3.5mm jack now supports microphones on headsets? 👀 Be huge if this was also snuck in.
Any idea when this will be available in Australia?
What OS version is the OLED running out of the box? Did it ship with 3.5? Notice any audio crackle? Heard there is a deicated DSP chip but it's not on the spec sheet unless I missed it. Cool that you got a review unit.
I heard that the trackpad is more precise? Are you able to confirm that?
“Wake from Bluetooth controller” - Can you show an example of this with say a DS5 controller. Does it also work with dongled game pads like the Xbox 360 controller?
I happy to see Valve noticing your contribution to the Linux gaming and Steam Deck community.
THIS!!
I've been following GamingOnLinux since the Steam Machine reveal. He is practically their frontline soldier in promoting Linux gaming. A free Steam Deck is the least they can do for him.
I mean if there is a channel that deserves a review copy is this one. Glad to see it!
I really feel like the anti-glare coating ruins the clarity/richness of OLED.
I love that you got a unit dude! Nice. Congrats Liam. 🙂 You've done a lot for gaming on Linux, and I'm really happy that you've got a unit and are working with Valve more closely this time.
Very happy for you Liam!! ❤ Looking forward to your coverage! 😊
Definitely not getting the anti-glare for OLED
With how much you've covered the Deck and Linux gaming as a whole I'm glad Valve recognizes you as someone worthy of a review unit.
Still not a single reviewer talking about the updated thumb sticks. I've seen a few discuss the redesign of the individual PCBs internally, but not the fact _the thumb grips themselves are slightly bigger_
A few videos I’ve seen have mentioned it and quickly just say they feel “better” but that is very subjective.
I’ll be there day one to order the 1TB OLED model, like I was to reserve the original LCD model.
The Steam Deck has transformed the way I game, and the OLED model just seems to be an unmissable upgrade.
I just made a similar comment, i think im collecting every official steam deck piece of hardware at this point. I think it is solidifying itself in that "gaming history" books as the quintessential jump start to true mobile pc gaming. I want every one of them to show off some day haha, "son back in my day before mobile 8k quantum computers we had these whipper snappers *holds up steam decks*".
Congratulations 🎊
I’ll just wait for the second edition and enjoy my base model OG 🚀🎮
Exactly how I feel. I'll just start putting a bit of money away now and by the time the Deck2 is out I'll have the budget for it.
I've been on the fence about it since yesterday, but the first 5 seconds of your video sold me on it. That screen is AMAZING
IT IS REAL AND I WILL MAKE A BAD FINANCIAL DECISION ON NOVEMBER 17!!!!
Hah! Go for it!
It might be sold out a day later, hope not hon
@@CandysChannel you are so right but I am living in in Japan and they only sell it through Komodo distributor. they say it is available from Nov17
My biggest gripe with the normal steam deck is the fan noise and so I’m curious how the oled is in comparison since it’s supposed to be cooler and quieter
It is. Because the screen is thinner, the fan is thicker now, resulting not only in a lower pitched fan noise if it were to run at the same speeds but also in a lower fan speed overall. And because the heatpipes are thicker now too, it further reduces the fan speed needed for the same thermals. In the tests that are out so far, it seems like it's a bit quieter while also keeping temps around 5-10°C cooler under full load. So if you were fine with the temps of the original Deck, you might as well adjust the fan curve to have the fan spin even slower.
With that, I'd expect the OLED Deck at 15W to be as loud as the LCD Deck at 11-12W
@@TheTaxxorAlso worth noting that the APU refresh is now more efficient, so less heat generated as well as the upgraded cooling.
The original barely makes noise unless you are trying to play Cyberpunk at 60fps. Lock any game to 30fps and you get 60% more battery and its 60% quieter. The oled even more so
@@simonrockstream from my experience the origianl steam deck can get obnoxisly loud. anything above 10w tdp becomes to loud for me to be an enjoyble experience
@@Legokillen51 Remplace the backplate
as a lcd deck owner who modded and upgraded it to the max, this makes me excited for the next gen steam deck. More performance, OLED high refresh screen, better thermal design from the lessons learned on Deck 1. Exciting and happy that Valve is continuing to make some stellar hardware and advancing Linux gaming to new heights. Grats on getting a new model early!
i honestly might pick up an oled deck and give my old one to my family
I've seen that the anti glare screen washes out the OLED blacks.. is this true? If so the 512gb will be optimal
I’m also nervous about this since I want the SE deck, and sadly that only comes with the anti glare screen.
Apparently you can just apply a screen protector on it and it fixed it somewhat
I'm so happy by everything happening around the Steamdeck ! This has been such a great factual evidence Linux Gaming is a big thing! Testing battery impact on main big titles would be great ;)
Something i love about the OG steamdeck os how dark(low light)the screen can get while playing at night. How does the OLED handle this? Hate bright screens at night. Thx
I think oled is better for night since the dark colors are darker as opposed to lcd which brightens/lightens those dark colors.
You worked hard with the channel, so its great that you got the oled model😁
As mentioned on some of the other coverage... what's really impressive here is Valves commitment to the platform. They could have just sat back, continuing to sell the original Deck to new users (especially with the holiday season approaching), they were under no real pressure to update the device (sure, there's the Ally and the Legion Go... but they're more expensive, and feature a number of flaws as far as I'm concerned - looking at you Windows) but they iterated, and improved without risking the current owners experience.
I'm really interested to see how good the HDR is on this device I know the resolution will be weird watching a 4k movie but I'm really interested in how the HDR performs in that scenario
HDR will also work when connected to an external display, so there’s that…
BTW, the Preview channel for the Deck has received some UI changes. A lot of it has been darkened and tweaked to look more modern and work better with OLED displays.
Yeah I covered that on the website :)
I'm really hoping for a Valve Steam Deck trade in/upgrade program.
1st love your videos and 2nd it's funny how even a mid season refresh can bring all new things that the erm older things don't
Nice video you mention a few things like changing power led that no one else mentions.
my first ever purchase of steam deck, and i ordered the limited edition OLED. im really excited for it.
So excited for this.
a good thing to cover would be how to change over from old to new deck if you get one - I'm sure an awful lot of us just aren't Steam users so will have all manner of emulation and stuff on the SD card installed, cryotools, emu deck, decky plug ins and artwork changes - my only worry about swapping over is around the faff levels to get my new machine as perfect as the old, you're getting a new PC not a new console.
Dude so happy you got one! Mostly follow your channel since it’s pretty non biased non BS and concise videos when it comes to the deck. Hope to see more videos!
It would be interesting to see which peripherals from the LCD Steam Deck would still work with or fit the OLED model. I'm guessing most will. But if I have a spare screen protector or analog stick covers, would they still perfectly fit? Thanks Liam!
The screen is exactly the same size - only the bezels are thinner. So yes, screen protectors work on both.
The sticks are ever so slightly smaller on the OLED compared to the LCD model. So stick caps are usable but more prone to fall off.
@@Woupsme Liam's follow up video states that the thumbsticks on the OLED are bigger than they were on the LCD. So they still fall off, but for the opposite reason.
Welcome back! :)
Hey, thanks, good to be here!
Thanks for the vid! Did they change the thumbsticks to the magenetic ones? That was my big con before, as deadzones would get worn before
How much does the anti glare ruin the OLED? I really want the anti glare as i'll manual use it in my travels outside.
Yeah, this is a good question. I saw Dave2D saying the etched screen ruins some of the OLED quality, but he also seemed to saying using a screen protector over it "fixed" that.
Hi Liam. Thanks for the video. I've not owned a Steam Deck before and plan to order the OLED next week. You mentioned the dpad is also improved - can you elaborate on that? I've heard the Deck's dpad is not the best and had some issues with diagonals etc. Is that better now?
Seconding this, this is what I want to know most myself, with the current dpad it's really hard to go from right to left quickly without misinputing an up or down input, makes games like Super Metroid and Tetris hard to play accurately. Some comparisons and tests with the input test thing up from the Deck's settings would be awesome.
I had been considering a Steam Deck for the past couple months but I have a very good gaming PC and dont do a whole lot of traveling so i havent been sure wether I wanted one or not, or if it would be worth it. Im glad I have atleast waited until now if i do end up getting one I can get one of the new ones.
The thing I'm most interested in for a new model is variable refresh rate for the built-in display and a clamshell addon with a second display. If the clamshell dual display addon is official, all the better, but if it's something like a mod kit from a third party like DeckHD, that would be fine too. Just anything to add a second display of the same fidelity and ideally with variable refresh rate.
Hi Liam, I'd be very interested in your take on
- fan noise and temperatures compared to the older models
- HDR performance, which - if it truly "just works" - should be a big advantage over Windows
- performance gains due to memory bandwidth and other factors
- why the new display still does not support VRR (or if it does, if we can expect a future OS update to introduce it)
- MOST IMPORTANTLY, how to switch from the old Deck to the new Deck without doing everything from scratch (can I swap SSDs? If not, how do I backup as much as possible and copy it back to the new drive? etc.)
One of the problems I had with the previous model was the Wi-Fi would be terrible and drop out a lot when streaming games using moonlight I wonder how much this has improved with the new wifi chip so I can stream games from my pc with more control than the steam streaming feature
Benchmarks LCD vs OLED and emulation would be nice topics.
Hi, could you confirm if the issue related the Steam Deck microphones not working when the 3.5 mm is in use still persists?
In the previous model you could work around this using a TRRS or USB-C adapter.
Thanks for the video and for the hard work.
You said this> Valve is committed for long run on Steam deck aka Proton. That is so amazing. I have Steam deck and play on Linux. It is best gaming experience I ever had.
Can i move my current SSD from original Steam deck to OLED model or i have to start from the scratch?
You mentioned a Bluetooth controller can wake it from sleep. can a keyboard and mouse do it as well? Can a wired device do so as well?
How does your OLED seemingly anti-glare edition compare to the old antiglare edition and the regular glossy?
I would also like to hear more about this.
Valve is really killing it. I think this refresh is a nod to the community and those on the fence that Valve is all in on SD and they aren't going anywhere. Also, I think the SD is doing so well, it has generated a bunch of competition and are realizing this isn't going to be a niche market that they can be complacent about. I'm going to buy the refresh for sure.
Nice! Was waiting for your video :)
More to come! Will bundle up lots of questions and answer with my thoughts in the next video :)
looks amazing im gonna pick one up next year
Your channel would be great to review how HDR performs in Linux desktop environment. Is it possible to watch HDR video in firefox browser and similar challenges.
I just got the Steam Deck during the summer... now I gotta get this one =)
1 hour DRG stream with original Deck vs 1 hour DRG stream with oled Deck. We can even do it in the same stream, change midway! Then followup video with recap impressions, battery life, etc etc. Standing by for deployment, miner!
Is this the anti-glare 1TB version in the video? For OLED it may be worth getting the non-anti-glare version to help with black levels, but thats just a theory so wanted your input
Does this OLED screen have flicker below 50% brightness like the Switch OLED does?
Been playing exclusively on a 512GB Model for a year now, back when there was a waiting list. Only issue I've had is that the power button intermittently stops working, as if the switch was corroded or caught some dust maybe. One improvement I'd have asked for is a longer cable on the dock, so you can use it handheld while plugged into the dock. Also I don't think you can order power bricks individually. Then again, it being USB-C you are not limited to OEM/Valve and other options exist. So now I have to decide weather to replace my phone with a battery on it's last legs or the Deck which, one year on, is showing fewer signs of wear and tear or software based ageing than any other PC I ever owned.
Hey Liam! Thanks for being the first person I've seen to mention the wake via bluetooth feature!
Does it work with all xbox/playstation controllers that have bluetooth? I have a late model xbone controller and a series x controller, but I've been using my steam controller (and dongle) with the dock just so I could wake it without getting up.
Nice content Liam, I have a question, How comfortable is for playing on total darkness?
What Steam OS version did your SD OLED come installed with?
Great video! Very exciting to see a new model come out as I plan to buy one sometime early next year.
I am curious if emulation is improved at all for the more challenging games and systems. I don't foresee it being too much more but it does sound like there are some good improvements for other games
Super glad to see you got a keeper review unit! Can you confirm the old saturation plugin everyone used is not beneficial on this new display?
Second ask: I hear good things about their HDR implementation, can you test that? I've always heard it's not a good experience on Windows and yet somehow it "just works" on SteamOS
btw is the MicroSD reading speed the same or did they upgrade it at all ?
Could you do an image quality comparison to see how much better the LED screen is to the LCD screen.
Hi Liam! I loved your video. Is this the 1TB OLED SD? Do you put a screen protector on it? I want to know how in real life the OLED etched screen of the 1TB model looks, without any protector.
Thank you!
Hi it is the 1TB and no screen protector.
@@gamingonlinux thank you!
I really wonder how that bump to ram improves games that were just shy of playable like gothem knights and retunal now.
Well, F me.
If i knew an oled version was coming, i would have waited a bit longer. Bought my deck like 3 months ago, used it quite alot for the first month and then went back to my switch to finish the games i have there, so the deck is collecting dust.
I went for the cheap version on discount, my entire idea was to upgrade it with a SSD and make it an emulator system, but for now i have only placed a 256gb SD card in it. The emulation part has yet to come.
The good thing about the deck is that it forces me to play my backlog of games instead of my "main games" on my desktop. Since i usually focus the same games on desktop, steamdeck allows me to take a break and experience other stuff. I've played about 10 different games, played, as in, testing. Beat one of them from start to finish on the deck, made some progress on one of the games for quite a bit, 2 of the games were indie games with no story like vampire survivors. Then i also bought BG3 to benchmark the deck, played the game for like 5-6 hours and still have to pick it up again.
as a clammy hand bugger my skin grease would get deep into the gaps of the deck where the 2 parts of the shell meet, so much so that its the main reason I use a sillicone cover now so those gaps don't exist, very minor thing just curious if the gap looks any different basically
The Steam button looks to be the same mushy low profile hard to find in the dark button (that I've somehow gotten used to) but all the other new stuff seems great! I want to upgrade but I don't think I can justify it. I mostly play docked to a monitor with BT controller.
Am I the only one that wants to buy this 1.5 iteration even though my original is just fine to basically collect what will probably be one of the most legendary handhelds of all time? I feel like this is the technology that drop kicked the door wide open for a truly mobile PC gaming experience, and I think at least in my eyes it will be the handheld that will be remembered.
You deserved to be recognized by valve for your effort
What version of SteamOS is it running? Does it have pixel shift, panel refresh etc known from TVs/desktop monitors that use OLED and are there to prolong useful lifespan of the panel? Is Bluetooth LE audio supported (BLE Audio specifically not only LC3 codec that can be implemented over old non-le protocols) or is Valve planning to add support if it is not? Did gyro get polling bump just as touch screen did? Are back buttons any easier to press?
We noticed lately the Steam Deck was dropping out of the top sellers for the first time since launch. With the introduction of the OLED refresh I expect it to shoot back up into the top sellers for quite some time. This is great news as I was worried the Steam Deck was getting overshadowed a little bit by all these other Windows handhelds. I want to see developer support increase for the Steam Deck as we still have issues around Anti-cheat etc.. But things are looking great for the future. Makes me excited for a Steam Deck 2!
Don't forget, 90 freaking Hz! It's going to make such a massive difference at this form factor for indie 2D titles!
Wished there was a trade in program. I want that 1tb LE edition. Paying the difference, between models of course. Might just wait until the deck 2 instead of getting an OLED only for them to unveil a new model
I know you did a video on DBD some months ago, would it be possible to see you play a short while on the new OLED model as well? This is my main game, so I'm curious before I buy :)
Do check the touchscreen and how improved it is in desktop mode. The LCD Steam Deck has quite a few niggling issues in this regard.
Did they adjust the back buttons so it's easier to click when pressed "sideways" as well or is it still only meant to be pressed down as the original?
"HERE! It’s real! I have it!" wow the flex
Get well soon
Long Life To Lord Gabe
Apparently Controls runs with playable frames with raytracing on it now? I'd love to see some comparisons of established Deck "Verified" titles for thermal and perf
Is there a sensible way to port your games (esp. non Steam ones, i.e. Lutris etc.) from the old Deck to the OLED? Could you just put the m.2 from your old Deck in the OLED without problems?
Hey Liam, hope you are doing well
Thanks Liam! Great content as always!🎉👑
Heres a question. Can this new one run Steam in Windows 10/11 well enough for games that are "really" Windows only, like Command Modern Operations? Even headless, or docked would be awesome 😎😎
Thanks for leading the charge out here!!
I'm really looking forward to your coverage of the OLED. I would like to know how much more battery life do you get?
Audio (speakers) is upgraded too. Is this noticable?
Cool stuff. Original vs new model comparison with same games? If we're putting suggestions out.
Damn I really hope they would add a second USB C port, OLED and more battery power is awesome and what I wished for. However owning Xreal 2Pro Glases, I will stay on my old SteamDeck and probably wait for Deck 2
I would loove to hear more about the thumbstick caps and the possibility of replacing stock oem ones with OLED versions given some of the cons of the original like dead skin buildup. *thumbstick caps though, i believe the whole module changed so that a no-go
A pity that I can't upgrade the OG Deck with the OLED screen. The refresh is great, but i currently have neither the money to own two decks nor the nerves to sell the other one.
For a short while I thought the Elden Ring footage was on the LCD Steam Deck, but it's just because the game doesn't support the full resolution/ aspect ratio, which adds the borders in the top and bottom. GOTY material..
I can't believe I'd be excited about a refresh but here we are... I still think I'll wait for SD2, it feels a bit silly to buy another without ditching the current one.
So I am actually on the fence on whether to get a steam deck oled or rog ally? Few days ago, I thought I would go with ally but with the new improvements on deck, I am confused! Almost all of my PC library is on steam but the only thing pulls me away from deck is ability to play occasional gamepass games, epic store, Ubisoft.
So some thoughts on this, comparing deck and other windows handheld, preferably before Nov 16, would be great! Thank you!
You can use the likes of Lutris or Heroic Games Launcher to play Ubisoft and Epic titles, it is just less seamless than playing through Steam. With those games it comes down to Linux comparability in general instead.
Game Pass is more of an issue.
Anymore news for steam deck OS for desktop release would be nice to hear, for the OLED deck, did they upgrade the 3.5mm port to support both audio up and down to connect a headset with on this version? I can't see anything online but with how much they did I wouldn't be surprised if they did and just didn't mention it 🤷
How are the sticks and their dead zones compared to the original?
It'll be a godsend for people who emulate. PS3 and Switch emulation are getting better; they just need a tiny bump in performance to get a solid frame rate.
I assume most of us can’t afford to plonk down another $500-600 dollars 1-2 years after getting the first Steam Deck but for those just jumping in now, looks like a good unit.
Man this is just a perfect device 🤩
I can confirm it's pretty close to perfection now :)
At this point I never want to see cyberpunk ever again! Omg it’s all they test 😂
USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 would've made this an instant buy for me. Docking it with an eGPU would've made this a console killer and serviceable gaming desktop
Hey would love to see the fan noise at the same tdp/framerate cap as original lcd model. Including thermals! Cheers
Besides the better screen, I'm interested in battery life. Thorough testing of that would be nice.
I know the screen is large because it has a smaller bezel. But is it overall the same size? I'm curious if we can take an OLED screen and make it fit on the original deck. If the cut over is the same, just a smaller bezel it might be possible.
He answers in the video. It is not compatible with the original due to a new motherboard and other internal changes.
I'll be waiting at the Buy button at 7am where I am but in the back of my mind I'm thinking 650 bucks for a system I'm going to shelve in 2 years for when the Deck 2 comes out...is it worth it? Well, I guess I'll find out, lol
