    This video is quite a good idea. One of the holdups for people to switch to Linux is that they don't know what application they can use to do X. When my father and I talked about Linux he said he wouldn't even know which program to use as file browser.

      Obsidian is awesome. Live Markdown preview (not side 2 side, but literally live while typing) and full vim keybindings.

      @@matthias2447 Yes, the best part is the fact that all your notes are stored like very normal markdown files, without any weird just works on this app and good luck finding the files in your file manager way. You can literally do anything with them, sync them the way you want, or even encrypt them the way you want. Like my phone is ancient, so obsidian is always laggy and I can basically use a simpler, less laggy app on my phone all while syncing.

    • @jannikmeissner

    A key thing to consider when selecting a note taking app is the format in which it saves the notes. Ideally, you'll want something that is interoperable with everything else and will always work no matter what the platform.. so if you decide to use another app you can move very easily. This means that text is the ideal format, and apps like Joplin store notes in Markdown, which is just a nice way of formatting text files.

  • @KuruGDI
    @KuruGDI 2 года назад +20

    My note app: A txt file and a text editor.
    You have to care about the synch yourself, but you can use the same file on Linux, Mac and Windows...

    • @Klffsj
      @Klffsj 2 года назад

      That's what I like personally. A little formatting is nice, but pretty quickly, I find myself spending more time formatting than writing. Most of the time, whitespace (blank lines and indention) is enough to present a clear structure for me, although tables are necessary from time to time.

    • @negirno
      @negirno 2 года назад +1

      @@Klffsj I still miss the linking features so I can't just go all text file, plus sometimes I want to insert an image. So I just use Obsidian because that's the only markdown editor which has similar interface on mobile and it doesn't drive me up the wall :-)
      And I use Syncthing to sync these notes between my devices.

    • @Klffsj
      @Klffsj 2 года назад

      @@negirno That's understandable. I don't insert pictures as much as I should. And, a lot of times, plain text editors will still link hypertext links by default. (Or are you referring to tags, where you can link to other notes?)
      I still don't have my Linux PC fully built, so I haven't decided on a solution for file sharing, cloud, syncing, and backups yet. I'm installing on ZFS, which supports very efficient file syncing abilities. So, I'd like to make use of that when I can.
      Nick stated in replies to other comments that he'll be covering Obsidian in a different video, so I'll be looking forward to that. I haven't heard of it before, but I've seen a lot of recommendations for it in the comments.

    Hi!! There is a new Linux native GTK open-source note-taking app called TECHNENOTES (which I am actively developing). Although there are multiple amazing note-taking app out there, I do think that TechneNotes has some strong points, starting from the database-like interface (with pagination, ordering, filtering, all combined with a treeview structure), the safety of local data storage with optional cloud sync (users choose if and how to sync data over the cloud), multi-tabs support with full-width note view, integration of text/files/images/videos as in a web-page, interconnected notes, standard markdown syntax (for cross-compatibility), and - most of all - its native (Gtk) and open source nature (thus ensuring that your notes will be fully accessible in the future, with no risk of vendor lock-in)

    4:23 Add --disable-gpu-sandbox flag. This is an issue on Fedora 35 for apps using some older versions of Electron. Happened to me with Etcher and Mailspring.

    I miss the look of the old studio (it looks like the kitchen) but this setup looks more practical. Need to relocate the paper notes you had on the wall!

      I think he was looking at formatted note taking software specifically. There are a ton of quality plain text editors out there, and I personally don't think they're worth spending a video on.

    Youve gotta be kidding me I was searching all day for this yesterday and ended up in a tie between online onenote, obsidian or trillium lol

    Came in because I'm always interested in lists of software that can be used like 'external brains'. Amusingly, your oblique reference to Obsidian is the first I've heard of that, and now I'm looking into that.

    hey, for the evernote error you have to open the appimage with the --no-sandbox flag, it will likely fix that issue

    Notion is barely more complicated than some programs mentioned here (and is what I use), sadly the linux desktop version is not as well maintained as that for windows/android/or mac.

      It's also more of a productivity app than a note taking app :) I'll cover it in a later video

    One that I would semi recommend is apostrophe. Although, yes, it uses Haskell, it works just fine for minimalistic use, and synergies very well with gtk

    Using trillium notes and, with all downsides, can't find any replacement... It's web app on nodejs and desktop apps on electron with sync capabilities, but I'm happy with only server install - really no need for sync If it works in web browser

    I don't understand. Which of these apps work with a whiteboard and stylus that works for linux, and which whiteboard is best for taking handwritten notes on linux the way you can take notes in Microsoft whiteboard?

    This is why I left Evernote. It's lack of a Linux app. I took my money (much less of it too), to Upnote. Runs great on All platforms that I have used.
