- The KV-1B in War Thunder is a Finish Heavy Tank for the German Tech Tree. This absolute monster has been in the game for over 5 years and continues to plague low tiers.
With a combined armor value of 105mm it actually has thicker armour than a Tiger 1 on all sides and much less weakspots that can be exploited. All this at only battle rating 4.0!
The KV-1B is one of the most controversial vehicles in the game. With the gun only having 88mm of penetration, it does seem pretty weak. However, due to magic shells from the Nation we shall not mention... it can go through even the most angled of armor making for easy frags.
It is fun for some casual gameplay, though! :) So long as you're not on the receiving end!

We got the teaser for update 2.31 'Kings of Battle' today, and people are losing their minds. We're getting the F-111 Aardvark.
The under-cannon breech housings on Russian vehicles have been a magical void, where all projectiles simply disappear into the Aether, for as long as I have been playing this game. I have been playing for more than eight years now, and that issue has existed prior to my first experience with War Thunder.
If it was unintended it would've been fixed

you can have fun with low tier teammates. Just check around the maps and see where them explorers got themselves stuck at and drag 'em back out XD Especially Popular for Baby Seals is the edge of the Stalingrad Map where you can go down to the ice but not back up ^^
The reason this tank is so OP is that only 1 faction has multiple tanks that can reliably penetrate it at its tier- Germany. And this tank is ON Germany so only a tiny number of tanks really stand a chance.
Note: I said Germany is the only lineup with MULTIPLE tanks that can penetrate KV-1B levels of armor at its tier. Obviously other factions have 1 or 2 but that’s not multiple and it’s not enough to negate how strong this tank is.

Also Germany's 5.7 lineup got completely removed from the game, but apparently Panther A at 6.0 is still too op for some people, while the same people keep crying about how bad it was irl. Funny
They did this with many premium tanks. The didn't uptier the tiger1 p (up armored) i wouldn't call it Russia biases given the br the IS-2 is now. Unbelievable

1:09 I love how Gaijin argues that the gun on this isn't good enough to go higher, yet the jumbo, (a tank which has to shoot at the cupola of 80% of tanks it fights because it can't otherwise hurt them) gets up BR'd.
5.3 to me was the maximum, if we were gonna compare guns to their effectiveness. Now it has to fight a Tiger 2H, which it can barely do anything straight on to the side more or less.
Ofc its for the money, same with the vidar, same with uncountable other premiums.

SOOOOOO many people play games with TV speakers as their only audio, while other people make noise in the background.
They literally couldnt hear you because they dont have access to the same sensory inputs as you do.
Agreed, I played for a little over a year with absolutely no audio so I legitimately could not hear anything. No engine noise or the sound of the fab 5000 coming to rip me a new arsehole, it genuinely sucked
I sure do love gaijins logic with balancing, move up the tech tree kv1 and leave these 2 cause reasons
The reason is that Gaijin balance based solely on win rate, and Germany being the overwhelming majority of people's first nation loses an overwhelming amount of the time. Same reason France, Italy and Japan get shafted by BR changes. Extremely few new players are going to pick Japan or France for their first ground nation, so experienced players playing them more drag their winrate up.
The zis-5 one is pretty much strictly better than this one, my dude. This is only infamous because it's lower BR than it, it's just this including almost all the same extra armor, but with a better normal t34 gun instead of the weaker gun and a higher BR

@@tonedeaftachankagaming457 1) The gun upgrade makes a HUGE difference, 2) No you aren't trading armor, the turret is ironically about 10mm less in SOME places, the hull is almost identical. Zis 5 is, like the 1E, significantly up armored from a base KV-1

There is no excuse for this being 4.0 when the KV-1 zis-5 is now 4.7
I mean... the Zis-5 does have a slightly better gun. I'm annoyed that they moved it to 4.7 the the 85 to 5.0. Ruined my 4.7 lineup. The zis-5 is going to struggle to kill a lot of things it faces and it's armor isn't going to help in the near constant uptiers at that BR. The kv-85 definitely has no armor in comparison but the gun is much better and actually useable in uptiers.
Thing's ridiculous. The fact that it doesn't fight Germany is the biggest thing about it though. If this fought Germany the Pz4s would eat it alive. Not a lot of good guns on allies though. Sweden can blow it up pretty easy.

Yep. That’s the KV-1 way. You meet the Finnish one? Ignore it, it can’t kill you, and you can’t kill it.
But you can engage it into a slap fight and wait for a teammate to try and kill it. At least it won't be bothering anyone in a while, when you are slapping eachother on the cheeks.
@@antti6117 i had a match yesterday when i was brawling with a kv-2, in my kv-1s. his teammate sherman tried to help him but got smoked. then, i somehow killed the kv-2 despite my track being blown-off.

so the ZIS-5 is moving to 4.7 with worse armor, and basically the same gun, but this remains at the same BR as a Panzer 4....
btw if you see a KV-1S, just shoot the lower plate, it is 60mm instead of 75. even the americal 75mm can pen it when angled
With 'Girls und Panzer: Das Finale' Part IV coming out recently, I had a thought back one of the tanks that Oarai uses. The Type 3 Chi-Nu is one that nobody ever talks about, I'd love to see a video on it.
Considering that Nekonya has enough strength to toss a 75mm shell, and that Piyotan has enough strength to catch that 75mm shell one-handed, then load in into the cannon breech, all in the same motion.

in full support so i dont have to grind sweden's mid tier with STRV M/42 at 5.7
i also feel that it doesn't get nerfed because they would also have to nerf its twin brother the 1E. its the same tank but worst because it faces german 75's.
So does the German one since it fights Italy and Sweden often, I think the reason is just the gun

Let’s not forget the American 76 on the M10, M6a1/T1e1 and the 76 Sherman. I had no problems killing either the 1E or the 1B with the M10
@@CatsAreAmazing8187 German tanks doesn't fight swedish or Italian tanks nearly as often as russian tanks face german tanks. Its clear when you enter the que and see the number of players in each nation
Hey, Odd. I recently noticed Amx-13DCA got buffed and now had over 94 mms of pen on AP shells so it now can comfortably pen the side of the tiger I from a bit of a distance. That combined with a turret traverse buff really makes it a fun to use vehicle. I think you should check it out!

The Premium T-34/57 also stayed on its old BR, and with the Tigers and Panther gone up, that's another tank that can terrorize its bracket + there are some other strong backups on 4.7 to pick.
if i recall correctly, soviet shells were a pseudo-tandem shaped. what do i mean? the penetrator was indeed a single-piece, but it's shape had an hourglass-like aspect to it which made the front of the penetrator break off after making impact. this had the effect of digging into the sloped armor, thus providing the back of the penetrator with a vertical/flat armor to hit. all the while the back piece got to keep all of it's momentum and penetrating power.

If you wondered how to penetrate this thing and all the other KV-1's, look at its turret. See those tiny sharp corners of the turret? Shoot it here. You're not penetrating it anywhere else unless you're in something like a 76 Sherman or a Firefly. Shoot the low right corner of the turret that'll be inevitably facing your way to take out its gunner and loader so it cant shoot back. If you keep smacking that corner it'll eventually take out its entire crew, even works for French and British tanks!
If you cant pen that corner which some tanks cant, shoot its barrel or the area right above the gun mantlet, to take out the cannon breech. You dont want to shoot thick spaced turret cheeks, trust me
If you came on it from the side and you know that ready ammo racks are in the back of its turret, dont shoot it, theres an additional plate there. Shoot its normal turret side, not the sticking - out one
And dont shoot into its frontal sides, its a death sentence. Fuel tanks on KV-1's refuse to explode even when slapped by like 2 kilos of HE, it will just turn and vaporize you while you reload.
The KV-1's are a blatant example of Russian bias, you can kill them, but it takes way too much time and they're just weirdly survivable. Fuel tanks eat APHE shells, ammo racks refuse to explode, turret cheeks shatter rounds of any type, even if they pen. Gaijin really should fix those tanks, and not just the damn ZiS - 5.

Grinded this tank in 2015, best decision ever. Whenever I have a bad streak of matches I mow Shermans down with this thing and it always brings a smile to my face

That front lower plate you shot, idk if it relates to warthunder, but its a major weakness in world of tanks and my shermans are able to 1 tap from that angle, but you got to hit it dead center on the flat part for it to fully go thru, in the armor inspecter it wont show up as green but you can still pen it

I just got this out of opening a few boxes I had laying around from different expansions. Still have tons to open but every now and again I through 10 at some keys and open a few. mostly camos.
I just couldn't stop laughing at how other players kept trying to smack at your tank, but to no avail. And then you'd just smoke them. LMAO! That one guy just passed you by like, "Nope! No need to bother with that one!" LOL! Friggin' hilarious!

The only way to deal with a broken vehicle is with a broken mechanic, make the KV-1B a priority target when you take out CAS
I always focus the KV's in CAS, even the kv-1C of the Germans at 5.0 :D

i somehow got this thing from one of those crates where you have to buy a key and it is busted, i run it along with the brummbar and consistently get 10+ kill games mostly with it.
It's a good thing the additional armor isn't modeled correctly. The turret armor says 30mm, but the plates get significantly thicker towards the rear of the turret.
Now that's some good sportsmanship
This is the perfect tank for me bc I'm terrible in CQC and have a hard time spotting enemies, I need it.
Just had a 2min Duell with this tank against a normal KV-5 (Zis-5). Nobody could damage anything but trucks and once a gunbarrel. 88mm pen is just bad. Distance was between 100 and 5 meters.
That KV guy was like: Hmm, KW1B, nAAAAAAAh im gonna die elsewhere
The thing is with this tank, you need a bit of knowledge about weak spots and have to retrain yourself to aim for angled parts that a lot of shells will usually bounce off in order to make the gun work, and rely on a lack of knowledge on the part of the enemy to make the armour work. It's a bit harder with the KV-1E though because so many Panzer IV 75mm variants have been dropped in BR and they don't have so many issues getting through your armour.

Hi OddBawZ could you use the Kv-122 premium tank in the Russian tech tree that stayed at BR 5.3 but the Is-1 went up to 5.7
This is tank is my literal happy place. Not every tank should be miserable to play especially rare premiums so I'm happy they left the BR alone.

I've had my KV-1B for years. I love it. Just annoyed Gaijin inexplicably got rid of the Finnish Roundel. I had that on both sides of the turret.
I have a couple roundels on mine that are Finnish but may not be the proper ones.
Yeah I use the Hellenic roundel as a substitute. I think it is because Finns are in the Sweden tree and they are Allie’s while Finns were historically axis.
@krle7970 They werent axis by choice, they only joined forces with germany to take back their territory from the ussr.
They werent nazis or anything like that, they only wanted to push back the soviets. But i guess that counts as axis so maybe im just dumb lol

I don't know what Gaijin did to the game with the most recent updates but I had a round with a t34-57 where I could not pen a sherman firefly's upper front plate at 0degress pretty much from around 2-300meters,shot it 3 times,all bounced...So I was like,fok it :D

Question out of interest: What is the maximum amount of crew slots you can have in a lineup? Thought I‘d ask you as you (probably) have a press account and therefore unlimited GE(?). Had that thought pop up randomly, would love to know.
There's no such thing as a press account.
I think 12 is the maximum. Pretty P2W! :) Since you can only buy extra slots later on with GE.

I haven't played in a couple months, but when I would come against these (like you said every game) they were a nightmare. People playing these would easily get 10k+ games.
The vast majority of players with these are pretty experienced and know how to maximise their potential. You see them a lot more during events.
i love my KV-b1 but when your top dog its a little unfair on others. so i generally don't pick it from my line up much.
One good tactic for this tank is to angle, like the Tiger 1, well all I know is that it works for the Kv1E
If the jumbo was exclusively a premium vehicle it would probably still be 4.7 or 5.0

Wyvern has been under-BRed tho for a long time, that thing is FAST and that with 3 K pound bombs strapped under it

The churchil VII was a poor choice oz.
Any 55mm APHE can overmatch the turret outside of auto bounce angles.
It is the biggest weakpoint of the tank.
But the Church VII is also a great tank to compare.
It is slower, less well armoured (far more weakpoints even without the roof), the gun uses a solid AP slug with 0 angle pen (meaning the KV 1B gun is actually better in every case except for hits between 0 and 3° angles.)
The KV 1B and Churchil VII should switch BRs
I like it when heavies get to shield other vehicles. I wish the br's and matchmaking were less prejudiced against armour.

7:37 This is something I'd do/did. I get so much enjoyment out of doing shit like this, that to me it's worth doing. Years back I did this with another T28"Doom turtle" in AB. so we covered eachother and fired mg's where our teammates were flanking and both ended up with 13-15 kills. The salt was insane, the friendship was crazy but sadly I took a break and when I returned he never came back online.
kv-1s have the same weakness as a Sherman the machine Gunnar port is very light armor and typically a one shot kill
Honestly if they going to put this thing any higher than 4.3 in future it will be useless with that gun. Something like a jumbo with short 75mm is now

I tried counting the number of shots the KV-1B ate. There were so many multiple hit, I couldn't keep up after 12. On second review, I know there was at lest 20.
If you think, this is kinda similar to the Churchill VII but at 4.0
But faster and with a shell with explosive filler.

In my opinion 4.0 is this tanks safe haven it's got just enough armor to defend against some medium tanks/heavy tanks but glass cannons and tank destroyers can punch through its armor.
