I've built similar plates but I didn't have a milling machine to do the bolt circle. The plate on the lathe had threaded holes so I used set screws installed backwards to mark the drill location for one hole first to hold it in place before marking the last two.

Hi Mark, As has been said below, "nice work". I did similar at last weekend on my WM250 for an ER32 collet chuck, except I bought a backing plate from Warco that was already turned to fit the lathe register. Saved me a bit of work, but little did I know that the backplate was grey cast iron. NEVER AGAIN (if I can help it)! What a mess. It took three times as long to clear up the cast iron chips/graphite dust as it did to complete the turning. They got in everywhere. A chamfer in the register bore may help when fitting.
Having said that, the finished assembly was spot on with 0.006mm TIR.

Thanks for that, very useful. I have the same to do with a er32 chuck and cast iron blank from Warco with the same lathe. Had it for some years now so I better get on with it!

    Hi Mark
Just found your channel & subscribed, interesting videos, I have a Chester 9 20 lathe I've had 20yrs & Warco WM290V lathe had 4yrs ago, both m/c are now extensively modified when I bought them I was intending to do this, in fact spent most of my time making mods & tools for them, look forward to more of your videos, from Coventry 🇬🇧👍.

    4 tenths is pretty good!

Nice technique. Considering making one of these for mine. Would you say ER40 is a suitable size? I guess that gives you a lot of options on what it can hold.

ER40 suits the stuff I'm making for a 5" gauge steam loco and motorcycle restoration.

Pretty sure that backplate of the lathe is a short taper. Did you check that?

Hi Mark I have enjoyed your RUclips Warco WM250V Lathe: ER40 Collet Chuck Backing Plate
I would like to make one myself, but my calliper gauge (guessing stick) shows 51.96mm for the register ring which I do not trust to make a plug gauge as you did.
Can you tell me the OD dimension you made your gauge to and any other tricks you know to get it right. I will then buy a 50-75mm micrometre and get on with it.
    Thank you

      Hi Bernard,
I wouldn't keep a record of that sort of detail, so unless I call it out in the video, I won't be able to confirm. I did have a look to see if I could find the gauge that I used, but suspect I've since modified it for something else.
      Cheers
      Mark

@@markshomeengineering5243 Thanks Mark, I listened very carefully when you used the plug and heard no dimension. You did show the ID on the micro at 52.00mm and spelt it out!
You demonstrated a very good fit and to get that they cant both be 52.00mm.
I must touch and feel! I try to drive straight to the point via ISO 286.
In any event I enjoy your stuff so please keep it up.
      Have a pint on me.

Sorry Mark it was not you that Mic'd to 52 but David Cambridge on another RUclips. The issues/problems are all the same however.

hello Does anyone know if the Warco brand is the same as the Weiss brand from China? thank you very much to whoever answers

Why not clamp the er40 collet chuck using a 4 jaw chuck's outer jaws to line up flat and then use the 4 jaw chuck to make it run true ? best of both worlds

    • @ryebis
      @ryebis 3 года назад

@settle down Beavis fair point, but once you get a hang of it adjusting 4 jaw to run true takes a minute or two tops. You can use a 3 jaw chuck with a hex collet block and shims to make it run true - the advantage is you can quickly swap out the ER40 and use the 3 or 4 jaw chuck for other work without fiddling with the backplate.

I had the same thought - however with the length of the chuck stick out plus the length of the collet holder, the deflection made a lot more chatter than mounting on a faceplate. Maybe a newer lathe with tighter bearings wouldn’t make this a problem?
