Process (Intuitive) Art for Self Care

- This video is a demonstration of mindfulness and the creative process through the use of intention setting, art making with available materials, and witness (a.k.a. stream of consciousness) writing.
Process art is the act of creating art and staying focused on the process itself (versus the outcome of the painting or drawing). Creating art focused on intuitive choices of color, shape, and movement keeps me present and attuned to what is happening right now - not ruminating on the past or anxious about the future. It is a simple, accessible way to promote positive mental health, lower anxiety, and ease depression. Besides the self care aspects, it's also a fun way to create with zero pressure to perform. The act of creating is the goal. If it turns out beautiful too, it's the cherry on top.
INTENTION is a statement of what I want, but it is written as if I have already achieved it. "I am calm" instead of "I want to be calm", for example.
WITNESS WRITING is a way to listen to the version of myself that is so often crowded out by the business of everyday life, social media, and Netflix. Non-stop, stream of consciousness writing for a given time period - often only 5-10 minutes.

"i really cant ruin the world with paint".......best thing i have heard all week!!
Haha! It’s important to keep these things in perspective 😉😂
Loved this so much, both the written words and the painting!

Lovely. Just right.

Bonito trabajo....
Thank you! ❤️❤️❤️
Sweet Jackie thank you so much for your amazing talent and sharing your videos. Your video came on to my feed last nigh and I'm so happy to have discovered you. I watch a good deal of videos by many artists and I have to say, yours is one of the best. I love that you do voice over; your voice is so soothing. So many others go on and on rambling about nonsense. You're to the point, direct and give such great take aways. All the best to you in the coming new year!
Oh that makes me so happy to hear - thank you, Veronica! Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a happy new year! ❤️❤️❤️
I really enjoyed your video. Thank you
I’m so glad!
I really love how this turned out! Its a great pic. Thanks for sharing and your encouragement to JUST LAY DOWN PAINT.🥰
❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for sharing your approach. An inspiring video!
You’re more than welcome, Betsy - thank you for watching! ❤️
Wow so inspiring!
❤️❤️❤️
Your paintings are inspiring, and I enjoy your messages. Thank you!
You are so welcome :)
I’m SO thankful to have found you! I’ve been looking for someone to guide me in how to use art to process past trauma/work through life stuff. I have wanted to figure out how to get to those places I can’t find words for. I found your parade video. My goodness! I’m SO sorry! Thinking of your family and community as the anniversary approaches. Thank you for sharing your gifts to help others so beautifully!❤️
Julie, you’ve come to the right place - I’m so glad you’re here! Thank you for your kind words and for thinking of us as the 4th comes around again. ❤️ I’m so looking forward to meeting you in September and sharing the process with you live and (virtually) in person!
@@jackieschomburgart Thank you so much for your response! I am incredibly thankful for the opportunity in September and looking into all of your other resources as well. I’m especially drawn to collage, so I’m really excited about your use of that medium. Best wishes as you enter this coming week.❤️
Wonderful! I’m so excited to be returning to the collage workshop this fall - it’s my favorite of the Brave Art & Wellness workshops! It’s always fascinating to see how much we can learn about ourselves by arranging and connecting found images ❤️
@@jackieschomburgart Oh, I love hearing that working with collage is your favorite of the series!
it is much harder to control something that has been taped to a tree branch....second best!
Agreed!
The sketchbook you’re using looks like a Speedball watercolour journal… or is it another type? Awesome video. So natural and encouraging.
I’m so glad you enjoyed the video ❤️ It’s a Canson mixed media sketchbook ☺️
Love your videos. Any advice on how to add the gel meduim to collage papers without it getting messy. Mine always get dirty from the paint on the collage papers when i apply it to the collage papers. They always end up looking muddy and dirty.
Hmm...is your paint 100% dry before you add the collage? If not, wait till it's dry or use a heat gun/hair dryer to dry it before adding medium. I haven't found any acrylic paints to be problematic with bleeding color once dry. If you're using any water soluble paints, I'd suggest switching to acrylic and trying it then.
Another great one Jackie! BTW I feel like I know you from somewhere and as I thought about it I had to wonder if you ever do freelance work for SC when they do corporate events. Our organization had one in the not too distant past - virtual - out of Chicago and I can't help but wonder if that's where I might feel like I know you from?! Regardless, your demeanour and personality are warm and captivating - as are your videos. Be well!
Haha! Nope - I haven’t done any events with Second City. Years ago I did improv in Libertyville but just in a theater - no corporate events. I used to work in the corporate world - perhaps it was work-related. What kind of work do you do?
@@jackieschomburgart I'm in HR with one of the banks in Canada. Maybe it's "cosmic-goo" like "energy attracts" and all that.🤣
❤️❤️❤️
Well, in that case, cheers to the cosmic goo! ☺️
Jackie, loving your videos, you are giving me so much inspiration. I am quite knew to collage, can I ask what painters tape you are using. I just love that frame that it gives the piece.
Thanks so much! ❤️ I’ve tried a bunch of tapes and don’t like most of them 😆 The best ones I’ve found are just called “low-tack art tape” or just low-tack tape.
What type of brush are you using?
Happy to tell you about my brush, but need to know the time stamp of when it appears in the video so I know which brush you’re asking about ☺️
Lovely video Jackie - I liked the set up and voice over while you painted
Thanks so much for watching, Rachael!
