I make my own bookmarks ( textbook size ) out of paper and having virtually no thickness do not damage to the bindings of my books.

I just remember the book number for my Bible or, just start over if it's been long enough. I also sammich the book mark at the edge of the book like he described and thought most people did that anyway. I'm now leaning toward journaling the page number on the inner book cover if the book is owned and book mark if borrowed.
