Honestly, I think you are into something here. You make a great duo explaining these skills. This is seriously the best wheelie tutorial I have seen. You really understood and addressed my own fears. Having Kara's feedback must help. Love the solution of first practising it while jumping off the back!
@@waynefisher1544 hmm... I personally think that wheelies are easier on a fully... sounds weird but you get the pop you need from the damper and once you're up it eliminates the smaller bumps from the terrain. The only thing I noticed which was harder was side to side balancing. The damper kicks a bit, that's not bad because you can use the brake for the backwards pop but it actually kicks to the sides too and that makes staying straight a bit harder. It basically feels the same weird way when you're trying to back wheel hop a fully. It kicks backwards, but it also kicks to the sides. Pretty hard to get used to... don't know if you noticed that too, but that was my experience on the back wheel xD
Fantastic progression! Really love this content from you, Tom. I've used your tutorial videos a lot over the years to pick up new skills and really like your style of teaching. Ben Cathro, you and Seth from Berm Peak are, imo, the go-to youtube coaches. Great work by KJ there too. Coincidentally, I'm also currently trying to teach myself to wheelie having never learned when i was a kid. People make it look easy, but it's not. It takes a lot of practice and determination and progress is slow. And fair play to KJ - leaning off the back of your bike and sitting in that tipping point at first is a scary place to be!
Nice work! These kinds of videos are really useful to have in the mix. Besides being great to learn from they also help with setting reasonable expectations.
I also can't wheelie well, so that was great to watch. I followed Kara's channel months ago because I'm at a similar riding experience level, so I'd love to see more videos like this.
Great progress Kara! I've practiced wheelies and manuals for years and will never come close to Toms freak skills. Takes a lot of core and shoulder strength too , so exercising that stuff helps a lot. When a wheelie is long and smooth oooh baby it's so sweet.
Really really enjoyed this and looking forward to seeing Kara's further progression! I've always struggled to learn wheelies and manuals because I'm terrified of leaning back, but this gives me ideas on how to get past that fear.
You two are inspirational, I’ve been riding for 25 plus years now and mastered the wheelie years ago but the way Tom broken it down reminded me of Hans Rey on video I had as a kid 😁. Kara your riding has come on so far, you two are a perfect shredding couple 😁.
Well done Kara and yes more wheelies please in fact make them an update on every video please so we see her progress. I’m going to start mine too. Although I’ve never used back brake I’ll try it.
Great vid. I hate wheelies because I can't do them. I'm taking notes and I'll be following any helpful instructional session videos in the future. Brilliant 👍
Good one! Learning by addressing some of the sources of fear is great. I've wondered why you haven't done that with learning how to bail from skinnies. There was the slam on Sam's backyard skinny, and then I remember a few comments on other skinnies along the lines of Kara not knowing how to bail from them. The logical response seemed to be to learn how to bail from them, and it would make another good video (or series).
Excellent video and progression, impressive on both counts. Your instruction videos are what switched me on to you in the first place and it is really good to see someone improve as well as the master telling us what to do :) Can't wait to fit some normal pedals to the bike and have a go :)
I use parking spots to measure my Manuals. I can do one LOL You are just amazing Kara. Bombing hills, Jumps, skateparks, Wheelies, And Bike Control. Great job Tom and Kara
Good progress Kara I’ve never mastered it Tom and Jack were able to wheelie from a very young age they were the cool kids keep going your get there 👍👍👍
I was so excited when you made it off with two feet the first time. After that it became easier than jumping off a treadmill =P Surprised all that progress happened in one day. Jumping off confidence and brake coverage practice. Then couch potato flopping back and remembering not to actually forget to jump off if needed ;) Then the gradual slow pedal input. All great tips and I want to see day 7 when you master it.
One thing i used to do was to set the pedal a little higher and from stationary with one leg push the pedal to get the bike somewhere around balance point while keeping my bum on the seat and try to get the other foot on and sit there at balance point. This is a great way to learn to take both feet on and off the pedals and to know roughly where to balance your body. The rest is all rear brake control and smoothness of pedalling during the wheelie
Great progress in a single day! Do you think you could do some more coverage on manuals? I know you did some in the past with the manual machine and such, would be good to see KJ progress through wheelies and then mannys :)
@@TomCardy but maybe you two should wait with the manuals until she really gets the rear brake feel dialed. I mean, you probably think that way too but I just wanted to point that out because a heavy hit on the back because of falling over the rear could scare her off. But she really does make extremely good progress! Stoked on the next videos of her riding better and better, I knew she would get there fast! To be fair, she probably has one of the best teachers to learn basically everything 😂
Great work by both coach and student. I feel like once you throw your weight back straighten and lock your arms straight which will cause your weight to be back more and easier to hold the wheelie.
these are great help tutorials. i believe Kara is in a place a lot of use are in, the only problem is we don't all have a Tom, lol. i think if you can continue with all sortes of basic vids that could help 100s 0f riders. keep up the great work
I think committing is one of the hardest things. I was in the park practicing manualing the other day. If I didn't fully mentally commit than I didn't get high enough or I messed up and went to the side. For me accepting the risk of falling off the back is a big hurdle to get over. I can do it sometimes but sometimes I doubt my ability to save myself off the back and that is what I think holds me back the most from constantly committing. Great feeling though when you can get your wheel up for a couple seconds or even loop out.
Just went out and practiced doing wheelies for the first time in a while. Looped out for a couple times managed to stay up for a couple seconds a few times. I got a bit too ambitious and fell on my back 😂. No pain no gain ig
The manual is a great way to nail the balance point thing... maybe revisit the manual machine concept in a new video with KJ getting further back, off the seat more to find that place and experience and learn that feeling and play safely with holding the bike up in a stationary and stable angle...
I might just be stupid but it appears they have their brake levers opposite of everyone else in the world with the front on the left instead of right. Do y’all also switch the levers on motorcycles as well because that would really be difficult to adjust to given the throttle, just wondering?
I'm learning a manual first because my enduro isnt ready to ride yet. And on the ebike its frustrating as hell , learning a wheelie on a normal bike is definitly the way to go
I can lift it up any stuff and the confusing part is only being able to pedal 1-2 every pull and in the morning when i practiced i got it pretty high but i cant seem to keep it any tips??
i get to the balance point easily but then bottle it if i feel i'm going over, sucks cos when i was a young un i would wheelie all day. oh please document the journey :)
@@TomCardy what the best way to finding our balance point?im am easy to wheelie my motorcycle but not in my mtb lol.by the way really appreciated your reply tom
When I first got my ebike I tried a nice normal slow wheelie up the back yard and the bike instantly tossed me. Dont try it in turbo unless you are already moving along at a good speed.
Hi Kara. Hi Tom. Craig the unqualified to comment on exactly that same reason Kara has about that trick the Wheelie. From Craig the creative spectator's thoughts about the trick. Tom is there any way that you can ride in the Wheelie position letting Kara lean back on your front wheel hence the Tom/Kara wheelie;) Doubliscious.
Kara is very close to reaching the balance point zone....she's still a bit scared of flipping over, but once she feels that strange sensation of being in the balance point (its a Eureka! moment), and how wide it actually is, that fear will dissipate almost entirely. Then, it's just practice!
She would have totally had it at the end, I think, if she would have just remembered to look straight ahead and not down…but really great work and keep at it, never give up!

Great work Kara . Keep progressing. Think a hard tail bike will make wheeling a bit better.
