I am an 85 year old classically trained singer and, like you, never heard of Lara Fabian! This was the absolute best performance I have ever heard in my life!!! One needs a supply of tissues to
wipe away the tears and blow one's nose. Lara is now in her fifties and still singing.
She was born in Belgium, raised in Italy, knew she was born to sing at 5, studied voice classically
for a decade and moved to Canada when she was only 20. Is fluent in French, Italian and English.

@@frankbirch3877 I am a translator, and while I can appreciate the tremendous difficulty in translating Serge Lama's lyrics, the previous commentators were correct: there are mistakes in this translation, and it does not do the original lyrics justice. It's good enough to give a fair sense of what the song is about, but it completely fails to capture the gut-wrenching poetry of the original. I'm not sure that I could do any better, but it would be dishonest to say that this is a great translation, as it it really is not.

Lara Fabian is an international star. She is not French but Belgian. Her mother is Italian. She sings in many languages and speaks English fluently. She is also a songwriter. She wrote with another person Broken Vow that Josh Groban recorded. She rearranged the words and title for Jackie Evancho to sing. She has sold many CDs and is the most successful Belgian singer of all time. I'm American and I very definitely know who Lara Fabian is. She is a wonderful singer. One of my favorites.

I love how moved you were because this was truly genuine! Many people have already written about Lara but I'll add my own commentary. She was born in Belgium in 1970 to a Sicilian mother and a Belgian father (her mom, Luisa, recently passed away from a neurodegenerative disorder). Her vocal technique has been honed since a very young age at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, where she studied both classical music and piano for the vast majority of her teenagehood. Since then, she's worked with many masters like Pierre Yves-Duchesne and Lucette Tremblay to develop her voice (she still takes classes today, even group lessons with common folks). She isn't an opera singer, but her singing draws on operatic elements, such as the lowered larynx, the open throat, the pharyngealization of vowels, etc. You can hear her employing these elements as early as 1988, when she performed at the Eurovision song contest at just 18 years of age. It wasn't until the late 90s that her technique was FULLY solidified, at which point she cemented her place in history as one of the most proficient singers in pop music. The performance you reacted to is from 2010, which is past her prime, although her vocal technique did not actually decline at all, just the potency of her cords. If you want to hear her at her best, check out all the performances from the From Lara With Love show, they are all incredible.
Now, moving out of this vocal technique bubble, I think it's worth mentioning that Lara is just as famous for her emotional deliveries as she is for her singing skills. A mastery of her voice allows her to allocate more attention to her performances. Her own father described it best: "She doesn't sing, she plays and acts." The fact that she speaks 4 languages and sings in 12 also helps connect with a global audience. Her most emotionally moving concert was definitely En Toute Intimite in 2003, you could check that out too. A gem from that concert is this very song, Je Suis Malade.
You probably haven't heard of her because she never promoted in the US beyond her debut in 2000, which wasn't well received commercially in this country sadly (apart from the dance single, I Will Love Again). However, she maintains a large presence in Europe and Russia, where she has based her singing for most of her career. She is still recording music today although the direction of her artistry has taken a turn towards a more modern sound these last 2 albums.
My channel is dedicated to Lara, so if you care to you could check out the videos I have, most of them are about her vocals from a technical perspective.

Eurovision etc. She puts her entire soul into each and every performance. So emotive the use of her eyes and body language. She's covered Streisand, Houston and Carey quite well. I'm glad you're a wreck now lol. She does that!! Her PBS concert From Lara...showcases her at her best, especially je suis malade, j'taime, caruso and adagio. Adagio is my favourite. She has English and Italian versions. The Italian is more emotional because of the Italian passion Lara has, being part Sicilian. You've got to check out her Hungary/Magyar concert where the audience sings to her, her J'Taime. The lyrics were too mature for her so Foster asked his good friend Lara to change the lyrics. She translated the English into French and Jackie put the song on her album.

The original lyrics are from a French singer songwriter Serge Lama that wrote it for Dalida.
This version is more laid back she sang it differently when she was younger. (you can compare it with her earlier concert ''From Lara with love')
She sings in a dozen languages and is born in Belgium from Sicilian parents.
She emigrated to Québec to pursue a career in English but has a global career and writes her own lyrics.

Just watched Christi's reaction to Lara Fabian's Moscow performance of 'Je suis malade', and she is spot on! Lara is a very successful Belgian (not french) music artist, and she has been singing this song, written and initially performed by French singer Serge Lama, since about 1996. I also reccommend watching the version from her first NPR special 'From Lara with Love' in 2000, a very powerfull performance. And while at it, add her version of Massimo Ranieri's song 'Perdere L'Amore' ... you can basically hear what expression her face makes when listening to her voice! What an incredible talent!

Lara competed in the 1988 Eurovision Contest at the age of only 18. To the North Americans, Eurovison is American Idol ten fold. She came in 2nd or 3rd I believe! Celine Dion actually won that year representing Switzerland at the age of 20. Lara actually said that she idolized Celine and you can hear the influence but Lara is Definitely more theatrical. It's actually AMAZING to see that She still has her voice because many singers of her generation have deteriorated but she has managed to maintain hers. It's a testament to her technique.

This live performance of "Je suis malade" is particularly interesting because it's only Lara's voice and the piano. There are other versions with more elaborate musical arrangements, but this one was a great pick for a first-time listener because it really showcases Lara's vocal abilities. I have been a fan of Lara since she released her first album in 1991, and I have heard her sing this song countless times. Each time is a unique experience for the reasons you mentioned: Lara doesn't just sing the song, she becomes the song. This song was written by Serge Lama (lyrics) and Alice Dona (music). Serge Lama wrote so many fantastic songs and he was having fun being the boyish playboy. I saw him sing this song in the early 70’s and I could not believe how he could write such a vulnerable, torn to the core sad story. His interpretation was Very intense. Lara Fabian does it beautiful justice and she has written lots of absolutely breathtaking songs herself. Mr. Dimas Kudaibergen was impressed and inspired by her (among others). It’s wonderful to see how the wheel keeps turning and how great talents creates future great talents.
