I can't help but Wonder if the platonic conversion experience and the Christian conversion experience are both the same thing. When I first became a Christian I knew nothing of Plato or Socrates and I can remember being pulled in the direction of reformed theology because this Awakening experience was too much for me to explain, it was like I had been literally unplugged from The matrix. And it sounds to me that glaucon had the same experience forced by self-reflection and the understanding of what is of true value.

Anything that Socrates says, its really Plato doing it. Plato is writing in the aftermath of the execution of Socrates as well as the Peloponnesian War. Both of these events are the main formative events in Plato's philosophy and life. KNOW THYSELF, coming from the Peloponnesian War, because Athens thought they could win the conflict and ultimately got humbled. That loss began the decline of Athens-- its not a coincidence that Aristotle left for Macedon. I don't know if Plato was trying to revive Athens, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was attempting to garner support for an ethnic Greek state with a Spartan middle class and enforcers while having an Athenian ruler. You cannot take the Republic literally or one-dimensionally. NOTHING IN EXCESS, Socrates, who did 'corrupt the youth' by explaining to them why Athens lost the Peloponnesian War, was sentenced to death. This is an 'excess' of 'justice'. Socrates did not seek to subvert the ruling order, rather, he sought their moral refinement and development. The ruling elite either didn't care or didn't understand, and had him put to death because he did pose a legitimate threat to the authority of the state.

I have to back out. I'm not intellectually capable of following. I came here because of the 1990's lectures about Meister Eckhart, Western Civilization and biblical lectures such as Job, Matthew, Luke, Acts of the Apostles and Paul etc. I find I'm unable to develop that passion anymore. This in no way reflects upon Dr Sugrue's contemporary lectures. "It's me, not you" to quote George Castanza in Seinfeld.
Well maybe you're not capable yet, or you don't have the time to do the groundwork to follow. But philosophy is a personal journey. Even if you reach a point where you don't want to, you don't have to. It will always be there for when you want to or are ready to take up the mantle again.

I have to disagree, virtue and knowledge are not the same, the virtue in anything is in how we use it. Seneca had fifty marble tables for hosting parties.
How we use something (Techne) is knowledge. I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone appear to disagree but then reiterate the claim that they just disagreed with. You remind me of Gorgias

I have to back out. I'm not intellectually capable of following. I came here because of the 1990's lectures about Meister Eckhart, Western Civilization and biblical lectures such as Job, Matthew, Luke, Acts of the Apostles and Paul etc. I find I'm unable to develop that passion anymore. This in no way reflects upon Dr Sugrue's contemporary lectures. "It's me, not you" to quote George Castanza in Seinfeld.
Well maybe you're not capable yet, or you don't have the time to do the groundwork to follow. But philosophy is a personal journey. Even if you reach a point where you don't want to, you don't have to. It will always be there for when you want to or are ready to take up the mantle again.
