Despite all the abuse, all the warning lights blinking like crazy, it soldiers on. Undeterred. You just can't beat a Toyota. Incredible. Always a treat to see these. Thank you for sharing this one!
Fortunately in Canada, salty roads end most of these problems over time, LOL. I wish I could show you my '99 Tacoma, still runs, original clutch. First time this winter, I need to change the fuel filter.
I couldn't believe the amount of salt on the floor of my garage when I washed the car the other day. Swept it all up with a broom and ended up with quite a heap. Maybe not as much as what you would find in Canada, but more than I would like to see.
Overall vehicle condition aside, that is a quick and cheap repair. No parts required. The pins of the motor come unsoldered from the pins going to the connector. Remove actuator, remove cover, solder pins, reverse steps and refill diff. I repaired one of these on a Tacoma just a few weeks ago. In this case, even that cheap repair may exceed the value of the vehicle!
Hey Peter... thanks for sharing this one... I can’t imagine why would anyone treat a vehicle with such contempt.. I’m confused as to the “Why” if that 4 runner was human it probably would have retaliated by now
That Toyota isn't that bad, it just needs a little tender loving care. To start with four tires, probably the most expensive part, a couple of the oxygen sensors, oxygen sensors cause the VSC lights to go on; A front wheel drive actuator; check to make sure all of the lights work; a couple of Wheel speed sensors; simple things like that you can do it yourself and should be able to take care of all of this in a day assuming they have the parts available. Compared to many Toyotas that I've seen on the road that car is not that bad, it just needs tender loving care.
@@thedetective8150 ---- It probably won't be a huge amount of money. Near-ish (90 miles) to me is a good shop, South Main Auto, Eric there will diagnose a car's problems for his shop rate $80, tell a customer what needs to be done, customer orders the parts online (Eric tells them what parts need to be OEM, which can be generic) customer goes off and buys the parts for the best price, customer installs on their own. If there are problems Eric will fix it for his usual rate. There are a few fixes the average person would struggle with in their driveway, Eric lets them know to avoid those and have him or another shop do the repairs. The "Christmas tree" of warning lights... The mechanic's way of saying "Early Christmas! I'm going to make a ton of money fixing it!" 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Peter is not *that* guy though.
This is really educational. Thank you. I am looking to buy 5th generation Runner and rust proofing is going to be mandatory once I acquire the vehicle.
@Toyota Maintenance. Wow Professor Peter! The good thing is that with all the abuse that 4Runner has gone through, it still runs. I can see all the zip ties and duct tape holding bumpers, mirror, and other parts of the vehicle together. Yes, definitely used off road with no regards. Is that 4Runner tagged and registered for California? How can it possibly pass the emissions test? Hope you and your family stay safe and well.
My son has a 2007 4runner V6 and the 4x4 will not disengage. Both the green and yellow light are on but only the yellow light is blinking. Would this be the same issue with the front actuator needing replaced?
I'm just gonna guess it was a flood or crash write off, then was used for an off road only or farm toy like a Polaris RZR or something? Thanks for the entertainment Peter! 👍
Just subscribed Wow This is sad it really is. I have a 2006 4r with 286k and i off road it a lot but underneath there is not once of rust every summer i go underneath a car and treat it spend whole weekend on that and knock on wood there is not a single light on the dash. I love my truck. Its sad to see such a oterwise reliable vehicle being brought to its knees despite amazing Toyota reliability reputation
No Peter,,,, I don't imagine that the owner of this vehicle will have the $ to be able to pay for all of these things that are wrong with this truck. For someone to "ALLOW" they're vehicle to become such a mess ......... it's just horrible. Shows a lot about the "owner"> IN MY OPINION! Maybe begin, see what is wrong........ give a preliminary amount of what's wrong, and how MUCH...... but: That's "IT"! They'll say : BYE BYE!
Poor 4 Runner. She's a victim of her owners abuse and neglect. Sad to treat such a high quality truck this way. I don't know how this would pass CA inspection.
Wow, what a shame to see a Gen 4 4Runner like that. My 04 Highlander has way more miles and is still a great, solid, daily driver. If you can't expend the minimal energy required to care for a Toyota, get a bus pass.
I own a 2006 4Runner with 219,000 miles on it. But it's in much better shape. It's a great SUV and I intend to drive it forever. My major problem is that the transfer case actuator seal is leaking. Since the transfer case must be removed and disassembled to remove the actuator, I decided to top off the transfer case lube periodically.
I agree, You are correct to pass on this vehicle. It is very rough! I've seen better trucks sitting in a Salvage Yard. However, the owner may have been attempting to help you by bringing you a vehicle with most of the parts already removed! :)
11.7 is too low. I hope that the onboard estimator is off. Just getting it up to 15mpg allows you to go 25% further on a tankful. Or it could be that it is driven stop and go or at speeds of 75mph or so. A 2006 v6 4x4 does 19.5 running 55-60mph most of the time. However when I tow a trailer it is painfully bad at 9 mpg running at 60-65mph.
@@podamis314 I drive it like it’s stolen but the main problem is cracked headers. It’s running rich until I fix that, I’ll be putting Doug thorley performance headers on it soon.
Good condition truck, slight dents, $10000 or best offer, no low ballers, I know what I got 😂. This definitely was used for rock climbing and off road fun. I would walk away.
This is a major liability trap. Advise you to have the customer sign some sort of paper that shows you found this car to be unsafe for the road and in violation of emissions standards. I just bought what I thought was a beaten 2006 4runner. This makes me feel good about its high price.
Is this the first 4Runner you have worked on? If the check engine light comes on the whole dash will light up. Its like a scare tactic Toyota thought was a good idea. Glad to see owner using it as it was meant. Sorry to see you are afraid to work on something less than perfect.
The dash cover is not cracked and flaking off and the transfer case is not leaking past the shift rods. Which salvage yard is she going to? I feel like a hungry buzzard ready to pick some bones.
My guess is that it was stolen and then abused. Or used as a drug running vehicle across the border. I've had both happen. I think you are correct, time to part it out. I was surprised that the driver side seat did look to worn, a few good parts.
@@davidnull5590 I live and work in Toronto ..I have a 2006 4runner limited V8 i swear I would drive all that way for you to work on my car ..can you text me you shop information
Well, you were right, it was entertaining. Sad, but entertaining. Somebody, sometime drove this like it was in a war zone - maybe in the desert somewhere - and VERY hard. It would be good for demolition derby though....
Still running with every warning light on. I think you just made the best 4Runner commercial ever😀
IMMORTAL
Exactly Bubba, that's why Toyota is so cherished all over the world. It can take the abuse that few others can, and still work.
Dear Customers, When the value of the repair is likely to exceed the value of the car, full payment in advance is required.
That 4Runner is still worth 10k these days.

Exactly my thoughts. Frame isn't too bad though considering their propensity to rust.

That's right and this is the reason why I won't drive anything other than a Toyota. I have the same 4runner and it's a beast.
The explanation you provided was more valuable than the truck. Thank you sir!

"Oh the humanity!" But, that might make a good rock crawler project.
I wanna see this 4Runner making a glorious come back 😂
Me too!
It can be awesome again , stronger ,faster ,better with more traction .
The positive: it was dry underneath;
The negative: it does not look road worthy at all.
That thing was off roaded very hard and not taken care of. The zip ties holding parts on was hilarious.😂

I've seen salvage title vehicles in much better shape.
