The Carpenters, that voice, what a talent, sadly missed.
Such a tragic story
Her voice is so hauntingly beautiful and on top of it, the most talented, female drummer, I know besides, a young Japanese girl named Yoyoka
@@FUBAR1986 : Sina
Bought me to tears just hearing her beautiful voice 💕
Karen Carpenter remains the best female vocalist ever. Everything she sings is perfection!
Absolutely Period
Also the way she conveys the songs. What an angel
Without a doubt!
Hi Jenny, i just love that last note.
You should hear Eva Cassidy singing “Somewhere over the Rainbow”. Or anything else. She too is incredible. And 😢 gone too soon.
Got chills with that first line she sang. There will never be another like Karen Carpenter.
That's for sure. ❤
😢
Happens with every song she sings
Always great to see Brad super animated by the songs that really hit him.
Brads has been pretty upbeat lately. Getting ready and excited about being a father. 👍
Exactly!! That got me too. I loved it. I was thinking Brad is letting his softer side in. That is something I've noticed since around the time they found out they were having a boy.
This really hit Brad
She was first a drummer and then singer. Such a beautifully haunting voice. 💙
I grew up to be a metal head, but this is the music of my childhood, and I still love it. It makes me smile sitting here watching you two take in the greatness of the Carpenters 48 years later. 💖
Well said.
My Mom listened to soft rock in the car when she'd drive me around, I know all of it. Also Metal/Grunge are my core but glad I'm well rounded.
The vibe is from Richard Carpenter. He's the producer. He was one of the first to use the 8 track to have Karen sing lead and harmony. He always did the arrangements. But none of it would have happened without that voice. Still one of the greatest.
One of the greatest vocalists in music history. Her pitch, range and vibrato give me shivers.
Our Karen.
Gifted, Shy, Fragile..
She took a simple Paul Williams song and made it immortal.
Godspeed for one of the purest voices to ever grace pop.
My favorite songwriter! Paul really wrote amazing songs. Check out, “The Gift (Angel of Life) One of his lesser-known songs, but a beautiful beautiful song
Gold standard right here, the emotion she conveys is heartbreaking, such an intimate production and feels like she's pouring her heart out
Karen was so beautiful and her voice was just angelic. We lost her way to soon but her legacy lives on through great reactions like this. RIP Karen We miss you.
They called her "One Take, Karen." She never rehearsed on the way to studio. Just nailed it the first time. And the drums too at the same time. She became the lead singer only reluctantly. Her home was behind the drums. The rest is just so sad. No one compares to the talent this then 20-year-old woman had!
I am SOoo glad you picked this video. One of the rare times we get to hear her angelic voice as she's doing what she loved, playing the drums. Check her out covering Dancin in the Streets when she was only 18. She shows her drum chops better in that one.
I haven't seen a reaction to that one yet, I've suggested it a few times.
@@ganggreen9012 maybe better, especially if you know the songs, is the live, outdoor medley of Burt Bacharach songs. It was at some college, and it looked like she was having a ball, though half the spectators looked like zombies.
Karen Carpenter was such an angelic human being.
She had the voice of an Angel 😇 smooth as silk ❤️ Rest In Peace Karen 🙏🏻
Her voice is angelic....unsurpassed.
She had an extraordinary voice. And she was a great drummer as well. I remember where I was, what kind of day it was, everything, when they came on the radio and announced that she had passed. Such a sad day. The first thing that jumps to your mind is that incredible voice. 😇😇😇
Y'all be safe
Karen was the best of the best. No other voice as beautiful as hers.
One of my favourite things about this channel has been witnessing the change in Brad over time. 18 months ago he would have been blank faced and just not getting or feeling this tune and now his face lights up listening to these new genres and artists that he would never have listened to years ago. They say that music is a language that your brain learns and matures to and if you listen to enough, *everybody* will end up understanding and loving jazz. I'm 56 and not quite there yet, I guess I need to listen to more music 😛
@@emtallmoose9436 Not so much gets and appreciates, but it could be melted to the point that you become a vegetable 😛😛
Yes 🥰🥰
The Carpenters are the best! Karen Carpenters definitely left us all way too soon.
She had the most beautiful voice.
Reminds me of being little.
Guys we need more old school Pat Benatar!!
While it's not old school, I'd love to see a review of Pat Benetar / "One Love (Song of the Lion)". Such a constantly overlooked gem.
@@deepsix1827
Poor Linda, such a sad story. Thankfully we have her music.
She too is amazing.
What a beautiful voice she had. Just so pure and easy. Brings tears to my eyes.
The Carpenters were perfect.
Just PERFECT.
Carpenters and Heart.... I listen to them almost every day. Live performances are very good.
after all these years it is crazy how i am still so captivated by her everything! sorely missed!
The best female voice of all time, great accomplished drummer as well, Richard's arrangements just spot on!
I don't know that I've seen Brad get that excited during a review. Been enjoying that sound for over 50 years.
And actually, sometimes I DO enjoy a rainy day. Just enjoying listening to the rain on the roof, watching the water come down and flow, kinda peaceful, especially if you're sitting on a porch of a cabin in the woods. I like the smell of fresh rain.
yep - i miss my front porch - it was awesome -
had a metal roof - and lots of windows and plenty of chairs to sit on -
and we were out in the middle of nowhere - 13 miles to the nearest grocery store
My Dog hates rainy days, so it makes life difficult in our household. He doesn't know Monday from any other day so no issues there.😊
Brad mentioned “vibey”. Karen Carpenter’s voice felt like she was singing directly to you. She was the master of vibe.
she was a beautiful person inside and out will always love her.
Brad is right! SUCH a vibe! And what an incredible voice Karen Carpenter had. The depth! The power! The control! That tone! And bang on the note every single time. No auto tuning here. Just crazy, raw talent! Simply one of the best voices ever!
Her voice is other worldly. So AWESOME
Ahhhhh agreed.... total vibe ...I love Karen so much...best voice ever!!!!
The best female voice of all time
She suffered mental health issues
She thought she was overweight 😢😢
Simply the best singer ever.incredible range, her delivery of her songs is perfection, like a sinatra.story telling in a song...and also an excellent drummer.most singers today are nothing compared to her.
With the Carpenters, less was often more. Understated, yet dynamic.
Karen Carpenter's voice can get any baby to quit crying.
Brad & Lex, you’ll love their “Yesterday One More” and “For All We Know” !!!!
Also, "Superstar."
Those voices from back then sounded so good because they were real and natural..no special effects. And Karens voice was just beautiful.
The Carpenters will always have a special place in my heart. They lived 8 houses down from us growing up and Karen would babysit me and my little brother.
The Carpenters are awesome, her voice is so haunting and perfect.
All I can say is keep going!!! Carpenters are the bomb 😁👍♥️
Lex you hit it on the head. Clean, clear and vibrant... Well ennounceated. You never needed a lyric sheet when Karen sang.
Her last recording "Now" will give goosebumps to your goosebumps.
Pure talent that is timeless. You can listen to their music with your children or your grandparents.
Sure like seeing Brad like this so much!!!!!
She is the only female singer that gives me chills when I hear her. What an amazing talent. RIP Karen, you left us too soon.
The most beautiful ❤️ voice in the history of music male or female!R.I.P. Sweet Karen
Brad, Karen Carpenter IS a princess. You got it :) ..while drumming? (of which, she was extremely talented but that's a story for another time). Yes, sadly missed and unfortunate. Thank you Brad & Lex :)
Karen's smooth as silk vocals, so full of warmth and emotion, never gets old. And there's something special about anyone who can play rhythm while singing melodically; such different, but complimentary, sounds coming from one person is always super impressive. Talk about using your whole body to create music!
The depth of her voice is so cool.
You got it right Brad. Its a vibe. Back in the day, it was full talent and a lot played instruments too. She was a very good drummer too, but sadly they asked her to just be upfront and stop playing the drums.
Did anyone not notice that Karen Carpenter was also playing the drums while serenading us with her beautiful voice?
This is one angel that floats in the air not playing a harp, but playing a drum set and singing belting out songs tell me not that's the top of human musicianship singing and beating notes out with her hands and toes on stretch skins,if I may say so. She was born with a strong heart what An American star!
Purest voice ever.
Most of today's female voices are just screaming. Oh and she had no Autotune or any computer help ... Just raw talent.
Karen had the most hauntingly beautiful voice you'll ever hear. RIP 💚
Voice of an Angel
One of the purist voices ever! Amen!
I turned 16 in 1970. That decade of music has kept me young at heart to this very day.
Just exceptional. Possibly my favorite Carpenters performance. Hard to narrow it down to only one though.
Karen Carpenter had the most beautiful voice I have ever heard.
Her tone... It was like a cello.
Love the Carpenter's. Yes, such a vibe!!
I was a teenager when they hit it big and had to say to my friends how lame they were. Secretly, however, I really liked their songs, and Karen was amazing.
Very true for us in a certain age group. We couldn’t really say out loud how much we loved this music. Just wouldn’t have been cool. But the truth is out there. You spoke it!
Wife here.., This song certainly gives off particular vibes!...Yessss the Harmonica.., brings certain feelings
Yes. The pair of you have come a long way. You are definitely starting to get it. Kudos to you. No oversinging. No auto tune. Just talent.
If an angel could come down from heaven and sing ,it would b Karen carpenter!!!!what a voice!!
When she died so officially did my childhood
The greatest Alto voice ever. It amazed me how she could carry a vibrato that soft and low…
One of the best pure female vocal talents of the 20th Century--good drummer, too.
You will find all their songs are amazing! Such a loss when she died. RIP KAREN CARPENTER
Thanks Brad. So happy you guys can find the stories in the lyrics. 'Adult Contemporary" music has its niche, even today, and the Carpenters are a big part of that scene.
Brother and sister, Richard and Karen Carpenter. She had such an amazing voice. The drums you hear in the background are her playing.
Pure silk. Karen Carpenter had one of the best voices ever.
Richard Carpenter was amazing at putting those arrangements together.
One of the top 5 greatest female voices in history! She left us way too soon.
Yes Brad, definitely a vibe. Karen’s voice always felt like she was singing to you personally. Perfect vibe delivery every time.
Karen had a stunning voice - and her brother Richard's keyboard playing and orchestral arrangement of the songs suited it perfectly. Gone far too soon - RIP Karen.
Glad to see Brad growing in his appreciation of real music. Very gratifying. Carpenters always tug on the heartstrings, (& my favorite bands are Zeppelin and Nirvana... lol).
Raw talent, character, and an incredible amount of hard work and sacrifice.
I think that she had the best female voice ever- so pure, so clear, so smooth.
My favorite female voice, ever. Always brings tears to my eyes
All these years later and I still miss that voice so terribly.
WOW SHE had such a MEAUTIFUL VOICE. Great Reaction Guys
That first pause break got me thinkin' these two had a freaky friday situation or sumn - quite literally lmao
This song was first released in April 1971, and peaked at #1 in the U.S. and Canada. Over 50 years ago, and it still sounds fabulous…all those years ago.
Yeap, you are really getting in the know. Karen's voice is just like the two hands of a mother that pick up the baby bird that fell out of a nest. It always envelops my heart.
Thank you for all your musical discovery Brad and Lex.
karen carpenter is one of only a few voices the planet has experienced as being maternal she sounds like she is a mother singing to her child every time i hear her, such a one off talent. ; )
Karen's voice is so, SO smooth - liquid butter! What an incredible talent (and a fantastic drummer to boot!!) Their music can always put me in the most chill mood. Great reaction.
While I'm not a big fan of the style of music from the Carpenters, Karen's voice is still my favorite of all female vocalists. In fact, my favorite holiday track is "The Christmas Song" by the Carpenters. Highly recommended
Another classic from Paul Williams, with Karen Carpenter’s angelic voice.
For 5+ decades I have loved that voice.
The U.S.charts ,wow,
They could produce all the emotions, all the power.
The first really all knowing
emotive system.
$$$$$ made us cry .
What a voice! This is exactly what she sounded like live.
Her voice is like a great big warm hug.
Dude, this was my life.. 1972, was 8 years old. Very large family so I knew more than I should have. What a time in to be alive in America..
Sometimes song lyrics are written on the fly, and that was the case with a line in this song. Says Paul Williams: "On 'Rainy Days And Mondays' Chuck Kay, who was head of publishing at A&M, said, 'That's a perfect song for The 5th Dimension, let's play it for them.' I said, 'Well, there are a couple of lines that aren't done yet.' He said, 'You'll finish it in the car.' So in the car going over there, I came up with a fill line, which was 'What I've got they used to call the blues.' I didn't have that line done yet, so I wrote it as just a quick fill line, because I wanted to mention the blues, but it was such a hackneyed expression, 'I've got the blues.' So I just wrote, 'What I've got they used to call the blues.' And it actually became my favorite line in the song. I think it's the best line in the song. I met Johnny Mercer once at A&M Records, and he sat down and I introduced myself, 'Paul Williams,' and he shook my hand. And he walked back into the studio where he was mixing, then he stuck his head back out into the hall and he went, 'Paul Williams, 'what I've got they used to call the blues,' that Paul Williams?' I said, 'Yes, sir.' It was funny. It was one of the great moments of my life, to meet Johnny Mercer, who I think was the lyricist's lyricist."
The 5th Dimension passed on this song, but the Carpenters picked it up, giving them their second hit written by Williams and Nichols, who also wrote "We've Only Just Begun"
(Songfacts.com)
Great story! I have loved the Carpenters since Close To You came out. Just outstanding talented musicians. Karen's voice is heaven to the ears and their harmonies are lush and warming.
That's called "Easy Listening" music . Karen had such a beautiful rich voice, clear as a bell.
Have never seen Brad so animated/positive as during the pause.! Thoroughly enjoyed.
Bathing us with vocals, harmonies, and instrumentals........A musical spa! Love this, thanks.
Karen Carpenter is my favorite female singer of all time. hands down.
One of my favorites by them. She was such a sweet soul. Gone way too soon ❤her voice was flawless
Karen made Brad smile, LOL...that's something. ;)
Karen has had that effect on people for 60 years.
