It's been a week or so since Rihanna's Fenty skin launched. And as soon as the reviews were posted, the conversations about fragrance, sponsored skincare reviews, celebrity bias and even more controversial ingredients started.
Today i want to chat about what was most prevalent to me and what we can learn from the launch and reactions to Fenty skin.

    PLEASE READ:
This video isnt targeted at anyone. some of the comments have said im calling out people but i'm not...otherwise there would be names in this video! As most have said, i've admitted my biases in this video. But thats after listening and reading from a range of experts in the industry. Cross referencing their facts and opinions with others. And now I feel comfortable trusting the experts advice that I follow. I'm not saying, pick a side because the other side is shady as f*ck. What i'm saying from a consumer perspective, is when we have all these experts disagreeing on the same subject whilst both presenting evidence of the science behind what they believe to be true, its hard for us to know what the right answer is!
I am in no way 'calling out' any dermatologist or expert because that is of course not my place. I thought I was being clear by saying that these are the people we should be listening too and respecting their opinions.
I think something I said is being misinterpreted! I wasn’t comparing fragrance allergy to parabens. I was suggesting that both parabens and fragrance have the same amount of misinformation surrounding them and potential fear mongering.
Also, this isn’t throwing shade at anyone. I’m literally talking about how we should and need to respect everyone’s opinions!
This video isn’t exclusively about fragrance.
Please watch the video before expressing your views and opinions so we can understand each other and have a proper conversation ☺️❤️

Also I understand about people who doesn’t like it, but few of us likes it and use it in a beneficial way, that’s why is a wide market?

As a biochemist, I really appreciated that you addressed the fact that some people with no educational background in science try to invalidate individuals with several scientific degrees. It's really the most frustrating thing especially considering that the scientific terms and formats in published papers are usually not easily interpreted by someone unfamiliar with the field. There are just too many variables and limitations.

I like a little fragrance, it doesn't bother me at all. With that said, I'm not purchasing any Fenty skin, and I LOVE Rhianna. I have a set routine. I don't sway easily solely because it's new or by loved by an influencer. I research my skincare and will purchase based on need/replenishment.

Fragrance can be beneficial for those who want their skincare routine to be relaxing and calming. Skincare should be functional yes, but if your every day skincare ritual has more than functionality as its meaning for it then why not?
Fragrance is like dessert. You don't need it. Your body has absolutely no use for it, except the wonderful sweet taste. But that doesn't mean it's wrong to eat dessert. If your body is fine with eating dessert then you can have it. If your body doesn't process sugars well then don't have it.
And I'm saying this as someone whose skincare routine is majorly fragrance and essential oil free

Shivika Narang i agree it has mental health benefits but for actual skin, it doesn’t so it is still different to your example of niacinamide - that’s why i wish more products had fragrance free options for those who’d rather not risk it or don’t get any sensory benefits from it, so i agree but that’s why people are saying that, not because it literally has zero benefits (which it does for the skin itself, but outside that, there are some), love the example about dessert though, it’s very true!

James is literally everything a skincare “guru” or “influencer” should be. I love this channel. James is so right! Let the skincare experts and specialists break down the research for us. The targeted audience of papers published in journals is other experts in the field, not the general public so just listen to James’ thoughts in this video! It’s incredibly disrespectful for anyone who has not academically studied the field (any field for that matter) through some academic institution to in any way suggest that their (uneducated) opinion is fact and that all other stances (including those of experts!!) are wrong, let alone discount what the experts are saying! I’m sorry but is that your life’s work? Is that your specialization? Uh nope. That’s precisely how people start to wholeheartedly believe in things that have no valid supporting data. This is all not to say that experts are always right but they sure are a lot more likely to be right (regarding the topic) than most people reading this comment are. It’s like a layman calling out a physics PhD on being wrong about their conclusions in one of their peer-reviewed articles that is published in a reputable and well-known journal and claiming that they are wrong and you, the layman, are right and that somehow your opinion proves that they are wrong. Like how?? (This is coming from a proud member of the general public lol). Love the video!

Marie Marie I’m saying listen to him in this video in his thoughts regarding the experts and professionals I’m not saying to listen to take his skincare advice as fact and as what would work best for you (although I personally find his advice very applicable to me and my skin). I’m so happy he is discussing this and taking part in the conversation since awareness of the issues at hand is sometimes all it takes for someone to start looking into things and question things. We’ve gotta doubt things and people that may seem fishy to find the facts and whatever accepted knowledge and valid data there really is on the topic. We doubt for our safety as humans but when you start to doubt experts that simplify and clarify data that is above our specialization levels and start to believe the “facts” the unqualified are saying, misinformation is spread which can have horrible consequences. He is not an expert and he says that repeatedly (as many many other influencers should). I take his advice with caution but at the same time happen to agree with his opinions. I’m not saying to trust him about everything, I’m just saying listen to his bringing awareness to the issue in order to better form your own opinions on the situation. As with everything, you cannot just listen to one side of something and take that as fact. To make informed decisions and opinions you have to take all arguments into account. He did a great job of making this one.

It is frustrating to see those who have studied for literally years be attacked by people who have their knowledge from a reddit thread or google search. F.R. F So I do wanna say one thing. Yes, Kylie did get a lot of unnecessary hate when she released her line, but overall, I think Fenty Skin is better from an ingredient standpoint. Kylie Skin definitely isn’t a horrible brand, but I do feel as if her ingredients are comparable to a lot of drugstore products. I think the reason why people prefer Fenty Skin over Kylie Skin is because of the ingredients. Fenty contains fragrance and a lot of Kylie’s products contain fragrance, but Rihanna incorporated a lot of very innovative ingredients in her line and had creative ideas, while Kylie’s line wasn’t as innovative and a lot of the good ingredients it promoted ended up being very low on the ingredient list. People shouldn’t be biased because it’s Rihanna, but I think that’s why people like Fenty more overall. But I felt so bad for Kylie when her line was released, people were attacking her.

I found it so petty.

James, I just need to tell you this: thanks to you I tried to get my hands on a Korean sunscreen (not an easy task in Germany) and finally succeeded. My Purito Centella Green Level sunscreen arrived yesterday. I opted for the unscented version and I’m so grateful it exists because I am one of those whose skin reacts very angrily to fragrance. So I’ve been using it yesterday and today and MY GOD I’m blown away! This sunscreen is a total gamechanger for me. I have struggled forever with finding a sunscreen my very drama-queen-like skin would tolerate! I always broke out, had allergic reactions, burning and itching sensations and the greasy, sticky feeling drove me insane! But THIS one? OMG, it is EVERYTHING! So nice on the skin, so moisturizing, so not there when sunken in. I lovelovelove it and I found it thanks to you! Thank you so much! You changed my sunscreen life! 🌸

I posted this on Hyram's video and thought it might be useful for some people here as well. I’m a cosmetic product developer (not a marketer), and I have this much to say about fragrance in skincare. Often times, actually most of the times, fragrance are not added for the experiential aspect, but rather to keep the consumers compliant in the product usage. We often forget, the online skincare community bubble is only a tiny fraction of the overall skincare consumers, and for an average person who wants to buy a moisturiser, they’re simply more likely to keep up the proper usage of the product if it smells nice, believe me, I’ve been doing this for a long time. When you develop a product and runs a trial or a study, the results you get are heavily reliant on the proper usage (usually once or twice daily), so if you want to claim these results or benefits for the product, you need to develop the product in a way that ensures compliance, I know it might sound crazy to some of y’all but it’s actually the responsible thing to do from a product developer’s standpoint. Obv there’s also the element of positioning, Paula’s Choice is going to be all fragrance-free bc their whole schtick is “everything is bad for you and you need to avoid everything”, therefore the targeted consumer base is specific. Fenty’s targeted consumer base is a lot less niche so the products have to appeal to a much larger audience. As for the potential to develop an allergy to fragrance, well there’s a reason why we say “potential”, bc it’s only a possibility, a low one btw. You can “potentially” develop an allergy to almost ANYTHING, preservatives, penetration enhancers, ph adjusters, chelating agents, even surfactants, all of which serve important purposes in cosmetic products. It’s simply an inaccurate statement to say fragrance is somehow more dangerous than these ingredients, there is simply no data to support that. I’m not here to defend anyone or push fragranced products onto people, if you don’t like them for whatever reason, stay away, you have every right. I’m simply saying there is a lot more nuances to the debate on fragrance and its role in cosmetics.

My skin doesn’t care about fragrance, but my Fibromyalgia does - most scents will trigger nausea, migraines and sensory overload. I’ve not identified a specific ingredient, it seems to be more about the type of smell. I’m sometimes okay with subtle coconut or herbals but rose and white florals screw me up, and on a bad day the tiniest thing can be a trigger even when it was fine the day before. So I’m always glad when brands do fragrance free options.
I suspect part of what upsets many people is that they feel excluded by the brand. Especially when it’s something that can be related to larger medical issues for many people. Not considering the genuine needs (not just wants) of potential customers will inevitably look worse on a brand that’s big on inclusivity than on one that has never given a crap, simply because our expectations are higher.
Quite why you would be furious about *someone else* using something you can’t/choose not to use is beyond me. It’s like being angry that someone is eating Brussels sprouts, just because you think they’re green balls of yuck 🤢

I absolutely love watching James, and I do watch Hyram from time to time. And both of them have given me great tips to help me with my skin... But I think it is extremely important to remember that they BOTH are not licensed, certified or have any real education in skincare. And you should always verify the information being given with someone who is truly educated in skincare before taking it seriously. While I absolutely love that Hyram is making more people, especially young people, aware of the fact that they need to take good care of their skin now before it is too late, a lot of people also have put him up on this pedestal. And they take what he is saying as the end all be all when it is sometimes not correct, especially for people that don't have the same skin type as he does. For instance, I have really dry skin, so the majority of the products he likes, or doesn't like, because of how they effect his skin do the exact opposite for me. Again, I think he has been a huge blessing to the skincare community overall, but it is so important to do further research when it comes to your particular skincare.
Also, this does not just happen in skincare. It is especially bad in the makeup industry. There are RUclips and IG Beauty Gurus that teach makeup skills that are really only good for being in front of a camera and many still use filters. Then they claim the products they are using are doing what the filters are really doing. And they have millions of followers who swear by their techniques and the products they push, but then wonder why their makeup looks like total shit in real life. Than you have the real makeup artist (who are actually active and even do celebrity's makeup) who don't use crazy filters, don't show a million different products in one video just to try to sell them, and teach amazing skills that actually make your makeup look fantastic in real life and they don't have nearly as many followers.

I studied immunology for my degree and I can tell you that factually you can develop an intolerance to anything LITERALLY ANYTHING, any foods you eat, products you use on your skin/scalp/body etc, so that argument against fragrance is invalid. For example, you could eat tomatoes every single day and develop an intolerance to them after 50 years (so in that case, they have not harmed you in any way until the day your allergy develops), you could also eat tomatoes just once in your life and develop an intolerance to them. So by that “logic” we shouldn’t eat anything because we may develop an allergy to it! Fragrance works the same way on the skin. People with sensitive skin will of course have a higher chance of developing a fragrance allergy but people with normal skin need not worry :) edit: I don’t recommend you use products which contain any of the 26 proven fragrances to cause irritation (please google them) they are the fragrances you need to watch out for! Even if you have normal skin!

I think options is the key word here, I feel like we need more diversity in whats available for people. This goes beyond fragrance and looking at other irritants (acids in particular) and just making sure the market in general doesnt become oversaturated with only one style of product. It's like if every skincare brand only came out with products for dry skin, like people with oily skin wouldnt have options.
That being said I don't think brands should be ripped to shreds for including an irritating ingredient here and there. Im hoping when Rihanna extends the line, she will have options for different skin types and fragrance free options

I got absolutely reemed on Reddit for suggesting that people were allowed to change their minds when they learn new information regarding fragrance in skincare. I have very reactive skin, so I always avoided fragrance in everything and was definitely afraid of using it. But after learning more about it by a lot of skincare chemists on instagram like you mentioned, I have happily introduced some fragranced products in my body care and wash off products. Mostly, I'm just not as terrified of it as I was before. I think people want fragrance to be this smoking gun, like aha! this is what's wrong with my skin! These companies want to keep my skin in bad condition! So I keep buying products! But the reality is that removing fragrance from your skincare won't automatically fix your skin, and using products with fragrance won't immediately ruin your skin either.

Thank you for this. I recently graduated with a bachelors in Biotechnology and now am pursuing a PhD. A big issue in the science community is how to make the science accesible. • @mimoleta

I think people rely too much on science and doctors for a definite answer when in reality, it is an ever changing field. Nothing is completely set in stone but when it comes to health (and skincare), people are deathly scared about grey areas. What if your doctor tells you "I don't know" when the science behind it isn't 100% sure ? Doctors don't know what they don't know yet it would be devastating for some people.
Also, I think people rely too much on anecdotal evidence to support their claims because emotions are easier to comprehend than science. Had a bad reaction to a certain product or ingredient ? It's all bad and we should ban it. Someone you know had bad side effects from a medication and suddenly you'll be reluctant to take it.
I was on Accutane and I have experienced these polarizing thoughts first hand. People looking all scared for me, telling me how bad it is, someone they know were miserable on this drug, telling me I should explore another option etc... when for me, despite the bad side effects I experienced like arthritis in my ankles and keratitis to name a few, it was the best thing I have ever done for my skin and no amount of physical pain could top off the mental pain acne caused me.

    •  4 года назад

Priscillia the truth about Science is that nothing is “true”. In reality we are trying to find answers to many unanswered questions. I also agree with you. That’s why everything you hear and see should be taken into consideration but not be final. Also, there is always something new on the market and something that might work better if you just give it a chance. Like James mentioned in the video, you can take away what doesn’t work for you but it doesn’t mean that it won’t work for someone else.

Thank God it was against safety regs for fire hazards, etc., bc cubicles DO NOT contain the smell to a single work space and one person would have a tropical passion fruit thing going and 5 feet from them someone else had apple pie spice something 🤢. I had to lose my isht, but my manager found the safety/fire thing and we were saved! (I could tell he was not thrilled about having to battle with all us females over this. We were way out numbered) Anyhwhay, that's my story. Please note my BODY hates fragrance, not me personally, and I don't hate people that are lucky enough to enjoy it. But peeps, the struggle is real for those of us who can't tolerate fragrance (even if we wanted to.)🐾✖

I was really disappointed in most peoples reaction to Fenty Skin. Everyone tore apart Kylie Skin, but because people like Rhianna...
I know you have never completely said no to fragrance. But a lot of other youtubers have, and were hypocrites.

Most people were mad at the scrub instead of the fragrance, at least from what i saw. And there's definitely going to be some form of a bias, Kylie's kinda problematic, but fenty has always been known to be inclusive and setting the standard in the makeup industry, so idk why you're bringing up kylie.

C Hirons brought up a good point; one of the products likely had more fragrance in it because its ingredients list contained some smelllyyyy stuff. I suspect that the folks that "hate fragrance" (but are not allergic or sensitive to it) would be the first ones to smell an un-fragranced product and complain, "This smells like shit!"

My eczema will be triggered with fragrance so It’s a no no when a product contains fragrance 🙅🏻‍♀️
But I love Riri. If only my skin isn’t sensitive, i’m cool with using fragrance but I tried products with fragrance then my skin starts reacting 😭

I just think how curious it is that everybody is freaking out about fenty having fragrance in their products, but nobody says anything about Mario badescu putting steroids on their creams and "clean" brands like herbivore having their products recalled because of mold!!!!!!!! Parabens are not that bad, conservatives are for your safety!!!!!!

This can be applied to every other area of life. Do not only listen to the ones that agree with you, you need to hear opposing opinions, too! Otherwise there's the danger that people only interact in their same-minded bubbles and no real progression can be made because there is no dialogue.

One of my favourite things about you is you always make mention if there is fragrance. I know it’s a trendy thing at the moment. I genuinely have a fragrance sensitivity. My face will almost always turn reddish purple, so it’s important to know when I’m buying online. People truly to things way too personal when we talk about fragrance. They need to lighten up

I don’t think any dermatologist would say fragrance has any actual skin benefits whatsoever. It does somehow improve some people’s skin care experience. The problem with fragrance is it can develop sensitivity over time. The “paraben” analogy is not really the right one to be honest. No legit dermatologists ever rejected it.
