Holy shit... Glad you're ok... I always have a fear of blowouts like that and I've been doing this for 15 years... Remember month 2 of hvac I was doing a "noise" call.... Little did I know it was delayed ignition on an old standing pilot furnace that had the heat exchangers collapse onto the burners... Well I learned the hard way on that one... I was taking the door off as the furnace turned on and BOOM... mfr blew up in my face.. After a few moments and realizing I was alright Customers says "yeah... That's the noise".... I learned that day...

Damn... That is true with experience and complacency. Happens even more often and with more serious results with firearms. "I've been shooting 25 years and I've never had a hangfire/ND/ double charge" but then it happens. When I saw the title I kept looking at that gas valve and thought about all the times I worked on a unit and didnt shut the gas off cause I wasnt working on the gas. Or didnt kill the power because I was working a burst pipe on a hydronic boiler. I'm sorry it happened but you putting this out will probably save several other guys from a freak accident like this so some good will come from your misfortune. I would have taken at least 3 days off and the kids I work with would have milked that for a month.

When I was a kid my parents divorced and my Dad showed me how to light the pilots on the furnace and water heater in case they went out, since I was living with my Mom. One day the water heater pilot went out, so I went down with my Mom and went to light the pilot. Despite being shown how to light the pilot, I was still a little leery of putting my hand in with the match, so I grabbed a pair of pliers and used those to hold the match. Turned the gas valve to pilot, held the button down and stuck the match in with the pliers. Same problem you had...bad gas valve feeding full pressure to the burner and BOOM. Thankfully, I had used those pliers, but I still got flash burns to my hand. My Mom called our neighbor, who was an HVAC tech and he came over to check it. He was convinced that I didn't know what I was doing, so he shut off the water heater and explained how to do it the right way. Before he went to light it, I pleaded with him to listen before he lit it, so he did and used a long stick to light the pilot and quickly found out I was right and that the gas valve was bad. Ever since then, I am overly cautious if I have to light any pilots... :)

Yeah, it happens. I hate lighting w/h pilots. Those piezo spark igniters can be finicky, but at least they have a flashback cover. This is a good shop talk on what can go wrong and why safety glasses, gloves and long sleeves (cotton only) may send you home with a story and not an injury. Glad it was superficial, but I’m sure it doesn’t feel like it.

I'm glad you are alright after that! At least you could get out of the way quickly as you were probably crouching to light the pilot since the water heater was off the ground a bit instead of laying on the floor like you would have been with a more typical water heater installation. I love your videos! I'm American but I watch you from Melbourne, Victoria, Australia where I now live. Plumbing and heating in Australia is quite different from American plumbing and heating and yes many places in Australia such as Melbourne are cold enough during winter to need heating but not as cold as the northern US. If you watch Oliver the Drain Addict's great You tube channel you will see plenty of Aussie plumbing.

Glad your ok . Your right , sometimes things just happen. We always try and be safe and work smart. Sometimes things just go wrong. In hindsight we are all able to say what went wrong and what should have been done. Reality is when your there working there are dozens of thoughts going through your head as to how to solve the issue you are there for. Relighting the tank is usually a simple process and you don’t expect problems. Faulty gas valve that allows full pressure through when only the pilot valve should be operating is a liability problem for the manufacture. Again I’m glad you are ok. I was going to suggest you trim your goatee anyway. ✌️👍🇨🇦

Sorry, had to laugh, got almost caught one with Propane. Small of gas, ok, arrived, boiler off as instructed (it was on when they phoned, but boss didn't have presence of mind to tell them to shut it off) by me.
Went out and gas was off at tank, turned it on and nothing, pressed the valve for the pilot and this thin column of flame shot past me and bounced off the wall.
I looked at it for a second, released the valve but it kept going! What caused it to ignite, no idea as I didn't spark it.
Replaced valve and pilot pipe, it has a tiny hole in it, funny it didn't cause any problem except smell of gas before, unless owner (who was not there to ask) had been playing around and made the hole bigger by moving the pilot pipe.
That jet of flame could have hit me right in the face, but for the fact with propane I always make sure I stand and my escape route is clear and I am on the side of escape.
Propane travels at very high speed compared to natural gas!
Anyway, you survived and the hair will grow back. Skin looks a bit unhappy, but it could have been a lot worse.
Propane stinks and can travel quicker then you can get out of the way.
Nasty stuff and needs a lot of respect.
Edit: Almost missed the important part. Glad you were not seriously hurt, but it was bad enough. Who can afford a day off and the pain that goes with the burns?
