Thanks Gary! This car was with me for just one full day so very tricky to fit it all in but the weather played ball and I had a destination to drive it to on day one to get to know it and a full day filming on day 2, the only full day. It's an interesting car so easy enough to talk about and nice to get a car early as not much content on this car unlike Golf R. If I don't get the views there won't be any more though so thanks for commenting and viewing :)

Unfortunately Gary, Andrew’s gained a reputation on social media for being a bit “whiny” when a car comes across that’s deemed superior to a VW. The GR Yaris being a prime example.
When he compares cars he’s already got the VW as a winner but just has to find a way to confirm that!

Yes indeed. I’m just not sure the R badge belongs on a car like this. When you think that the R stands for race and originated from a golf r32 which was a special golf, it’s just a marketing badge for me. Where as the mark 8 is what the R badge stands for in that it’s a very quick performance car.

  • @krane15

Great review. The Tiguan is definitely the more mature sibling. Although I can't help but notice its missing the blue stripe and the light strip of the Golf R. Also, definitely wish VW offered a black version to mute the chrome and blackout the grill, or at least offer a satin chrome.
Anyway, I doubt anyone expected the much tall and heavier SUV to be as sporty or as nimble as its hatchback little brother; and from what I can tell, the wheel arches do appear to be an unpainted plastic.
Those haptic button that you say, "some people don't like"? To be frank, nobody likes them. Its just that some people don't say anything, like the others that complain about them do. Still, I've never heard anybody say, I love, or prefer the touch buttons.
As for the shifter, it is a very dated look. Frankly, I'd prefer the Golf R nugget shifter instead. Overall, the interior is a monotone sea of depressing gray, same as the Golf. I like light interiors, especially the headliner. The exterior, on the other hand, comes off as classy. Just wish it had fog lights to fill those massive lower grill gaps. Maybe next year? Also, no mention of phone charger, rear view camera quality/360 degrees, or wireless Android/Apple car play.
BTW, isn't there an optional larger screen without the knobs? It does need more USB ports in the rear, however. With everybody carrying a hand-held device these days, a minimum of 4 per vehicle, should be the standard by now.

You can keep it. VW (and more so, Audi) are asking ridiculous money for their cars now and the finish is more akin to a 2017 Seat these days. Cheap crappy plastics in abundance. I own a Golf 7.5 and in all honesty, when I change, anything outside the VW group would be an upgrade. Lets be honest, anything in the rear or below waistline is just pure Vauxhall Astra circa 2005. Excellent review. I was considering this against the Golf R back in Feb and now feel I made the right choice for me with the Golf arriving in July. Some observations that stood out, I’m not a fan of the plastic wheel arches, quad exhaust tips aren’t as nice being the 7.5 style and I agree that the interior doesn’t look updated from previous generations so makes it look a bit underwhelming. I’d imagine the Audi SQ2 and even the BMW X2 M35i will be a serious competitor. How do you think this will stack up sales wise?

Now this beauty comes along loaded with goodies. If it was closer to £45k I might have been tempted, but at over 50 with a few options makes it out of reach for me, as I'm sure it will for the majority. Road tax I'm guessing would be more than the Golf even without the (rip-off) top up. Then there is the extra fuel cost. That 200Kg extra really knocks the mpg down. I've missed this video, and in actuality, owning a Tiguan appears more enticing than the new Golf performance series. When you see the interior environment of the former, that's what actually should have existed for the latter. Instead, VW decided to delete the entire framework of HVAC functionality and what Golf performance owners only have are the digital interface. It's why I've decided the S3 is by far the better choice and in the real world, being beaten by a pure R isn't so bad, because you're enjoying the motorways and city driving in your own car.

The 3 (or was it 4?) off road driving modes made me laugh out loud....as if anyone would take one of these anywhere near a field (on 35 profile tyres too🤣)! The interior seemed to be a blend of the worst bits of the Mk 7.5 & Mk 8 Golfs.
Having said that, you make a good point with regard to the look of it, compared to the Golf R (which does look a bit bland).
I just don't "get" these sort of cars at all, or what purpose they serve. If you need more space, get a Golf R Estate. If you need more rear passenger space, get an Arteon R Shooting Brake - which is a car I'd love to see you review sometime!

I own one, and the performance and handling are frankly astounding. 0-60 is half a second faster than the published figures at 4.7 seconds, which is also nearly a second faster than my previous 3 litre, V6 Porsche Macan. The cornering and general roadholding is nothing short of remarkable, thanks to the same torque-split rear differential that the Golf R 8 has. It doesn't wallow, and runs like it's on rails. Then you get the height, roominess, comfort and boot space of the standard Tiguan. The interior has included updates that make sense, but without needlessly hiding away everything useful under layers of screen menus. It's a car for every situation. Civilised on family duties, robust enough to cope with the rutted dirt tracks and fords I have around my village, but capable of acting like a hooligan when you want it to, which is most of the time. I'd much rather have this than a Golf. And I've enjoyed owning four Golfs.
