  • How much does it cost to travel New Zealand? We were able to spend 45 days touring both islands for around $4,000 total! That’s less than $50 per person per day!
    In the video we breakdown the amount we spent on our car rental, groceries, fuel, campsites, eating out, cellphone, and miscellaneous costs. Additionally, we discuss where we feel like we could have saved money and where we wish we had spent more.

    ABOUT US:
    We’re traveling full time, living on our own terms and showing you the up-close-and-personal details of us figuring it out along the way. Sometimes it’s about navigating big, life-altering decisions. Sometimes it’s about navigating the seemingly lawless free-for-all that is driving in Hanoi. It’s moments of triumph and moments of panic. The good, the bad, the ugly - and most importantly, the real and real funny.
    We’re not here to tell you “how it’s done.” Just how we’ve done it. And that whatever it is that’s calling you - the way you’ll do it is much more attainable than it may seem. We believe the world’s a more interesting place when people reject convention in favor of what they actually care about. This is us putting that idea to the test - one budget spreadsheet, RV renovation and mountain-peak drone video at a time.

    New Zealand actually has some of the best internet in the world, with regards to UFB fibre optic networks, available to most households in the country. But publicly available free wifi sucks, I mean... it REALLY sucks, which is strange given the significance of our tourism industry.

    • @timandfin
      @timandfin  6 лет назад +6

      We've been corrected a few times now because we had no idea that REAL internet existed since we only dealt with public wifi. No idea why it's so drastic a difference! We'll have to make a video going around speedtesting internet at peoples houses....just knock on doors and ask if we can connect to their wifi. First business to let tourists park their vans/RVs and use unlimited fast internet for the duration of their stay is going to be booked through the whole year.

      April! Thanks for saying hi! You guys are stronger willed then us. We slept pretty poorly for the six weeks we were there....if we didn't keep our bellies filled one of us would have probably ended up buried in NZ! We were blown away by just how much there was to do for $0- truly, the best stuff there was free. Best hiking we've ever done.

      Heads up intrepid travellers , New Zealand country side is becoming covered in backpacker shit and toilet paper to the extent that kiwis have nicknamed these budget camper vans "Shit and Run Vans" they are literally everywhere, so if you want to travel New Zealand expect lots of shit and run vans and too many people at spectacular sites , New Zealand has literally been over sold to the tourists
      So if you come here please respect our country, thanks

    If you want more comfort for shorter time take upgraded camper that you can do anything in car right when you park until next morning without going out , especially when it rains
    As long you have a self contained camper

      We would have done self contained in a heart beat but the price was SO much more. It definitely opens up the amount of sites you can stay at if you have self contained but we couldn't justify the amount of money.

    Skinny Mobile, $20NZD ($12USD) for 7 days of unlimited internet, calls and txt. You can hotspot so only one needed per group. It's true, public internet is hard to come by. We are from NZ and were so shocked when we went to the USA and had wifi in a small grocer in New York. Public Libraries in NZ are a good place to get wifi.

    Do you have any video for activities tips? As you mentioned many activities in NZ are expensive, like the glacier tour, bungee, skydiving, and all the outdoor activities

    • @timandfin
      @timandfin  6 лет назад +1

      We should probably do a video of our favorite activities while there. Everything was just so incredibly expensive to do that even if we had the extra money it would have still been difficult to pay so much. The best things were free/inexpensive like any of the major hikes around the South Island, driving through and camping in the Sounds. In fact, just the act of finding our campsite each day and exploring the area around it became the activity. timandfintravel.com/best-new-zealand-day-hikes/

    • @jonobarnett4020
      @jonobarnett4020 6 лет назад

    • @timandfin
      @timandfin  6 лет назад +1

      It’s funny that so many tourists in NZ get a bad rap as “cheap” tourists. While there are really terrible campervanners who don’t pay park fees (and trash sites), NZ is home to some of the most incredible free stuff to do in the world.

    • @jonobarnett4020
      @jonobarnett4020 6 лет назад

      Definitely! I think there is a misconception that New Zealand will be a sort of resort destination that you can travel through in about a week. If you take that kind of atitude it will be super expensive, but it's how the country makes a lot of its money on people who are here for the activity experience. Really is good id you take a bit of time.

    Great video! My girlfriend and I are planning on going to New Zealand during the university break at the end of the year. • @timandfin
      @timandfin  6 лет назад +1

      The temp in the campervan was overall pretty good. We got heaps of free blankets that we washed up at WickedCamper. That being said, we did have a few nights on the south island that got COLD. We ended up warming the van up using the car heater to where it was like a sauna inside and then try REALLY hard to fall asleep before it got cold.

      Not a silly question- Everything is broken down into US dollars. Keepin mind that we're diving the daily cost by two since there were two of us splitting everything. So when we mean $45 USD/day, that mean that between both of us it was $90.

      Whoa! That either wasn’t on our contract or I didn’t notice it- it’s strange because there are a ton of gravel roads just getting to well known tourist spots even if you aren’t trying to get off the beaten path.

    • @ColbsterzSnowboarder

      TIM and FIN that's what I was confused about? And obviously several pictures they have on their website are people driving on gravel roads? Hmm. That's the one thing that threw me off. And the $3000 bond. Did y'all go with the Protection B Plan? Great videos btw. I just finished watching the hour and a half trip through New Zealand video! You guys are an inspiration! I'm about to go to New Zealand by myself but having someone special to share it with seems way cooler haha keep up the good work!

    • @timandfin
      @timandfin  6 лет назад +1

      Whoa! Glad you found the video without ads. I'm sure you'll have a blast by yourself....there are lot of tour buses that bring people around the island if you're looking to meet some other travelers. We were going to actually do that when we didn't hink we could afford to rent a van. I know that I ended up paying the bond and it was returned to me after damages were taken out. I think we skipped some of the insurance because our credit card covered us.

    i dont get the internet thing, im from New zealand and i live rurally in the south island and like my 4g is great and my broadband internet is fast enough, like i can stream 4k and stuff, I think its around 43down 5up. And on holidays that ive had i america and europe its almost impossible to find internet, or at least in my experience, the only advantage is that the mobile data is way cheaper in those places. But then again if you live in new zealand data can become cheapish because you get bonuses and free hotspots and crap.

    • @timandfin
      @timandfin  6 лет назад

      Hi Devlin! I hope we didn't misrepresent internet....i think our major frustration was wherever we found it it was pricey and limited. Lot's of places only gave away 100 mb's which isn't something you can really do much with. I think the major proof of the "visitor" experience with internet is how crammed with tourists all the libraries are. I mean, we weren't even there at peak tourism and I think every library was stacked up with campervanners any time we swung by.
      In the town outside of Milford, the library even had a separate room for all the people using wifi.
      When we tried to do an hours work from restaurants/coffee shops/ hotels, internet was too expensive for how limited it was. The four gigs we got on our mobile sim was on par with US prices, but trying to upload a video anywhere would have been difficult outside of using the library. Just wanted to explain where we were coming from!

    • @laurencefraser
      @laurencefraser 6 лет назад

      TIM and FIN the internet issue can at least partly be traced back to... Most New Zealanders have landline, broadband (often fiber these days) internet connections in their homes (often/usually at a flat rate for unlimited data, but if your usage is low you can get metered plans which are cheaper... Or could last I checked), and Those are mostly very good (and the routers have built in wifi) so there's less day to day demand for public internet access than you might expect, and the population is small to start with, so... Yeah. Right PitA for visitors, admittedly, but if you Live here, it's fine. Public access internet is... Highly variable... And yeah, mobile data is rubbish and stupidly expensive, though that's not strictly an NZ thing, to my understanding.

    • @timandfin
      @timandfin  6 лет назад +1

      Thanks for throwing some useful info about the ole' internets out here! Maybe next time we need to look into the Airbnb space and stay away from those campgrounds with the metered access. I think you nailed it with "public access internet is...highly variable..." After seeing what a crowded mess libraries are with visitors clamoring for internet, I'd be surprised if locals didn't dislike all the visitors that tourism brings in just a little bit...

Compared to the little data in Germany that you get for the same money per month, NZ is really cheap. You think connection on NZ was bad for the kiwi? Hey Troy! Yes- there is internet everywhere- whats different about NZ is 1.) The speeds we encountered were terribly slow and 2.) it was one of the few countries where data was given out in increments. For example, with purchase at a restaurant/campground guests only got 100mb of data. Most other countries don't limit you by quantity of data, rather by time.

But other than that the internet of the country is decent and I don't agree when you guys said nz wins the worst internet. We use 5GB internet so I guess that's pretty fast. But yeah just saying

    • @timandfin
      @timandfin  5 лет назад

      This was quite a few years ago Hassan. I've heard cell data is much better now and way more affordable. Something that I don't think is different is that wifi at businesses (cafes, restaurants, hotels) had a super small data cap. Most places in the US offer people unlimited internet. You can tell this was a major issue because the public libraries in NZ were absolutely swamped with tourists using the internet (us included)!

    New Zealand has the best 5g in the world, don’t know what are you talking about, I have Spark Vodafone sucks, and there are plenty places with free wifi, so many ppl here work as freelancers. Just the way you say it sounds typical US attitude. 🙄🤦🏽‍♀️

      Thanks for the helpful tips! We had a super tough time finding 5G signal in 2017 when we filmed this but thanks for gently correcting us.

      thats a very asshole comment so say about people from the states, why do you have to generalize? Just enjoy the content!

      Bullshit! We do mind and we object to ill-informed idiots coming here and making silly assumptions about us. Spend your money then fuck off back home :-) I particularly despise tight-arse Germans thinking that they're going to have a fantastic time trying hard not to spend a pfennig. Don't forget to wash every day or two if you're staying in public huts. It is not cheap but not like Switzerland. Shut the fuck up after 10 p.m. Internet isn't available everywhere as there are many isolated areas where no-one lives and which you may need to transit. Haast now has cell-phone coverage May2018..

      David you're a disgrace and everyone I apologize on behalf of him. Yes I'm a kiwi and you'll hardly find pricks like him. You can't camp anywhere as you may be fined by the local council. Welcome to our beautiful country
