This is the intro for the children's show, Today's Special.
It aired new episodes in Canada from 1981-1987, but I personally use to watch re-runs of it on PBS in the USA from the mid to late 80's, to perhaps the early 90's. Развлечения
Omg This.
So here’s a good / weird story
I was Born in 1985. i cant recall if I ever watched it as I was so young.
Around my 6th birthday (give or take) I began having this weird dream; not often but enough for me to consistently recall pieces of it.
I would recall : a woman with a mannequin, maybe in a mall,
hocus-pocus alamagockus
No clue- but I continued having it into my late teens…in comes retrojunk….
Scrolling through 80s shows & one stood out to me -click- -play intro-
I nearly launched myself off the couch with shock, when I realized that THIS INTRO, is what I had been dreaming of for my entire life.
Glad I’ve been on an 80s tv binge - and this popped up in my recommended feed….
In the 16 and a half years since I uploaded this video, out of all the comments I have read (which is most of them), this is the best comment I've seen so far.
@@Shikkyn lol thank you :) it was one of the weirdest things that has ever happened to me. I Never get an opportunity to share it; so I’m glad that you enjoyed it :)
I usually try to keep my comments / related stories as short as possible ((it never happens)) but this one had to be in it’s entirety.
Edit:: also, thank you for my very first pinned comment
I was also born in 85 and vaguely remember this. I tried to tell other people about it to see if they remember it and no one ever does. Core memory unlocked.
I had a similar experience. I was born in 1982 and same...not sure I remember watching this at the time, but I clearly did or at least the intro. But just like you, all I could remember was the mannequin going up the escalator, and anytime I brought it up people just assumed it was from the movie Mannequin. I was absolutely sure it was something else.
So funny you mention Retrojunk. I was all over that sight when it came out, and it's how I discovered so many of these nostalgic videos and toys.
Funny how stuff like this hides in the deep corners of your brain.
This comment is life.
Remember when you were a kid and couldn’t wait to become an adult? Well now we’re adults wanting to be kids again Lol. Man this show brings back some good memories.
Petridge Farm remembers!
Actually I never particularly looked forward to becoming an adult. There is some benefits of being an adult, though there is negative things about it also.
I never wanted to become an adult. I didn't want to grow up, I was a toys r us kid. now I have to pay taxes and there aren't any toys r us in the united states.
Life is kinda lame as an adult.......greed has made you too much money or poor like me......my faded chrome mongoose was my happiness and my adventure
I know right
This is why I'm glad I was born in 1982, and was able to witness Nickelodeon back in its prime & heyday in the 80's & 90's.
We had old-school Nick Jr. with shows like Today's Special, Under the Umbrella Tree, Pinwheel, Make the Grade, David the Gnome, Noozles, Adventures of the Little Koala, Maya the Bee, Fred Penner's Place, & Eureka's Castle.
Then we had the prime Nick itself, Nickelodeon, with shows and toons like Star Trek: The Animated Series, Grimm's Fairy Tale Classics, Hey Dude, Mr. Wizard's World, You Can't Do That On Television, Double Dare, Salute Your Shorts, Clarissa Explains It All, Roundhouse, Are You Afraid of the Dark, The Tomorrow People, Legends of the Hidden Temple, GUTS, Nick Arcade, Get the Picture, The Adventures of Pete & Pete, AHHH! Real Monsters, Doug, Rugrats, Ren & Stimpy, Rocko's Modern Life, Wild & Crazy Kids, & Snick on Saturday nights from 8-10.
Then finally, at night when kids went to bed, adults tune into Nickelodeon's Nick-At-Nite, with old soaps and TV shows like I Love Lucy, Mister ED, Green Acres, & The Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle Show.
THAT'S Nickelodeon.
Totally!!! I miss old nickelodeon... and being a kid. if I had known how much I would miss being a kid, I wouldn't have been in such a hurry to grow up! 😛
***** Memories. I sure miss my childhood - especially all those old Nickelodeon TV shows.
You forgot about Nick Rocks! And You can't do that on television! With Dave coolia! I was born in 78 and my sister and I always reminisce about that great time in the 80's! Best memories
I use to love this show
I remember an episode where the guy from fragil rock played a drunk.
Born in 81. This was the golden age of children's television
excuse me while i weep over my lost childhood
Same here man, same here
Why weep its still there. Just in your fond memories. You can revisit them anytime. Buy a bowl of your favorite cereal and watch a cartoon you remember fondly. Guarantee other memories will come back to you.
Dean Ventura, I remember watching this when it was on PBS and when I was Living In Canton South Dakota, I wish that there was a Network that Airs Only Old School PBS shows Like This One, and, Sesame Street (Before it got Screwed Up), Shining Time Station, Tales From The Tree House, Once Upon a Time (I'm not talking about the TV Series of The Same Name that Used to be on ABC and Netflix), Star Lore, Storylords, Story Time, Mister Roger's Neighborhood (R.I.P Fred Rogers), Captain Kangaroo (R.I.P Bob Keshan), Newton's Apple, 3-2-1 Contact, Kratt's Creatures, Zoobliee Zoo, Reading Rainbow, Read It, The Write Channel, The Book Bird, Cover To Cover, Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego, etc. etc. Because Kids Today Don't Know What Good Shows Are These Days, After Everything That's Been Happening On TV, There's Nothing Good For Kids To Watch.
I liked this as a kid, but now as an adult it just kind of creeps me out. Funny how things that scare you as a kid don't as an adult, and things that don't scare you as a kid scare you when you're older. 😳
@@dbcooper5008 it's amazing ain't it?
Rest in peace Nerene Virgin. Thank you for your unrivalled contribution to mine & so many kid’s childhoods. ❤️🙏🏾🕊️
I grew up watching the show
Use to watch this show back in the day. Brings back so much memories. RIP Nerene Virgin
I was born in 81 and feel so lucky to have been a child during the absolute prime of children's TV shows. We had so many amazing Canadian kids TV shows, including Today's Special.
Fun fact: the department store scenes were filmed after hours at a real department store named Simpson's at their flagship location in downtown Toronto.
OMG that is so cool! I wonder if you can see certain parts of the store in the show's scenes.
@@robwalton2007 Most of the show was filmed in a studio (I met some former production members), but some scenes involved the former Simpsons store on Queen Street (Toronto, Ontario). The building is now home to the flagship location of department store Hudson's Bay, as well as Saks Fifth Avenue which occupies part of the east side of the million square foot building. The former toy department is now Saks designer menswear.
Thank you for sharing
well seeing as though he could only come alive at night i say to you DDDDUUUUHHHHHHH
Puts me right back into my old house where I grew up. Half playing outside & riding my bike in the sun and this would be running on TV always in the background with “pinwheel pinwheel spinning around!” I can visualize my old house. Puts a big lump in my throat.
Same dude. They tore that old house down but it will stand forever in my memory
Yes me too
I remember King Rollo on Pinwheel.
When I was little I always thought the security guard's hair was made out of french fries.
😂
Holy shit, I'm not alone, lol. I always used to think that too.
i used to say he had spaghetti hair...😄😄😂😂😂
Johnson Steele Did you also used to think that the Epcot Center ball at Disney World was a gigantic golf ball?
Lol yup I think everybody thought Epcot was a big tennis ball but it was always rumored there was an roller coaster inside of it
I think this is one of the first shows I ever watched as a kid! This gives me goosebumps because I couldn't remember what it was. All I remembered was a mannequin going up an escalator. I can't believe I found this!!! Then the hocus pocus and the song bring everything back. Man this is so nostalgic it hurts. This and that show Pinwheel from Nickelodeon do that to me.
DEFINITELY Pinwheel! All of those little stop motion shorts like Hattytown & cartoons like Emily
Man if I close my eyes and listen to this for a brief second i go back to childhood..
This was one of my favorite, favorite kid shows! God bless the 1980's!
Omg..I watched this every mourning during the summer. Best times ever...
This song just popped into my head and I remembered all the great feelings I had watching this as a child. I can already feel my anxiety melting away.
My father's cousins in Canada actually produced this show. One of my favorite childhood memories almost 25 years ago was meeting the cast and being on the set. Sweet show, and I wish I knew where to see it still...
Do you know if much of the show was filmed in the actual Simpsons store? I'd be curious to talk to the family members, I'm sure they have interesting stories about the show.
@@craigpatterson4056 dude, he made that comment 14 years ago. He's not going to respond.
How high were they
Man I miss being a kid
I just miss the 80s!
me too i use to watch this show right after pinwheel back in the days
this was my show...good memories...😀😀😀
holy cow! someone else besides me remembers pinwheel
As long as it's in the 80s.
my favorite show as a child. what i wouldnt give to go back!
Hadn't heard this since the mid 80s when I was 5-6 years old, and still remembered at least 90 percent of the song word for word. Lol. This really took me back. 🙂
Jeff was my very first tv crush. Watching the episodes now, I can see why. I'm in love again!
I'm sure he'd be considerably flattered that someone as hot as you finds him attractive. ;)
Is Jeff the puppet?
Jeff is the human who is a mannequin sometimes.
The mannequin named Jeff was played by Jeff Hyslop.
Wow! I haven't thought about this show in over 30 years until it popped up in my recommend videos. It really makes you realize how fast time flys by.
It's been so long since a tear has left my eyes. this show brought back this inner feeling of peace and bliss. it was my all time favorite when I was 4.
Sheesh my Childhood has just slapped me in the face asking me why i took so long to remember this show.
lol Seriously, this was one of those I was too young to really even understand it, but I loved watching it and somehow remember it kind of deals.
Man...if u watched this ur childhood was good. Shows aint no way near what they used to be. Back then we actually learned something! Now and days they learn how to be 16 and pregnant.
Kulena Bell OMG yes! i could not agree with u more!!! i miss the good old days! and whats funny was ya didnt know u were learning while watching these shows! which i LOVE! LOL
Yup
Amen to that! wouldn't be the man I am today if it wasn't for this show! and Mr. Dressup, Fred Penners Place, Under The umbrella Tree, The Elephant Show... omg I could go on and on!
Kulena Bell toooooo true
yes. I was a little kid in the 80's so I remember it well :)
I was obsessed with this show when I was a kid in the 80s and made my mom buy me a hat like the mannequin.
Was the show called today's special
Right after i sent it. I saw the name at the top..ugh
This show would have probably stayed hidden in the lost tunnels of my memory, and the instant it was mentioned on The Leftovers, it all seemed as clear as day. What a great childhood reference in an amazing current show!
Can someone clear things up for me, what are leftovers and what do they have with Today’s Special?
@@lm9301 is the cast of the show still around
The Leftovers brought me here...
I used to watch this show every morning on NickJr, at my babysitter's house. Coincidentally, my old babysitter departed on Oct.14...
One of my favorite kid shows of all time. I was so happy when it came on.
Yes me to
I grew up in Canada watching shows like this. Now I live in my parents country and miss Canada like never before. Will head back home soon.
This show was exactly that, special. Omg real tears🥺you never realize growing up the last episode you're gonna watch before you grow up or out of something will be the last. Man...90s kids, we had it good. ❤Was really not expecting to cry like this.
aww!omfg I remember this! finally after like 28 years I finally see it again. I knew I wasn't crazy for remembering a show with a Manikin that comes to life and a talking rat lol
I saw episodes of this show back in the day and this theme song sticks in my mind stronger than any other song in it. This theme had no right slapping this hard!! Love it!
Almost shed a tear, I recall watching this while my grandmother made us breakfast. Thanks RUclips
I so remember this, I loved it! And Math Net, and Reading Rainbow and OMG so many. xD
i wish i was young again, only times i was happy
It was something about the 80s. It was more special than other decades somehow, with a different feeling in the air. We all miss our childhoods dude, all the time. But life is ok man, and we're lucky to even be here. Find a way to make yourself happy. You can be happy. It's a choice you have to make.
Ryan Merritt absolutely!!
Love this show when i was a child i watched this show everyday
this is like one of the first television shows I remember seeing on television ever
"It's all clear, the customers have all gone home" Which maybe you should have checked before you locked the front door....
Retail hasn't changed in thirty years. You always get a lingerer.
Don't You Ever Wished That This and Other Old School PBS shows was on Netflix?.
Jane-Anne Doe this is not a PBS show it's a Canadian show use to love love love this show especially the part where the man comes to life that was my most favorite part of the show for some reason lol
But it was shown on PBS in the States. For a lot of people (myself inclined) it is one of the shows that made PBS great.
my PBS stations, KUED in Salt Lake City and KBYU in Provo, both aired it!
Jane-Anne Doe agreed
GunterJPN PBS did not air this show in the States, Nickelodeon did that.
You may have seen it on PBS, but I remember seeing this on Nickelodeon.
I saw it first during the Golden Age Of Nickelodeon (the 80s)
Then seeing it on the local PBS station. (WDCN, Nashville, TN.)
I saw this show on TVO.
Yes me too on nicklodeon

Born in 78 and wow.. I really had totally forgotten about this! Totally nostalgic
Omg I remember this . It was one of my favorites. I was 6 also.
The Leftovers brought me here. Brings me back to my childhood.
LOL Oh, my god, I haven't seen this since I was 6 years old! I had to look up "obscure 80s kid's shows" to find the name of this show. This is great!
+Autumn Riley I would have to agree with you, because I too haven't seen this in years, seeing this and other old school PBS shows is like seeing an old friend I haven't seen in years, God I wish that there was a Network that Only airs Old School PBS shows like this one, because Kids today don't even know what good shows are anymore, all that's on now is that, Fucking Paw Patrol, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, etc. etc.
+Janie Doe
i neva hurda no show calld "Fucking Paw Patrol" wher u see dat onna Playboy chanel? smh
+Autumn Riley I'm with you there, this brings back so many memories of being an 80's/90's kid. I wish they had a special channel for these kinds of shows.
Me, too!
RIP Nerene thank you for making my childhood a memorable one.
RIP, dear Jodi.
You brightened many kids' days, and we thank you.
Nerene Virgin (Jodie) has passed away, R.I.P. Nerene, thank you for all the memories
ahhh such beautiful memories
I remember every single move and word and moment of this theme song (I say as I wipe tears off my keyboard)
Man I remember when my next door neighbor would watch after me during the day, hanging out with her son who was the same age. We would watch this show, along with the other Nickelodeon lineup of the day. This is some nostalgia like you wouldn’t believe
This used to be my favourite show when I was little, I really loved the theme song and Sam, he was so enthusiastic. I miss Today's Special.
I had no idea that sam was a puppet when i was a kid. wow
Jade Khaos
I was a pretty stupid kid ;)
☢TruckMafk TM™" he's just like all the human puppets on Under the Umbrella Tree. My little sister thought Mrs. McMurtry was a real human too
☢TruckMafk TM™" HE IS NOT A PUPPET! How dare you. :P
Omg! under the Umbrella Tree!! Fred Penners Place...and of course...Mr Dressup!
Lol me neither
This was my favorite show when I was a kid. It was aired every Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6:30 PM EST.
Always looked forward to this show on Nickelodeon. Just hard to believe how fast time flies. :(
2016 and I still know the all the words lol
Man I seriously miss being a kid the 80's were fun and this was one of my shows.
It's weird hearing this for the first time in a long time and still remembering the words and the inflections they say the words in.
I'm sure Jodi felt really safe with a puppet security guard whose eyes were constantly closed and whose hair and mustache looked like soggy French fries.
Andy Portico And had human hands.
I think he was just blind and the store felt sorry for him. Either that or they were waiting to fire him and cancel his pension, but thought maybe he would just fall down escalator stairs and that would solve the problem for them. Also that store had one hell of a rodent problem.
Holy crap! And I thought I was the only one whom believed Sam’s mustache was really a mess of Wendy’s french fries!!!
LOL
Who's here for Leftovers?
Д-р Манхэттен holy shit dude thought I was the only one
Д-р Манхэттен That Scuba Diving ending and the Ocean Sound throughout the closing credits was so damn creepy!
Now when I rewatch it I'm going to be thinking of this song.
Д-р Манхэттен me! that show is amazing and I knew someone else would come here. glad I'm not the only one
yep! Just seen certified.... Amazing show...
RIP Laurie
Holy hell, I feel old!
One of my favorite shows growing up and probably my first exposure to Canadian TV, until Degrassi. Such awesome memories.
I vaguely remember this show from when I was probably two or three. Lived in the US my whole life, so it used to be on in the US back in the early 80's as well.
Wow! I completely forgot about this show - but that song brought it all back! Weird to think that the opening credits used to be almost _two minutes_ long. Almost 1/10th of the whole program devoted to the theme song. But they were so memorable.
New episodes also aired on Nickelodeon in the US, which is how many of us watched it as well. I had no idea it was from Canada.
Life and time I so precious...how the years go by. If I only had a Time Machine I would go and never come back and spend every moment with my mom. RIP MOMA 7-25-16😔😥😢
I had a little crush on Jody when was I a kid
I always thought sam the security guard's hair was a dry mop!
My sister and i would watch this every mourning it was a treat to get cable to watch Nickelodeon during this time .im 44 now and 6 year old me still remembers this
Makes me think of being at home sick in the 80s. Watching this and Pinwheel.
did anybody come here because the TV show the leftovers on HBO?! tonight's episode mention this TV show theme song and I just had to check it out because i never heard of this show before.
The store must not have had cameras if they were able to keep Jeff a secret.
The security guard was blind, Jodie was actually homeless and lived in the store while working there, the mouse was a mutant having survived a nuclear waste spill in the sewers and Jeff ain't talking to nobody if you knock that dumb looking hat off of his head.
And they never really tried to keep it a secret from people they would meet
In one episode, Jeff was allergic to flowers and Muffy the Mouse had a cold.
We lived close to school back in 1987 and my mother would bring me home for lunch. I always used to watch this every day.
Well this brought up memories I had long forgotten.
I remember them upgrading Muffy's mousehole with an external balcony and an elevator mid-way through the show. What I never understood (even as a kid), you're at a department store, wouldnt you be concerned if you saw a mousehole with its own elevator?
Not in a magical department store!
It was in the pet department, so...
Muffy's mousehole 😂
Muffy > Lambchop.
I have been a fan with this show.
31 here!! OMG I remember sitting over my grandmas house begging to watch!!! RETRO PBS!!!!
Pure gold, I still remember my favorite episode, where the wizard came back for the cap, and they had to rescue it before Jeff turned for good.
Nerene Virgin, beloved star of ‘Today’s Special,’ dies at 77
I like to think that it's why some of us grew up to be so open minded :)
It's so sad that TVO is making so many programming cuts. There will never be anything else like this on television. Thanks for uploading
I remember this show this really one great bring me back to the good old days
Such a great show.....doesn't seem so long ago...miss those care free days 😢
"Coast is clear, customers have all gone home now" That means if they didn't Sam, you'd have locked them all in.... good for you?
And the thing is they really didn’t keep Jeff a secret from the people they would meet
Did I really just sing the whole opener?
I can't imagine what my childhood would have been like without TVOntario. They, and PBS, were the true experts of their time at making television into something meaningful and educational for kids.
Born in 85. This was one of my favourite shows as a kid. 😊
Sam from Today's Special taught me more about computers than going to college.
Chance Turcotte That moment when you find out the TXL series computer Sam used was just an old Apple //e sitting next to a color TV....

Oh crap. I was born in 86. I remember watching this before I moved to florida in the 90s. I've been wondering about this show forever
My brother and I called this show the Muffy Mouse show. I still remember some episode where they go to a grocery store...

@@sarahsimpkins1311 i had forgot about those. The 80s were a great time to be alive.

Sam looks around and see's if all the customers are all gone. However before he did that, he already locked the doors. Shouldn't he of looked around before he locked the doors? He could've locked some customers in and they would eventually find out about Jeff coming to life and the mouse living there.
That's when you have to kill them.
one of my favs as a child! i never knew it was aired in canada first..
Wow, I remember this show! One of my favorites as a kid! I don't really remember the theme song too much, just the "Today's Special" announcement at the end. What a blast from the past!
