Toby is, in my mind, is not diminished in any way. Her character arc is an exploration of the intricacies of love, intimacy and trust. I admire how she explores the complications and problematizes the “happily ever after” meta narrative, as is reflected throughout the trilogy as a whole. It’s quite postmodern in this respect. Thank you for your compelling reading.

I always found it bizarre the amount of levity the introduction sequence where Ren and Amanda are "greeted" by the Crakers was described. Reading it I got this feeling of American sitcom misunderstanding but then it's later revealed that Ren is pregnant, meaning the Crakers full on raped her before anyone stopped them?! Anyways, good book, but felt it was the weakest in the trilogy.

Both Ren and Amanda are relieved that their children are half-Craker rather than half-Painballer, most especially Amanda. It was, for sure, a rape. But unlike the Painballers, it wasn't an act of intentional violence. It wasn't born of human malice. And they did add to their culture the question of "are you truly blue?" They were created to be as much like rabbits as humans, and they meant no harm. And they were able to learn to not act on impulse. The Painballers couldn't have learned that lesson, and they as a group were genuinely right to question if a Painballer's child might also be a psychopath, when you consider how small society was at the time.
