This is amazing and love that you live in Colorado as well! You and Kevin Erickson should collaborate on something, he does the most amazing electric conversions in commerce city!
Man, back in 2004 when I first heard about 3d printing, and got a little printed sample from some company selling FDM printers for like 25 grand, this was the first thing that came to my mind. Using it to print body panels, and then skinning them in carbonfiber. It's so awesome to see someone actually doing that!
I noticed that the CAD program was briefly shown and saw that it is Solidworks. I hardly hear it mentioned when talking about 3D printing, but I will see it occasionally in videos like this. Would like to have it mentioned so it can be known as an option. Admittedly the professional version is a bit price prohibitive (expensive!) but there is a hobbyist version that is very affordable. CAD is subjective; use what works best for you, your team and your project. I only mention this because I have tried quite a few CAD programs and felt most comfortable in Solidworks, but definitely shop around and keep your options open.
I missed seeing the Lambo since I couldn't make to this year's RMRRF, but awesome to see people sign it. And now... a McLaren. I'm just imagining neighbors driving around and there's just one how with a Lambo, McLaren, etc. sitting out front... glad you're thinking heat and structure through. I've tried to explain this to family and they look at me like "how is this street legal?"
Due to the numbers of McLarens that end up like this, one can only assume that it's now the defacto platform for Mustang drivers to upgrade to after they win the lottery, Jokes aside, with the means and the skills, these are a great way to leverage laser scanning and obsessive printing regimes to makes dynamically restyled cars relatively cheaply. Definitely a viable route to getting into automotive design that could birth a future Pagani or Enzo. 👌 Add: Not that you can't 3D print the majority of a car body and internal parts (obviously, it's why we're here), but another route in the same camp is to use carving foam on a CNC machine; some of the 30x40 machines can be had for midrange printer money these days and afford a very generous workpiece size. The real benefit is in using more sturdy materials that take to molding well with composites/tool gel when scaling to sizable panels, and with a clever operator, cheaper feedstock. Or as said, CNC foam blocks directly which you can use with compatible resins and leave in place as foam-core composites.
Awesome! I'm getting to body build soon on my Time Attack race car, i'll make sure to to check Sterling's videos out. Always planned to print the car body, just not sure if using as core OR just molds
There's a biohazard sticker on it in one of the photos. Leads me to believe someone was seriously hurt in that car. I don't know how I would feel about using that car if someone was killed in it
Amazing, no really amazing - he makes it all look so straight-forward but I know that it is not, a huge amount of commitment, vision, talent, knowledge, confidence and more than a few dollars as well I expect to make this all happen. All power to him, can't wait to see the final result 🙂 Wonder what I can do with my Qidi X-Plus, I have already printed parts for my Electric Unicycles (EUC's) - almost the same 🙂

Are you scanning the area on the McLaren before making your piece to make them fit better the first time? I’m surprised Creality is helping you like that! I bought a Creality halot and the lcd separated so the machine died after 3 weeks of use. Creality wouldn’t honor their warranty and said it was the shippers problem… but I had been using it for 3 weeks… pissed me off so much I’ll never buy anything Creality ever again.. I switched to elegoo. (Large format resin printer).
As cool as this is, there is no way this is structurally safe. This is like when you see these videos of Russians fixed completely luxury cars with a bent frame, they recover the looks but the mechanical properties are long gone. I really hope he doesn't ever have an accident, because that won't be pretty. Not to mention the dynamic properties of the car, it will have asymetric stiffness and weight...
@@nebuchadnezzar47 strange, I remember exactly the conversation around the door latches and everything just like this video. same issue on the lambo I guess as with all car doors, always a pain to fit on lol
You can easily find a CAD file of these Mc Laren....Most of the file used in video games are from the original CAD of the car...just translated in a mesh 3D
Thanks again David and Joel for coming by! These are some of my favorite memories with these cars, you guys rock!🤟

Fantastic and been following sterlings process but the question is. Its it legal to drive on of the street?
@@dmanero It will be.

It was really great to meet you at the rep rep festival in Loveland, Joel. I really appreciate you taking the time to chat with me!
Love seeing the Lambo at RMRRF and love even more that there is even more awesomeness in the works with the McLaren! Great work Sterling!

I like how Sterling seems as comfortable on camera as Joel. Makes for a great interactive video.
I'm always impressed about the endless possibilities, that 3D printing gives us at hand! That's an amazing project 😎
Its great to see two big kids doing what they love and sharing a common love from 3DP.
Much love and keep building!

I like how the McLaren door works better than the Aventa...door. 😇
I can mp4-12c what you did there. Can you p1-lease stop with the puns?
@@Mitch3D I'm just here to McLaren all there is to know about 3D printing, and have pun along the way!

3D printing is great! But as you mention, CNC of any material (especially foam) is the way to go for this kind of work.
Two legends that makes such great radar par. Hope we can see more of them together in the future.

Hi! I’m the girl who gave you the Tardis at Reprap! It was SO SO cool to meet you! Your videos are so awesome!
HI!!!
I love that he scored that practically brand new engine for this project. That's gonna be so awesome once this bad boy is up and running.
It would be sick to get a hold of the files for this and the lambo. He's done amazing work.
Love it, needs to be more car enthusiasts that’s also into 3D Printing especially in the uk 👀👌🏻

this is why I'm going to 3D print myself a new planet so I'm not using anything anyone else might have before me. Lmao.

3d printing is so cooooooollllllll and actually I have a company in Iran and making 3d printer machines
Amazing. feels like yesterday the aventador video came out.
with the new Huge 3d printers coming out, this comes allot easier. tip to sterling, get a scale model of the car and scan it to get your shapes.
I got a question, since mostly the dimensions of the parts are kept by the Manufacturers, how did you managed to get or scan those missing parts out?
Really good models folks do on the internet.

Don't worry, he did!
Maybe I’m wrong but aren’t Spider version of cars reinforced ? Wouldn’t cutting the roof of a coupe one just completely kill the car integrity ?

Always a concern. I have kept the McLaren structure under the panels.
great video - is there a video on how you join your 3d printed parts together
Well..
I may be savvy enough to know that the automotive industry may be one of the 3DP movements biggest contributors..
🎉
Time to make your own 3D printed carbon tub.
Bring on the Open Source Cars. I'd buy a Prusa pickup truck. Lol
Great questions great video
dam now i want to make a Porsche
c8 drivetrain thing is gunna be faster than an actual 600lt
Crypto won't bring you lambo. 3D printing will if you'll spend enough time, it seems.
Remember when back in the days they said you wouldn't download a car....
That biohazard sticker..
Yep.
He should get an Elegoo Giga
Print the mold...not the parts....Fill the mold part of resin+fiber and you'll have a clean and lighter part ....
