apple dev of Vision Pro! Well done!
While Cook did bring about the Apple Vision Pro, the jury is still out on whether it is indeed Cook's iPhone moment.
I just started watching the video and just wanted to say that One of Apples biggest accomplishments is also the reason it gets criticized so much. Every time they release a new product, people want it to completely change their life. I don’t care how much a person hate Apple, their aren’t many companies now or ever that had/have that type of pressure on them!
Wow, very well made, from the breadth to the depth of the discussion. Love your work, bro. Well done!
an amazing experience watching this well planned video
What a video man. Thoroughly entertained and learnt a lot tooo
The vision pro will not kill the quest at 3500$ is simply to much to achieve the market penetration they would need. even in the so called "PRO" market apples hostility towards other vendors will help to prevent adoption.
i mean yeah but the first iphone was multiple times the price of other popular phones, i think more people will buy it than expected
@@georgeelgar5986 your talking in the hundreds of dollars range quite a ways away from this. 400 vs 3500 is different then 200 vs 600
Wow, what a great history lesson about Apple, I worked in the Electronic Manufacturing with Beckman, Fairchild, Memorex, Shugate Associates, Video Seven and Applied Materials. Working with manufacturing companies in Japan, Taiwan, Canada, England, France, and Germany. So what Cooks has accomplished is amazing! Apple, was always out of my reach, because I wasn’t Stanford Engineer.

Apple is not currently in real competition with Meta in VR, price difference is huge.

Don't forget about all of the actual engineers and designers that actually 'built' the apple vision
I'm impressed that Tim Cook got yelled at by Steve Job only for donating his liver. That shows how professional Tim Cook is to Steve Job.
Great research and video.
I saw an interesting take that Tim Cook did not have the same excitement as he did when announcing a new Apple Watch. Specifically, it's kind of weird that he never wore the device nor could you find a pic of him wearing it.
Yes, there are plenty of us tech nerds that will pony up the cash. But this in no way is going to kill off the Meta Quest or replace big screen TVs. Most big screens today are less than $3500 and support more than one viewer at a time. The lack of gaming support in the decision of no controllers is also a mistake in my opinion. I understand some cool games will come from hand tracking. But not in a way that will disrupt VR gaming headsets.
OTP feature has been available on Android for years and nothing new on the iPhone.
But people like you make it sound something new and great.
Great video John! The photo at 9:40 with Google Glass appears to be doctored. The angles are off, and while shadow of the frame of the glasses fall on his face, there is no shadow from the Google Glass part. Also, the resolutions and light intensities mismatch :-)

"Killed" is too strong word. Apple's 3500$ VR attempt not even dented Quest sales.
I am just really excited to see what the future holds
7:11 "in 2011 tragedy struck [...] Steve Jobs was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer"
He was diagnosed in 2003. He had a liver transplant in 2009. He had been frail for years and people could see things were serious. You make it sound like 2011 it happened suddenly.
Fewer episodes, better researched is my advice.
Do you think the first Vision Pro will maintain feature parity with the new cheaper headsets for long enough to warrant the price? Or is the new version going to have a new feature that won’t come to the first one?
The VR wars are just getting started now that Apple have entered the ring. Really need to see some modern VR classics running on the vision Pro that have you standing up and moving around.

One of the most underrated channels on RUclips
What an amazing overview. So much didn’t know about Tim Cook and his vision over the last decade. Incredibly well put together and presented.
I simply want to create a work space in VR that replaces my duel screen monitors and design with Adobe products in the space. I also want to be able to talk to people remotely but feel like they are in the same room. Games I care nothing about really. Oh, and I want to be able to watch movies with my family all in the same room but we all live in other parts of the country.
I know they say to wait till the second generation projects, but I'm hyped for this. I'm an original Dev Kit Oculus backer. This will have issues I'm sure when it starts but it is the next step.
Oh, boy... Well, this video hasn't aged very well, now that all the reviews are out.
Just fyi, jobs got cancer in 2003. He lived almost 10 years. He left Apple in Tim Cook’s hands once before finally stepping down just before the iPhone 4 release.
That all being said, great video as always.
Apple never killed the quest. Even the contrary. It only made it much more attractive.
My favorite analyst heads up John you are the best
Apple's Vision Pro is def a tinker toy. It's for us misfits who love technology and that once we can bring the technology down to something more socially acceptable it'll stay that way. But! Here's the cool part. It means it gives us developers so much time to dream up and build incredible experiences which is honestly more I could ask for vs AI...
Spending more than the average monthly income in the richest nation on earth on tinker toy... how privileged.
@@skp8748As an African-American artist, (born in 1954) I spent most of my life being unable to exhibit my work in a SINGLE gallery. Well, I just subscribed. Never knew about the Pygmalion glasses, something to look up. Another, story to checkout is "The Machine Stops" about a waking up from a Metaverse/Matrix. Was written in 1909 by E.M.Forester -- the same author who wrote "A Room with a View" -(so many potential puns here)
This was very well produced
Steve Jobs famously didn’t think the NeXT was too expensive either. But things like don’t break out of the market niche of only being accessible to the 1%. If Meta Quest is $300 and “almost as good” while Vision Pro is twelve times that, it’s obvious which one I would ever consider saving up for.
22:00 “Apple will probably add 3d video recording to a future version of the iPhone” this remark aged like fine wine
It's a story of Tim Cook, about his journey from a small town in Alabama to how he perfected the art of screwing over his loyal customers once he became CEO.
Correction the meta quest is a consumer device for gamers while the vision pro is for rich people to flex
I love how MKBHD just happens to sneak into a competition's videos. Like "big bro checking on you"😂
great video keep it up
One movie reference that comes to mind about VR is a movie from 1995 called "Strange Days". What this movie represents is the ultimate goal for all VR manufacturers. And yes. I love that movie Strange Days 1995.
$3500? Not until computer syncs bluetooth to the brain
In terms of a work environment the vision pro is way "better" (still looks ridiculous but whatever) in terms of gaming the Quest unrivaled, and gaming is not a field Apple will probably dive in to as much, so not entirely "dead" imo
The Vision Pro will not become a massive hit unless Apple starts developing and securing AAA content for the headset. This will a very expensive and risky path for Apple.
This was really interesting!
Your story telling ability is top notch-
One thing I think needs correcting - Apple has been buying companies since forever, the most famous of course being NeXT. They have always tended to buy small companies in tiny niches and then integrated them into the larger Apple ecosystem.
IMO I don't see VR/AR ever taking off as anything more then a niche thing for a tiny gaming community. 2D graphics are still alive and kicking despite 3D graphics, and the 3D TV died a while ago. VR is only seeing so much hype because it's finally gotten cheap enough to be affordable for the masses in recent years.
Since 2016 I haven't been able to play a flat screen game. Why would I want to control a charcter through a window when I can be in the world? VR is inevitable. I am old enough to remember the video game crash of 1982 and how the fad had come to an end. It ended because all games seemed the same and there was no Innovation. That's what's happening now. Eventually they will start porting over their AAA titles and having VR versions will become more common as user base grows and technology advances. That's why we are in 2023 and VR still hasn't died despite all declarations. You compare to the past 3D tv while I compare to the future holodeck. It's a matter of imagination and perspective.
Vision pro just shows how what will VR wi'll become in the future and great video man :]
This was so good
I would argue that Tim didn't make all those revenues and stuff. It was a result of Jobs' hard work the prior decade.
I am hoping that the Apple Vision Pro device will replace my monitors during my working hours. It's pricing isn't that bad when you compare it to three high quality monitors.
I don't plan to wear it around the house during my personal time.
Don't forget Wozniak. Without Wozniak Apple would of gone bankrupt as it was his Apple 2 that kept them afloat. Too many people ignore Steve Wozniak.
Think sports and particular football/hockey would be epic for this headset. Imaging players having small camera in their helmets and being able to watch each play through a different players point of view. Watch how the QB sees the field. Then a receiver. Then a defensive player. Would be sick.
One might say Tim is too good at his job. Apple has never been more cuththroat, money hungry and anti consumer than ever.
apple provides more price options than ever before
My Dumbahh, " Dam Steve Jobs Use To Look like Aston Kutcher " 😂
Awesome video, its crazy how much of what he did with the supply chain was basic commonsense. Growing up in a middle class house, he really brought the everyday person common sense to a out of touch elites.
The other thing I will never understand why people say that Apple's production on products are so integrated. Everyone's is, everyone tells their partners what to build. Vertical integration is what people describe when they talk about it, and apple isn't vertically ingerated. Really the only tech manufacturing company in the world who is vertically integrated is Samsung; screens, SoC, memory, shipping, advertising, caps, ect.. Intel was,, but they have started backing out. Apple HAS paid enough to get 3rd parties to build facilities dedicated to their products.
I for the first time EVER excited to see Apple get into a market category. I think though, that Apple may have jumped early on timing, like Google Glass. There is too much competition and not enough capacity in the advanced lens manufacturing. Then there is the battery problem, like SO SO much other tech, battery manufacturers are going to have to come to some consensus on the next battery type/chemistry. Until we can get denser, safer an lighter batteries headsets like so much other tech is going to be rather hamstringed. Or rather at least tied to our hamstring pocket.
AAA or even AA VR games will never take off on the Apple Vision Pro unless they release actual VR controllers with thumbsticks. Otherwise, you'll be stuck inside one room the entire time playing.
Especially as Unreal Development is still more or less banned. AAA and Unity is not possible
Great video John. Really inspiring.
How the hell did I not discover this channel earlier!!!! Awesome content!
Apple’s Vision Pro did not kill the Meta Quest at all. Vision Pro is not a VR headset but rather an AR one, you can't do a full VR experience with it and it was designed to be used from a couch. As a Quest 2 owner and an Apple fanboy, I'm not dumb to spend 3 Grands on a lack full product.
What is this noise about needing different passwords for Facebook, instagram, oculus, meta, and meta quest???? Who else has the same experience as John Coogan? I never had problems with passwords or signing into accounts 🤷♂️
And that's my friend, is how Ferrari killed Honda.
I would argue that the Vision Pro is the only thing Tim will be known for. Apple Silicon SoC are BLOWING the competition out of the water. They are killing it with the M1 devices. Pretty sure that was also under Tim. He may actually be a better ceo than jobs was.
Vision Pro flopped and Samsung surpassed Apple is smart phone sales.
Bringing Bob Igor out on stage is not aging well. He's one of the most hated people in Hollywood right now (unless you're a fat cat ceo like him)
