12 Things The Cuphead Show Changed From The Video Game

- The Cuphead video game came out in 2017, and gamers were thrilled with the production value and competency of this indie-made game, containing hand-drawn animation and a thrilling, vibrant soundtrack. While the game had an animation style that was an ode to more adult-oriented animation and themes, Netflix saw the designs as a good basis for a children’s program. There have been many video game adaptations over the years, but this one is certainly a unique one, a game coming from a team unwilling to compromise in their vision leading to a product with a strong enough brand to be turned into a serialized show. But in that change, some things needed to be fine tuned for a change in audience, as a children’s show requires a different approach than a simple shoot ‘em up story about two cups saving their souls. Today, we’re going to go over some of the big changes Cuphead has gone through from game to Netflix series, including character changes like the ones done to the Root Pack, Ms. Chalice, King Dice, The Devil, Elder Kettle, Grim Flintlock, and more. We’ll alos discuss changes made to the iconic animation style from the game as well as changes to the music and scores the brand has become infamous for. I dont think alot of the changes have anything to do with it being a "kids show" but more like writing the game version of cuphead would be super boring as nothing really happens and the bosses aren't proactive, and nothing really happens to you when you walk from boss too boss.
Also writing the changes off as "for kids" is super weak, because over half the show is mugman and cuphead either trying to scam, steal, or murder the other characters, even a child would know dropping something heavy on a glass would break it, like how mugman tried killing cuphead, also bowlboy nuff said.
It's for kids like in the sense that Donald Duck War cartoons are for kids. Really, people nowadays see anything animated and water it down as 'just for kids'. But to be fair, most kids cartoons nowadays are very safe (or what parents consider as safe) and therefore the family-friendly nature could be quite annoying. Remember when guns, cigarettes, and creativity were allowed in childrens media? I miss that.

Also cartoons were for adults first before they were for children.

Okay, first of all, they didn’t tone down the mature themes in the show for only kids to enjoy, they toned it down so MORE people (aka kids too) could enjoy it. They didn’t do it to make it entirely for kids.
Secondly, HAVE YOU SEEN SEASON 2? Mugman literally tried to MURDER an ice cream guy and his own brother. Plus, the entire bowl boy episode was just creepy all together. They definitely toned up the mature themes in season 2.
Thirdly, even tho it is more made for kids, doesn’t mean adults can’t enjoy it. *Inserts the brony fandom*

While they're technically right, this is the first time i ever heard someone call digital 2D ToonBoom animation "CGI".
Speaking entirely on the facts, if you draw an image in MS paint, it's a computer generated image, or CGI. That term has never exclusively been related to 3d rendering.

The show is pretty hilarious and fun to watch. I love making my younger cousins watch it, they love it.
There has been so much wrong with this list that, I don't even know where to begin. A kids show can still show more mature themes for all to enjoy and the Cuphead creators definetly know that. The root pack is now a bigger threat as they would have been able to kill all of the plants around, which they even did. Chalice only got the redesign in the game to make her work as a playable character, yet she still has the same backstory and nothing got changed. The Devil having more fur to make him look fluffier can make him look even more threatening as well depending on the shot. Grim was already able to breath fire without turning his head to a flamethrower, and you showed that footage several times. And were you really saying that a finger gun, a thing kids do, is too mature for kids? As it ain't a snap, it is just a finger gun

MAYBE it's worth waiting another seven or more years to paint the ALL shows in a uniquely vintage and elaborate style.
I actually have a theory for some of this, Ribby and Croaks, the finger bullets, the fact they broke Brineybeard's legs, and the way the finale ended with the casino, I'm willing to bet the entire show is one big prequel to the game. Now that would raise the question of if that were the case wouldn't Chalice and the cups already know each other in the game but still, it explains a lot don't it?
The only other cartoon show's I can think of that hard ridiculously hard games + with friendly kids show's are:
- Earthworm Jim
- Battletoads
- Mega Man (The Ruby Spears series)

Not sure if this is true but i heard the shows story was before the games story so cuphead and mugman are kids in the show and after the show thats where the games story came in as the cups grew to kidults old enough to go into a casino (the casino opens after the show)

Porkrind in the game is a friendly shopkeeper, who welcomes the cups into his shop, while he is mostly annoyed, and hates the cups in the show.
Fun fact: I beated cuphead at 12 years old last year I’m now 13 (Solo) Took me 3 days In total
I wonder if season 3 is gonna make it so that in cupheads incompetence in saving mugman, he gets him killed, so chalice gives him her own body, leaving her without one to change into at will
I just want to say a thing about the finger gun...
I don't think they took it away cuz kids show blah blah, but there could be a possibility that they don't have the finger guns because they didn't drink the potion. In the game they had to drink a potion to get the fingers guns sooo..
Also at the end of season two it shows cuphead will have to save mugman and he could possibly go to elder kettle and get that potion from the game
Probably maybe they'll get an ep of that somewhere on the next season, just like those other ones. But maybe, anyways u got a point tho. It's not just because they removed it because it's a kid's show kind of thing. Maybe the show's story and main point is actually different from the video game.
