I think the reason they maded into a movie insted of a series was "fear of audience". netflix already made a lot of brilliant series that got canceled after 1 or 2 seasons because of lack of public. this time, they are probably making a test, a movie to introduce the story, the character, the idea, before a big investment and desapointing the audience

  • @locorco1

I loved the books as a kid and I agree that it should have been a tv show since the books were episodic anyways. There was an overarching plot about her trying to find her mother but each book had its own plot and a different mystery for her to solve, all of which were very interesting and could easily have carried an episode or two. The Most of the fun of the series came from how Enola was able to use her more "ladylike" knowledge to her advantage (one book centered heavily on the language of flowers, another on signaling with hand fans, etc.) and I think a tv show would have let them explore that aspect more. It was a really interesting take on "girl power" to see Enola actually finding freedom and community in these more feminine aspects of society that I found super influential as a kid and I wish it got more focus.

I enjoyed Henry Cavill as Sherlock, though I do agree that they wrote him out to be a little bit hollow. I think they established him to be the "cleverer one" - for example when he figures out the chrysanthemums hold meaning without the message from "mother". Maybe because I don't so strongly associate him with Superman since I'm not American. I get that this is sort of an AU so we can take Sherlock's warmer nature with a grain of salt I suppose. HOWEVER, Mycroft's character absolutely infuriated me!! He's shown to be the dumb one, not at all observant. Even within the film's universe, where the rest of the family is sharp as a tac, he's like the slow and stupid one of the lot which makes no sense! If they would have shown him to be a little more on par with Sherlock, I think the stakes would have been higher even on intellectual levels instead of just "legally". There would be more conflict as to who has Enola's best interest at heart. Not to mention Mycroft is supposed to work at M16! He seriously can't be the way he is shown. Like he is not even witty or likeable. And it's too canon dirvergent for me to digest. At least with Sherlock, they have time to develop. They've already ruined Mycroft in my opinion :( I love Sam tho and I hope they do him a little more justice in the upcoming movies.

Joxhua Thomax yeh and like why did they just let her go with all those explosives that she made and that she basically had been planning since Enola was child, would’ve been more interesting and made more sense if something more unexpected happened like if the Lord I forget his name was injured accidentally if they added the scene when her mother set off the explosives, Enola would start to realize more that her mother is crazy and tries to report her even though it’s hard for her to do so, but her mother takes her back to the countryside and has her looked after by two of her members of the purple group they’re in I forget the name, but then Sherlock or Mycroft or both come get her and trick the two women and Enola rides her bike to the Lords home and that’s all I got like maybe her mother is waiting there for her and then the Lords uncle stops her mother from taking her and then her mother runs away but it doesn’t really fit that bit but eh idk

Joxhua Thomax I haven't watched the movie yet out of...nervousness (?) because I had loved the books and was in the exact target demographic for them when they were published. In the books, her mom disappears because she has terminal cancer and wanted to live her final days with the Romani, outside of Victorian aristocratic society. She never tells anyone this, so Enola is only left with a book of clues and a scavenger hunt to money stashes so she could run away herself, and she never gets the opportunity to see her mom again. The mom doesn't actually appear as a character, besides in coded messages they left each other in newspaper advertisements. I think it cheapens the impact of the story for them to reunite.
Edit - just watched it. I feel like they tried to (rightfully) write over the Romani part because it's problematic, but lost the element of her ’alone’-ness - the whole book series and her desperation to find her mother is driven by her wishing for affection from her instead of just lessons on being independent. She never gets this and remains ’alone’, but in their final message, she gets closure in accepting that her mother was showing how she cared in her own way. She gets the ’you're not alone’ closure from her brothers, when they let her live independently without fearing getting captured and sent to finishing school. Even just adding a line that her mother ran away to the suffragette group because she knew her time to live was limited would've made that plot more satisfying.

    • @panda31415
      @panda31415 3 года назад +8

Faye Dawn My preference for the books is mostly because she has more time to grow and prove herself before the conclusion, and I feel like that makes a better story. The books are definitely dated to being written 14 years ago and do use a slur term repeatedly. I also read these when I was ~13 and didn't know all the inaccuracies for what was actually in 1888, but there are parts of her puzzling over fashion trends of previous decades that help explain why I like watching creators like Bernadette Banner and Karolina Zebrowska today.
For innacuracies, none of the suffragette plot is in the book, and she never goes to finishing school. Her actions are smaller and she never does anything as major as influencing politics, as she does in the movie.
If it's the dress history part that was bothering you - in the first book, I could imagine that they were eccentric and lived away from society so her only knowledge of corsets came from the sensationalized tight-lacing, rib removing magazine articles. She does wear one throughout the series to hide money and disguises. However, the 2nd and 4th books are focused on rescuing a girl who fit the sensationalized ’deformed because of growing up tightlaced in a corset’ stereotype, and there's a whole weird minor part of Florence Nightingale doubling down on this by telling Sherlock that Enola was running away from being in a high-society position that expected her to be tight-laced. If I were reading these for the first time today, I would probably be ok with the inaccuracies because it is a series targeted for middle school and not the me of today who has spent hours devouring historical CosTube content.

I agreed with everything but the feminism thing because I didn't think it went "over the line" with it, because of the sole fact it is part of the plot her mother literally disappeared because she wanted to be part of the movement and talking about a long term franchise it is a plot that they will probably follow, plus feminism feels throughout the whole movie not just in "certain" moments, im just hoping people don't underestimate/judge the movie because of those details because it would take its whole essence away.

I always think that if you make a cinematic adaptation from a book you should do it as a TV show, that way we get:
    A) More character development.
    B) Details and characters that maybe had to be cut off to get to the one and a half to two hour time limit.
    C) We get more clues to who the villain is (if it is a mistery book like Enola Holmes)
    D) If it is a historical book maybe more outfits (but that's more of a "me" Thing)

I think the "solving the case faster than Sherlock Holmes" is one of the strongest points of the film. At multiple points in the movie we are shown that Sherlock doesn't care about the case because it is too political (which he doesn't care about because of his masculine privilege). Enola not only gets involved in the case because of the political aspects (as well as her luckily meeting the missing Viscount in question) she also uses her understanding of contemporary English politics to narrow down the list of suspects. In my opinion it is one of the few clever #girlpower moments in a film that is otherwise overly heavy-handed.
I also think the criticism of Sherlock's sexism works especially well because it is a flaw that has been part of Sherlock Holmes since the original Sir Arthur Conan Doyle version. He has always been "a bit" sexist, so adding an equally smart female character that highlights that sexism feels on point.
I agree with the rest of your points though. It would be especially nice if there were more "small" mysteries Enola could have solved (the only other two I remember from the film are the flower riddle and the secret map code).

With a neckline like that during the day, she'd be getting tons and tons of stares. It's really a plot hole and they would've been better off starting the movie with her dressed in a heavily contrasting way then having her in disguise in a very accurate dress.

    • @Lena-fc9ce

@@texaspoontappa2088 i straight up thought they were going to do something with the fact that when enola dresses as a lady shes wearing no hat, gloves, or outerwear (coat, shawl, etc.). like maybe this was part of her being super unprepared for aspects of society and the next person she tried to trick would see right through it. *that* didnt happen. then i thought maybe this is just a general inaccuracy, but all the background characters are dressed properly.
and the corset bashing drove me nuts! it wasnt even internally consistent: enola complains about corset but has an entire fight scene while wearing one, so clearly she can move freely. it even saves her life by acting as a stab proof...corset (SPOILER: i also thought for sure that would be the twist in the climax, and maybe say something about societal gender roles, but nope, armor. tewkesbury totally would have been able to wear enolas corset, and what an awesome callback that wouldve been!). i liked the movie well enough but this focus on clothing in that period while being obviously inaccurate at the same time just took me completely out of it.

I loved it for the first half an hour, but after that it felt like it was dragging along. I was really impressed with Millie Bobby Brown (who I've never seen in anything before), but the writing of her character - and all of the others, to be honest - was so 2 dimensional that I found it very difficult to care about her. She had no flaws and no real character arc beyond outsmarting her brothers.
I really wanted to like this film, but in the end I had to force myself to finish it. With a tv show, perhaps they would have given her more depth; I liked what you said about how she would be really naive and we could have been shown her learning curve after moving to London.
This is a smaller gripe, but I was bothered by the historical inaccuracy of things like motor cars apparently being commercially available in 1884.
I also can't believe someone could make a film heavily featuring Sherlock Holmes and not only not mention Watson once, but more than once have people remark that he works alone and has no friends. This is meant to be 1884, 3 years after they met! Would it have killed them to throw in a line about Watson being busy?

First let me make it clear that I liked the film, and I would be rewatching it or any other film in the series. I loved the acting and the chemistry between the characters, and the scenery is absolutely beautiful.
Now I understand that when a book series is made into a movie things need to change. And there are many things I can forgive for this. Enola Holmes series though for young adults have a lot of scenes which I knew would not be shown as they are well too true a picture of Victorian London. But still the creators have changed a great deal of the source material to suit the film, they have also changed things that did not to be changed and it gives me a feeling that the creators were actively trying to get away from the source.
My biggest problem is with the way characters have been changed. Mycroft is the biggest victim of this, as the character in the film holds absolutely no resemblance to the one in the Sherlock canon or in the Enola Holmes canon.
Now the canon holds that Mycroft's ability in deduction is greater than Sherlock and the only reason he is not famous is because he does not like doing much activity, also the reason the he is canonically obese. Even in the Enola Holmes series, his enlarged waistcoat is always pointed out, also on this series yes he is misogynistic but so is Sherlock. When he wants Enola to go to boarding schools, it's because he actually believes that it is what would make her life happier for her. In the end he wants what is best for her. Now in the movie he has being turned into this bitter man who does not have the ability like his younger siblings so he is going to take pleasure in his sister's pain. That does not agree with me at all.
Eudoria can also be considered a whole new character who is noting like the one in the book and whose storyline is also one made up for the film.
Viscount Tewksbury is the only character I think they changed for the better and his change is one I do accept as it brings the 'necessary' romantic character that apparently all YA movies need, though as it was done well I really appreciate how they did it. But still he does only share the name with the book character and absolutely nothing else.
Both Sherlock and Enola seemed to have lost their spark in the transaction from the books to the series. Though I greatly enjoyed the way Henry Cavil and Mille Bobby Brown portrayed them and espiacially the sibling bond they showed.
Enola espiacially seemed lost her spark, in the books Nancy Springer made sure that while Enola was a wild child and espiacially resourceful, she did everything while following the Victorian etiquettes and rules of society.
Two lines which espiacially hurt as an Enola Holmes fan was her apparent inability to ride a bike, in the book bicycle riding is something Enola and her mother share and she is quite a proficient rider, and the biggest sin in my book was the line that Enola does not really care for flowers. During the whole series Eudoria and Enola used flowers and their meaning as the chief code while communicating with each other. It was also the only code which Sherlock was not able to break until Enola herself told him the answer in the last book.
Of course there are also many other small things that disagreed with me, but those can be let go as an artistic licence to the creators, these of course include the aging up of Enola and Tewksbury who were 14 and 12 respectvily in the books. Enola's birthdate was also changed which I believe is 1882 in the movie, while the whole book series took place in 1888 - 1889.
At last for my own peice of mind, I consider this Enola Holmes to be the younger sister RDJs Sherlock Holmes as the actions scenes and the various plotlines would not seem out place in that film series.
P.S. My two hated historical inaccuracies of the movie were of course Enola not wearing any hat and the widow MISS Beatrice May Posie. Let me assure you that the Enola Holmes of the books would not and does not ever makes these errors in her detective works.

the #girlboss aspects of period pieces/adaptations is never really enjoyed by audiences. especially feminist audiences, i feel. it always seems like a surface level understanding of feminism, or just there to hastily prove that a female character is independent or to manufacture conflict. it is almost always seen as lazy writing because these are modern ideals on a historical based character and it just doesn't really work

    • @valeskacanas9187
      @valeskacanas9187 3 года назад

Wow well said! I find when this is done it really sugar-coats how very difficult it was for women at the time. This "lazy writing" actually does the opposite of what their ham fisted attempts at feminism tries to do in intent, i feel it diminished the hardships women had to go through for their rights and the fact that it was a struggle...hence the mother and her suffragette movement and the lengths they were willing to take (hopefully that's explored more in depth in later movies).

The best thing about the movie to me is that it useas a clear way to give the audience hints about the case without being obvious (most of the time), and also that you can understand the storyline pretty easily as most mystery novels tend to do even if they make use of complicated wording or settings/cases.
Also, I really love the structure they gave them (I didn't read the Enola Holmes book series, but I did read some of the Sherlock Holmes entries), it's the typical Sherlock Holmes three act case, where they start with the primary case and begin to intertwine it with a secondary case that seems out of nowhere and that at first doesn't have much to do with the primary case, but that in the end (act three), when the secondary case is solved, the primary one is solved with it.
Oh and I love that the actors that play child characters didn't kiss in the end.
Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

i feel like had it been a series it probably would've been compared to a series of unfortunate events since they're so similar; so maybe netflix was trying to avoid that idk

I think it was weird that they ended it on that whole "I'm my own person" thing when... they wrote that character to attract fans of sherlock holmes and also have her solve basically the same riddles that sherlock does. I get that she's different, but she's still, you know, a take on sherlock. Which isn't a bad thing at all, but maybe then choose a different core theme, like becoming independent from your parents or overcoming prejudice against rich white boys or something

Totally agreed on lack of character development/context for supporting characters. I liked that this movie had plenty of charm and a fun style, but considering the way that "family" affects the plot for both Enola and Tewkesbury, I would have loved more clarity and emotional information for say the contrasting relationships of Enola/Mother and Sherlock/Mycroft/Mother, along with the villainous Grandmother whose arc is totally forgettable aside from a too-revealing monologue about political conservation. Considering this is a film about a detective, I was also sorely missing stuff like red herrings and dead ends, clues that weren't just anagrams, and some harder hitting reveals. I liked the angle that Enola's mother left her in part to teach her self-sufficiency, but that became muddied with the feminist anarchist girlboss plot line that seemed to affect Enola originally, but gradually loses gravitas for some reason. Long story short - TV version with more space, like you said, would have been really effective. This gave me A Series of Unfortunate Events vibes but with a rush for time that diffused a strong initial set up.

I need to know do non-British children get taught about the suffragette’s. Because otherwise I feel like some children will be very confused why the mum had bombs since the film never explicitly says they’re anarchist but they don’t kill anyone. Like I get Enola doesn’t know that but I feel like kids might think she’s a murderer.

    1. It definitely should have been a series. The books have more than enough material.
    2. I see a lot of people complaining about the 4th wall breaking but this is literally how she addresses/talks to the reader in the books. I for one loved that they implemented this.
