Excellent video, but the theology at 0:58 is flawed. The Church Militant is not in triumph over sin, rather the church militant is quite literally engaging in conflict with sin. The Church Triumphant are the saints and people in heaven, who where the ones who managed to triumph over sin and reach Heaven.

We are discussing the painting and its narrative and employed these two terms in ways that are a bit of a shorthand but nevertheless consistent with their use in art history when examining such imagery.

In my humble opinion, the composite essence of devil's character at least visually bears resemblance to the structural features of initials of medieval gospels and bibles, some of them composed by different zoomorphic and anthropomorphic body parts and details, either swallowing or beating each other.

03:14 Let's not forget the Spanish ruled the Netherlands for most of the Renaissance so it isn't surprising to find Netherlands influences in a Spanish painting. The angel's shield is a nod to the then flag of the Low Countries. Maybe the devil here is the oncoming tide of the Reformation?

It was sold in Barcelona in 1955. Many works of art were separated from their original context when Napoleon suppressed the monasteries, but that is only one possibility.
