I was intrigued by the George Eliot quote, "it is a narrow mind which cannot look at a subject from various points of view." Thanks for the review, I'd love to read the book.
It's profound and light at the same time - something very few classical novels manage to achieve. My favourite novel of all time. As a young general practitioner myself, Lydgates' struggles in a provincial medical system with its obscure hierarchies, scepticism to innovation and anachronistic practices offer an additional source entertainment and wisdom for me.
Thank you for this video. I have read most of her books but not Middlemarch, definitely next on the list. I visited her grave in Highgate and felt overwhelmed and emotional, you can really “see” her when reading her books.
My best ever. First read it as a 28 year old and now rereading 38 years later in a Classic Literature class . Hard to conceive the level of intellect needed to write such a towering book.
"But the effect of her being on those around her was incalculably diffusive: for the growing good of the world is partly dependent on unhistoric acts; and that things are not so ill with you and me as they might have been is half owing to the number who lived faithfully a hidden life, and rest in unvisited tombs." Such a powerful way to end a story!
I DNF'd Middlemarch the first 2 times I picked it up. I ended up fully reading it in 2015 and LOVED it. I am going to re read it in March of this year. I am very much looking forward to immersing myself in this world again :)
Nice personal review of this book. I am 67 and French by birth, but have read mostly English books all my adult life. When I finished Middlemarch last year, having never to that point read it nor any work by George Eliot (Mary Anne Evans), I realized this was one of the finest novels I will ever have had the pleasure of reading in my life. I am now enjoying Adam Bede, and intend on discovering all her books at some point. Reading her is like being close to Mary Evans, who possessed and trained such an intelligent, fascinating mind.
I’ve just finished reading Adam Bede and loved it so much I’m now hooked on George Eliot ~ I have the book Middlemarch ordered and it will be with me soon. I’m sure you’ll love Adam Bede also.
100 pages in, I have no patience to read any more, so I looked up some reviews. I bought it because it was said to be the VERY BEST novel …. I don’t see it. Can’t bear it and found none of your comments to be true for me.
Very honest thing heard in the comments. Why some books gets so much rave that's a mystery. But will somehow start to read and finish it due to social pressure.

Big Respect for your passion for These books and even more for your Intellect. This ist going to be the next book i'll read. Greetings from Germany.
Middlemarch is one of my favourite novels. In this review I find good descriptions about the main characters of this novel.
I'm reading it and I just don't want it to end. One of the best books I've ever read.
thats exactly how i felt!! so glad it's such a long book, i was so sad when i finished because of all the time i spent with those characters!
Absolutely. I read it for my English Degree. My favourite Book. I didn't want it to end either !

I put Middlemarch up there with Ana Karenina. Two of my all time favorites.
Anna Karenina ? I mean what even the ending mean ?
It's just trudging somehow till the end hopelessly.

I am reading the book "Middlemarch" by George Eliot in the English language and it's a good novel too
I read "Silas Marner" as a teen and loved it, but haven't been able to finish any other George Eliot novel. I'm not sure why.

Just finished listening to Middlemarch and loved it, great review!
I'm currently reading this now and I'm in page 5, young and fresh! Haha! Thanks for your insights! :)
Subscribed when I saw A Confederacy of Dunces on the shelf. Now THAT is the greatest novel ever written.😉

Nicely done. Thank you.
Can I ask u whenever there is question?
I can try to help if you'd like. I haven't read this book in two years, so I might not have a good answer for you.
I think Adam Bede is Eliot's best novel.
very nice
The name of the man she marries is Casaubon not Salmon!
i liked the way you explained

Free on the Gutenberg site. Many books are free.
I agree. I just can't see what all the rave is about.

I really feel for anyone who cannot enjoy this.
