I'm from Canada, and most times, the hot wrench is where you start! Next step is just to cut out all the rotten steel and re-engineer a replacement.
A few years ago, I had the absolute pleasure of working on a 1974 AMC Hornet that was a 45,000 original mile, seldom driven car from the southern interior of BC. It came apart like it was assembly line fresh, and went back together even easier. I did not have to argue with a single bolt.

My 93 lumina euro 2 door was one of my favorite cars Iv had to date. Those older 3.1 motors were beasts. I loved romping that thing on back roads giving it all she had. Still ran and drove perfect when I sold it for $250 but had rust issues.

I had a 1990 Lumina for 9 years and it had 150K miles on it when I sold it. The fellow I sold it to drove it for several years. It had the 2.5 L Iron Duke (Pontiac) engine and while you would win no races with it, it was easy to maintain. Had problems with rear calipers freezing until used updated more corrosion resistant bolts. Use to load that car to the gills with wife, 2 kids and camping gear and went on several trips. By way this was also in the rust belt (Michigan).

25 years ago, my father in-law owned a service station in small town Iowa, where I spent nearly every vacation day for several years. We never made it through an oil change or brake job without a "Vinnie" stopping by to share the latest gossip or lame joke. At the time, being young and dumb, I resented the distractions. Now, I look for opportunities to let the next Vinnie, or Frank, or Lee tell me some stories. I miss those days...

I'm not sure I'd go with "GMs are well built" but I completely agree that compared with everything else on the road, they're much easier to work on. The bits that are reliable are *really* reliable. And even the bits that fail all the time also fail so reliably that you can just treat them like consumable parts and replace them before they break and you're good to go.

That’s what small town businesses are like. My father in law is a barber. He has guys like Vinny who stop by through the day.
My uncle had a bakery. The same thing happened. There were old guys stopping by. There was a local who was a bit slow. My uncle would sometimes send him out to one of the other stores to get things.

just changed both leaf springs in my 92 chevy. all six bolts came out of the leaves and even all 4 u bolts came loose with the snap on red line gun. but that's where the luck ended. 3 of the 4 bolts broke off in the yoke even after heating them cherry red so i did have to get a doorman yoke from rock auto. my surprise it was nice and fit good. my 300 dollars leaf springs replacement turned into 700 after replacing shackles u bolts main bolts and rear end cover, just to prove what I've said all along I got the truck from South Carolina in 15 and just three years up here hasn't been nice to some of it the body solid and new Jasper long block so it was worth a little love

while swapping in a 14 bolt to replace a 10 bolt in my '97 Chevy 1500 pickup, I snapped off a bolt in the yoke that I couldn't get out. $15 for a replacement yoke at the local pick-n-pull, and I was back in action. I paid $100 for the axle with leaf springs, $20 for wheel cylinders, and another $85 for a gov-lock. The truck is seriously over-braked now.

Wow I bought a 96 lumina from where I work for 180 bucks that’s what I bid on it. It had 301 k miles on it. I drove it back and fourth to work for a year then gave it to my mom who did the same for 2 more years. It had 330 k miles on it when she sold it for 1000 bucks. It was a great car for what it was.

NY rust, yesterday I helped my son change the rear wheel bearings on his 2008 forester. he bought the long bolts and bushings but we decided to drop the diff and pull axles doing it that way. Got it done and back together but your video on that job was the key to correct assembly of that inner seal. Thanks for the videos!

I had 3 Luminas, a 93, 95 and a 98. The 93 was the best of the 3, I put some snow tires on the front and that thing would go anywhere, the only time I got it stuck was when I got greedy and tried a snow drift that was as deep as the door mirrors. The 95 ended up with the same rusted control arms, I made new ones which worked good for a couple of weeks until the rear strut tower rusted through and the strut came up through the parcel shelf. Lucky for me a friend had the 98 that had a bad engine, his wife drove it with a blown head gasket until it wiped all the main bearings, he let me have it just to get it out of his yard, so I swapped the engine from the 95 into the 98

I put snow tires on the front of a FWD Dodge Omni 024 slid off a county road into a Michigan corn field in deep snow rocked out of the field and back on the road with no tow or damage.

Use hose pliers to pry those bolts out of control arms! My only other tip for dealing with multi-link arms is to shove a screwdriver through where the bolt would go and use that to get the holes aligned for the bolt. You also might need to jack the hub up to get stuff to line up.
