Impressive to see you getting right back on the horse and riding it like that Steve, what a way to come back, well done to you and everyone who made this possible !
I can see all you guys care about each other! It’s a cool deal I don’t hear about pushing shoving and fighting, just guys who want to race, the good and the bad! Love your sportsmanship!
Steve you need to add a spintron to your tool lineup to test find the reason for these types of harmonic and frequency issues. Especially whats breaking these valve springs on your SMX's
For some reason, it only just occurred to me why it's a good thing you have power windows. I'm laughing inside picturing you trying to reach the handle if you didn't. I don't know why I find this so funny but I do.😊
I just noticed the price of Diesel on the sign behind Steve, I filled up my Duramax yesterday here on the central coast of California, San Luis Obispo to be exact..... 5.75 a gallon here 3.45 a gallon there in Michigan.
The whole valve spring issue is very interesting. I really think it’s a metallurgy and spring design thing that is being highlighted by Drag n Drive style racing. Before this style of racing you would make your runs, trailer the car to the next event and race again. If you broke a spring you would just assume it’s related to a hard pass and replace it. In order to handle the pressure of high lift cams I would expect the spring manufacturer to use specific spring metal material that can handle the high loads for short time periods. Specific drag race conditions. Now we are also asking these things to withstand hours of constant operation at specific rpm’s. This whole new form of drag racing I predict will cause the design of valve springs to evolve into a specific design (metal composition and spring rate) that caters to the Drag n Drive style. It would be interesting to hear what your spring supplier thinks about this.
Ayy Steve, you need to get an SMX on a Spintron, test some different springs. I mean, it's a bummer to have to cut a hole out of a block to do it, but you can't beat the info that they can gather lol. That's such a shame about the Tom-Clark race, it really looked like Tom just straight went for a ride up top. That's the "it is what it is" part about racing though, there's only so much you can do, this stuff is just going to happen on occasion. But congrats on the W, nice to see the wagon getting back at it! Some headaches, but a W is a W!
The theory on the valve spring failure is mint… 👍🏻 Valve springs are black magic… To have one fail like that is very odd… Unless it’s p*ssed from that constant certain rpm where it’s oscillating and p*ssed… lol
Feel bad for Clark and Bailey . Like you, i'm wondering if those valve springs have a resonant frequency issue and you might have just found the frequency. That might explain the issues others have had . Wondering if you can check ones on your car to see if they have internal stresses, micro cracking ? My thought is: It might be cumulative , frequency over time builds failure point into the springs. Wondering also if a coating would move the resonant point up or down enough that the springs then be fine- if its a resonate issue. Fascinating issue really , other than the money and danger to engine, but the issue itself is very interesting and your thought on it being harmonics is surely worth researching . Got a Spintron in the back room with all the sensors etc? Grin. We have track percolation here in Texas as well, just sucks when realization of it is by someone getting loose and having a wreck. Just sucks.
I like his Video's cause unlike others he tells what has happened and why, also he seems real, a real person, not some folk-hero wearing a black cape and saving damsels in distress. and you can learn stuff from his video's (he warns about this in his video's).
Hi I'm Steve Morris. My car was on fire and in the wall just over a month ago. Its my first time out with the rebuilt car & I won the drag and drive event. 😂 Boss!
I was like, that's weird, I've never seen them test the chute deployment before, but maybe he wanted to be safe and not be like Bailey in his Camaro a while back. Then when he said the 5.5 chute deployment, I realized that must have been the ONLY parameter he set was time, and not time + MPH.
@@FastSS02 I don't remember if it was Cleetus or Alex who killed the brakes on Tom's car when the chutes failed on their licensing run.......maybe Cleetus, but it made me think that Steve purposely tested them without telling anyone he was going to do it. Cleetus and George have also ended up in the sand/dirt at the end of the track before, so "failure is always an option" as Adam Savage says.
Dude! Perhaps I just never noticed b4 but...Seeing your wife out ALSO bustin her butt to help brings a smile to my face. You got a good one! I don't think she was in the videos before........I would have noticed a woman hanging around. Not only is she easy on the eyes, but she is into racing and cars and is helping him. The dynamic with Kyle (spelling) also doing videos and the family thing is great. I love the Kyle videos and wish I was as lucky as Steve and could find a partner in life. Cosworth had a valve spring issue in F1. At a certain RPM, the harmonics of the valve springs were such that they would fracture the metal. At lower RPM. Not higher.
My grandmother's 90's wagon, issued by pick n save in SoCal as a company vehicle, wasn't anything like this........well it looked almost the same but in blue. She bought it when she left that job and drove it in retirement and up until cancer took her in 2019. Watching these videos reminds me of her and if she was still alive, I would stop by and show her a SM video on my phone of what a wagon could do. My grandfather had a 70 torrino cobra jet and a few other muscle cars, so they were much like the typical people who grew up around hot rodding and could appreciate this kind of stuff.
Better mark that box -1 so you know its not a full set. Been seeing alot of valve spring issues from bottom to top even streetcar stuff doing it. Us americans need to keep some of our own steel vs buying from other countries after selling them ours. Very little of our stuff stays here.
Lots of general aviation aircraft have RPM ranges that you are not to run them in. They create frequencies that stress fracture and make things unhappy.
Great video. Unfortunate for Tom and Clark. Amazing how you isolated the event and told your story of your experience as you worked to improve the Wagon.
Although you mentioned it’s not the tracks fault for the mishap at the big end, I would think the track crew knowing the water could be an issue after rain storm would be more vigilant About track conditions.
I think you are on to a problem not previously thought about in many different issues with engine diagnostics. Harmonics has to play a much larger role in many different problems.
How about me too, I survived cancer, I have no appendix or gallbladder, and 5 strokes, at 37 years old, but I WILL walk again, it's going to take a while tho

Question Mr. Morris, is Fueltech really that much better than the Holley? Your opinion would be appreciated.
Don't be leaving those doors open on your car while Cleetus and James are around 😅
It's something that many of us have always wanted to do lol.
