    Update! I was wrong! You can actually start it without a battery, but you do have to spray starting fluid into the carb, and the battery switch has to be on. The generator, once running/ fired, will power the front panel and valve that allows fuel flow and automatically operate the choke! With a charged battery, it fires right up without starting fluid, but the choke has to be manually closed. So yes, the gas flow valve needs power! I found out all this because this thing was evidently dropped off of a truck or something! The housing is broken where the starter bolts on, and the starter won't engage the flywheel! So, it has to be pull started! It fired right up, though! Looks like it only has 159 hours on it. The oil was pretty black, like it has never been changed. SMDH people treat a 1200$ or more piece of equipment like this. No oil leaks so not worth trying to take it all apart to fix the housing. It's almost impossible to weld cast aluminum anyway! I'd love to send a picture of it. My work is done on it! Now I just have to give him the bill! 😅

    I have one of these that are dual fuel. The gasoline side never started up, ever. The propane side starts up like a champ every time, so I've just used that when needed. But it would be nice for both sides to work, so I can fill it up while it's running and keep it going without interruption. Would you expect that it'd be a bad carburetor?

    Really good stuff for a homeowner with limited experience to understand. Just got a new one of these, the thing driving me nuts is it runs fine when manually pull starting, set choke manually...but when trying to auto start.... goes through the sequence of turning over for a while, trying a couple times and sometimes will start and sometimes not...even with battery charged by the 3rd of 4th try starts getting weak. No idea why it won't just start faster

    • @IndRepair
      @IndRepair  Год назад +4

      I have ran into the same thing and noticed they do not start fast or easy with the auto start on these! I would run ethanol free fuel to ensure it lasts you a long time and doesn't gum up but other than that it should start easier than they do. Must have something to do with the way the choke adjusts during this process. It seemed to me like it started the process with little to no choke and slowly closes on each attempt. Thanks for watching!

      @@evgeneiac It seems most everyone is having and issue with the choke plate not closing all the way. The choke moves on and off until it starts on these models and sometimes the vent tube or some other obstruction above the carburetor is the cause

    Hello Martin! I've been trying to troubleshoot the exact generator. I've followed your steps including having changed the spark plug for a new one. What worked for me to get it started is a shot of carb-cleaner and it fires right up. HOWEVER, it's the ONLY way to get the generator started. Meaning, it needs to be turned on and after having pressed START while it is attempting to turn over, to spray some cleaner in there - it will then start immediately. I'm not sure what's wrong - any advice?

      The BPR5ES is a slightly hotter plug. I see them used interchangeably many times with no issues and some would say it's all a marketing ploy. Well, I will let you know in a week or so. I will let you know what I find out. But, I think the battery switch is a single through 2 pole switch. I don't need a battery to start it. But, I do have to manually operate the choke without it. The switch grounds out the spray plug and powers the control panel. When the start/stop button is pushed, it operates the automatic choke and cranks the engine. If it doesn't start, it will do it twice more. Same when the remote is used. When manually starting it, with the pull start, you have to physically move the choke lever. At this point, I'm not sure how the propane side works yet. I'm an old man and have never seen dual fuel carbs before. So I'm not sure what keeps the propane from free flowing when it's not running. Like I said, before I dig in and start figuring out what's not working, I want to know how it is supposed to work.

    I have a 9500 Westinghouse unit, new, used only 8 hours, sat for a year, carb gummed up; cleaned out the carb and reassembled, but could not find the carb solenoid wire. Started ok, but when I plugged in the wrong wire into the solenoid, I shorted out the electrical panel of the generator. Now nothing works. Wondering where to start? Can you do a video on the back of the electrical panel? The reason I used the wrong wire, is that there was more than one free wire with a plug ready to go in the area. I used the wrong plug, and now I'm stuck.

    I have this generator and love it, but right out of the box the auto choke did not close when using the fob or start button on the unit. It's always midway between open and close when I go to start it up. I have to manually close the choke lever and it fires right up, then the choke lever will automatically move to the left on it's own and she purrs like a kitten. Can't seem to figure out why the auto choke only returns back to the midway point after shutting the generator down and why when trying to use the fob or electric start the choke is not closing on it's own. Does this is hot or cold temperatures and it has not worked from day one. Running on gasoline, haven't tried propane yet. Any advise you can give me? Westinghouse won't answer my inquiries. Is this auto choke somehow adjustable? Battery is always fully charged so not sure what the issue is.

    • @IndRepair
      @IndRepair  Год назад

      The solenoid has a pluger that springs out. When voltage is applied the plunger retracts. The solenoid de-energizes when the machine is turned off. Check your brushes, it's easy, just put my 3rd set in today. Is used daily, also check all reset breakers and there's a red one, so I read, mine has one but no mention of it in manual, on right side of panel behind outlets.

      @@IndRepair check your slip rings, mine were ok but needed polishing bad with some 3M very fine gray scotch Brite pad, can run the engine with AVR out of the way to do it with brushes out. If brushes are ok probably AVR is bad. Can check slip rings with a multimeter, I never found the spec tho, mine were 1.6 ohms to ground if memory serves few weeks back. Just before my electric start went out.

    I see your replacement plug was a resistor plug, a few of the manuals for different generators on the Westinghouse website caution about using a resistor plug "ALWAYS use the Westinghouse OEM or compatible
    non-resistor-type spark plug. Use of resistor-type spark
    plug can result in rough idling, misfire, or may prevent the engine from starting".

    • @IndRepair
      @IndRepair  8 месяцев назад

      Many things that these manuals will tell you are wrong. Normally they do not correctly label themselves as a bonded or unbonded generator as they should either. A resistor plug is good to use any time there are sensitive electronics around. They are required for solid state coils, and recommended in most other applications. These are basically Honda clone engines, we run resistor plugs on them without issue and believe that is what should be run in them for best results. Thanks for watching and for pointing this out!

      @IndRepair it seems to not have an issue with beginning the start process, and the light comes on evertime I push the battery switch button on the generator. Even with that evidence, could the battery still have an issue? I just assumed the battery was fine since light on, and it begins the start phase each time. Just never turns over to actually start the engine.
