Interesting book. But I must take issue with p195 where you say that lactic acid causes pain etc. Not true, we have known that's not the case for two decades (commencing with Nielsen et al 2001), though sports commentators keep on about lactic acid. It is used as an energy source for skeletal and cardiac muscle after its conversion to lactate. In fact, lactate can also be converted to glucose by the liver. Lactic acid is a relatively strong acid, and thus quickly separates into a hydrogen ion and lactate within the muscle fibres. Elevated levels of hydrogen ions cause the muscle to become more acidic. This in turn can stimulate pain receptors within muscles, causing discomfort and the exercise “burn”.

One reason to want to live a long life, that helps us to live long and healthy is good company, something to live for, family and friends etc it makes life worth living in the first place, sadly I've lost hope in the human race with constant conflicts, deception, greed on and on. People need to be good to each other that's the first step in good health from my point of view, love and happiness equals health.
I use Morgan Levine's PhenoAge to track the impact of my diet. Interestgly, I did slightly better on a vegan + sardines + yogurt + cheese diet than I did on a vegan + sardines diet.
@@DonnaLHaney I ate about 2 eggs a week in both cases. Eggs consumption is associated with an increased all-cause mortality, and in randomized trials with increased Tryglecerides and insulin resistence, so I try to limit their intake.
@@ok373737 thx for replying. I was vegan for 7 years, then had my DNA analysis which showed an extremely high need for choline, so I added eggs (and fish, as well as dairy & some cheese). I understand, as you say, eggs are generally "associated with" higher all cause mortality, but I wonder how else someone like myself should balance that with getting enough choline in their diet.
@@DonnaLHaney what in the DNA analysis suggested that more Choline is needed? How many eggs do you eat a week? Eating nuts, fish, some chicken and red meat should provide some Choline but not as much as eggs. But who know if the RDA is actually optimal for you.

Later analysis with Chris Masterjohn limited to choline recommended 800+mg dietary choline/day. RDI is about 1/2 that. I've been eating two eggs/day plus fish, cruciferous veggies, nuts, etc and supplement with both choline & TMG. I've always had very low triglycerides, but became insulin resistant as a vegan. I now follow the old ZoneDiet macros, but violate Dr. Sears' advice to avoid egg yolks, trying to balance all of this, but can't really afford to get a lot of repeated tests to see how it's going.
A first set of 71 CpG islands can fit the chronical age.. another completely different set can similarly fit... that basically argue against any shred of causality of the epi aging clock.
You mentioned women epigenetic age being younger than man with same chronological age assuming similar lifestyle is adopted with women and as long as they get their period this stays consistent. Later you talked about the current hot topic which is young and old plasma exchange or even dillution which shows rejuvenation effect. Well, thete is a relationship here- women age is affected by their period since they lose blood which helps with rejuvenation procedures forced by the body. Now, most likely this could be observed just by drawing blood from men once a month for some time to validate the same. That is why prp treatment which is often used as hair growth catalyst or wound healing could also have this side effect on aging in a positive manner. Especially when done repetitively every x time. Some data suggests that there is a negative over accumulation of iron in aging blood and removing some of it enables rejuvenation to take effect
I hope we find something that reverses aging without drastically changing lifestyles aside from not smoking and bad habits like that. I don't think fasting all the time is for most people.
@@FoundMyFitness I did see a study where a certain diet and lifestyle change reversed 'epigenetic age' or markers, its interesting but it doesn't necessarily mean that the person will live longer, they may even shorten their lives following such a protocol, the diet for example - participants were allowed to eat I think more than safe levels of Liver (longterm it may damage their livers due to too much vit A) a few servings of red meat, intermittent fasting, exercise etc, now what if a person who has CKD for example decides to follow their example nd starts pounding down red meat, they will progress faster down the rout to end stage kidney disease as the kidneys are already damaged and cant filter as they used to, depending on the exercise this can also tax the kidneys and so following the example of lifestyle and diet changes that showed a reversal of epigenetic age would actually (more than likely) REDUCE their life. This is why these studies have to be taken with a pinch of salt as they may NOT work on us as individuals and could even harm us. I love your interviews by the way. Would cell free dna tests like Grail allow us to capture fragments of dna from various tissues with high specificity (~90%), and at the same time allow epigentic aging by tissue type if enough fragments from each tissue are captured?
So what are the actionable steps regarding optimising one's Omega 3 index? I eat Salmon twice a week, flaxseeds daily, but take no Omega 3 supplements - should I be getting blood work and supplementing based on the results in the same way I do with Vit D? - David
Yeah you need way more. I personally consume 4g of OM3 a day (around 2G DHA / day). AM not a doctor, but I have been doing this for about 7 years, and I notice within a few weeks when I stop in my skin, mood, hair, and cognition (and in blood lipids).
Ultimately, I don’t need this info. I need the interview to go like “You look great! And you study aging, perfect. So what do you do, specifically in detail, to slow aging?”

Shouldn't the clocks be customized rather than one size fits all? Those families with a genetic history of Type II diabetes might have a different clock with different component weights versus other families. Thoughts?
The hypothesis of the Epigenetic Clocks is that it shows the biological age. If so, slowing it, or reversing it would hopefully reduce the biological age to. Has this been shown in mice? Or is it still just a correlation, such that changing the epigenetic clock is ineffective. That is, does reducing the epigenetic clock actually reduce the biological age? Oris it perhaps like making your clock go slower, which hardly makes you live longer!
My mom got double pneumonia at 16 they read her the last rites. TB at 17 relapse at 36 cancer at 54 cancer again at 78. She is now 93 and going strong so I am not sure where disease is predictive of other serious illness shortening lifespan?
Interestingly, alot of very long lived people have had many serious diseases including cancers. I guess the saying is true: "That which does not kill us, makes us stronger". Body has a remarkable way to bounce back from disease. But there are no guarantees.
Your personal anecdotes don't mean anything in the grand scheme of what the information says. Everyone always has that typical personal take "well my grandma drank and smoked her entire life and she lived to 90" ok cool but that doesn't mean anything in regards to the literature and statistics.
@Alfonso Hunt yes, optimism according to some studies also has an impact on wound healing! So a positive mental well-being, along with optimism and reducing stress, are key for health and wellness. This is not merely to be rejected as 'quackery'.
@Alfonso Hunt This is mostly mythology. The Amygdala becomes damaged very late in life, and when it does, you become more happy and carefree. All those cautious mental feelers, prepared for anything, just erode. So when they interview very old people, they sound very upbeat. My grandfather was always quiet and very reserved. But when he got to his high 90s he became the life of the party telling all kinds of jokes, and smiling all the time. The liking of mental activity is probably just a reflection of brain health. There is no evidence that if you slave drive your brain to do more activity, that you will become healthier. In fact, there was a study and mental exercises did not achieve much. The, changing mental outlook thing to extend your life, is just new age mumbo jumbo. Often repeated, but still junk science...with a dose of wishful thinking...and a dose of blame for those not giddy in the midst of their aches and pains. I am not trying to be a downer, there are many things we can do to age better, extend our healthspan and lifespan. Thinking your way to a long life is just unlikely to be one of those. That said, depression does cause harm.
Idk if anyone can answer me this. So. If an epigenetic age test is comparing what your methylation pattern is against....sort of a Standard curve of methylation patterns. And the standard they use is based on the mass population, how do we know the population standard curve is necessary a good standard? So really the test is saying how well do you fair against the rest of society? Is that correct?
She said "there is no one cause of aging" but different species live very different life spans. Dogs and cats live only 20 years or so and parrots live to 90. So in my view there must be a genetic clock and we should be able to switch it off. I'll definitely subscribe if you can switch my clock off.
They said genetics accounts for “only 10-20%” of aging as tho it was an insignificant percentage. That’s approximately 7-20yrs… that’s very significant in my opinion.
3 main things: 1. Higher temperature tends to accelerate aging. This is due to a higher probability of enough heat quanta meeting in proximity to complex molecules where a bond can be broken, made, or arms around a stereo center switched, that is not part of normal function, damaging proteins and other molecules (Said more succinctly, there is higher quantum tunneling damage with higher temperature). 2. Antioxidant activity. Some animals have less effective forms of SOD, fewer forms, and lower concentration, and some other antioxidants that their bodies make. 3. Various species have better or worse DNA repair systems, and different rates of damage. Temperature is pretty big. This likely explains why bowhead whales, naked mole rats, some fish, lobsters, bivalves, and reptiles like tortoises, live so long. And is certainly a factor in why humans live so long. We also live a long time because we have the best SOD levels around. But some other creatures may have better DNA repair than we have. We are the temperature we are, because enzymes only operate well at a range of temperatures, and our enzymes are fairly particular, which is why we die easily if our core temp changes much...too many processes are too slow outside that window. So just dialing it down, at least a lot, is not a viable life extension method. However, having very low inflammation does lower temperature. Same thing with lower blood sugar, and fasting. But clearly there is a point of diminishing returns as we move away from optimal temps for our enzymes. Some super centenarians make a lot more Sirtuin 6, this improves the accuracy of double DNA break repair...which could easily be why they reach an advanced age. There are other factors, of course, for the variability of animal aging. Immune system is one of these. We have a pretty terrific immune system...probably too good, due to recent selection in cities and long exposure to domesticated animals (over the last several thousand years), which we really were not designed for...likely leading to more autoimmune disorders.
With all due respect Dr Rhonda please try to shed light on the livers ability to heal cells by sending out photochemical compounds attached to amino acids and antioxidants to seek and heal the cell instead of only researching the cell. Also, I would argue the benefits of animal based protein with regard to muscle gain and prevention of muscle loss as we age outweigh any negative consequences. My argument isn't that plant based diets aren't effective with regard to longevity, just that they aren't optimal. Of course, the truth is we just don't know enough yet to make definitive claims!

What do you think of Dr Michael greger's assertion that vegans fare the best for overall health, according to the meta-analysis of all the evidence?

Ageing and getting old 24hrs aday 365 days a year causes no harm no damages no sickness or even death to people.

My mom got double pneumonia at 16 they read her the last rites. TB at 17 relapse at 36 cancer at 54 cancer again at 78. She is now 93 and going strong so I am not sure where disease is predictive of other serious illness shortening lifespan?

Interestingly, alot of very long lived people have had many serious diseases including cancers. I guess the saying is true: "That which does not kill us, makes us stronger". Body has a remarkable way to bounce back from disease. But there are no guarantees.

Everyone always has that typical personal take "well my grandma drank and smoked her entire life and she lived to 90" ok cool but that doesn't mean anything in regards to the literature and statistics.
@Alfonso Hunt yes, optimism according to some studies also has an impact on wound healing! So a positive mental well-being, along with optimism and reducing stress, are key for health and wellness. This is not merely to be rejected as 'quackery'.
@Alfonso Hunt This is mostly mythology. The Amygdala becomes damaged very late in life, and when it does, you become more happy and carefree. All those cautious mental feelers, prepared for anything, just erode. So when they interview very old people, they sound very upbeat. My grandfather was always quiet and very reserved. But when he got to his high 90s he became the life of the party telling all kinds of jokes, and smiling all the time. The liking of mental activity is probably just a reflection of brain health. There is no evidence that if you slave drive your brain to do more activity, that you will become healthier. In fact, there was a study and mental exercises did not achieve much.
The, changing mental outlook thing to extend your life, is just new age mumbo jumbo. Often repeated, but still junk science...with a dose of wishful thinking...and a dose of blame for those not giddy in the midst of their aches and pains.
I am not trying to be a downer, there are many things we can do to age better, extend our healthspan and lifespan. Thinking your way to a long life is just unlikely to be one of those.
That said, depression does cause harm.

Idk if anyone can answer me this. So. If an epigenetic age test is comparing what your methylation pattern is against....sort of a Standard curve of methylation patterns. And the standard they use is based on the mass population, how do we know the population standard curve is necessary a good standard? So really the test is saying how well do you fair against the rest of society? Is that correct?

What do longer lifespan animals have that differs from shorter lifespan animals?
3 main things: 1. Higher temperature tends to accelerate aging. This is due to a higher probability of enough heat quanta meeting in proximity to complex molecules where a bond can be broken, made, or arms around a stereo center switched, that is not part of normal function, damaging proteins and other molecules (Said more succinctly, there is higher quantum tunneling damage with higher temperature). 2. Antioxidant activity. Some animals have less effective forms of SOD, fewer forms, and lower concentration, and some other antioxidants that their bodies make. 3. Various species have better or worse DNA repair systems, and different rates of damage.
Temperature is pretty big. This likely explains why bowhead whales, naked mole rats, some fish, lobsters, bivalves, and reptiles like tortoises, live so long. And is certainly a factor in why humans live so long. We also live a long time because we have the best SOD levels around. But some other creatures may have better DNA repair than we have.
We are the temperature we are, because enzymes only operate well at a range of temperatures, and our enzymes are fairly particular, which is why we die easily if our core temp changes much...too many processes are too slow outside that window. So just dialing it down, at least a lot, is not a viable life extension method. However, having very low inflammation does lower temperature. Same thing with lower blood sugar, and fasting. But clearly there is a point of diminishing returns as we move away from optimal temps for our enzymes.
Some super centenarians make a lot more Sirtuin 6, this improves the accuracy of double DNA break repair...which could easily be why they reach an advanced age.
There are other factors, of course, for the variability of animal aging. Immune system is one of these. We have a pretty terrific immune system...probably too good, due to recent selection in cities and long exposure to domesticated animals (over the last several thousand years), which we really were not designed for...likely leading to more autoimmune disorders.

@@ThierryPianoSolo you are correct, but mtor stimulation seems to only be problematic in metabolically unhealthy individuals. Also, I would argue the benefits of animal based protein with regard to muscle gain and prevention of muscle loss as we age outweigh any negative consequences. My argument isn't that plant based diets aren't effective with regard to longevity, just that they aren't optimal.
Of course, the truth is we just don't know enough yet to make definitive claims!
