Spring 2019 to Winter 2020... Oh my! I'm planning to go to Japan through AFS from Spring 2021-Spring 2022. I'm 14 now so when I go I'll be 15, and I'll have my 16th birthday there! I haven't been accepted yet because when I started applying a few months ago I was more than a year early. I hope that I get accepted for going to Japan and the scholarship I applied to.
Sujaya B.K. You might want to start saving up money to really show to your parents that you are determined to go. But I understand that some parents are more on board with it then others. If you can’t do a highschool exchange, don’t worry. Universities have exchange programs that don’t require parental permission (if you are of age) Be patient!
Jean Roldan It depends a lot on the program, your home country and whether or not you can apply for a scholarship. Because I come from Finland, a relatively rich country, my fee was on the higher side (about 10k without a scholarship) I heard that some Americans paid over 16k. Which is totally not attainable for everyone. On the other hand a friend of mine only paid 2000€. Keep in mind that living expenses like transportation and going out are high in Japan.
I just turned 17 today and I am going to apply for AFS next year for the 2022-2023 program,, you should definitely give it a try! The max age for most of the organizations is 18 or 19 so don't give up just yet :)

@@dial1342 Hi! The cost of the flight, host family, uniform etc are all in all the cost of 120 000 kr, with rufly translates to 17 725 dollar or 11 590 euro. And STS has many options! I chose Japan but I saw they had other destinations! You can check out their website, although I don't know if its only swedish? Although I have to come with some bad news. STS had bankruptcy during the pandemic and just some days ago came back from the dead. I always thought I wanted to do an exange but after I meet my new class in "highschool" I decided that I think I'm gonna go after gymnasiet(which is swedish kinda "highschool") to Japan. I was an exchange student in USA 2014-15 and now I'm going to be an transfer student in South Korea for 2021-22. My advice would be dont stress too much atleast when youre applying to exchange in high school the process is super laidback!

crazy story, (you probably don't care but I kind of need advice and kind of just insight) i saw a tiktok about how someone was an exchange student in japan just about a month ago. tbh i kind of forgot being an exchange student was a thing and when i saw that post i was so excited about the idea of being an exchange student, but i never thought i could. after i started digging through tiktok and youtube for other people who went on exchange student programs (for highschoolers specifically) i wanted to sort of live through them, beccause the idea of studying abroad seemed so far away. But then after watching so many videos on it I really was determined to actually be an exchange student. I starting searching through the internet for student exchange programs that were 1. in japan 2. not too expensive 3. gave you host families 4. for highschoolers 5. allowed freedom (i saw some student exchange programs but realized they were for like a week only and they took you to predetermined spots, id love to go sightseeing but not for the entirety of the trip, also just general freedom to do things) 6. year round/ a whole academic year (i wanted to experience the culture throughout different holidays and stuff) I made a study abroad folder that's actually still in my google chrome bookmarks right now, after at LEAST 4 hours of lookning around I found 7 promising programs, but the application process and everything still seemed so far. The main reason for this is beacause one of the top things I was looking for in exchange programs was having it be a whole academic year, but I wasn't sure how that'd clash with MY school. My school is a colligiate high school meaning for 2 years you do highschool and for the next 2 you do college, you graduate with an associates degree and a highschool diploma while most other students only graduate with a diploma. I really wanted to get into this school at first and I'm so happy that I'm here, but I was so worried how the education systems would line up considering the education system in my school is already cut down to whats absolutely necessary. So im sat there wondering how to convince my mom to let me go, how to get funds for this, which abroad program to choose out of the 7 (and i was gonna continue searching for more programs), if i should go at all, and how ill do all this while STILL being in my dream highschool. So I did what anyone would do (as a christian, its okay if your not thought :) ) and I prayed. Well today an organization went to my school, and explained/offered a studying abroad program. They were talking about how its a lot cheaper than other programs, they offered everything I wanted and more, and I'd still be able to graduate from my same school with a degree. (this was earlier today btw) I was SHOCKED that this would appear right now, and it had Japan listed as an option for where to go (which was another problem I ran into looking for cheap(er) study abroad full academic year programs) and I walked away with a flyer. I also just recently picke up Japanese again, it feels like theres so many signs I should go and everything is already falling into place. I was just praying about whether or not I should even go, because not that it seems like something that could actually happen im starting to feel a bit nervous. I'd have to work hard to learn a completly new language, keep up with the education system over there, and most importantly- be away from my family for a year (whom I'm VERY close with and I honestly love them so much, I'm so lucky and grateful for my siblings). Then I opened my laptop, and see this video. "How to Become an Exchange Student + Tips". It was the first thing I saw when I opened my laptop, I didn't swap tabs or open youtube and this was the first thing that appeared, it was already there. And if that wasn't enough, when I start the video (because the video wasn't started yet when I opened it) one of the first things she says is that she was an abroad student in Japan. Im nervous about how to present the idea of studying abroad to my mom, but everythings already falling into place and I this is something I should do. Any tips on how to convince your parents to let you go- for a whole academic year no less?

I don’t know if I’m too late. I myself am not the best at writing essays or being interviewed. There were a few questions that kept on coming up, like “how well can you adapt to different cultures/environments” “how do you deal with homesickness”. It is important to show that you can be flexible and independent when needed. Be yourself! I hope it goes well

@@neonluvsu update haha i literally broke down crying 15 min before my interview LOL but i pulled myself together and it went really well:) they still ask the exact questions u find online. Prep, rehearse, and TRUST yourself. All they want is to have a conversation! Unfortunately, i cant rlly give tips on essays cause the organization i applied to (yfu) canceled their program last yr due to covid. So never got to find out if i would have been accepted. Id just recommend starting the application process asap!! Good luck! You got this:)
This is a awesome video I'm thinking of transferring in my first year in High School, I'm very Intrigued into the Japanese culture and Asian countries in general if I ever were to get the chance to exchange, it would be a amazing experience for me at least because I've always wanted to be in japan and learn about the country in person. ever since I was a kid I would be far off from American history or English history I would be looking at the Japanese culture and wanting to learn about that and Asian cultures and there day to day life I'm not Asian at all but have always felt that I just love Japanese history and Asian history in a whole. I’ve been taking Japanese classes so I know some basics and I’m still learning. I’m really worried about bullying in schools though. From what I’ve heard, the students are either really nice or they’re vicious. I’ve always had trouble with bullies in school. I’m also LGBTQ and I struggle with depression. I think I’m generally really friendly with people though and I really hate conflict. Do you think I’d have a chance of actually surviving there? Also thanks for the awesome video!

Bullying sadly exists anywhere in the world, so your concern is certainly valid. But I wouldn’t not go on exchange because of a fear of bullying. I never personally saw any bullying and students usually want to befriend exchange students as long as you seem approachable and nice. There are so many great things to experience and if there is any bullying I would immediately contact the local branch of the exchange organization. They should be there to help you. I don’t identify as a member of the LGBTQ+ community so I’m not trying to speak on behalf of anyone, these are just my observations. I personally felt like LGBTQ was present in media (don’t know if it was good representation though) but it wasn’t talked about. People can be uncomfortable talking about such issues in Japan. At the same time Japanese people are usually pretty respectful and Japan seems to be a safe country. Japan’s weird relationship with LGBTQ is a topic that could be discussed vastly (probably by someone more qualified than me). Take this as you will. I would recommend talking about your mental health in regards to exchange with a health professional whether that be a family care doctor, therapist or even school nurse, whatever you have access to. I would never recommend anything even exchange if it risks your health. Hope this helps!
Here in my school u have to be in 9th grade they give u a paper for ur parents to sign an agreement to be an exchange student for 1 year in either the UK or the United States I’m currently In 8th grade and I’m looking to go to the United States next year u can decide between both of these.

I want to learn Japanese and study the culture so far I’m 13 in 8th grade gonna enter high school in 2-3 months, I’ve been thinking about exchange for a while, this video helped a lot, the only problem is my parents, they probably wouldn’t let me, I might start saving up money for this, this video helped me make up my mind thank you. Convincing my parents is probably gonna be quite a hard task since we already moved to another country and I don't fully know the language yet, but I really hope I can go since I love the Japanese culture and language.
I am so mad at myself, for not pushing myself harder in middle school. :/ I’m 14 and going to be in high school next year and I REALLY want to go to Japan, but I don’t have the best grades and I think no one would expect me because my grades aren’t the best and i am not I know very little Japanese but I will practice very hard this summer. I probably won’t be able to enter because I am not wealthy, but it’s nice to give it a try. If this doesn’t work hopefully I can live in Japan in the future instead. This is just to give it a try and to experience the culture :)
It never hurts to try. Working hard and studying always pays off in some way. Good that you have the motivation, hopefully you can find your own way to live in Japan!

I'm an eighth grader that's about to go to highschool. and I really want to be an exchange student the place I whant to go to most is Japan because I've always been fascinated with its culture. The only problem is that alot of programs need you to take a class but my school has no Japanese classes, I'm going to try teaching myself but I dont know if any programs except that( also my family has many Spanish speakers and I want to know how to speak it so that would make it harder, I am already learning that though).
Language requirements probably differ for country to country. There should still be some programs for you though that don’t require any prior language studies. Some programs do heavily encourage to study the language beforehand to see who has the motivation to actually learn it. Most programs don’t usually require you to take Japanese at school since it isn’t a commonly taught language. If you do want to take classes you can try to see if there are any public or private institutions offering classes near you or even look for online ones. Self study can always be good option too!
I'm going with sts to japan (since my dad did at my age). But I also signed up for asf and rotary. I got excepted to all three organizations. But in the end it was between sts and afs. I went with sts since I got a more cheerful and happy vibe from them. The whole asf thing with the calling made me really nervous and stuff. There were a LOT of documents compared to sts. So I think if you live in Europe sts is a really good option.
Thank you so much💕 maybe I should make more videos. Most exchange programs are looking for 14-16 year olds so that you will be 16-17 when the program starts. Ask around, when would be the best taking into consideration you current/future school.
Brenna The cat lover I didn’t really have to because my dad had gone on exchange in his youth and was all for me going. Right now safety is surely a concern which is why most exchange programs are on hold until the situation gets better. Normally for example Japan is safer with smaller crime rates that most countries. Maybe try to emphasize that exchange programs have strict rules to protect students.
I've never gone to japan personally but some of my best friends live there and they said its quite a safe place! They also said that Japanese people don't rob/steal for money they actually steal for umbrellas believe it or not!!

I’m not super familiar with other education systems. But if you are in 9th grade?? and you are serious about going on exchange the following years, now is a good time to start looking at programs. AFS, YFU (there are a ton of other programs that just don’t operate in my country) had really informative websites. Maybe you could even ask your school counselor, mine gave me a lot advice. Hopefully you can go on exchange!

When you were in japan how did you adjust to the new learning environment? I really want to do exchange in Japan but I don't know a lot of Japanese and I'm worried if I would struggle because of that.
I basically didn’t know any Japanese when I arrived in Japan. No one is expecting you to know all the ins and outs of the language. Besides, you learn best when fully immersed in the language and culture. I personally think that you will learn and adapt to a new situation as long as you are determined to put effort into learning. And it seems like you have that!
@@menakbell I did great, thank you for asking! I passed the interview and I am currently in the last selection process with 2 other candidates, it is a full English test for all the sections, the test is 5 days from now.
I'm going to japan in august 2021 with afs and i applied just for japan and thankfully got it, because i didn't tell them other countries and just wanted japan, so my advice for other people is to communicate with the agency and tell them the reasons if you really wanna go to a specific country! communication is the key. they told me that it will be hard to find a place for me, because they are only sending 1 or 2 people, but when i gave them my reasons and told them that i am already learning japanese, they found the place!

Some tips for applying would that I would start ASAP if you have an organization you wanna go with then start right away. There were a lot of from the exchange organisation. Some that made sense like: no driving, drinking, smoking or drugs but then there were many too extreme regulations like you weren't allowed to spend too much time with other exchange students if any, just to name one. I could make a whole video on just rules...haha

From what i know, AFS provides scholarships and if you're from Asia you can look for Asia Kakehashi which is basically for Asian students wanting to go Japan and they provide scholarship. This is also the one I am going to apply for next year

Question for anyone whos been an exchange student in high school. How did yhis affect final exams. Did you have to reatke them? Or not take them at all. And how did you pass from one year of school to the other without taking the required classes? This is a a thing that worries me quite alot.

ik this is very late but i have a question. so i want to go to japan in my first year of high school and so japans school year starts in spring meanwhile Sweden starts early august so i wondered if you go to japan once you actually are in high school in your country and you have to catch up on everything or if you actually leave when school year in japan starts?
Is there a chance that they place you in a private school or an all girls school? Or do they place you in a normal public one? Cause I’ve been looking everywhere for answers, but I can’t find anything helpful and I really wanna go to a normal public one.
You can be placed in any type of highschool. I would say, from personal experience, that private schools are more likely to take exchange students because they want “an international image”. In many cases though, private schools and public schools aren’t that different.
I’m 12 and working to be an exchange student in Japan. I’ve wanted to go there since 1st grade, and I only remember one word lol (より night) but I’ll come back in a few years and say how it went and if I actually got to go
Don’t be too worried about mannerisms. What’s important is that you try. I can’t even remember how many times i messed up the greetings for leaving and arriving (ittekimasu/tadaima). A good host family should help you, not make fun of you.
I only started learning Japanese after I arrived, knowing Japanese beforehand wasn’t a requirement for me. Some exchange programs might have minimal language requirements.

Starrrinight Apart from the group exchanges some schools organize with their friend-school, there really aren’t any. There are a few reasons why (im guessing) Going on exchange requires some independence and having a friend there will hinder you from learning the new culture and language. Plus you will make a ton of friends from all around the world which is a part of the experience. I hope I didn’t bring you down. You can always go on vacations with your friends if you want to experience different countries. Hopefully you can find the best option for you!

I think the Japanese school year starts in April and if that’s true then I would still be in school for another month or so. If I wanted to be an exchange student how would I (if it is even possible) be able to complete the year and gain the credit, still getting to go the Japan the upcoming year?

That really depends on the school you go to. Some exchange students have to repeat a year while others just “skip” a grade. I even knew a few students who had just graduated high school. You may want to ask your teachers or student counselor about this.
I'm planning to do the thing i will probes do it in 2023 my parents surprisingly agreed and are helping me do everything kinda a shocker probs want me out of the house for some time - thats sad but oh well

If I can’t go for high school I will not think twice about going for college. How do I convince them to let me go to Japan for high school? Please just give me some advice on what to do.
You can’t really go to a Japanese high school without your whole family moving there so you would be talking about an exchange. I know that convincing your guardian(s) can be hard sometimes. I personally would start saving up money, maybe taking up a part-time job, to show your dedication. A would also mention that an exchange is a great option to get to know whether or not you like a country before having to move there. On another hand an exchange can also be pretty expensive so only going for college would save you money (and giving you time to save). If you are certain, you want to live in Japan long term and work in the Japanese job market, getting a Japanese college/university degree is a good way. But not the only way, since you can never really know where life takes you. Hope this helps!

It depends on the exchange program but most programs have you choose a few options. They take your choices into consideration but technically you can be sent to any of them. I don’t know, if you can cancel🤔
when doing an exchange program, i would need to host a student from my host country as well, at least that's what i've heard. i have divorced parents and don't exactly have the accommodations to host a student, how is this gonna work
Some exchange programs require this others don’t. For many they recommend volunteering to be a host family because it will raise your chances of being selected as a exchange student. But there are many exchange organizations that don’t require you to become a host family. I went with afs and my family has never been a host family.
How did you deal with the change in academic calendars (if there was any change) I want to exchange but my school ends in May and school year in Japan starts late March.
What if we were to only go for 1 year? and around the last year of highschool which is hs 3 when is the best time to enroll? Also can you enroll more that one person?
Exchanges are usually only 5-12 months. Different programs take applications at different times so I would recommend you start looking at least 1-2 years before. Everyone has to apply for them selves usually. Hope this helps!

Learning anything in a new language is hard and almost impossible in the beginning. You slowly start to understand more and more of what your teachers are saying. But most host schools understand that you won’t learn as much as other students. Rather, they are interested in the development of your Japanese. I learnt a lot of Japanese in 10 months but I am in no way near fluent in it.
I always want to and planning on exchanging when i will be senior for short term like four months (currently sophomore, soon be junior in few months left and 15 year old) but i want to take a whole year later in college also i wish you can add captions since im deaf :) so i can understand more and how do you find a good host family?

Having already experienced moving from a country to another can certainly be valued in interviews for example. I can’t really say if a certain type of exchange is more difficult to get into. You either get chosen or not. So I believe you should apply for what interests you the most! I started looking at exchange options when I started highschool so around 15. Most exchange organizations have their preferred age-range listed on their website. For most exchange organizations a host family is expected to provide you food. The rest is up to them. Sometimes the organization may pay for something like for me they paid for transportation to my school. I’ve heard that rotary also gives an allowance. But you are usually expected to pay for everything else you may need (going out costs, phone bill, clothing, studying materials if not provided by your school and so on)

Spring 2019 to Winter 2020... Oh my! I'm planning to go to Japan through AFS from Spring 2021-Spring 2022. I'm 14 now so when I go I'll be 15, and I'll have my 16th birthday there! Sujaya B.K. You might want to start saving up money to really show to your parents that you are determined to go. But I understand that some parents are more on board with it then others. If you can’t do a highschool exchange, don’t worry. Universities have exchange programs that don’t require parental permission (if you are of age) Be patient!
Jean Roldan It depends a lot on the program, your home country and whether or not you can apply for a scholarship. Because I come from Finland, a relatively rich country, my fee was on the higher side (about 10k without a scholarship) I heard that some Americans paid over 16k. Which is totally not attainable for everyone. On the other hand a friend of mine only paid 2000€. Keep in mind that living expenses like transportation and going out are high in Japan.

Not necessarily, if you were to apply now you might still be in the age range. But there are always university exchanges or becoming an aupair.

I just turned 17 today and I am going to apply for AFS next year for the 2022-2023 program,, you should definitely give it a try! The max age for most of the organizations is 18 or 19 so don't give up just yet :)

@@dial1342 Hi! The cost of the flight, host family, uniform etc are all in all the cost of 120 000 kr, with rufly translates to 17 725 dollar or 11 590 euro. And STS has many options! I chose Japan but I saw they had other destinations! You can check out their website, although I don't know if its only swedish?
Although I have to come with some bad news. STS had bankruptcy during the pandemic and just some days ago came back from the dead. I always thought I wanted to do an exange but after I meet my new class in "highschool" I decided that I think I'm gonna go after gymnasiet(which is swedish kinda "highschool") to Japan. Maybe a exange in university?

I was an exchange student in USA 2014-15 and now I'm going to be an transfer student in South Korea for 2021-22. My advice would be dont stress too much atleast when youre applying to exchange in high school the process is super laidback!

crazy story, (you probably don't care but I kind of need advice and kind of just insight) i saw a tiktok about how someone was an exchange student in japan just about a month ago. tbh i kind of forgot being an exchange student was a thing and when i saw that post i was so excited about the idea of being an exchange student, but i never thought i could. after i started digging through tiktok and youtube for other people who went on exchange student programs (for highschoolers specifically) i wanted to sort of live through them, beccause the idea of studying abroad seemed so far away. But then after watching so many videos on it I really was determined to actually be an exchange student. I starting searching through the internet for student exchange programs that were
1. in japan
2. not too expensive
3. gave you host families
4. for highschoolers
5. allowed freedom (i saw some student exchange programs but realized they were for like a week only and they took you to predetermined spots, id love to go sightseeing but not for the entirety of the trip, also just general freedom to do things)
6. year round/ a whole academic year (i wanted to experience the culture throughout different holidays and stuff)
I made a study abroad folder that's actually still in my google chrome bookmarks right now, after at LEAST 4 hours of lookning around I found 7 promising programs, but the application process and everything still seemed so far. The main reason for this is beacause one of the top things I was looking for in exchange programs was having it be a whole academic year, but I wasn't sure how that'd clash with MY school. My school is a colligiate high school meaning for 2 years you do highschool and for the next 2 you do college, you graduate with an associates degree and a highschool diploma while most other students only graduate with a diploma. I really wanted to get into this school at first and I'm so happy that I'm here, but I was so worried how the education systems would line up considering the education system in my school is already cut down to whats absolutely necessary.
So im sat there wondering how to convince my mom to let me go, how to get funds for this, which abroad program to choose out of the 7 (and i was gonna continue searching for more programs), if i should go at all, and how ill do all this while STILL being in my dream highschool. So I did what anyone would do (as a christian, its okay if your not thought :) ) and I prayed.
Well today an organization went to my school, and explained/offered a studying abroad program. They were talking about how its a lot cheaper than other programs, they offered everything I wanted and more, and I'd still be able to graduate from my same school with a degree. (this was earlier today btw) I was SHOCKED that this would appear right now, and it had Japan listed as an option for where to go (which was another problem I ran into looking for cheap(er) study abroad full academic year programs) and I walked away with a flyer. I also just recently picke up Japanese again, it feels like theres so many signs I should go and everything is already falling into place. I was just praying about whether or not I should even go, because not that it seems like something that could actually happen im starting to feel a bit nervous. I'd have to work hard to learn a completly new language, keep up with the education system over there, and most importantly- be away from my family for a year (whom I'm VERY close with and I honestly love them so much, I'm so lucky and grateful for my siblings). Then I opened my laptop, and see this video. "How to Become an Exchange Student + Tips". It was the first thing I saw when I opened my laptop, I didn't swap tabs or open youtube and this was the first thing that appeared, it was already there. And if that wasn't enough, when I start the video (because the video wasn't started yet when I opened it) one of the first things she says is that she was an abroad student in Japan.
Im nervous about how to present the idea of studying abroad to my mom, but everythings already falling into place and I this is something I should do. Any tips on how to convince your parents to let you go- for a whole academic year no less?

I don’t know if I’m too late. I myself am not the best at writing essays or being interviewed. There were a few questions that kept on coming up, like “how well can you adapt to different cultures/environments” “how do you deal with homesickness”. It is important to show that you can be flexible and independent when needed. Be yourself! I hope it goes well

Prep, rehearse, and TRUST yourself. All they want is to have a conversation! Unfortunately, i cant rlly give tips on essays cause the organization i applied to (yfu) canceled their program last yr due to covid. So never got to find out if i would have been accepted. This is a awesome video I'm thinking of transferring in my first year in High School, I'm very Intrigued into the Japanese culture and Asian countries in general if I ever were to get the chance to exchange, it would be a amazing experience for me at least because I've always wanted to be in japan and learn about the country in person. ever since I was a kid I would be far off from American history or English history I would be looking at the Japanese culture and wanting to learn about that and Asian cultures and there day to day life I'm not Asian at all but have always felt that I just love Japanese history and Asian history in a whole. I’ve been taking Japanese classes so I know some basics and I’m still learning. I’m really worried about bullying in schools though. From what I’ve heard, the students are either really nice or they’re vicious. I’ve always had trouble with bullies in school. I’m also LGBTQ and I struggle with depression. I think I’m generally really friendly with people though and I really hate conflict. Do you think I’d have a chance of actually surviving there? Also thanks for the awesome video!

Bullying sadly exists anywhere in the world, so your concern is certainly valid. But I wouldn’t not go on exchange because of a fear of bullying. I never personally saw any bullying and students usually want to befriend exchange students as long as you seem approachable and nice. There are so many great things to experience and if there is any bullying I would immediately contact the local branch of the exchange organization. They should be there to help you.
I don’t identify as a member of the LGBTQ+ community so I’m not trying to speak on behalf of anyone, these are just my observations. I personally felt like LGBTQ was present in media (don’t know if it was good representation though) but it wasn’t talked about. People can be uncomfortable talking about such issues in Japan. At the same time Japanese people are usually pretty respectful and Japan seems to be a safe country. Japan’s weird relationship with LGBTQ is a topic that could be discussed vastly (probably by someone more qualified than me). Take this as you will.
I would recommend talking about your mental health in regards to exchange with a health professional whether that be a family care doctor, therapist or even school nurse, whatever you have access to. I would never recommend anything even exchange if it risks your health.

Here in my school u have to be in 9th grade they give u a paper for ur parents to sign an agreement to be an exchange student for 1 year in either the UK or the United States I’m currently In 8th grade and I’m looking to go to the United States next year u can decide between both of these.

I want to learn Japanese and study the culture so far I’m 13 in 8th grade gonna enter high school in 2-3 months, I’ve been thinking about exchange for a while, this video helped a lot, the only problem is my parents, they probably wouldn’t let me, I might start saving up money for this, this video helped me make up my mind thank you. Thank you for the tutorial! I'm 14 and hope to go on exchange the next school year. Convincing my parents is probably gonna be quite a hard task since we already moved to another country and I don't fully know the language yet, but I really hope I can go since I love the Japanese culture and language.
I am so mad at myself, for not pushing myself harder in middle school. :/ I’m 14 and going to be in high school next year and I REALLY want to go to Japan, but I don’t have the best grades and I think no one would expect me because my grades aren’t the best and i am not I know very little Japanese but I will practice very hard this summer. I probably won’t be able to enter because I am not wealthy, but it’s nice to give it a try. If this doesn’t work hopefully I can live in Japan in the future instead. This is just to give it a try and to experience the culture :)
It never hurts to try. Working hard and studying always pays off in some way. Good that you have the motivation, hopefully you can find your own way to live in Japan!

I'm an eighth grader that's about to go to highschool. and I really want to be an exchange student the place I whant to go to most is Japan because I've always been fascinated with its culture. The only problem is that alot of programs need you to take a class but my school has no Japanese classes, I'm going to try teaching myself but I dont know if any programs except that( also my family has many Spanish speakers and I want to know how to speak it so that would make it harder, I am already learning that though).
Language requirements probably differ for country to country. There should still be some programs for you though that don’t require any prior language studies. Some programs do heavily encourage to study the language beforehand to see who has the motivation to actually learn it.
Most programs don’t usually require you to take Japanese at school since it isn’t a commonly taught language. If you do want to take classes you can try to see if there are any public or private institutions offering classes near you or even look for online ones. Self study can always be good option too!

I'm going with sts to japan (since my dad did at my age). But I also signed up for asf and rotary. I got excepted to all three organizations. But in the end it was between sts and afs. I went with sts since I got a more cheerful and happy vibe from them. The whole asf thing with the calling made me really nervous and stuff. There were a LOT of documents compared to sts. So I think if you live in Europe sts is a really good option.

Brenna The cat lover I didn’t really have to because my dad had gone on exchange in his youth and was all for me going. Right now safety is surely a concern which is why most exchange programs are on hold until the situation gets better. Normally for example Japan is safer with smaller crime rates that most countries. Maybe try to emphasize that exchange programs have strict rules to protect students.

I've never gone to japan personally but some of my best friends live there and they said its quite a safe place! They also said that Japanese people don't rob/steal for money they actually steal for umbrellas believe it or not!!

I’m not super familiar with other education systems. But if you are in 9th grade?? and you are serious about going on exchange the following years, now is a good time to start looking at programs. AFS, YFU (there are a ton of other programs that just don’t operate in my country) had really informative websites. Maybe you could even ask your school counselor, mine gave me a lot advice.

When you were in japan how did you adjust to the new learning environment? I really want to do exchange in Japan but I don't know a lot of Japanese and I'm worried if I would struggle because of that.
I basically didn’t know any Japanese when I arrived in Japan. No one is expecting you to know all the ins and outs of the language. Besides, you learn best when fully immersed in the language and culture.
I personally think that you will learn and adapt to a new situation as long as you are determined to put effort into learning. And it seems like you have that!

I'm going to japan in august 2021 with afs and i applied just for japan and thankfully got it, because i didn't tell them other countries and just wanted japan, so my advice for other people is to communicate with the agency and tell them the reasons if you really wanna go to a specific country! communication is the key. they told me that it will be hard to find a place for me, because they are only sending 1 or 2 people, but when i gave them my reasons and told them that i am already learning japanese, they found the place!

i’ve been working for a few months on my grades so i can quality too exchange and now the whole pandemic so i don’t even know if i’ll be able too anymore. i really want too go to japan.
what were some of the rules?
There were a lot of from the exchange organisation. Some that made sense like: no driving, drinking, smoking or drugs but then there were many too extreme regulations like you weren't allowed to spend too much time with other exchange students if any, just to name one. I could make a whole video on just rules...haha

I listed some exchange programs in the description, but I’m not sure if they’ll have scholarships available. There are many more exchange programs, your school might even know of some local ones (to your country)
From what i know, AFS provides scholarships and if you're from Asia you can look for Asia Kakehashi which is basically for Asian students wanting to go Japan and they provide scholarship. This is also the one I am going to apply for next year
I know YFU changed the age range. Im leaving in a few weeks and Im at the end of my junior year of highschool.

Question for anyone whos been an exchange student in high school.
How did yhis affect final exams. Did you have to reatke them? Or not take them at all. And how did you pass from one year of school to the other without taking the required classes? This is a a thing that worries me quite alot.
If I were to become an exchange student and the year ends would I be able to apply again for the same place in Japan? Sorry I’m not very familiar with how exchange programs work.

Is there a chance that they place you in a private school or an all girls school? Or do they place you in a normal public one? Cause I’ve been looking everywhere for answers, but I can’t find anything helpful and I really wanna go to a normal public one.
You can be placed in any type of highschool. I would say, from personal experience, that private schools are more likely to take exchange students because they want “an international image”. In many cases though, private schools and public schools aren’t that different.
I’m 12 and working to be an exchange student in Japan. I’ve wanted to go there since 1st grade, and I only remember one word lol (より night) but I’ll come back in a few years and say how it went and if I actually got to go

Don’t be too worried about mannerisms. What’s important is that you try. I can’t even remember how many times i messed up the greetings for leaving and arriving (ittekimasu/tadaima). A good host family should help you, not make fun of you.

I only started learning Japanese after I arrived, knowing Japanese beforehand wasn’t a requirement for me. Some exchange programs might have minimal language requirements.

Starrrinight Apart from the group exchanges some schools organize with their friend-school, there really aren’t any. There are a few reasons why (im guessing) Going on exchange requires some independence and having a friend there will hinder you from learning the new culture and language. Plus you will make a ton of friends from all around the world which is a part of the experience. I hope I didn’t bring you down. You can always go on vacations with your friends if you want to experience different countries. Hopefully you can find the best option for you!

Thank you so much, comments like these make my day! About learning Japanese, it really depends. The more you know the better but personally didn’t know anything besides hiragana. A little goes far! You learn the most while in Japan because you’ll emerged in the language

That really depends on the school you go to. Some exchange students have to repeat a year while others just “skip” a grade. I even knew a few students who had just graduated high school. You may want to ask your teachers or student counselor about this.
I'm planning to do the thing i will probes do it in 2023 my parents surprisingly agreed and are helping me do everything kinda a shocker probs want me out of the house for some time - thats sad but oh well

I wanna move there but my family won’t let me😞, I already told them I do not like the US because of all of the tragedy’s I have had here but they think I’m joking about moving there. If I can’t go for high school I will not think twice about going for college. How do I convince them to let me go to Japan for high school? Please just give me some advice on what to do.
You can’t really go to a Japanese high school without your whole family moving there so you would be talking about an exchange. I know that convincing your guardian(s) can be hard sometimes.
I personally would start saving up money, maybe taking up a part-time job, to show your dedication. A would also mention that an exchange is a great option to get to know whether or not you like a country before having to move there.
On another hand an exchange can also be pretty expensive so only going for college would save you money (and giving you time to save). If you are certain, you want to live in Japan long term and work in the Japanese job market, getting a Japanese college/university degree is a good way. But not the only way, since you can never really know where life takes you.

It might be different for every program, but from what I’ve gathered applications usually start about 1 year before departure.

You can always ask organizations just by calling. University exchange or becoming an aupair is also option if a high school exchange isn’t possible.

It depends on the exchange program but most programs have you choose a few options. They take your choices into consideration but technically you can be sent to any of them. I don’t know, if you can cancel🤔
when doing an exchange program, i would need to host a student from my host country as well, at least that's what i've heard. i have divorced parents and don't exactly have the accommodations to host a student, how is this gonna work
Some exchange programs require this others don’t. For many they recommend volunteering to be a host family because it will raise your chances of being selected as a exchange student.
But there are many exchange organizations that don’t require you to become a host family. I went with afs and my family has never been a host family.
How did you deal with the change in academic calendars (if there was any change) I want to exchange but my school ends in May and school year in Japan starts late March.
What if we were to only go for 1 year? and around the last year of highschool which is hs 3 when is the best time to enroll? Also can you enroll more that one person?
Exchanges are usually only 5-12 months. Different programs take applications at different times so I would recommend you start looking at least 1-2 years before.
Everyone has to apply for them selves usually.

Learning anything in a new language is hard and almost impossible in the beginning. You slowly start to understand more and more of what your teachers are saying. But most host schools understand that you won’t learn as much as other students. Rather, they are interested in the development of your Japanese.
I learnt a lot of Japanese in 10 months but I am in no way near fluent in it.

I always want to and planning on exchanging when i will be senior for short term like four months (currently sophomore, soon be junior in few months left and 15 year old) but i want to take a whole year later in college also i wish you can add captions since im deaf :) so i can understand more and how do you find a good host family?

I already have experience of moving to another country without knowing the language (Mexico to US), is that something that could help me when I apply? Also, are the programs where you know if you’re going to the place you want to go too difficult to enter? About what age you would recommend to start to apply? Do the host family provide you with everything you need? Ty :))
Having already experienced moving from a country to another can certainly be valued in interviews for example. I can’t really say if a certain type of exchange is more difficult to get into. You either get chosen or not. So I believe you should apply for what interests you the most!
I started looking at exchange options when I started highschool so around 15. Most exchange organizations have their preferred age-range listed on their website.
For most exchange organizations a host family is expected to provide you food. The rest is up to them. Sometimes the organization may pay for something like for me they paid for transportation to my school. I’ve heard that rotary also gives an allowance. But you are usually expected to pay for everything else you may need (going out costs, phone bill, clothing, studying materials if not provided by your school and so on)
