I love this. Ugh, i just dropped $400 on steady racks the other day. I'd love this option as it seems more flexible but in my garage, it's such a high ceiling I'd have to figure out a way to bring an overhanging shelf out with enough support to hold the bikes. Hmm...got me thinking though... What were those peg boards? Where were they from? I need me some of them to hang helmets!
I dropped a shelf from the ceiling too. Works great for gear bags. I have a metal storage box shelf i got at Home Depot in the garage It’s rated for 600lbs. The rail could tie into that shelf too. 300lbs of bike and 300lbs of gear.

I can't believe somebody else did this. I was raking the internet looking for good bike rack solutions when I came up with a rack made from barn door hardware that is almost exactly like this. The hooks rotate on mine but hang lower. Thank you for putting this on RUclips. I also think the world would benefit from this but I can't run a business or a RUclips channel. Thank you!

Just binge watched all the diy videos I could find… and then see this guy has already tried out those ideas and moved on to a better solution. Saves me the time spent & lost on trial & error. Absolutely brilliant. Thanks for sharing.

One of the very best things I like/love about your vids are that you don't inject non sense into your vids to make it longer. They are all to the point and direct. Thanks for the great ideas and keep up the great work. Keep safe.
I agree! I'm pretty new to this channel and this video is just as cool as the actual biking videos. I'm definitely going to look into this track system for my hooks already in the garage as it's perfect for saving space
What a great concept and demonstration. I was able to order the rails and dual roller sets at Lowe’s for $40 each. So for about $145, I have a great rack for four bikes. I bought the bike hooks at Lowe’s also ($5), mated the hook to the roller with a 12 mm nut, 2 for $1.25 at Lowes as well. It worked perfect, threaded on securely. The 12 mm nut fit into the recessed slot of the rollers so lock in place at one of eight positions. You can adjust the position of the hook by pushing the hook up and rotating until the nut drops back into slot.
This has been my biggest challenge building the rack; marrying the wood screws to a machine threaded bolt. I can't get anything to bite on the screw; at least, something that will also set into the roller like you did. I think my problem is made worse by the fact that I'm trying to use the thicker Blue Hawk bike hooks - that are thicker than the hooks that Alex linked to in the video. This is good input though, I might make _another_ trip to Lowe's to see if I can find something. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you thank you! You inspired me to build something similar with stuff I had on hand. An old bed frame for the rails and roller-skate trucks for the trolleys. It opened up so much space in my garage!
This is an awesome solution. Well done. I think I'll investigate if it's practical for the garage. Your next video should definitely be on how you built and secured the storage shelf that you attached the box rail to.

Keep up the good content and thank you again for the brilliant solution to bike storage (my wife probably thanks you too, for getting my bikes out of the house).
Thanks for this video. I built this last spring and it’s fantastic. 6 bikes in about 7’ of space and SO much cheaper. I did get the threaded hooks from Park Tools. Love it. So easy to get to any bike.
Insane. I was just doing the math on the current costs and was discouraged. Still probably the best solution, but much more expense than when the original video came out
Thanks for the inspiration, I built my own version of this rack this week and I am surprised how well 6 bikes nestle together. Don't tell the missus but I think I can now fit one or two more bikes :)
This is a great idea, I found that you can save a bit of money using unistrut for the track and rollers. I'm fabricating a steel shelf to mount to my garage wall and will hang this to the bottom of the shelf. Pro tip, if your bikes take up less space the wife won't notice a new one in the garage!
Big U-bolts with one leg cut off and covered in shrink tube works great with either setup and can be properly threaded into the "trolley" (keyword you should search for uni-strut roller things you need"). Unistrut will end up being about half the price.

Great idea and video. It looks like the costs for this project has gone way up. An alternative is to loop up parts for strut channel or unistrut trolleys. It also looks like the company 1up has made this product now that might be cheaper than buying the parts.
This is superb, thanks for sharing. Between four teenage boys, wife and myself, we have MANY bikes out in the garage. I’ve tried a ton of storage solutions and until now found the best to be a simple 2x board run between two vertical posts slightly above saddle height. Then you just lift the bike a few inches and rest the horn of the saddle on top of the board. Simple, cheap, tidy and effective; however with a bunch of bikes, they do get crowded together. I am going to take the same span in my garage and run a hanging-sliding rack as in this video, should work great.
Just did this with two 8’ sections for 6 bikes. I have the bikes running parallel to the wall with handlebars overlapping the next bike’s wheels because I have a fairly narrow space in my one car garage between the wall and car. One thing you should update, if you haven’t already is that Park (model 450) makes the same hooks with a black coating and machine bolt ends with two nuts included instead of the wood screw versions you spec’ed. Otherwise great solution!

I won't be able to take advantage of this idea, but I had to let you know that I thought it was genius. Really stable way to hang multiple bikes AND be able to slide them back and forth to select the bike of the day. Great video and idea.
Thank you so much for the step by step guide! I just got done building one in my garage yesterday and couldn’t be happier with the results. Have all five of my families bikes in half the space they used to occupy with room for three more and can still park the car no problem.
This rack looks awesome! Thanks for posting. I'm going to install one in my garage this weekend. Only question... How far did you mount the track from the wall? Is it about 14"? Thanks!
Nice idea, perfect to save space, yet avoid the PITA of trying to get closely spaced bikes out. Will definitely have to see if I can get any of those parts locally so I can do my version. Just found this channel and enjoy the informative and to the point videos, with as another commenter said, no stretching it out for longer views.
Oh, have to add- Park Tools makes machine threaded hooks in both sizes, better than mickey-mousing the wood screws. I have an 11' ceiling in my garage, mounted it with shelf brackets with 1/2" plywood shelf to the wall suds to get proper height. Top shelf holds truck pad, fenders, pads, helmets, etc. Did not win FAMILYHANDYMAN prize, but did get picture and basic assembly instructions into the magazine issue. Don't forget the thru bolts at each end to stop the rollers running out of either end, dropping bike on ground.
put up a variation of this in my garage this summer. i have a high ceiling in there so used some shelf brackets with a high weight limit to mount to the wall and also put a 24" deep shelf board on top. drilled holes in the top of my box rail to line up with the holes in the ends of the shelf brackets and bolted through the rail, bracket, and shelf to hold it together. drilled holes through the back of the box rail at both ends and put in plastic spacers i didn't need from tv mounts to keep the trolleys from coming out in a way i can't see from the front. cut it down to 6½ feet since that's the space i have and put 6 hooks in it. used park tool machine-threaded hooks that come with 2 screws -- the small size ones work great with a nut actually inside the trolley but the plus size i needed for my 27.5+ just barely has room to slide through where the rail bolts to the shelf and brackets. don't have any fat bikes so didn't get any of the largest hooks. got my box rail from home depot and the back track actually sits lower than the front track, so i need to push the wheel a bike is hanging by toward the wall a little to let the trolley slide side to side, meaning they sort of lock themselves in place when hanging free.
@@chillchristopher Performax® 20" Platinum Heavy-Duty Shelf Bracket from Menards. they claim each pair can support up to 1000 lbs and it's been very sturdy for me with 6 bikes (one of which is an ebike) hanging from 4 brackets.
Like it. I use a PVC standing rack and the bar/seat post/cable entanglement issues suck, so having the ability to slide bikes out of the way looks awesome. All I need now is wall space!
You are a genius!!! Your setup is just beautiful. I have been researching for ideas and yours is the best by far, thank you for sharing. I have some work to do in the garage now.
I am going to recreate this. How did you build the shelf that holds it? It looks very clean but I can't imagine a floating shelf being able to hold that much weight?
I like this system. I have either given away bikes or sold them cheap because I only had room for one bike in the garage. I have an outside shed for the rest but hate putting good bikes out there so I was storing one additional in my bedroom closet. I'll need to measure this off because currently my best bike is hanging above my Jeep in the garage so might not fit, but still like the idea.
Nice video. I did a more economical version of this with Park 450 hooks with tight fitting fender washers in place of the trolleys. Trolleys are nice but unnecessary if you are trying to cut costs.
This is awesome! Best storage system I’ve found on RUclips, I’m just curious where I could find the roller wheels and the stopper, hardware stores should have ?
Perfect! I have a space in my deep garage where I could build a setup just like this with a deep shelf similar to what you have. My shelf clearance would be around 79" instead of the 83" you prescribe but I think this will be ok as I don't have downhill bikes and most of my collection is shorter road, gravel and mountain bikes? Maybe I could get it up to 81" clearance by notching the wood studs so the rail becomes recessed. Can't really raise the shelf much as it would become less than 12" and kind of impractical for holding much. Also what’s a good distance from the wall to position the rail? Maybe16 inches would be fine as to avoid the tires bumping up and leaving marks on the wall? In my situation I can fit just one 8ft section of rail, what’s the max number of bikes you could store? I think I can fit up to 8 bikes if I alternate the bikes hanging from front and rear tires so the handlebars aren’t conflicting with each other too much.
I went a little different route and purchased a barn door kit on Amazon (DIYHD) for my garage, but did use the jumbo bike storage hooks from the listed link. I'm not sure if the hooks were different but would highly recommend 3/8 nuts and not 5/16, or just pick up 8 of each. And a ratcheting wrench set (will need a 7/16 and 1/2 for each nut). Though the 5/16 washers were the perfect size. Great design though! Worked like a charm once I worked out the kinks.
@@millerj826 I think it really depends on where you want to mount, but I installed in my garage. The way the studs run and the ceiling height forced me to run two steal L brackets from the rafters attached to a 2 x 4 at the bottom. I then attached the barn door slide to the 2 x 4. I ordered the "DIYHD 5FT Raw Material Galvanized Box Track Ceiling Mount Sliding Barn Door Hardware for Exterior Barn Door" off Amazon. The kit includes the barn door slide, two rollers and the hardware. Was probably more expensive than doing it the way in the video, but I paid for the convenience of not having to drill. The directions suck by the way but there's videos online. Overall worked great. My only gripe is the hooks don't exactly fit into the included rollers as easily in the video, but I made it work.
@@JoyOfBike I have the same problem with my jumbo hooks. I wanted to know how you managed to insert the 3/8 nut into the roller, or what method did you use? Thanks
Loved this, thanks so much!! Moving finally to our brand new home and I get to design the garage interior!! We have 8 bikes in total, mostly trail bikes with one gravel. How wide shall I go to keep it smooth and neath without taking too much space?
Built a free standing set up with the barn door hardware. Thanks a lot for the inspiration and awesome idea. Holds 8 bikes without an issue. Used the threaded park tool hooks, got them nicely locked in place so they don't rotate much.

I won't be able to take advantage of this idea, but I had to let you know that I thought it was genius. Really stable way to hang multiple bikes AND be able to slide them back and forth to select the bike of the day. Great video and idea.
Awesome DIY rack ! Thanks for taking the time to post and share this .
Wow, brilliant idea.. Long may you enjoy biking!
OK wow. This is the best thing I've seen in a while. Huge props!
Thanks 🙏
Oh, have to add- Park Tools makes machine threaded hooks in both sizes, better than mickey-mousing the wood screws. I have an 11' ceiling in my garage, mounted it with shelf brackets with 1/2" plywood shelf to the wall suds to get proper height. Top shelf holds truck pad, fenders, pads, helmets, etc. Did not win FAMILYHANDYMAN prize, but did get picture and basic assembly instructions into the magazine issue. Don't forget the thru bolts at each end to stop the rollers running out of either end, dropping bike on ground.
Great idea
Park tool makes a threaded hook - not much $ and less sketchy than a nut on coarse threads
Jesus! I live on a farm, I have all this stuff just laying around. Good video.
Genius idea. I’ve been trying to figure out what to do for my garage. This is perfect!
put up a variation of this in my garage this summer. i have a high ceiling in there so used some shelf brackets with a high weight limit to mount to the wall and also put a 24" deep shelf board on top. drilled holes in the top of my box rail to line up with the holes in the ends of the shelf brackets and bolted through the rail, bracket, and shelf to hold it together. drilled holes through the back of the box rail at both ends and put in plastic spacers i didn't need from tv mounts to keep the trolleys from coming out in a way i can't see from the front. cut it down to 6½ feet since that's the space i have and put 6 hooks in it. used park tool machine-threaded hooks that come with 2 screws -- the small size ones work great with a nut actually inside the trolley but the plus size i needed for my 27.5+ just barely has room to slide through where the rail bolts to the shelf and brackets. don't have any fat bikes so didn't get any of the largest hooks. got my box rail from home depot and the back track actually sits lower than the front track, so i need to push the wheel a bike is hanging by toward the wall a little to let the trolley slide side to side, meaning they sort of lock themselves in place when hanging free.
@misterhaan What shelf brackets did you use?
@@chillchristopher Performax® 20" Platinum Heavy-Duty Shelf Bracket from Menards. they claim each pair can support up to 1000 lbs and it's been very sturdy for me with 6 bikes (one of which is an ebike) hanging from 4 brackets.
Like it. I use a PVC standing rack and the bar/seat post/cable entanglement issues suck, so having the ability to slide bikes out of the way looks awesome. All I need now is wall space!
Interesting. I built similar units 25 years ago to slide bikes over cars in the garage. Used two hooks to hang the bikes from both wheels.
This is an excellent DYI idea. Thanks for sharing.
Love it, so simple. Tomorrow I'll get the parts I need to build! Thanks!
Cheers!
This is the best rack idea in existence. Respect ✊
Thank you!!!
You are a genius!!! Your setup is just beautiful.
I have been researching for ideas and yours is the best by far, thank you for sharing. I have some work to do in the garage now.
Hahaha. Hardly but glad you like it!!
Very, very impressive. You are VERY creative. Thanks for sharing, can't wait to try it in my garage.
This looks great! Looks like I'll have to have more of a think before buying a "Stashed" system which is basically just a more perfected version.
The stashed didn’t exist when I made this. I looked it up and I’d buy the stashed. Some super cool features. I’m tempted to order one and try it!
If I can afford it I might but your way is definitely an awesome affordable alternative 👍
I am going to recreate this. How did you build the shelf that holds it? It looks very clean but I can't imagine a floating shelf being able to hold that much weight?
This is totally SWEET! Alex, I enjoy your videos so much I bought a shirt! Keep it up man!
Your idea is BOSS, thanks for helping out my dilemma😊
Making this! Thanks 🫡
gear-blocks make bike hooks on a trolley that slides in a piece of unistrut or superstrut. I bought a six pack of the large hooks for $96.
This is fantastic!! Thank you for sharing all the details. I will do this in my garage.
Really neat idea. It must be awesome to pick todays high grade bike like others choose socks 👍
Interesting. The jumbo hooks might be bigger. I’m not sure. Glad it worked out!!
I have been trying to think about how to use a barn door kit. Would love to see an image of how you did this.
Thanks
I did this exact setup a year ago! its perfect, I just added an extension rod with a couple to make it easier for big mountain bike wheels .
how many inches from the edge of the wall did you mount the rail so the wheels clear the wall when you slide them?
This system is brilliant, thanks for the easy step by step guide! But curious, how did you pull this off for $238 if the trolley sliders are $50 each?
Agreed, the math I came up with was over $300 for a 2 pack of four for 8 bikes; and other parts
@@mikeylee3017 i found another video that shows the same system and links cheaper parts: ruclips.net/video/k0KEd7z_sXU/видео.html
You dnt have to use his parts from the link. Just see what you need and shop around for cheaper price.
I think is the best design in the web, keep your chilled vibe. Thanks.
Thanks, will do!
GENIUS! I love it. If I don’t do this by Spring I’m an idiot. Thank you!!
Hey how did you get the threaded park tool hooks to lock into place? I'm just about done with mine but i can't figure out how to keep the hooks from spinning freely...
@@michaelbird5750 Thread the hook through a hex nut when screwing in your hook. You should then be able to wrench the hex nut tight while holding your hook in the desired position.
I would love to hear more about your free standing solution, could you share any photos or links to the parts that you have used?
@@scott.a1565 Hey there Scott - I just built two towers and a big cross bar and bolted it up to it.
Perfect was searching for same Thanks now I can manage my society cycles nicely n make space clean n clear.
I was looking for this solution - just went back to hooks but need the slider solution. Perfect
Todd Stiers Right on!
this is genius!!!! Esp. with little shredders whos bikes keep getting bigger.... no new holes in the wall!
Right!! Just add a new roller and hook!
Awesome upgrade for the standard wall hooks❤👍
OK, it's been about a year. Still stoked on this system? It's genius for sure, just wondering how it's been living with it? Thank you!!!!!!!
