Bro I always have a soft spot for that old cut-sleeve story of the emperor not wanting to disturb his lover's rest. It is just so sweet.
Beautiful adaptation of a historical story of a greatly misunderstood Emperor in a time when homosexuality was illegal, carried a death sentence in a lot of cultures and considered shamefully abnormal. Thank you for producing such an amazing interpretation. The costumes, sets, lighting, atmosphere and music is perfect. Kudos to everyone involved in creating this gem of cinematography.
To be fair the social / cultural attitude towards 男風 (male homosexuality) is pretty nuanced and complicated in ancient china.
Homosexuality among men is actually considered a cultural norm in quite a few dynasties throughout Chinese history. For example, out of all 20 emperors in the Wei and Jin dynasties, at least 10 emperors are documented to have male lovers (男寵) in their courts. And in the late Qing dynasty female prostitutes are banned but male prostitutes are not, and for a while brothels with male prostitutes and catamites are so prominent, the missionaries coming to china from the West are writing texts documenting / complaining about the prevalence of ‘sodomy’. So for the most part of ancient china’s history, homosexuality wasn’t exactly illegal, historically speaking.

Homosexuality was accepted as a 'hobby' in ancient China and emperors and princes legally and officially have a house of male consorts. Rich men who were tired of female courtesans had sex with good-looking male opera singers. This was also an accepted trend among Japanese samurais. Homosexuality became a sin and punishable by law when Christianity swept across the West and spread their religious culture to the entire world. Christians suffered persecution in Europe and fled to America. And when they had the right to practise their religion, they persecuted another minority group. Christians in North Korea and China suffered oppression and persecution but if they are granted the freedom and rights to practise their religion, they will surely oppress the LGBT community. Taiwan Christians are very defensive of their country sovereignty against China because they know if Taiwan falls into the CCP's rule, Christianity will be controlled and repressed. Ironically, they are against LGBT spreading hate against this minority group. Early Korean Christians suffered oppression and persecution and today some Korean churches are very aggressive towards Korean Buddhism, not to mention the LGBT.

i couldn't really comprehend the entire story, probably because I am not familiar wit the chinese culture or history but the film was really nice. It fills me with immense joy to see such a film from China. It was nice.

@@kazuto_zutto great, now you made sure he will get lots of bad information on the subject. I read several books on it as well as videos, articles etc. and they have a very very strong tendency to romanticize and downplay a highly abusive and in fact homophobic system.

First I just believed everything as well, but then more and more didn't add up and the lack of praised relationship between adult men was noticeable, just like the almost complete absence of data on lesbian relationships.
This is so well-made I even wanted more of it. From the cinematography to the arrangement of the content in the story to the costumes...impeccable!

A bit of background info on this video: The story of Emperor Ai and Dong Xian referenced and reinterpreted here is anything but positive, despite what I have seen many claim over the years now. In fact, the author who wrote it down didn't even mention whether the attraction/love was mutual and the story is in a chapter about people who gained favor of the emperors via illegitimate means and this could, like in this case, be due to looks. In the story Dong Xian is straight up character assassinated and blamed for the downfall of the Han Dynasty, even the mildest translations of the story leave no doubt that the author considered him a bad guy. And at the time he allegedly became the emperor's "favorite", he was 20 sui (19 years) of age, aka an adult by law at the time and the emperor was 24 sui. And despite all the claims about alleged imperial chinese tolerance about male homosexuality, relationships between adult men were a no-go, or between teenage boys for that matter, I have seen so many stories about them and they were always negative. Either they are straight up villains, not human (aka magical foxes) and/or at least one of them is dead at the end of the story.
Well I read there was a lot of jealousy and envy towards Dong Xian between aristocrats and officials who had spent years trying to rise up the ranks when serving Emperor Ai. Of course working your way up to power was common, so yes he took advantage of Emperor Ai’s adoration, but I don’t believe Dong Xian was really that bad. In such a time period, who wouldn’t enjoy the luxuries that comes with an emperor favoring you?
As for Ban Gu the historian who wrote it down, he was born after Emperor Ai’s and Dong Xian’s death, so he had to rely on earlier written historical records, archives and personal stories. Some of those stories were written by officials during that time. So in my theory It's possible that some of these stories were influenced by jealousy from officials close to Emperor Ai, possibly painting Dong Xian in a worse light. The claim that Dong Xian didn’t reciprocate Emperor Ai’s feelings could be questionable, he might have truly loved him?
Dong Xian did have a wife because they were both ordered to off themselves after the emperor’s death. But having a wife whilst in a homosexual relationship was common up in the higher ranks.
As far as I know during the Han dynasty was when homosexuality was generally accepted, especially within the elites. But even amongst the commoners, at that time Confucianism didn’t condemn same-sex relationships, the emphasis was more on continuing the family lineage through marriage and having children. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were “straight” married couples who had gay/lesbian lovers. (But lesbianism was even less documented so I’m not sure about that, as women’s value relied on them bearing children.) With men at least it was allowed as long as they carried out their duty of marriage and multiple children, preferably sons.
In conclusion: I’m not sure wether Dong Xian was such a bad person or didn’t love emperor Ai because many people close to them despised Dong Xian for the emperor’s blatant favouritism. The stories we have might be biased by jealousy from those who despised Dong Xian for his rapid rise to power. We can’t know for sure…
@@udontevenwannaknowbruv I quoted the story where it was written down in the oldest form. Lots of what you wrote here is your own wish, not what was passed down. In addition, the claim that either confucianism is not against homosexuality or that the Han empire was allegedly so tolerant of it is from what I know not well supported. The arguments that I know are really bad and all seem to harken back to Bret Hintsch and his book and to say this book was flawed would be an understatement. If the Han or any later dynasty would be as accepting of homosexuality as was claimed we would not find this pattern of stories that end badly for either both or one of the men involved. And I am specifically saying men, not males, because another problem with the pro-acceptance argument is that they not only disregard this fact but also tend to downplay the fact that they examples they do cite are highly feminized teenage boys that are made to look like women and are the most prevalent when women are heavily restricted, like at the Han court or later public Qing life. And they tend to even interpret incredibly homophobic story (like the one of the male mencious' mother etc.) as some sort of proof of tolerance and acceptance. Bret Hintsch already did that in his book and other followed. I don't want to write more because my comment is already so long, but to sum it up: The story of Emperor AI and Dong Xian fits perfectly the pattern of sexual/romantic relationships between two men (as both were adults) being something bad and leading to bad outcomes and only something that bad people do.
From the intro i got goosebumps.The narration was like so good.the name of this film itself holds a lot of power.
