- President Richard Nixon resigned from office on August 8, 1974. Moments before Nixon goes on TV to resign, he is calm and jokes with staff. Watch this moment in history from the CBS News film vault.
There's a terribly ominous sadness and loneliness about that steady angle shot of the White House at night.
He is clearly using jokes to try to deflect his feeling about it. During the serious moments he looks defeated. Humor can hide a lot.
Okay! Expert
"37th time"---RIP for the 37th president
Interesting coincidence.
Newt Gingrich?
37?!
The comments he made before the speech - more vintage Nixon.
Do past presidents actually haunt the white house??
I can’t believe they showed us the bloopers
@TERRENCE CASTONGUAY Oh hey it’s you! 👋😁
@TERRENCE CASTONGUAY Ik Ik I’m everywhere in RUclips! A lot of people know me and I get a lot of likes on my comments for some reason 😁👍
@TERRENCE CASTONGUAY How did you find me btw?
@TERRENCE CASTONGUAY Why did you change the subject? 😕
I'm not surprsied, this is basically a taped recording, and this occurs before it goes live on TV. It was scheduled to air live around the time he makes the announcement. Either way, this is something to consider, as I have used this sample in my DJ gig openings, as a way to remind people that it's been nearly 50 years since this resignation speech has occurred back in the day.
It's so strange to see someone so nonchalant and making jokes minutes before making such a significant speech in front of the whole world.
Probably was trying to not dwell on what he was about to say, so he joked to think of something, ANYTHING else until the light came on and he had to make the most humiliating speech of his life.
Dude is about to be the biggest scandal in white house history up until that point, and he's downright jovial. Fascinating.
interesting that he liked/likes the media and jokes with them--don't see that today.
@@robinorlowski9045 He definitely didn't like the media (as far as I can tell it was around the time that it started to become the mess that it is today - although I'm sure it was also decently better than the left-wing echo chamber and 95% negative reporting on Trump it is today) and he would keep certain news organizations out of and away from the white house.
Yeah, kinda like Hillary....."you mean wipe my server with a cloth"
@@MechaKnucklesThe press is designed to be free and fair to keep would be tyrants from having complete control of our republic. It’s true that Trump never was given a fair chance on running the country, but it would be foolish to assume the man was innocent from any wrongdoing.
Even in his darkest moments Nixon still showed the kind of dignity and integrity I expect from a President. Not like the petulant childish behaviour Trump shows. No insults, just explaining what was happening.
Trump's behavior is stupid at times, but he's a really good president. Awesome foreign policy, great work on the economy, and more.

I remember watching this live on television when I was 12.
Globo TV broadcasted the previous "relaxing" moment of the speech live to Brazil.
The original youtuber apology
They show you what you want/need to see. So you can forget what really went down which is also obscured. Fuck this world we live in FUCK IT !!!!
10:22 Therefore, I shall resign the presidency effective at noon tomorrow. Vice President Ford will be sworn in as President at that hour in this office.
Look I'm a democratic God rip GOD BLESS THIS MAN AND HE IS IN HEAVEN
He got what he deserved.....actually got off easy. One of the most corrupt presidents ever....up until Trump.
7:04 the speech start
*_"I shall resign the presidency, effective at noon tomorrow,"_** are words I'd LOVE to hear again from the White House within the next few weeks. 😉*
But I'll just say Kamala Harris is no Gerald Ford.
Given our very slimy and corrupt modern day politicians who think they are above the system and the law, especially those that have broken their own lockdown protocols for this current pandemic, I give President Nixon great credit for at least having enough integrity to leave his position of power. Suddenly Ford’s pardon of him makes a lot more sense now.
He could take responsibility, that is rare this days where many rich seem to be ignored/uneffected by the law.
Imagine watching this when it aired and being SO shocked when he announced he was resigning lol.
I remember watching it, I was 14 and we had no idea what he was going to say, all of us around the TV and my father being upset he voted for Nixon i of course being young had no idea of the impact, historical moment in time I was witnessing
I remember watching it and cheering! So glad he was going. He was totally unfit to be president,
@@alto606 I was too young to know the difference Thank goodness lol 😂
Louis C.K. does
Back then being a journalist meant integrity.
like reporting on the president's wrongdoings?
@@benschwartz9211 Studies show that Trump gets around 93% negative press..... That's obviously not fair, especially not for the type of president he is (an overall good one).
No. But they were very good at making others believe that integrity was present.
@@MechaKnuckles Absolutely true.
@@benschwartz9211 Nixon’s wrongdoings were written about.
Wow with no teleprompter that is almost impossible today
Nixon god I should do a long report on him. Of all Presidents they/who do a lot to smooth things over he just couldn't figure out how to smooth this over. His spot in history should be picked over with a fine tooth comb. There is good reason why Richard is not investigated it would lead to many many projects that should of been canceled and He had to deal with.
He was a great president nonetheless. Shame.
I remember watching this live when I was 18.
The Devils President.... but Gerald ford almost topped him....
Errr, Okay.....FORD was the #2 "Devil's President"?!? ....I'd have to be on a LOTTA drugs to get THAT one. EDIT: Oh, Okay! I see where you are coming from! I went to your "page" 1, You are NOT old enough to remember REAGAN, let alone Ford or Nixon. 2, You are a RACIST. 3 You HATE America, But still STAY (probably at TAXPAYER expense) 3, You are CLEARLY insane. (change my mind).
A downfall of a good leader
Good leader, where?
@@mrteezy3915 China...EPA....Social Security......
@@mrteezy3915Nixon was very popular. The cia forced him out. Nixon knew who killed kennedy
Who’s that?
I don't see why anyone would think he was a good leader. He was as corrupt as they come....except for Trump, who is way worse.
Nixon's was selfless and hopeful; Trump's will be defiant, abrasive, and dripping with hate.
@bill bixby You're here for the same reason we all are: The clear similarities between the Nixon and Trump presidencies.
You [randomly] brought Obama into this discussion because you don't want to admit it.
@bill bixby I'm not here to defend Obama; which you oddly insist upon bringing up.
You seem to believe Trump is somehow above reproach however - much like the man himself. It's that same hubris which is bringing down his presidency right before our eyes.
HAIL TRUMP!!! 🤚🤚🤚🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
HAIL OUR PEOPLE!!! 👌👌👌🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
HAIL VICTORY!!! 💪💪💪🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
What did Trump do wrong?
He knew if he didn't resign, he'd be impeached. Not exactly brave. He got a sweetheart deal from Ford....and that's why Ford did not get re-elected.
Imagine if Trump was this sensible and went ahead and resigned. My god, what would that look like?
Trump is generally nice, but he won't be nice to you if you're not nice to him. That's how he is.
THIS IS MAGA COUNTRY!!! 💪💪💪🇺🇲🇺🇲🇺🇲
What Did Trump Do That He Needed To Resign For Restoring Prosperity To The United States
I am sure jfk would hate nixion
50 Years of Resignation.
10:23
For President Nixon to have humor during the saddest day in history was ironic. Great leaders fall and rise. May he R.I.P.
One of the most corrupt presidents ever.....until Trump.
Exactly 50 years ago! Half a century!
Hey youre better lookin than I am why do ya stay?
You bet you never heard that from Trump preparing to broadcast to the nation
These images were broadcast from behind the scenes of the successful launch of the resignation of United States President Richard Nixon and were broadcast live here in Brazil on TV Globo
and I will be transmitted to the jornal internacional presented by Heron Domingues, who became known for presenting programs such as his Repórter Esso on Rádio Nacional in Rio de Janeiro and this behind-the-scenes news of this speech, as I have already mentioned in this comment, was broadcast live to Brazil and this It was also the last news about Heron Domingues who died the following day on August 9, 1974
It took a lot courage for former and deceased US President Richard Nixon to resign from this political position as US President. And I for one commend him for what he did for the good of America and for the good of the Republican party.
Hi. This is Sal Governale…

He had to resign at the peak of his popularity.
My admiration for Nixon continues to increase.
